General Flight Model Development Progress

- Today we would like to introduce our new AI aircraft Flight Model to you. This new FM, which we have named General Flight Model (GFM), will initially be rolled out across all fighter jets and then step by step to WWII AI aircraft. Note that our Helicopter AI FM is already flying with a similar GFM using Rigid Body Physics, contact model and complex rotor physics. This extensive development is still very much work in progress and we look forward to providing you more details in the new year.
We are using DCS: MiG-29S Fulcrum C as an effective test bed for developing the characteristics of crosswind take off and landing, strafing, re-joining formations, general aerobatics, turbulent conditions and air-to -air engagement. Take a look at an example of the new GFM in this: DCS World General Flight Model development video. The lead aircraft is being flown by our Chief aerodynamics and physics expert, Dima ‘Yoyo’ Moskalenko and the other 3 aircraft are AI controlled. Did you notice how No 4 pilot couldn’t handle the super tight loop at minute 4:35 and got out of formation, into turbulence but still managed to get stuck back in? Enjoy! - Ігри
While flashy new goodies are lovely, it is great to see additions that make the game more realistic at its core such as these AI flight models.
This is easily going to be the most substantial upgrade DCS will get in 2022... :)
Agreed, this will be a big addition to our Simulator. Thanks - Scott / bignewy
Good progress. Next will be a realistic FM for the non-AI ED jets, I hope.
@@destotelhorus Trolling?! 🤔
@@shagrat47 No. I am glad the AI is getting some love. But it's also quite clear (and acknowledged by ED) that the Non-AI planes need tuning.
Read the todays DCS Newsletter - this video is about the new AI aircraft flight model… Much more complex than the old one!
Correct, thank you www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/news/newsletters/a134f231fe8269e1c78dd6d0dd8c3c9d/
Thank you, because I loved what I looked at but I had no idea wat I was seeing. Some ED love right there, hidden in those lines.
My top 3 complaints about DCS were - unrealistic flight AI, VR performance, and the lack of a dynamic campaign. I'm glad to see that all three have been priorities at ED. This is a really big deal.
For me a dynamic campaign and absolute ownership
It does take a lot of time sadly, but we are working hard, and you know for a fact if we release something that is not ready we would be slammed by the community and rightly so. Thanks - Scott / bignewy
@@mumblerinc.6660 It's nice ... but I can't understand the relationship with the intelligence of the AI (?) Unless I'm mistaken, it only speaks of "competence" in the patrolling of place which just won't go as far as losing control (I didn't realize this was a problem until then).
@@EagleDynamicsTV rightfully so slammed to the ground. You guys don’t really have competition(other than a certain mod for a certain 1990s game) so the only real market force to keep y’all on ye toes is the community.
@@AliBaba-vw7mo DCS may not have direct competition, but there's plenty of other stuff to do in life if they fail to keep things fresh. When the Viper came out and wasn't ready, I switched to Cities Skylines for a while to let DCS ripen a little.
Speaking of the competition, if you want to appreciate ED as a developer, try playing Train Sim or World of Warships sometime. We have it pretty good here. Imagine if the best module was still SFM non-clickable, and the only way to get it was through $120 (on average) of lootboxes.
I was pretty impressed, than I realized the lead aircraft was flown by a human, now I'm very impressed. 👍
Yes, lead is the human, and thank you for your kind words. - Scott / bignewy
Oh wow very nice! Thought all 4 where AI
@@ryantrahan2240 same its really good news i hope we can do diamond formation with bots after the update comes
I guess this is gonna boost cinematics to a whole another level
You said it bro
Yup! AI air shows! Gotta Love it! Great work ED !
Unfortunately we won't get to see a lot of them since UA-cam's algorithm suppresses most DCS World videos and channels.
@@ironroad18 really??? How so?
It's not so much the graceful flight paths but, rather, #4 screwing up and FIXING it! That's awesome!
The little oscillations of the wingmen on start/stop of movements is really nice. Hard to see if there's any left - right roll steering corrections from this view. Looking forward to seeing the GFM when it eventually releases.
This is a important step in the right direction! (And the reason why I buy models even if I don't fly them: I want to support you, so you can keep developing the game)
Yes, that is why I also buy modules I rarely or never fly. Not at all because I don’t have the time and skill to learn them all but am still attracted by the idea of flying them! :D
Haha - i'm the prowd owner of the A-10 C II Tank Killer, F-16C, F/A-18C and all i tried so far is the SU-25 T Frogfoot you get for free - but i don't care - take my money and make something awesome from it! :D
Yup! I'm now the proud owner of all the modules for the exact same reasons! Cheers!
@@MAXsenna00 Ditto
@Julian Morrisco Ahhhh I see I am in the presence of a cultured gentlemen collector of digital aviation modules like myself that also invested hundreds into DCS and DEFINITELY mastered all his modules and their complicated systems.
What??? How dare you claim that all my jets are covered in dust and haven't seen combat since 2019......If you were an expert pilot like myself You would know that "dust" you claim is actually combat debree from all the combat I am always in every day.
Now excuse me, I need to go buy another helicopter that I will DEFINITELY fly into combat and not spend 20 minutes in the cockpit Youtubing startup procedures only to get frustrated and rush things which eventually leads to me flipping it on its side 12 seconds after takeoff.
Look at all the small movements... Looks so natural! I love it! Awesome job, ED!
YES. Thank you ED for creating our dream flight sim.
This is amazing! Definitely great to see improvements like this. ❤️
No "Wags here from Eagle Dynamics "? Bummer.
You can read the description in his voice
Daddy Waggy
Nice flying Dmitry, and congrats on the very realistic AI wingmen.
I never get tired of looking at the Fulcrum!
It is nice to see update videos. Thx.
This is what I’ve been waiting for! My aerobatics team needed a few fill in slots that some of the humans ain’t ready for yet.
at 4:30, teh rear jet fell completely out of formation and worked back in. that was really cool
I just shed tears of joy!
You should have seen me checking for audio problems the moment I started watching... Great stuff! Soooo that's it for December?
Its a great reminder of how challenging it is to recreate an accurate physics model for complex aircraft to interact with human players. 2 years in the making, this is dedication, and of course we'll benefit a lot for the added realism and immersion.
Thank You for this update. o7 to the team!
its videos like these that introduced and got me interested in dcs
thank you ed
Its very nice to see the core of DCS improve like the new caucasus, weather and air AI. I hope this continue with ground AI because it's archaic since a long time and needs massive improvements.
This is so cool! Can't wait! Thank you so much!
okay this is going to be amazing for cinematics
Very happy to see AI improvements. The mission editor getting love with the sun and moon. Weather previews, general optimization and etc. DCS has changed so much since I got it 2 years ago.
No idea what this is but hats off to these computer developers for making a cool game
It's clearly explained in the description...
So reading the description is a hard task these days?
@@Tepnox Yeah, I notice this more and more
you can read more in the newsletter here www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/news/newsletters/a134f231fe8269e1c78dd6d0dd8c3c9d/
@@realQuiGon Errr no its not
Just loving the great work you guys are doing,... Well done for this great perfomrnace and thank you all....
Will this be accurate enough to allow players to be a wingman to an AI flight lead, for example in DLC campaigns?
Something that gets annoying after a while, is that the player is always flight lead and/or section lead. I'd like to be for example a Lieutenant JG for once in a SP campaign ;-)
This! I don't understand why this is not a thing...would looove to be just a part of the flight...just following orders and doing my thing...not every day I want to manage the entire flight!
Yeah, I can finally see a real closed formation with the AI... looking forward to this implementation :)
I'm curious as to what difference you can see side-by-side compared to old SFM running this same mission! Super excited for this development
Yeah, that'd be a cool video! 😉
Now imagine if this was a flight of four A-10II's doing gun runs. GLORIOUS!
Very cool update!
Superb improvements as usual, just what I expected from the best combat flight sim there is, thanks to all at ED for all your hard work it makes it easier for me to spend some more of my hard earned on the thing I love doing best
Will mod developers be able to use GFM on the planes they are developing?
*I CANNOT WAIT ANY LONGER!*
I spotted a hungarian MiG-29 on the thumbnail, nice livery :)
Might have been a good idea to have had an explanation of what the lines represent or what is happening in the video !
Nice! New video
Can you provide any details about what is the underlying difference from the simplified flight model? Does it use a different buildup of aero coefficients with more independent variables? More higher order terms in the equations of motion?
Pretty sure the SFM that they were using is just a lookup table of values. The model they use for player jets is a set of calculations and from the sounds of things this might be a mix of both but u could be wrong
@@commiccannon592 Any aerodynamic model will necessarily consist of some combination of lookup tables and a set of calculations based on those values. The details of what is modeled in those elements are what separates a high fidelity model from a simplified model.
When i first started playing video games over 40 something years ago.I could never have imagined then, that we Would go from a bouncing 2D ball and paddles, to something like this. Love it.
I'm not sure of what I am watching, but if it's developments and improvements to my favourite sim, then good work ED 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
That is very impressive ! Is that also going to have any influence in the A.I tactics? they are not that smart when evading missiles or bombing stuff.
Looks great 😁 but all I ever wanted from dcs for Christmas is dynamic campagin..
Crazy awesome 👍
Very impressive work. Looks like you could have developp the real Air Force AI! You make me dream of a high fidelity Fulcrum mod (full cliquable cockpit, improved cockpit textures...) and I think I'm not the only one ;-) Great job anyway and good luck for the continuation.
Cool, I'm looking forward to seeing this in the future, the AI's behaviour can sometimes break the laws of physics and become UFO like.
This is absolutely outstanding ED... does this mean I can practice formation flying with the ai in my own?... hope so.
In this video is it only No. 4 being effected by the GFM and no 2 + 3 do not have it applied yet. Is this is for comparison?
I wonder if there will be more approach options such as overhead breaks, high keys and touch and goes. When I say this I mean specifically for the AI traffic.
Does this mean that the ai flight model will lose energy just like us? For example when going into vertical loops?
Does this include new AI Formation behavior (actually being able to fly fingertip instead of always being a mile away)?
Sweet
"will initially be rolled out across all fighter jets".
That also means Flaming Cliffs modules then?
So.. which one represents what?
Is it about tailwind vortex some kinda?
Finally, this will be great for the airshow community… Any idea if you can expand the wingman’s to 6 like how the Thunderbirds and blue angels fly with 6 jets ?
DCS really seems to be improving in leaps and bounds. Currently the best looking Sim (IMO, and I don’t include sims that don’t have to deal with ballistics, damage models etc but even including stuff like MSFS DCS can hold it’s head high). I’m a single person flyer as I need to be able to pause my flights due to boring IRL stuff so can’t participate in sessions that might last longer than 15-20 minutes at a sitting without being able to pause, although I’d love to get into multi player I just can’t at present. Anyway, the improvements to the MM, campaigns both free and paid and the various mods really keep me excited about the sim. I wish the UI had been a little more user friendly (the non flying bit) when I started but now that I’ve spent the hours learning the interface it doesn’t affect me anymore. Still, I’m here to praise, not bury ED. Great job so far and I really look forward to the stuff coming up soon.
It's _really_ good to serious work on AI. Well done ED. Please notify us as each aircraft makes its transition. Looking out for the WW2 birds. TW The 4:35 recovery looked great.
Are you using artificial potential fields to control formation keeping?
When can we see this rolled out to open beta?
It's crazy how much time this takes 2,5 years of development just for the this new Flight model - great work ED and big thank you for never stoping to improving DCS ...
If DCS was the flight sim version of Minecraft (it's not of course) these kind of things would make it special, and carry over from graphical generation to generation. Thank you for taking the steps to allow me to use my AI wingmen as something more than 'bait'.
Very nice!!!!
NICE OH YEAH
THESE are things I want to see added. The sim at its CORE.
for some reason I am not getting any audio at all from this video. any other videos on youtube I hear fine
Wow good mathematic
Nice😁🤘
I do hope wingmen will finally have better sense of self-preservation now with this new model. Right now, they prioritize getting into formation above everything else so much that they often literally drop out of the sky from stalling or crash into other planes while trying to get to their flight lead.
Any news on updating the Track Replay? I can't get a single track to replay properly, planes keep going off course or just ditch halfway through the flight. Its stopping me from making cinematics, very frustrating
Yesss
So will this aliviate the ai su27 and j11 spiking ur air craft from the opposite side of the planet while ur still on the taxiway in multiplayer maps? Cuz I have been hearing rwr noises in my sleep from all the 29 spikes in ai Rich environments
Are they smart enough to know when to switch from finger to echelon turns? lol Amazing work, guys, simply amazing!
Now if only the AI wing man would attack the bandits and or not drop his ord at the first sign of trouble and actually help.
Will the new GFM AI be able to execute and corradiated basic and advanced ACM maneuvers? Furthermore, how far do their tactical planning go? Will the behave differently given unique circumstances? Will it run if it looses the advantage in a dogfight? Will it call for reinforcements from allied flights in range?
Hopefully, you guys improved the climb performance of the Mig-29 as well.... I've noticed the DCS F-18 can literally match the Mig-29's climb rate.
That's great! But when can we expect Over Wing Contrails for Flankers and such? You know, all the other FC3 aircraft
Will this lead to more realistic flight behaviour? So no more infinite energy for ww2 AI aircraft?
Outstanding! Great Job ED. I want i want i want 😛

Impressive!
Anyone else think the Mig 29 is one of the best looking aircraft.
Same, and also AV8b
YESSIR
No sound? Or is it just me?
Same
Flight Models don't have sound
@@realQuiGon that I know but I didn't know if Wags was meant to be doing some narration or something about what it's showing. Having read the weekly update I now understand the context and what is being shown but normally even if there is no 'ingame' sound Ed tends to have music playing or something.
There is no sound.
Yes, no sound in the video clip sadly, we will all have to make plane noises while watching :) Thanks - Scott / bignewy
This is going to speed up Wingman operations? By how much? I only play Single Player, but wingman work is difficult to use properly
I hear no sound in this video?
Game Changer
Can you guys work on making the game more optimized, maybe add DLSS?
is gfm done with machine learning?
no sound?
This video doesn't have sound.
Respect! I know it is very very hard to do AI, so hats off!
i think i have not that in depth knowledge for this. what is the point of this new flightmodel and why is it better than the old one?
Current AI planes have a flight model that both sometimes violates laws of physics in noticeable ways, and also in general non-combat flight the AI can make bizarre piloting choices or act in unnatural ways. This new model works on fixing these problems without using up so many CPU resources that the game slows down a lot. It's a needed building block on the way to making AI planes perform more realistically in combat as well.
Still waiting on ATC Update!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Those condensation effects are exaggerated. I wish there is a mean to reduce them.
Im surprised it took this long to do, but better late than never. Cold war missions really sucked when AI aircraft were basically UFOs in dogfights, particularly the MiG-21
Yes very much. I remember trying to shred an AI MiG 21 in the Hornet and basically getting lucky in killing it.
