saddest thing of all is maybe that men my age went en masse to the fronts expecting a glorious honorable battle. Everyone is Europe wanted war before the war. War was considered an honorable duel between 2 lands. Not this time, alliances had been set and when one european country goes to war pretty much the whole world goes to war (all european lands and their colonies). So WW1 changed the rules forever. They had had war before but this was a new beast. WW1 was something else entirely.

Nobody understood what the new tools of mechanized death would be capable of. Repeating, breech-loading artillery and machine-guns and repeating rifles and hand grenades and poison gas made soldiers into meat for the grinder. Nobody could gain or lose ground, unable to advance into the teeth of that buzzsaw, and the leaders with a pistol in their back said go into it or die here and now. Going bought them maybe a minute or two morebefore their blood joined the rest in a great sea of death. Red mud made from the lifeblood of the slain, swallowing the living and the dead alike. A hell of human making beyond all reckoning. We pray never again.

I visited Paschendale because of this song and paid my respects to the ww1 cemetery. Such needless death back then, now a peaceful and quiet village on its place. Most of the tombstones had "a soldier of the great war" and "known unto god" on them, nothing else. Up the Irons from Greece!

I visited Amiens and the Somme Battlefield because of Sabaton's songs about WW1. The battlefield, now used as farmland with tons of the deep orange poppies, is vast and somber. On this land is also the Australian War Memorial with a museum and cemetery. I had no idea about the ANZAC soldiers, or how many countries were involved in this war. So, learning that Sabaton musicians were influenced by Iron Maiden, I looked up the Iron Maiden songs that I'd never heard, and now have another great band to listen to, and hear their songs and lyrics about history and literature.

The video combined with the lyrics makes my blood chill. I can't imagine (and don't want to imagine) how the real scene must've looked like, but what I do know is that the selfless sacrifice of millions of soldiers throughout all the wars should never be forgotten. It's scary how easy humanity forgets that soldiers are all men of flesh and blood. Look around you. All the young men you see are the ones that would've died on the battlefields during war. Your father, brothers, family, friends, and so forth, imagine them sacrificing themselves on a battlefield like this.

Still my favorite Maiden song. The more raw and brutal, yet still very melodic sound fits so perfectly with the theme. The song is rather complex, it doesn't follow any typical structure, it feels organic, like you're really listening to a horrifying war story.
Half of the story is told with the instruments, through the silent, calm parts between the heavy metal splendour, the outstanding guitar solos and riffs. While the other half is of course told through Bruce's powerful vocals.
The lyrics to this song are probably Maiden's best, perfectly describing the brutality of the battle while still making it feel human, and the more philosophical thoughts fit perfectly, neither feeling forced nor cheesy.
A truly great piece. Listening to this song feels like watching a movie. The music alone conjures forth everything you need to perfectly visualize it, to be there, and that is just amazing.

There are some Sabaton songs that fit that especially some like Price of a Mile, Clifs of Galipoli, hammer has fallen. Due to the fact that is Power metal instead that tends to be a bit less emotional. If you want more emotional, darker but more melodic- Savatage-Dead Winter Dead

Many of the involved in the war willingly took part. Northern Soldiers in the battle of the Somme were volunteers, including underaged lads who wanted to fight side by side with their friends and neighbors for their country, for example. The war wasn't just a gloomy experience, it was the entirety of human experience wrapped into a massive bloody event - with many of the participants clamoring for action to escape the unbearable boredom of the trench formed stalemate. That said, Passchendaele was just a bloody fucking mess.

Giving orders for 18 years to charge to their death by the hundreds of thousands, teenagers seeing human beings being shredded up like paper and to top off the sick misery that pashendale was all the guts, blood, limbs and whatever comes out of people when machined gunned down was left in the mud or more appropriatly the ooze, That allowed the rats and vermin to feed and enjoy a much better existence than all those men there did. I thank Iron Maiden for bringing the sick reality of pashendale to light. I believe there was not a bad guy / good guy in ww1, there was blame to go all around, obviously some much more than others.. I know , thanks to Maiden, that it wasnt those young soldiers fault on both sides. I believe the proof that ww1 was not a great war but a horrendously stupid war of slaughter for simply power and greed -- for the war mongrels who gave us ww2 and brought Mass murder of humans to a whole new level. They got the idea of there genocidal belief when they were just lucky enough to live the insane death charges of ww1. Having soldiers charge into machine gun fire, cannon fire, into mustard gas. Thats not what you order soldiers to do,thats something you would order animals to do. So when the animals took over germany, they started killing people like they were ants and made old Kaiser Whilhelm look like mother Teresa.

In a foreign field he lay
    Lonely soldier, unknown grave
On his dying words he prays
    Tell the world of Paschendale
Relive all that he's been through
    Last communion of his soul
Rust your bullets with his tears
Let me tell you 'bout his years
Laying low in a blood filled trench
Kill Tim 'til my very own death
On my face I can feel the falling rain
    Never see my friends again
In the smoke, in the mud and lead
Smell the fear and the feeling of dread
Soon be time to go over the wall
Rapid fire and the end of us all
Whistles, shouts and more gun fire
Lifeless bodies hang on barbed wire
Battlefield nothing but a bloody tomb
Be reunited with my dead friends soon
    Many soldiers eighteen years
Drown in mud, no more tears
Surely a war no-one can win
    Killing time about to begin
    Home, far away
From the war, a chance to live again
    Home, far away
But the war, no chance to live again
The bodies of ours and our foes
The sea of death it overflows
In no man's land, God only knows
Into jaws of death we go
Crucified as if on a cross
Allied troops they mourn their loss
    German war propaganda machine
Such before has never been seen
Swear I heard the angels cry
Pray to god no more may die
So that people know the truth
    Tell the tale of Paschendale
    Cruelty has a human heart
Every man does play his part
Terror of the men we kill
The human heart is hungry still
I stand my ground for the very last time
Gun is ready as I stand in line
Nervous wait for the whistle to blow
Rush of blood and over we go
Blood is falling like the rain
    Its crimson cloak unveils again
The sound of guns can't hide their shame
And so we die on Paschendale
    Dodging shrapnel and barbed wire
Running straight at the cannon fire
Running blind as I hold my breath
Say a prayer symphony of death
As we charge the enemy lines
A burst of fire and we go down
    I choke a cry but no-one hears
Fell the blood go down my throat
    Home, far away
From the war, a chance to live again
    Home, far away
But the war, no chance to live again
See my spirit on the wind
Across the lines, beyond the hill
Friend and foe will meet again
    Those who died at Paschendale

@@fusososososo3507 Good point...but aren't all wars avoidable...they're mostly due to greed, power and more greed.
Unfortunately back then, they had no choice once they were in uniform. They did what they were told.. fight, or be shot for cowardice.
I am and always will be very grateful for their sacrifices to give us what we have today.

Albin Thorsén I swear I play this song to hear the line and I can’t stop singing it and I think girls at my school question my sanity when they hear me belting out random lyrics of songs like this one because my favorite lyrics are ‘“laying low in a blood filled trench” and “home, far away, from the war, a chance to live again”, and “into jaws of death we go” ( they think I’m talking to them and they just stare at me like I have a gun or something) amongst other big four metal (dio, Sabbath, Maiden, and Metallica ), but I don’t give a shit what the girls think. God gave me this voice and imma sing bout WWI with it

    8. Paschendale
    [Smith / Harris]
In a foreign field he lay
    Lonely soldier, unknown grave
On his dying words he prays
    Tell the world of Paschendale
Relive all that he's been through
    Last communion of his soul
Rust your bullets with his tears
Let me tell you 'bout his years
Laying low in a blood filled trench
Kill time 'til my very own death
On my face I can feel the falling rain
    Never see my friends again
In the smoke, in the mud and lead
Smell the fear and the feeling of dread
Soon be time to go over the wall
Rapid fire and end of us all
Whistles, shouts and more gun fire
Lifeless bodies hang on barbed wire
Battlefield nothing but a bloody tomb
Be reunited with my dead friends soon
    Many soldiers eighteen years
Drown in mud, no more tears
Surely a war no-one can win
    Killing time about to begin
    Home, far away
From the war, a chance to live again
    Home, far away
But the war, no chance to live again
The bodies of ours and our foes
The sea of death it overflows
In no man's land, God only knows
Into jaws of death we go
Crucified as if on a cross
Allied troops they mourn their loss
    German war propaganda machine
Such before has never been seen
Swear I heard the angels cry
Pray to god no more may die
So that people know the truth
    Tell the tale of Paschendale
    Cruelty has a human heart
Every man does play his part
Terror of the men we kill
The human heart is hungry still
I stand my ground for the very last time
Gun is ready as I stand in line
Nervous wait for the whistle to blow
Rush of blood and over we go
Blood is falling like the rain
    Its crimson cloak unveils again
The sound of guns can't hide their shame
And so we die on Paschendale
    Dodging shrapnel and barbed wire
    Running straight at cannon fire
Running blind as I hold my breath
Say a prayer symphony of death
As we charge the enemy lines
A burst of fire and we go down
    I choke a cry but no-one hears
Feel the blood go down my throat
    Home, far away
From the war, a chance to live again
    Home, far away
But the war, no chance to live again
    Home, far away
From the war, a chance to live again
    Home, far away
But the war, no chance to live again
See my spirit on the wind
Across the lines, beyond the hill
Friend and foe will meet again

    From a Canadian perspective:
WW1 is very important in our military history.
Most of the Canadian soldiers that died, they died in WW1.
Their deaths were needless, bad strategy & tactics.
I encourage everyone in our Armed Forces to learn more about WW1.
Every Canadian soldier is a potential general.
As a general, the highest priority is the safety of the common troops under your command.
In a military sense, WW1 was our greatest failure. So many died under bad leadership.
In the sense of remembrance, I ask all of our Canadian soldiers to study, and, remember the history of WW1.
In a military sense, in the sense of tactics & strategy, I believe WW1 was our greatest failure.
    Remembrance,
    John of Canada

still, so many lives lost. If the Netherlands had taken part as well, we would be a part of germany right now, since we would have lost too many to resist at all in WW2.

+Lord Lousos Absolutely, the Allies also made a mistake by ignoring almost all contributions to the Treaty of Versailles by the empire of Japan, which was, at the time, part of the Allies. This was just one of the many mistakes that brought Japan to the edge, and eventually to the Axis Powers.

    • @LeHappiste
      @LeHappiste 7 років тому

Versailles wasnt harsh and the reparations were a joke
Getting tired of uneducated cretins like you who spout memes they learnt in "educational" youtube videos...
The truth is that Versailles was too lenient.
Germany was left a united country, free on any foreign occupation and the reprations were cancelled as soon as the global economical crisis (Great Depression) hit them
You can compare that with the much harsher Post-WW2 peace by the US and the Soviets that left Germany divided in two and constantly occupied (still is to this day) by foreign militaries.
And huess what? This harsher peace worked better.
Germany was extremely nationalistic in 1918, and they'd have tried to get revenge regardless of how Versailles had turned
In the end, Versailles being too lenient is what allowed them tro try and get their revenge by starting WW2

Best post-reunion song Maiden has done. Belongs up there with their greatest hits. A masterpiece!

My friend, you should not tell with such high zest
      ,
To children ardent for some desperate glory,
The old Lie: Dulce et decorum est
      Pro patria mori.
AND yours did not even die for their motherland.

The Battle of Passchendaele was 100 years ago today. May all who lost their lives on both sides of the battle Rest In Peace.

+Maceta There's no doubt (at least for me) that Paschendale and Dance Of Death are by far the best songs on Dance Of Death. I personally prefer Paschendale over Dance Of Death (maybe it's because for me it's just 1h driving and I'm standing at the place where the battle was fought) I have been there countless times already, it's such a quiet place, it's almost unimaginable what happened there more than 100 years ago.
