To anyone watching this who's younger than about 30: the thing you have to understand about Scholes is he's a player whose true essence can't really be captured in a highlights compilation. The passing, goals and control you see here are all great, but the true beauty of Scholes was the way he completely dictated the tempo of games. He dominated his opponents week in, week out. But, much like the man himself, the way he did it was quiet, unassuming and under the radar. That's why he is so often underrated, especially by people who don't understand anything beyond goal and assist stats. The great attackers at United came and went over the years but United remained the dominant force in England. Because Scholes was always there. Quietly dominating.

He was phenomenal. He could change game to how he saw fit. Saw it with my very eyes countless times at old trafford. One minute he'd be playing one touch with his team mates and advancing through a tight midfield the next he'd just switch it and spray homing missiles 40/50 yards. If he was anywhere near the area the other team couldnt afford to give him a yard otherwise he'd set his body up and munter it in. If they gave him no space he could use every part of his foot to get through and keep the ball moving constantly. Scored an ungodly amount of headers as well considering his height (which goes unnoticed). With the exception of a very few who visited old trafford in the champions league id never seen another player have so much mastery over a match. He controlled it all, everything went through him. Mad player.
One of the best players ever. If you played football at a decent level you know just how good he was, look at other professionals say he was pure class.
People forget Scholes played as a #10 early on and scored a lot of goals, he dropped deep and was a world class controlling midfielder. He could do it all (except tackle)
Except that as the video shows, he actually could tackle. His "bad" tackles were often deliberate and he got away with a lot because of the myth that he couldn't tackle lol
What a load of shite. Clear evidence in this video of great slide tackling ability. He'd be capable of stupid costly fouls every now and then, giving him a bad reputation for his tackling ability, but really he was right up there, especially slide tackles. Not much in it between him and keane, on-the-floor tackling, and both equally had reputation for fouling, 1 a bit dirty 1 a bit clumsy. Edit: nvm on 2nd thought, having watched a highlights video of keane, he was unmatched when tackling😂
What a player! Short passes, long passes, long shots, close shots, headers, press resistance, one touch passes, tackles, slide tackles, interceptions, dribbles etc and he could do it all very effectively. It’s hard to find complete consistent midfielder’s like him nowadays. Truly a legend! No wonder he was one of the 5 world class players for SAF.👌👏💯

In my defense lol I started to watch prem when cr7 joined and was mainly focused on him. Before the 04/05 season I didn’t watch any games and the games after that I wasn’t paying close attention to Scholes. In the compilation it did look like he could put a tackle or two.
@leemc5646 That's a very odd opinion considering he was the role model of Xavi, Iniesta and Kroos. A quick look on UA-cam would show you otherwise, but Luckily people will listen more to geniuses like Guardiola over you.
Paul scholes was the finest mid field player England has ever had . His weight of pass, precision and accuracy was second to none. When he pulled the trigger there was no stopping it, and I watched him score many goals both for England and man United. He is definitely one of football's greats. A truly entertaining player.

Brilliant comp. Thanks for highlighting his ball-winning ability too. His tackles were often dirty but his aggression and ability to read the game meant he was an absolute engine for winning possession back. We only have Opta stats for him from when he was 35 and older, but based on just that his tackles and interception rates are higher than any of the top creative midfielders in Europe - higher than Gerrard and Lampard too, who people claim were better defensively. He had it all.
What an absolute legend! He was involved in every movement on the pitch! When he retired in 2011, I always felt he still had more to give... then when he announced he was coming back for 1 more season... you just knew it was gonna be magical!!!
Thank God I was lucky to have been a contemporary of such a player. I was able to see the last years of his career but even so, it is enough for me to determine that it was the best I have ever seen. Thanks for so much football, Paul.
It's funny when you watch him play, he always seems like he's going for the "simple" play, the "easy" way to find success... it just so happens that for Scholesy the easy way is a 60yard bomb of a ball hit perfectly with the outside of his foot. Brilliant player, he makes it look so easy, such a confidence in his play and decision making
What I loved the most about Scholes was his ability to take hits and not cry about it. Seen a clip where Patrick Viera does him 3 times and Scholes barely aknowledges him and just gets up and runs away with the ball on every occasion. You could read Vieras mind like...Well that didn't work. 🤷♂️
Watched his whole career at Old Trafford. He was relentlessly awesome. He always knew what he was going to do with the ball, before it arrived at his foot. Had a hard shot from distance too, so if he moved close to the box, a defender got sucked in to him close him down.
When you watch games from 15-20 years ago you can see how much creativity has reduced in today's game. I think the desire to keep possession has made it so players are less willing to try something risky and you just don't get moments like these as often as we did.

But Paul did not want the fame and Beckham did. Paul was recognised by the players of the highest level that he was the most complete midfielder of his time.
Scholesy could change the tempo of the game with one simple pass. One of the most accurate long range passing and shooting. A class above all. A different breed.

As a United fan I was always glad Paul was under the radar. The media would focus on Giggs or Beckham and other teams midfield players like Gerrard and Lampard. It meant he wasn't relentlessly pursued by teams like Barca or Real and perhaps managers coming to Old Trafford would be more worried about other players. Comparisons are always pointless but those who watched Paul play at Old Trafford and away grounds knew just how important he was to Ferguson's teams.
