Hey Matt, thanks for the great review, if I'm mainly winging and I have the MA 1000 and 1225 is there good reason to have a new HA? I'm around 70 kilos, intermediate level.
The MA are awesome for winging and I still ride them a bunch. The MA has better breach recovery and is quicker rail to rail than the HA. The HA will have more glide and speed as well as better upwind ability, lower stall speed, and easier take off. I am personally winging the HA1180 for light air as it is a total weapon, the HA980 for max glide on small bumps and the HA780 for all around conditions. I find that the 780 takes off easier than the MA1000, has more glide, better angles and is faster than the 1000. That being said I love the 1000 for bumpy funky conditions or for riding in conditions that are more extreme. I would say if you are going to add to your range of MA, I would start with the HA780 for all around conditions as it is insanely fun and easy to ride and the HA1080 or 1180 for lighter winds and more glide on some little bumps.
Matt great review! I think you have ridden the Axis Spitfires. How would you compare say the 1100 SF to the 1180 HA in terms of glide, low end stall speed, turning, ease of pumping and getting up on foil in light wind conditions (WF). Thanks.
Thanks for the message. The SF 1100 Axis will feel bigger, slower and more locked in stable than the HA1180. I think that for light wind winging the HA1180 is more efficient, better take off and works better for winging than the SF1100. I would put the SF1100 in the more entry level category and will feel more drag with slower turns. The HA1180 is the advanced beginner to higher realm with a smoother ride and better turning.
Thanks for the review mate. I think you are much more talented than you think and could probably size down to the ha980 in these conditions and use that also for lightwind winging. I found for winging and pumping there’s no need to go bigger than ma1225, the 980 should be even easier and thats my choice anyway at 82kg and less experience than you. Demoed the 880 winging last week and was blown away by the pumping.👍Waiting for that new wingboard on water review.
Yeah for sure. I ride the HA980 a lot. The 980 size feels similar to the MA1225 for sure. The 980 is probably my most used of the HA range. I have been proning and winging the HA880 a bunch and love that size too. HA780 for winging is next level too. This session was REALLY small so I went 1080. I have been surprised at how well the bigger HA surf and wing. They don't lift you out of the water on take off and do still turn well. This entire range of new HA continues surprise us and the consumer feedback is next level. PS. The on water for the wing boards is coming.
Nice ride! I’m 215lbs. Live in the gorge and looking to wing upwind and ride the swell back down. Will the 1180 be big enough? How about the dwp930? Would the 930 be big enough? Thanks
Good questions. Yes the HA1180 will be big enough to upwind and down wind on. It has a very easy take off and plenty of glide for those conditions at your size. The DW930 will work for that but it is more technical. I could see you starting the season on the 1180 and ending on the DW930. The 930 will be much faster but harder to get on foil and more technical to turn. The new HA are all sweet spot with a lot of slide so I think that the 1180 will be the ticket for you all around.
The new HA has much lower stall speed across the entire range. I would say that the new HA 980 has lower stall speed than the previous HA1525. The new HA is a very different foil made for different purposes so kind of hard to compare. The new HA was designed for surf foiling. Pump and glide and connecting waves in a userfriendly package. The old HA was designed for max top speed and performance and was really targeted at winging. Both foils work for surfing and winging but had different design plans from the beginning. Hope that helps.
@@BateleurWyes the stall speed and bottom end is drastically improved on the new HA. Because of those features you can ride one to two foil sizes smaller. Smaller the foil the faster it goes and better it turns. The new HA880 is comparable to the HA925 in speed. Maybe slightly slower. That being said you can get up on foil easier on the HA780 than the HA925 and the HA780 is faster and turns better than the 925. I have found that the comfort and control of the new HA allows you to push harder.
Yes the HA1080 does work for both prone and surf. As does the MA1225. The MA1225 is closer in size to the HA980 though. The HA and MA work for both winging and prone with the HA being better for prone as it pumps better and the MA being better for wing as it has unparalleled breach recovery. If you are to get one foil, then it really depends on what is your primary sport and what is your secondary. If your primary is prone, then go for the HA. Primary winging then go MA. Both foils have a very progressive power band and are easy to take off with on a wave. Both are very user friendly. HA has better glide. MA better turning. One tip is that the MA ride about 0.5-2cm farther forward in the track than where you would ride the HA foil. If you have an older board with short boxes that are really far back, you might be better off with the HA.
lovely to see the carving of small waves on FOIL - definitely on my to do list... - so silly question but why not just bring a small kite like a Code Zero along? I am biased to kiting, but just seems like a NO BRAINER vs. trying to hold a wing over your head or bothering to paddle and pump - just ride and then grab some kite when you need it? What am I missing???🪁
I kite foil and wing foil and they are really different. With the wing, you can flag it out on the front handle and surf the wave or swell like you are foil surfing. On the kite, you are always connected and have to keep the kite moving so it doesn't fall out of the sky. Personally for wave riding on the wave face with a surfboard, kiteboarding is still superior to winging. When you see guys like Cash Berzolla ripping winging turns in the pocket and ripping around, it will definitely make you consider winging. I normally ride swells on the wing outside the breaking waves or just open ocean swell. Kiting vs winging... One isn't better or worse, they are just different.
@real sold the ma1750 and 1225 and want to purchase the new ha. Have and will keep the ma800 and ma1000. Want to use a ha1180 for dw runs can't decide to go for a 880 or 980 for sup/prone wave foiling and light wind winging. Used the ma1225 als light wind wingfoil. My weignt is 170lbs got al stabs to pair with 140 180 205 220 and 235. Grtz
Cool. Size to size comparison, the 980 rides similar in size to the 1225 so I think that would be the right call for you. 880 might be too close to your 1000. 980 and 1180 will be a sick HA combo for what you are looking to do.
By luck I could use the HA880 today, it was blowing on our lake and used a 2.8. Must say that the 880 blew me away. I took the wing on the handle and could pump and glide on 1-2 feet windchop almost no fetch and shalow water. I never pumpfoiled and now I made really long stretches. Downwind and on a 90 degree angle with the chop will order a 880 haha. I also could easily turn it around and find some push in those small bumps. Stall speed is insane low went very slow into a turn or tack and no problem.
Thanks for the comment. You should get out there and try some of these different foils out for what ever foil sport you are doing. In the past 12 month, Armstrong has released four different foils for four different purposes. DW foil for advanced down wind foiling. APF is an all time pump foil. I don't really dock start much so don't use it much, but for dock starting it is next level. MA was designed for winging and the MA1000 is still my go to foil for winging. The new HA were designed for surf foiling and they are that next level of efficiency for pumping. We are getting to a point with foiling that the different sports are getting foils that excel at those sports. You can cross over(ie. new HA are killer for winging) but they are designed with a specific spec in mind. No shade on the previous models like the HS or first version HA foils. Those were designed 3-4 years ago. The sport has progressed and the gear has as well.
@@REALmattnuzzo Thank you for responding! I’m stoked about the potential of these HAs except I’m upset that it wasn’t made aware while I was spending money on MA 1750 and APF pump both which were sold to me in that time as the friendlier DW foils. My problem is that with the knowledge about upcoming foil choices I could revise my purchases. Now this new foil has glide which had be nice for surfing. Except MAs were supposed to be that 6 months back. Well now I’m stuck with the brand so I’ll spend time and get better but sucks spending more $$s than I wish I had. My mistake so lesson learnt.
@@mayankketkar3450 You are on the right track with the APF and MA for learning to DW, and we would still recommend those for learning to DW. I have both of those for learning to DW and haven't progressed past them yet. The HA1180 can be someone's first DW foil and will have more glide than the above, but it has less lift than the MA1750 and a lot less lift than the APF. The HA1180 would be your next step down in size from those two and next step up for glide over what you have. Then a notch down from that will be the DW930 as the top of the food chain. There are two routes you can take in foiling and both work. Buy the stuff that you will end on first and bang your head against the wall learning. Or... take the mechanical advantage with the gear that is easier to start with and then have to keep investing to more performance gear as you are getting better. Good luck on your DW journey and stay stoked!
@@REALmattnuzzo thanks mate! More and more I’m starting to see my path through these various aspects. Definitely I’m not ready for HAs. So in days since my comment I have found peace in my existing gear and maximizing it. Bought a new pump tail to work on pump technique
What a bunch of subjective fluff. Why not give some objective data or use more technical terms? For example, if you are saying that It has a lower stall speed, tell us what lift coefficient it will produce before stalling. I hate the way you take liberty to make up terms to describe the performance of these foils. There are technical terms to describe how a foil performs.
