  • Disassembly of one of my IBM Model m2 keyboards, this one is the UK variety.
Shows where to place buckling springs on reassembly on both UK and USA keyboards.
Details of repair to circuit board, non functioning keyboard, all lights stay on etc.
    Capacitors to replace are :
    C3 (smaller one) 2.2microfarad 50v
    C1 47 microfarad 16v
    Any suggestions please comment :)

Yes, thanks for that, it was really useful. I could add that some of the bigger keys have extra fixing bits, and should be removed after the surrounding keys, so you can see and release these extra bits: Spacebar, Return, R-Shift, Backspace, Ins, Enter (num pad), + (num pad) ... and vice versa on reassembly. Once all keys removed you can get to the 13 plastic lugs holding the bottom of the keyboard.

Thanks for taking the time to create this. Thanks to you, I can type this on a just-reassembled 1992 M2. Yep, the caps were the problem, with the 2.2uF one having leaked over the controller board. Traces were fine, though, so a cleanup and replace was good enough to get it back into perfect working order. Hats off to you, sir!

Thanks for your comment Danny, using my M2 now to type this, beautiful keyboard! Shame so many have been binned due to the caps leakage, but well done for taking the same to save your own little piece of computing history!

Just ordered some caps. My soldering skills and equipment aren't great eather, but I'll try this at least. Thanks for the video.

Hi Janne, thanks for your comment. All I can really recommend is - take your time, deep breaths and much patience! The tracks are fairly big, so if you do damage them, they aren't too difficult to repair. Good luck!

Thanks for this mate! just ordered one and I'll have it in a few days. Hoping it's not faulty yet but when it does happen I'll have this to follow.

All you need to do to fix the springs is stick some needle nosed pliers into the coil and gently bend them back.

I don't think those springs can be repaired, but it seems like it should be a really chesp thing to replace.

Thanks for the video. I replaced the capacitors but when I plug the keyboard caps lock and scroll lock LEDs light up, then numlock flashes really quick and they all turn off. Keyboard doesn't work, obviously. Any tips on what the problem might be?

Same for me, replacing electrolytes didnt solve the problem. I can actually make it work, after several USB connector plug/unpluggings, num lock remains lit and keyboard works, but only for a couple of minutes and than stops. Two things come to mind: 1. faulty PS/2- USB converter: 2. some of the small SMD capacitors from the backside of PCB. I would need to check them all out, just dont have the time right now.

Does anyone know if model f or model m keyswitches can be used in place of Cherry switches?
