    According wikipedia: "The Battle of Gaugamela, also called the Battle of Arbela, took place in 331 BC between the forces of the Army of Macedon under Alexander the Great and the Persian Army under King Darius III. It was the second and final battle between the two kings, and is considered to be the final blow to the Achaemenid Empire, resulting in its complete conquest by Alexander."

      Hate to be that guy, but while it is a cool name, it doesn't make sense from the lore standpoint. The re-imagined BSG timeline established that the entire Twelve Colonies of Cobol history predates the Earth's history by 150 000 years, so this battlestar would exist tens of thousands of years before the actual battle of Gaugamela took place.

    • @AmandaFessler
      @AmandaFessler 2 роки тому +2

      @@RayPall I understand where you're coming from, no worries. I tend to be that guy myself. But RDM BSG has a tendency to do a lot of... I forgot the word... It's where old names are repurposed for new instances. Things like New York, New Jersey, these place of course named for York and Jersey, and even in the story's case, New Caprica. The Olympian mythology is in full swing with some differences, of course, presumably because over the 150,000 years, it evolved/was forgotten/rediscovered. We have Battlestars named Columbia and Atlantia, which have their own distinct IRL lore, but must clearly have some sort of significance in Colonial culture to be given to Jupiter-class units. Who's to say that Gaugamela isn't some old Colonial name that had its own significance before the fall, and that being the site of Alexander's final battle against Darius is a coincidence? It's just my tendency to imagine Watsonian answers to questions like this. Of course the Doylian answer is that the Devs threw in a bunch of ancient names to fit BSG's theme of using ancient names for their warships, and there's no way it would have been named after Alexander's battlefield. That said, the name is part of the random generator, and so even knowing the Doylian answer, I can't help but try to find Watsonian explanations for it, because it helps exercise my creativity and imagination. Plus it's a lot of fun to speculate like this! Have a nice day. :)

      Having seen how well (not) Cylon Baseships perform in actual combat, I don't think they'd want them. Cylon ship design is so horribly broken in the Second War that it's not even a joke. It's like they learned nothing at all from the Frist Cylon War.
      OK, that's unfair. They learned a lot. Just not enough. They learned to be patient and only attack when the time is right. They learned that when they do attack, make it absolutely *CRIPPLING*. They learned that humans can make a deadly ship of war almost without regard to the limitations your technical superiority grants you. What they did *NOT* learn is that missiles, being by nature fragile things, are easily stopped by flak, and thus unsuitable as primary armaments. Nor did they learn that capital ships need to be built tough enough to survive being hammerred. Nor did they learn that war is not a game and you don't play with the last remnants of your defeated enemy.

    To be fair, you didn't have the start of the battle as the same... For it to feel like the Battle of New Caprica, having a Jupiter in the middle of four Battlestars, no fighters, with a Mercury approaching from outside that formation, would've been the starting point. (Granted, not sure how much modding you'd need to get that going in Deadlock).
    Admittedly, my main issue with the battle was Lee not recognizing that thinning the enemy ranks is a more effective strategy to save the Galactica than making Pegasus a target. The initial alpha strike took out a quarter of the Cylon capital forces- but instead of capitalizing on it and turning a broadside to a second Basestar (which would be able to launch a second alpha strike, or just pound the living crap out of the next one), he just tries to take Galactica's place in the center of the Cylon kill zone.

    The key to success in battle is applying maximum force at the point of attack, you never go into battle with half your available strength. This battle could have been won with both battlestars surviving because the objective was never to defeat the 4 basestars but to distract them long enough for the ships on the surface to evacuate.
    1st Battlestar folds in as a distraction begins engagement with full air wing (Galactica)
    2nd Battlestar folds into close low orbit (Pegasus) and launches 1/2 of it's air wing to the planet like they did in the series 1/2 to engage the basestars own raiders.
    You have the basestars bracketed with your main batteries on both sides and you can begin to draw them away from the planet while the civies evacuate.

      It's likely also infinitely cheaper; with chemical drives you can mine asteroids and comets for the chemicals needed, and asides from the guidance, fuze, and warhead, your electronics needs are small, and could easily be met by having a chip manifactory in a cargo bay you feed raw materials into.
      However, fusion drives require a lot more specialized parts,magnetics,and computer control to work, which drives up materials costs and time to make, both of which are vital to keep in mind if your dumping hundreds or thousands of missiles in a engagement.

Losing the more modern of the battlestars wasn't even the wrong move (Galactica survived the Fall because the CNP hack didn't bother them at all, Pegasus survived the Fall from a sheer dumb luck blind jump, keeping a Jupiter was the better idea) but they ALMOST lost Galactica too. To be fair it's pretty easy on a skirmish, in MP not as much.
    I think the writing could've been different in the show tho. You want to kill a battlestar, and it can't be Galactica since that's the main (battle)star of the show.
    The way the writers did it is making Lee a bumbling idiot who disobeyed orders and rushed the greatest asset of mankind into an obvious suicide position with the intention of loosing the ship to save an outdated, unmantained heavily damaged ship.
    If they really wanted to kill Pegasus off they could've at least spent the effort to write an interesting battle where the Pegasus fights in a reasonable manner, but a few unlucky hits from a clever Cylon flank damages the jump drives, and then you can do the whole suicide ram move and the shitshow that the battle was.
    At least it would give some credit to the Cylons who for most of the show seemed like they couldn't kill a single fleet group, let alone the entire fleet without their surprise attack with hacks, and repeatedly failed to destroy a ship that's over fifty years old, and a literal flying museum.

    • @korbin58
      @korbin58 2 роки тому +1

      One thing I'll mention in favor of the Galactica, It *was* outdated, poorly maintained, and at half-strength due to the constant flight from the cylons and the colonization efforts, but it was noted that the reason the Galactica was capable of withstanding as much as it did was because it was simply built as a much more capable and dangerous capital ship than the Mercury-class. The Mercury-class automated a LOT of the systems that Galactica had to handle manually, and I believe they were, in-lore anyways, capable of fielding several more squadrons than a Jupiter-class. But this also resulted in them being vulnerable to cybernetic attacks, they weren't as heavily armored as the Jupiter-class, and they lacked the raw firepower that the Jupiter-class entailed.
      In a knock down drag out fight between a base star and a battlestar, if it falls to the ability to slug it out between the ships? The Jupiter-class is the more capable of the two. But if the Mercury had all of its squadrons and had a healthy amount of standoff range? The Mercury would be better.
      While I understand they didn't want to leave the fleet undefended, had Lee taken his squadrons with them then it very possibly could've ended with both battlestars surviving and possibly two or more basestars being destroyed/heavily damaged.
      Another thing I never understood is why nukes were never used in this battle. The Galactica was well within main and secondary battery range of the Base Stars to the point that they would have had to try really hard to not hit the Cylon ships. A nuclear launch at that range would be difficult for raiders to intercept, and the resulting blast would not have been enough to stand up to the radiation shielding the Galactica possessed.

      In the battle of New Caprica, from my understanding, the Galactica had what remained of both the Pegasus's and Galactica's remaining trained crew, as the rest were left on New Caprica when they were forced off. Had the Galactica been lost in that battle, the civilian ships leaving wouldn't have had enough of a window to leave, and the Pegasus would've been left with barely even a skeleton crew to operate it, and only a few thousand colonial civilians to fill the ranks, and no Viper pilots to speak of, and they would've probably died during the battle of the Ionian Nebula, if not earlier

      The point of leaving Galactica to survive instead of Pegasus is not only because of which one was the better ship... but because of morale. If Galactica was lost, the moral of the whole fleet, and even the military, will go REALLY down. After all, Galactica was the "hero ship", with the legendary commander Adama, who was in the original Cylon War, and both saved the fleet from all of the Cylon attacks, and stood with them all this time. If it was destroyed, along with Adama, the morale of the whole fleet will be on the floor. Pegasus had a dark past, and many will not get used to it being the protector, even with Lee in charge. That is another factor to take in mind. Do not underestimate the morale in a situation where only a few thousands of humans remain in an universe full of dangers.

      @@vulturegamingandairsoft2104 It might've made more sense in-universe, but Galactica was as much a character in the show as the cast. It wasn't just a name. Part of the appeal of the show was being on the run in a tired fifty year old warship, not a state of the art vessel. For me, watching Pegasus arrive at Earth would've been nowhere near as satisfying as seeing a beaten up Galactica glide over the moon.
      Besides which, the Pegasus set was considerably smaller. You never would've got the incredible production value of the Galactica CIC or corridor sets again. So this was done in the game battlestar galactica Deadlock. So I tried to make it as quick as possible before the cylon ships ran out of missiles. But if u think about it makes sense even in the context of the show. I.e. the cylons used missiles exclusively on their basestars when the colonial ships used both missiles and ballistics. The concept of this video was that Lee adama should've brought his vipers to the battle as they wouldn't be able to do any meaningful damage against a basestar alone so they would've been able to help keep the raiders at bay and then just keep the cylon basestars at distance as to be able to maximize the effectiveness of their flak rounds. Further than that if u actually look at the official wiki page for the Pegasus the ship should've had no problem taking on those basestars. The missile full conital to missiles is y the galactica was able to survive until the end of the show which old age and short cuts in construction is really what killed her before the battle of the colony. If the cylons took a handgun and shot at them 1 time per basestar every encounter and hit the ship, the galactica would've been destroyed by the end of the battle of new caprica.

    The gameplay was fine, its the game itself that annoys me. Radio discipline is a thing for good reasons, flooding your primary (or only) tactical control circuit with INTERNAL COMMS is not helpful. Likewise allowing every Tom, Dick and Harriet to blurt pointless irrelevancies.
    You have a C3I circuit, bloody use it! Actual relevant information would be so much more useful and immersive. If the game's engine can't handle that, then how about using this circuit for tactical maneuver signaling? Every time you direct one of your ships to change formation, have that echoed over the radio.
    Anyway, as I said, you played a good game. I just feel that this real-time battle sim's designers need to get to sea during naval exercises just to get some idea of what's involved. Probably not on a Yank ship, though, as my experience is that they can get a little excitable.

      Agree. However this can transmissions can be put out on any channel and the game is just playing the audio because it sounds cool or whatever. Also that's asking for common sense of game producers, which aint so common. I.e. big offices like Activision just use airsoft guns to model their games. The last cod game literally had a hicap winding wheel on the bottom of the mag of some of the m4 variants.

      I did because I found it annoying for the same reason you did, I get that - like the sound effects for guns fireing etc. - it's just filling the soundscape with battle sounds to convey the chaos and danger facing your troops in what would otherwise be a silent battle, but I found it personally found it jarring in a way the sounds effects aren't.

That was my thought when it was a brand new episode that week, and its still my thought now. When i did it on Deadlock, i didnt even use the air groups. Left the birds on the deck to similulate leaving the air wing as ground support. Ultimately they werent needed using PDCs for what PDCs are for and utilizing proper flak suppression and letting Battlestars work to their proper strengths against basestars and stand-off attrition fighting. Its pretty simple. Theres no way cylons walk away after picking a fight with colonial forces. Yea their alpha strike with surprise on their side is brutal, but they're one shot poneys. After the initial shock and awe, its a colonial fight after that. Just settle in and go for the long haul.

For instance the galactica alone had at least 4 squadrons of vipers at any given time during the first Cylon war, in the game you only get 2 and in cannon battlestars could switch individual canons to fire flak rounds.
