As lineups go, that one was pretty incredible. But they never truly gelled as a team unit - the players themselves have talked about how the squad was split along club lines with separate cliques that didn't interact off the pitch - and thus they underachieved even more noticeably than other England sides over the years. Maybe if Rooney wasn't injured early in the quarters, they might have gone on to success. Sadly, we'll never know.

Although the Three Lions with Rooney, Beckham, Scholes, Lampard &Co. never won the World Cup or the European Cup, they were definitely one of the best England teams of the past 30 years. If those 22 players last night met for a game of football in a park and didn't know each other, England would absolutely destroy them. The talent in the England team is miles ahead of Slovenia. It's purely psychological and tactical with England. You need a big ego managing that squad. Not a PE teacher. Get Ancelotti or Conte for the laugh.
