Ole was unlucky. Great sub for several seasons, then Becks left and Ole played right wing. He was excellent, possibly even better than Beckham. Really thoughtful crosses, just like a striker would want, and a goal threat from open play too. Then he got a bad knee injury. Never recovered and retired a few years later.

@@chrishammond4381 I was there mate. I was at every Home game in old Trafford in that period, and saw Beckham from his debut, through his "purgatory" after the World Cup, and his two "Purple Patch" seasons , where he outran and wore down every full back he played against, which earned him his transfer to Madrid, ( as well as his shirt sales) He was a very good player, even without his dead ball skills.
Ole on the right wing for that one season, before his injury, was at least his equal. His crosses were more thoughtful, (as an ex centre forward he knew when and how to play a through ball) he was a bit quicker over 6 yards (Becks was never teh quickest) and had a killer shot when cutting in from the right ( rarely part of Becks game)

Scholes the quiet man the media didn't pay much attention to thankfully. He made so many of Ferguson's teams tick. He could turn defence into attack in the blink of an eye with his quick precision passing. Most of the time not looking up as he'd already seen where players were before the ball arrived at his feet.
Poor old Alan, constantly stating he doesn't regret turning down the chance 'twice' to play in those wonderful sides. Grandad did you really turn them down twice lol !

What made this a great team performance was that Utd played Real Madrid 3 or 4 days earlier and got hammered. Lost 3-1 away in CL. Newcastle at St. James Park during these years was a tough place to go to. Utd bouncing back as hard and aggressively as they did showed so much character that modern day football teams could not match or even come close to! Utd were not good up to Dyer goal and its like it awoke a beast that went on a rampage for 20 minutes. Its the only time I have ever seen the Newcastle fans silent and emotionless in the crowd and Sir Bobby Robson speechless after the game

I remember a couple of seasons earlier Newcastle won this fixture 5-0 ....... there were banners, T-shirts, mugs, T-towels and all sorts of commemorative tat. And that was the difference in these days, you don't win titles with hysteria.
