"rust your bullets with his tears" may be one of, if not the greatest anti-war lyrics I've ever heard.
You take away the great vocals, the great bass, the great drumming, the great guitarists, the great songwriting, the great performances, and the greatest show on earth and there's not much left to Iron Maiden. Yep take those things away and Maiden Is just like any other band.
yep.
You'd have Nickelback
Up the Irons!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The beginning drum taps are actually “SOS” being played over and over. Sabaton did a song about this battle as well called “The Price of a Mile”.
Hmm. Don't think it's SOS. Common SOS is DOT DOT DOT... DASH DASH DASH... DOT DOT DOT. He's playing something like DOT DOT DOT DASH...DASH DASH DASH... DOT DOT DOT DOT, then drops the last two dots on the second phrase (depending on how you choose to break up the rhythm.) "Price of a Mile," though... good song! These tracks that focus less on the glory of battle and more on the devastation are always very effecting. "Unbreakable" is moving as well.
Andrew Ludwig every song about war etc. has this comment about the drum beat meaning SOS.
thomas skeffington Adrian Smith himself said that it was his idea to add the beginning cymbal taps as SOS - I was just mentioning what I read, I didn’t make it up. Why would I? No good reason to.
@@andrewludwig9251 Oh, I'm not accusing you of making up anything. I never said you were intentionally lying, and I don't think you are. And you probably did read that exact interview. I'm just saying that whatever Nicko ended up playing isn't SOS. Check out the charts if you'd like (maybe it's German Gerke code or something?) When you posted the comment, I thought you might be right, so I went back and gave a closer listen. I don't know; maybe when they were recording they decided the SOS code wasn't musical enough and changed it up. I suppose it is, at least, a similar pattern. I do think it was meant to resemble Morse, and it was highly important in WW1.
Anyway, just exploring the song composition. Not looking to attack you. Sorry if it came off like that.
The drum taps throughout the song are actually supposed to mimic the background gunfire that can be heard in battlefields.
Any night that has a Iron Maiden reaction is a great night.
Totally agree! !!
Not many people will say this but the guitar solos in this song are so damn good. All 3 of them.
Well, that is an easy thing if you have three master guitar players in your band. Up the Irons forever.
Up there with their best solos!
R.I.P to your son. I can't imagine the never ending pain his loss has causes you both. God bless you both.
This is tied for my favorite Maiden song. A 10 way tie
Amor odio Amor How can a person have a favorite Maiden song. Mine are all tied for #1.
It's got to be one of my top ten Maiden songs too.
@@Chris_Clark1MaidenFan He didn't, he said he had 10 favourites. You have every Maiden song as a favourite?
Lantern Jaw just about it. I can’t name my favorite. Alexander the Great, Hallowed Be Thy Name, The Prisoner, The Number of the Beast, If Eternity Should Fail, Die With Your Boots On, Can I Play With Madness, Aces High, Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Seventh Son, Powerslave, I mean how can you pick a favorite?
Sounds like you have about a 12 way tie.
Paschendale battle was the example of one of pointless battles in a modern times. 750k people lost their lives (many of them drowned in mud) in battle which didnt have any valuable strategic points - it moved frontline for few miles and area was lost anyway year later.
andrzej lapczynski it was intended to be a diversion / push attack to draw troops and supply’s away from a planned push up the Belgian coast from Newport to retake Oostende and Zeebrugger along with a naval landing (that would have included tanks) but the attack at Passhandale didn’t make its intended objectives. And the main thrust up the coast was cancelled.
My granddad (a Sargent with the Royal Anglian Regiment ) fought at Pachendale he said it was a bloody mess from start to finish as was the whole WW1
It probably would have been better if the Brits hadn't done their traditional artillery bombardment beforehand. Passchendaele was pretty dry and level before the battle, but a Dutch soldier warned senior British officers that an artillery barrage would destroy the polders (levees) and flood the ground, turning the whole place into a clinging, muddy morass.
So it was written. So it was.
The response was pretty much, "But we _always_ start offensives with an artillery barrage.!"
I am a Brit, and I'm proud of what my country's youth did for us in 1914-1918, and I don't buy the generalised "lions led by donkeys" trope, but this was a military fuck-up, rich and royal.
I'm also a time-served Maiden fanatic for 39 years, ever since I saw them on the Killers tour in 1981> This isn't the first or doubtless the last time that Maiden have dragged a tear from me.
Hello this is the UA-cam police. Proceed. You are protected by the metal gods Iron Maiden.
I agree with you about the history lessons in Iron Maiden’s music... Truly amazingly talented people who are able to not only teach, but they make you feel the emotions of the events and also rock you out at the same time!!!
My great great grandfather was KIA in the Battle of Passchendaele, during a smaller engagement at the Battle of Langemarck on 17th August 1917.
56 British, Canadian, Australian, New Zealand, Irish and French divisions attacked the German lines hoping to break their supply lines, the Battle of Passchendaele was more like an operation during the war rather than a single battle (it took place for most of the second half of 1917). Approximately 80 German divisions managed to hold off the allied attacks, but could not counter-attack effectively due to the devastation the attacks had created (far too much debris/mud/barbed wire/corpses littered everywhere).Deaths on both sides totalled almost 600,000 in only just over 3 months of fighting.
Hellooooo!!!! I have been waiting for YOU to react to this MASTERPIECE and just before going to bed... Bingooooo!!!!!! Thanx.
"In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields."
My Dad was a veteran of world war 2 and a proud member of the British Legion until the day he died at 90 years old. My gradfather was one of the lucky survivors of world war 1, having been invalided out after suffering from a poison gas attack at the age of 17, which affected him for the rest of his life. So this song affects me on a deep emotional level and your very respectful reaction is very much appreciated. I will be watching this video again on remebrance day here in the UK. November 11th.
Powerful song, everytime I listeng to this song always make me sad, I really feel the desperation of those soldiers that want to come back home. War sucks.
#IronMaiden The Longest Day, you have to hear that! :-) Another great war-related song, not so dark as Paschendale.
I agree
Listen on June 6
@@seelenwinter6662 well, I do not know if it is true, what you say, but even if it was, I do not see how it is related to the D-Day :-) There were soldiers from multiple nations, not just USA.
Seelenwinter 666 you’re so clueless. If it wasn’t for America, the entire world would be taking each other over. More wars would happen. When the Russians and Americans defeated Germany in 1945, we kept Russia from taking Germany over. We kept North Korea from taking South Korea over. America doesn’t start wars simply because we want to kill everyone. That it the most ignorant statement I ever heard! You’re extremely uneducated on anything America
Kateřina Konečná he/she is extremely wrong about the statement about America.
It's a good song, but the title track "Dance of Death" is easily my favorite from this album. It is my favorite post-2000 Maiden song. There is a great live version from En Vivo! that you could react to, if you wanted.
Maybe my favorite song by them.
I couldnt agree more.
Brave New World and then Dance of Death are their 2 best albums since Bruce and Adrian re-joined the band i.m.o. .. the title track 'Dance Of Death' is an AMAZING song!
The ENTIRE 'Brave New World' album is great from start to finish, including the title track as well .. as is the professionally shot live show that followed in Rio 2001.
#MaidenRules
I learnt more history from maiden than in school...
Thank you for reacting to this. It is such a powerful song. God bless our veterans!
I also recommend Motörhead’s song “1916”.
Similar theme. Quite moving.
Love sent. Ty for sending it here. It was needed.
Always Iron Maiden my band, always will be the best provider of songs to react to. 👍👍❤️❤️
Underrated album!
One of my favourite Maiden albums, but so many don't rate it!
@@jimharris367 Same! It is sooo good
I REALLY enjoy your reactions. You guys are so genuine. I appreciate you sharing your journey
Great perspective... Thanks for making us think.
Those taken down song reactions are all from the newest album and latest tour, I think you'll be fine with the older clips. I see lots of Maiden reactions on other channels stay up.
_I suggest you pause a couple of times during the video, just for a few seconds, make a quick comment, then continue. Seems to work for the copyright bots._ ...Rock on *\m/* Chur.
yeah, and go back 3 sec afta
A true reaction video.Kels furrowed brow as she read the lyrics,a truly heartfelt expression. The Maiden never fails .UP THE IRONS
Thanks for playing this and thanks to all my comrades for serving. Semper Fi!
Such a great channel with great energy. And you are so great together! Up the irons!
A great sad story. The song is tremendously powerful and I can only thank you for doing this. This is a metal song that reduces me to tears.
Love this song, absolutely love Iron Maiden.
I just discovered you guys. Love what you do, and happy you’ve discovered Maiden. They are truly a major part of my soul! Rock on!
Thank you @Robert Kerr! We so appreciate you sharing that with us. We will return soon after Kel’s book is finished, KnR.
Masterpiece.
How can anyone not love Maiden?
Bieber fans.
@@hugolafhugolaf 🤣 Thx, made my day... 😉
My first cd ever was from Iron Maiden, A Real Dead One. They tell it how it is and I admire that quality. I served in the US Navy as did my wife and I really appreciate your sharing a very heartfelt song and lyrics for those who may not understand what life in the military can be like.
Rich, sincere condolences on the loss of your son Sir, you have my sympathies. You are fortunate to have Kel, who seems like a super cool lady to be with. Rock on.
hi, i have watched this vid numerous times and this time it hit me hard the absolute pain you both feel listening to the lyrics{ for obvious reasons} someday may your hearts heal
Hope you enjoy the legacy of the beast tour. Have a great show and UP THE IRONS from Portugal
Is a very sad lyrics... the most sad is that was true life facts to many kids (americans, germans, french...) 😑😑😑
One of the facts that I love the most in Iron Maiden, is that they are more story tellers than a metal band.
Greetings from Medellín-Colombia ❤️❤️ great channel for yor son Jared.
I get chills when I listen to this song. So emotional.
Those solos back-to-back always gets my so hyped! Dave Murray & Adrians Smith are just perfection on twin guitar ;)
You guys live in Florida. The company I worked for had a training facility in Boca Raton, or as I call it, the southernmost point of NY. I went every couple of years for training. It always seemed to be summer when they sent me and it was humid as hell.
When Adrian Smith rejoined the group, they decided to keep his replacement, Janick Gers, and go with three guitars. Their sound became more progressive after that. Excellent choice for Memorial Day.
William Bevins Nicko McBrain lives in Boca Raton.
great song, but a sad story! i am from FLANDERS, Belgium, where we had a very rough time in the 1st and 2nd world war, with the battle of Paschendale and the battle of the Bulge (Ardennes). As i big iron maiden fan i would like to thank all the British, Canadian and American soldiers that have given us back our Freedom. Belgium and Flanders are iternaly greatfull for your efforts! In Flanders Fields, where popies grow! Up the irons! Maiden rules!
Love this song!!!
I'm so sorry for your loss! We lost my nephew to epilepsy a couple of months ago... God bless ya!
Now that you listened to this, y'all have to listen to The Longest Day by Iron Maiden. Its about D-Day. The imagery makes you feel like you are actually there.
and the americans have nothing better to do, than to vote the next blond german with blue eyes as president with the hand on the red button... and one thing is for sure: america was, is and will be very racist state and they didnt fight for europe, for the jewish or what ever else... they only had the fear, that the US are the next on adolfs list... all other is only a good PR from the US army... like santa claus it was from coca cola..
Goosebumps from this song, EVERY time. A beautiful, poignant song about a senseless slaughter in a brutal, ugly war. Written mostly by Adrian Smith, one of the lead guitarists in Maiden.
An epic song....
Really special song. Glad they tell the story.
Almost quarter of a million Brits died at Passchendaele (correct spelling). Another great history lesson from Iron Maiden!
@Kel-n-Rich thank you for doing the research behind the song, as a person from West-Flanders I really appreciate this, if you want to address ptsd for soldiers Sabatons to hell and back is a very good one. it's about the most decorated US soldier from WWII Audie Murphy
Lots of maiden albums contain history lessons regarding actual events. I've followed this band for over 35 years now years and never tire of listening to them.
Love the whole album, probably my favorite of more recent maiden music for sure!
Oooh i haven't watched the video yet but ik It's going to be awesome. I luv passchendaele
*I died in hell - they called it Passchendaele.*
Love how kel not only listens, she FEELS. that is the essence of maiden UP THE IRONS 🤘🤘🤘🤘
Hello Kel N Rich. I'd just like you to know that I have ALL sorts of problems for many years. And you two have been instrumental (excuse the pun) in making me feel emotion again. Thank You.
Hey @andrew cummerson. We hear you and we feel you. Love puns BTW.... We love the journey you are on an feel honored to be a part of that. Please stay in touch. Email us if you want. Richgafter@gmail.com. Big love from Kel-n-I.
Despite the sad reality lyrics the way they express it is amazing. Its very theatrical, its like a movie, you can really see the story running in your mind.
A great song about A sad subject. As A member of A gold star family we must remember freedom isn't free.
just found this video, so sorry about your son, lost a child as well, prayers for you guys
#IronMaiden The Wicker Man
If you havent, listen to the us promo version, much better imo
My favorite song from Iron Maiden. I think that this is their most epic and emotionally charged song.
This song is a VERY SPECIAL song to me, my Great Grandad died in the battle of Paschendale, my mum's Grandad, she named me after him, Christopher Baker he's buried at the Oxford Road cemetery in Belgium near Ypres., Just so you know 325000 allied troops and 260000 German troops died in the "battle"
Enjoy the July show in Sunrise Fl. Check out the set list and you will see that the songs are group by subject such as war and religion. The legacy of the beast tour is a retrospective show off many old songs from the 80s and 90s. A Maiden show is a mind blowing experience
Crazy that 8 years on this can still tear me up. That humans can be broken as to do this to each-other.
This song gets me in the feels every time. No matter how many times I hear it. The chorus encapsulates the universal feeling all combat soldiers have, no matter their race, religion, culture, or time.
Thank you for this. I've been waiting a long time for you to react to my favorite of the reunion era. Not sure if you waited to do it on Memorial Day but if you did, kudos to you because this song is the perfect representation of what Memorial Day is really all about. Remember that their IS beauty in darkness. It's just that most of us are conditioned not to seek it out. This is a perfect example. A somber reminder of what can be built out of the ashes of tragedy.
Masterpiece.....absolute masterpiece.
Goosebumps! Epic !
Only the good... My heart goes out to you. Stay strong!
Oh wow, i'm sad to hear about your son. I am glad that you both have found something to help you through this difficult time.
None of us really understand the true horror of war as it was in the trenches in WW1. You can look online at the pictures of before and after of the town of Paschendale and it is horrific. Thank you all the Veterans who have served and gave all for our freedoms. Thank you Kel-n-Rich for a great reaction. God Bless.
I have been reading about this conquest. It actually occured without American involvement in Belgium.
The Battle of Paschendale was actually several battles but is mostly recounted as starting with the 3rd beginning the last day of July, 1917 and lasting into November. Three days in torrent rains bogged down the entire area, tanks became immoble and soldiers drown. It was the worst season in Belgium for rain in a generation. Surviviing units could not move and were often prone, defenseless to opposing troops.
At least a half a million died on both sides during this stretch and estimates go from there to 850 thousand. Years later even the British Prime Minister stated no thinking soldier can continue to apologize for it. It's brainchild, British General Haig, was haunted by it in his legacy. He endeavored to the siege because he was feeling large after taking a crucial bridge but hence has been deemed the worst general of The Great War. The only reason Britain agreed to the Haig plan was that they didn't know what else to do.
So people just died in a battle of attrition at a rate of 2100 per day for freaking months. This was easily the most brutal and dire extended episode of World War I.
Sorry to go rogue on the channel. Really appreciate you reacting to this song. You did a good job.
Brilliant brilliant brilliant
So sorry for your loss man
This is one of many Iron Maiden songs that make me wish that schools would combine history and music classes for a joint lesson.
Very few could teach either subject as well, or as memorably, as the Irons.
Hey guys! I'm new here in your channel, thanks for react my favorite Iron Maiden song! How was the concert by the way? I saw them in Sweden last year! Please more reactions of Iron Maiden and Megadeth.
All the best
Cheers from Europe
Dear Kel and Rich, a beautiful reaction to a great song. You should definitely react to either "The longest Day" or "The Legacy" by Maiden. One is talking about the d-day landings on Normandie beach, a story thats garanteed to give you goosebumbs, the other talks about the idea of war, how many leaders etc. almost want's it to happen, while not thinking about those who participate. Keep up the good reaction work, some of the best on UA-cam.
Omg sorry about your son. I appreciate what you do.
Killer reaction to a killer tune!
Yes!!!! Wooooooo!
For somber Memorial Day, Battle of Passchendaele, battle went from July 1917 to November 1917 near the village of Passchendaele, Belgium. Both sides' losses are from 200,000 to 400,000 in 3 month period.
Find a live version of this great song it's amazing to see live
it's epic
Death on the road dvd
When you listen to Iron Maiden, especially the longer songs like Alexander the Great, Paschendale, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Seventh Son etc, it's like reading a story whereby the music takes you right into the thick of it and you feel part of it. That to me is the definition of musical greatness, this band do it time and again, effortlessly. It's just a shame that despite we the people knowing that war is futile, governments and politicians worldwide have yet to heed the message.
Iron Maiden - Powerslave!!
The only way to listen to this song is in stunned silence. Such a sad/epic song. RIP to those who died on those battle fields so long ago.
Do the ghost of the navigator by Iron Maiden, thanks.
I know you can't show it but I would recommend watching the live version from Death on the Road. It drives home the point and emotion of this song even more. Definitely worth a look if you really like this track.
Masterpiece

It's unbelievable how consistent Iron Maiden have been through the decades, a night with them is always a good night.
Our freedom has not, and will not, come for free! To all we've lost in war, and to all those who have lost themselves in war, to protect our freedom. Thank you all!!
The vast amount of war isn't for the fight to remain free but the extortion of the less fortunate.
Amazing to me that these men came back and were so many damaged but they all hid it ...didn't talk about it...buried it....they were different back then
There is no honour in war. The onslaught of wholesale, indiscriminate murder honours no one. Life is sacred and should be upheld with the highest of honours. The bringing of life into this world is very hard and very rare. But, the taking of life is so simple, for it has no respect for the bringing of life into this world. It is for this reason womanhood is respected, the bears of life.
When will we a a species learn to set aside our differences, or arguments, an anger and work towards the common good of all? Iron Maiden just gave us a hard cold slap of reality, member the lost of life in hopes of never repeat the same mistake again.
Yes they did. We must step it up, as you say. Agreed. Rich
Well said 🤘
A good song, but I do not agree with you. There can be individual honour in war where someone refuses to go beyond a certain point, where someone knows and does what is morally right. There are countless examples, and you dishonour them with trite generalisations.
On the contrary, it is simplicity itself to begat a life, and the bringing of life into this world, rather than rare, is as common as grains of sand on a beach. Go ask the Chinese - if you dare travel there.
I know a fair amount about the first world war battles, and others, from Kadesh to Mount Pleasant, as do millions of others, so I have no idea why you think IM gave us all a hard, cold, slap of reality with this song. What were you thinking? That Paschendale was lads picnic until IM informed you otherwise with this song? I always knew about the terrible British, Canadian and German casualties at Paschendale. I also know about Verdun. No cold, hard, slap of reality needed.
Wars on that scale will never be fought again; there is not the industry to support it anymore. There is no common good, apart from ridding ourselves of a certain virus from China.
Hey guys! You should check out Tremonti it is a band formed by Mark Tremonti AKA the amazing guitarist of Alter Bridge. Try this song off his newest concept record “Bringer Of War” enjoy!

A great 60s band....oh yes Family, Coliseum!
I want to suggest a couple of songs. Sabaton's "The Price of a Mile" is also about Passchendale. That and this song both inevitably bring me to tears, every time. My great-great-grandfather was injured by a Mustard Gas shell at Passchendale. I never actually met him, but there's a bit of a connection there for me.
I'd also like to suggest Iron Maiden's "Afraid to Shoot Strangers". The lyrics aren't long, but they talk about both the horror, and the necessity of war, and why wars have to be fought. I don't want to spoil the lyrics, but I think you'll find them meaningful.
Just a thought. The 75th anniversary of D day is approaching. Check out the longest day. Another fantastic Maiden track
One of their best songs. Definitely means something special as a Canadian for sure. Sadly the one tour they were doing it occasionally but they swapped it for Wrathchild for the show I went to. While a fun song and such, it doesn't hold a candle to the other unfortunately so was a bit disappointed since they had just played it the night or two before in Texas. I heard due to some technical issues but also learned wrathchild is a rest song somewhat for them which also irked me a bit but is what it is. Still a great show of course and the song is still excellent just would have be nice to seen live. Sadly the other three times ive been lucky enough to see it wasn't on the setlist(they were doing several songs from their 2000 to 2008 or so Era on that tour hence its inclusion). Two of the shows had plenty of other surprises like them reprising their live after death tour set list with classics like rime and such so still very happy fan to see those.
