I have been listening to this song since it was released. How is this not in rotation on every rock radio station? Dave Alvin wrote an awesome song, John & Exene give soulful vocals, and X gives an American rock classic....
Listening to 91X San Diego while serving on the USS Pollock SSN-603 at Ballast Point from 1982-1988. I miss you San Diego! Happy 4th of July to everyone.
A Sunday evening watching the latest episode of The Sopranos and this song suddenly appears in the closing credits. One more reason David Chase is a genius!
i turned 27 this year. my dad used to play this when i was little (and it was new-ish). it's the first song i remember absolutely loving, listening to over and over and over. now music/live music/etc is my favorite way to spend my time and money, and i play this song evvvvvery year. your kids will thank you one day.
Love this. You're the same age as my youngest daughter, and every now and then she'll call and tell me she heard a song I used to play when she was little.
Every year, first song of the day on the fourth. Got turned on to X by a friend in the military. One afternoon in the barracks we heard a dude in the hallway talking about them playing later that night at the beach. We immediately got ready as the venue didn't sell pre-event tickets and for anyone who knows Jacksonville, it is a long way across town from NAS JAX to the Einstein a Go-Go!
One of the most soulful, awesome rock songs ever. Would play it all day on the 4th, and every year, it would make me want to cry. Don't know why it would do that to me, but probably because it's a very moving song. Love it.
Great song, indeed, and I am an Angeleno, but to say 'without question' is a little bold. I would pick "Almost Independence Day" and "4th of July, Asbury Park" ahead of this X classic.......
I've no idea HOW this song didn't make it into regular rotation upon release, but as I left a sound gig last night and heard this on LSUG and was just blown away, great tune! This band was way under appreciated and incorrectly promoted.
In 1987 I was working at KLPX Tucson AZ and got this CD "X- See How We Are" The third cut is "4th of July" so now every 4th of July I have to hear this song! I played it at bars.... home, car computer and today on my DVD player since my CD player died! Happy 4th of July!
Thank you so much for posting this one. I love Dave Alvin as a songwriter, but hearing John and Exene sing his songs brings an extra element. Man, I love that album.
Thanks for the post!! Should b wayyyy more views. Brilliant song by an amazing band. People don't realize how influential X really were on other bands, and man John Doe can sing.
RR Meeerri Nice!! Great band, I still listen to them all the time..it was cool as hell when The Sopranos featured 4th of July at the end of an episode! I couldn't believe it! I'll bet people looked that up fast.
I bet they sure did look that up fast! That's one of the songs I'd play in my sorority house and the people across the hall (who were the cool ones...way too cool for me I guess)...had to borrow that cassette. "And Who Sings THAT song???!" I love John Doe. He is a fine actor as well.
Awesome song 🎶 I wear my X shirt and play this song every 4th of July. I think my shirt is from 84?..- maybe when they played with the Blaster’s? Thanks for being the best & unknown band in the world 🌎 love from Denver, Colorado
I can always tell if a song is going to be a hit the first time I hear it. This is the only song I can remember where I was wrong. It should be a hit. I can’t believe it’s not on Apple Music.
I saw this tour in 1986, and I have been hooked on this band ever since. Dave Alvin's words just kill me in this song. I identify with them too much. "I don't have the strength to go to the lost side of town, in a dark apartment...We gave up trying so long ago." I still don't have the strength, but sometimes it's necessary.
The best 4th of July song ever. Dave Alvin's own version rules. Kind of surprized more country and rock artists don't cover more of his songs. Dave Alvin has a treasure trove of great songs.
I love this song and it wouldn't be 4th of July for me without hearing it about 100 times. I love the line, "Whatever happened, I apologize..." Those four words say about a million things!
Rich H for sure woodlawn. i should know -i was in a band with john. we even rented a house after graduation. jack chipman and pete wulfhurst. those were some days. im still friends with john.
I love the upload date. I think that particular day I listened to this song 10x on the fire escape on the Sante Fe building on 6th and Main in Los Angeles smoking an entire back of Marlboro Reds.

Hey Baby, It’s the Fourth of July!” God bless you Cynthia!! 🖤 “She gives me cheek when I want her lips!”
Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU !! - I drag this song out every summer to celebrate my least favorite holiday - Some people only think about it once in every twenty years, but I try to keep the feeling alive more often than that. What a treat it was to live in Los Angeles in the era of the Blasters, Black Flag and X - I'm a lucky man and I doubly lucky that this fantastic video has finally been posted. Thanks to the submitter and thanks to my favorite band.
Can we please have a quarantine on the word "underrated"??? Yes, X was AWESOME, I agree. But "underrated" is just another word for "ppl should like what *I* like". :)
God I love this song. To me one of the greatest songs ever. I love 4th of July because I can play this song all day, sing it at the top my lungs and my family doesn’t look at me like I’m crazy.
Ive been a fan of this band since I was about 12 or 13. I'm 21 now and this song didn't have to much meaning to me until this last 4th of July. Brings back some great memories but some sad ones at the same time. Saw them about a week latter after this that day and was hoping they would play it but sadly they didn't. Still a classic song that will take me back
Yes, good to hear this generation still admires the work of bands like X, The Blasters, Minutemen etc. I moved out from "meat and potatoes" Ohio back in 1982. It's almost like I listen to 'Alice's Restaurant" every thanksgiving day...

One of the greatest American songs ever written and performed by one of the greatest American bands!
Dave Alvin wrote this chunky morsel.
They didn't write it, though. It's a cover. ;-P
THIS is where they got too old for Punk and knew it, so they changed.
I agree, "see how we are" was another great song as well
@@KevinJerseyShore Dave was in X.

So awesome...Havent heard the mention of 91X in forever... use to go back and forth between that and kroq....
You're listening to 91X, the cutting edge of rock.
60,00 watts , listening to border radio
Born and raised in SD, Navy folks are always welcomed my friend.
Another Dave Alvin masterpiece.
👍
No one gives a shit that you know who wrote the song lol
He has been overlooked.
@@terrywinn2278 Along with The Blasters.
I remember one 4th of July in the late 80's and KROQ in Los Angeles played this song every half an hour! It was a great 4th!
Almost makes up for Carson Daly
@Scot Yeah, I'm still Cool....
I remember that I though it was kool but today I hope ppl remember how nice it was then
I was up in the Bay, but I had the 45rpm single and played that a lot.
I saw them New Year's Eve, 1985, at Santa Monica Civic. It was their "Ain't Love Grand" tour. A lot of fans didn't like the album, but I loved it.
Hey, baby, it's the 4th of july. Think of this song every year--very SoCal. Fantastic.

Mind Blowing that this song is 30 years old!!! Sounds better than ever

I dunno.... the Galaxie 500 song of the same title is a major contender, too.
Soundgarden.
I agree. Galaxie 500 and U2 have good ones as well.
The Beach Boys song, "4th of July" is great too, but I love this one!

Me too in love that is .. heard the Band too long ago
You may find it interesting that Exene Cervenka of X was once married to Viggo Mortensen. Or maybe not.
Just found them today on Spotify! Been playing them all afternoon!
Please check out all their stuff that preceded this. They were an important punk band

Heard this for the first time on 94.5 THE EDGE in Dallas in the early 90s. Takes me back to that summer and young, turbulent love.
Just saw John Doe AND Phil and Dave Alvin twice at SXSW. Dave sang this at the end of their second set. Great music that stands up.
