I have been hunting in a saddle going on 3 years. They are all just tools. Climbers, hangons, and saddles (plus 5 gal buckets, of course!) to get you in position to harvest a deer. I started in a climber. I have a hangon and a saddle. Your logic is sound. Keep up the good videos!

Old Fred Bear thought that tree stands gave the hunter an unfair advantage. I like the ground game especially in the later frigid months.

I agree with the later months - Ground hunting is much better than putting up a cold metal stand with bare hands and bulky clothing.

Saddle has been a game changer for me. I do a lot of hunting around lakes and the saddle packs in easier for me in the kayak. Less noisy for me also. I think both options are great, just personal preference.

I have killed really good deer out of both, I hunted for years out of hang on, then years out of sit drag diy saddle. I went back to hang on part of this season, then back to sit drag saddle, both have good both have bad. I found that if I am going way in then it is saddle, if I am going in 400-500 yrds, then it is the XOP, which is heavy af. The hang on takes me longer to set up but I allow that time. Like your videos, and your information, and the way you communicate the subject, keep on pushin!!!
Which XOP stand do you have? I have the XOP air raid, which is good for keeping setup on private land since it is heavy but not too heavy for public land if needed.
My run and gun public setup is the Lone Wolf Assault 2 - not the best stand considering what else is out there today, but it works well for public land mobile hunting.

@@RelentlessSportsman I have the xop vanish, and muddy pro sticks, is great set up, and I can go a good ways. I also have molle shoulder straps and waist belt, that help a good deal. Things just get heavy too me when I am trying to sneak that last 150 yards in, and I feel it in my shoulders. I am 6'1" 250, and pretty strong, I go back at least half to three quarters a mile, just about everytime on family land, but I am going to start going in to public this season. I want a better saddle than I have just because if I am going in that far I am going to stay a good while, and I want to be somewhat comfortable. Just seems expensive to get a good saddle. I guess I better man up and make the best of it. Have a good one, thanks for the response.
I'm a ground guy and no blind guy it was the way I was brought up In Northwoods of new Hampshire and won't change lol I love the ground
I do to. I'm just better in a stand. But the ground is far more exciting when deer show up.

ahh...about an hour and half from me.
The best advice I can give you, without being there to see for myself, is located properties with water. If you can use onX or google maps to identify a river, creek or swamp that you can cross, your odds of seeing deer will greatly increase and your odds of seeing other people will greatly decrease.

why does it matter weather your feet get cold in a saddle or in a hang on stand. Ive done both and my feet get cold regardless. Get warmer boots or better socks. Also you can be quiet with any setup with enough practice.
My feet get much colder in a saddle. Must be how the saddle prevents good circulation down through my legs to my feet.
As a content creator, I've heard from many saddle hunters who have experienced the same thing.
It's not the boots or the socks. My boots and socks work just fine when I'm in a stand.
You're right, you can get quiet with any setup. You completely missed the point there.
The point is, I want to be extremely good and quiet with only 1 setup so I'm more consistent when hunting.
The JX3 is a hybrid saddle. You can purchase a seat cushion bottom that will help you stay warm in the colder months or remove ot for warmer months. You can also purchase a head rest for it so you can recline on tjose long all day rut sits. It is really a cross between a hang on and a saddle. Like having a hang on you can rotate around the tree for cover or better shot angles. Good luck on your new venture. Wish I would have seen this video sooner. Just ordered the bullman tree steps today and I would have just bought yours off you.
I've heard about that. It's something I'll consider for next season. My current hang on stand is set up well for run and gun hunting.
I do miss being able to move around the tree.
Sounds like a neat product - something I"ll have to invest research time into during the off season.
@@RelentlessSportsman thanks for the reply. I forgot to mention I also use a xop hangon and viper climber. I use the viper when the tree is perfect, no branches and im doing a long sit. I use the xop when the tree isnt perfect and im doing a low (15 or less) sit. The JXP when the tree isnt perfect, when I need to be really high to get cover (I repel down when im way up in the tree) on a long sit. Honestly I could just use the JX3 100% of the time as it covers all bases but I still use the other two to stay familiar. It is nice to have extra set ups for when hunting friends come from out if state or when teaching a new hunter. I start everyone in the climber as its the simplest to learn. Looking forward to your next harvest.
NIce honest review and video. I'll have to check out your other videos on the pros and cons of climbing stands too! I have two climbers, a fairly modern SUMMIT, and an ancient TREE LOUNGER (which I love but it's way too heavy for any mobile hunts)! This year I've been exclusively on the ground on either a tree seat (The Versatile Tree Blind Seat), or in a ground blind. My wife's not keen about me climbing trees at my advanced age, but on some public water or reservoir hunts, you cannot hunt from the ground!

When you say 'climbing stands', are you referring to stands you use to ascend up the tree and then back down?

I'm not really a fan of small hang-on seat platforms. I fall asleep often, so it just isn't my comfort level.

Almost bought a saddle last week, but watched a ton of videos including your comparison one. Currently I'm hunting out of a millennium m150 (not mobile) for the comfort as I have some physical problems. I typically hunt from sun up to sun down and there is no way I could do that in a saddle on a small platform. Thanks for all the unbiased info!

I appreciated your take on this. I also think the same applies to tree stand hunters. Who cares how you hunt. If it works for you it’s great and if it doesn’t than that’s also great…” for me” jk. I switched to a saddle this year and sold my stand. Has been a Game changer for me because I can use the tree to hide me from the deer. So light to pack in. Also it’s way more comfortable for me. My legs and butt don’t go as numb as they do sitting in a stand. Also being able to shoot 360 is great. But your 💯 right…consistency is key. Hard to get good with a method when you’re constantly switching it up.

I’ve had a similar thought process. I think hunters were less gear oriented before social media. The Saddle Hunter forum, for example, is a very gear heavy forum. There’s some good info there but only a small portion is actual woodmanship. I’m guilty of focusing on gear and not working on the basics like getting more accurate with my bow and finding deer. I’ve had two soft saddle setups and sold or returned both. A hang on and sticks is simple. With a good set of shoulder straps and a waist belt it’s not THAT bad. Also more versatile IMO. I did pick up a JX3 recently but I’m not sure how much I’ll use it outside of gun season. It has a lot going on and weighs about as much as my hang on. I like my back to the tree with my bow in a holder next to me. I don’t have to worry about “weak” or “strong” sides.

Social media has changed how people hunt and look at hunting in general. Too many pictures on instagram, showing equipment, making people believe they need certain gear items to succeed.
I like the should straps and waste band from Lone Wolf Custom Gear. Makes a big difference like you were saying.

I have a saddle and we don’t have the brutal cold. It gets cold and really cold some years but for the most part I don’t have to wear a bunch of layers. I wish I could say it’s because I get it done early lol but it’s because we just don’t get the cold like you get. Anyway I find I have trouble sitting still in the saddle. I told my nephew basically what you just said here. It don’t matter just be mobile or just hunt period. I do like it and I also like hang ones and I would love to have a beast stand but I was like you and chose the saddle because it was what I was seeing the most of when I was researching a new way to get in the tree and really like that I would be tied to the tree at all times. Any way just hunt and enjoy the outdoors as long as you’re being a good person we can get along. Support from Southern Indiana

I need to use bigs and a huge jacket that just wouldn't work well with my saddle.
I used to hunt near Hayward, WI, half mile south of the UP. Unfortunately there aren't many deer up there like there was years ago.

@@RelentlessSportsman I use a heated jacket and that has been a game changer for me. In 56 and can’t take the cold like I used to so have to find solutions. You can find them on eBay or Amazon. I am in Rhinelander.

If you choose to use a saddle, it should just be another tool in the deer killing tool box just like your stand, blind etc, and I have experienced the same issue with my saddle during the cold season. It is very difficult to wear bulky warm cloths and wear a saddle especially if you are a bigger guy.
Yep! Some people have said it's not hard to wear big clothes in a saddle. Idk how that would work though. The boots alone are hard to use on a small platform and/or ring of steps.
I live in Ontario canada lots of snow late season and this is my first saddle year.. I’m hoping I don’t get to cold in the saddle it might transition me back to lock ons.. see what happens
You'll have to try it and see. I tend to get cold faster than most people.

I'm a Wisconsin guy and I prefer the old school climbers. I have all of my trees pre-picked and I can get up as high as I want without making noise, in no time.
saddles are just another fad. The Hunting Public is the driving force behind their rise up in the industry.

Great job on your video presentation. I find that people become very divisive with their personal preferences. It's unfortunate that it keeps people in a box. I believe this may have something to do with the training people have received in public education programs starting from infancy. But it may also be just human nature. Whatever it is , it brings division where none should exist. So great job in bringing your presentation to the front.
Just a F.Y.I I do own both systems due to it having multiple applications for me. I also got rid of my summit climbing stands.. thanks god people have come up with better solutions to our mobile hunting needs.

I agree that how we learn how to hunt and what to use at a young age influences us a lot when we're older.
I still need to look beyond my old ways that sometimes hang me up and keep me from seeing deer.
I used to use a summit climber and liked it a lot but couldn't use it where I saw the most deer.

We've become so sensitive that as soon as someone has a different opinion or idea, we instantly cancel them instead of sitting down and understanding where each person is coming from. Shot an 8point out of my climber 1 mile deep into the woods. Dragged him a mile. I stash mine in bushes about 40 yards from my tree and often change locations when I finish a hunt. Public land is tough. Who cares how you sit!?!? Tons of scouting and hard work to get a great deer. I've got two bucks in my freezer and one being mounted for the wall.....both on public land in SC. If that doesn't make a hunter well then Mr. Saddle go sit with the elitist wannabe types and I'll enjoy my meals with family and friends. Sheez

The problem is, the divisiveness that runs through the US these days seems to bleed into almost every area of interest.
I've had many arguments/discussions with people on my channel who HATE the idea of crossbows, instead of minding their own business and focusing on their own hunting skills.
