Thought this was a weird focal length, but I remembered that I used to shoot with the Canon 24-105L all the time on my crop-sensor bodies and actually really loved the range, which roughly equates to this on full-frame, so this actually makes a lot of sense. Really interesting and unique lens!

@@ChrisChenAdventures Sorry for the delayed reply. It really depends on the environments you usually shooting in. For me after looking at the data in LRC I actually crop the 24mm-35mm to 35mm+ 95% so it make sense for me to start at 35mm (using Sigma 16-35mm f/2.8 1~2% now). 35mm-70mm without changing lens in any event is priceless let alone that is f/2.0-f/2.8 with APS-C crop factor to play with. One stop in low light is ISO 6400 vs ISO 3200 to me and the less I need to use the de-noise in LRC the faster turn around time for me.
As the maximum focal length in APS-C mode is 225mm, my minimum shutter for people event speed is usually set at 1/250s as focus & sharpness is not something I would like to compromise in my images. High ISO can be de-noised by software quickly but not focus and sharpness.
You really can't fault Tamron for only making this lens in Sony mount. The market for L-mount is very small, and both Nikon and Canon have kept their mirrorless lens systems closed. Otherwise, thank you for the great review! I have been planning on getting a set of primes for my pre-ordered A7IV, but this lens is tempting . . .
The EF and F mounts have been closed, too, yet Sigma and Tamron gained traction by reverse-engineering those and offering lenses for these closed mounts.
I hate that canon does this. This lens would crush on the RF mount. I swear, it makes me want to switch to Sony sometimes, just for all the 3rd party lens options. The RF to EF adapter works great, but it’s one extra thing you need, AND it takes the weight of lenses and pushes it further away from the camera, throwing the balance off. I have the Tamron 24-70 G2, and I LOVE it. But I hate how heavy it feels after awhile cause of adapter.
@@MindYaBizz_Whiz I actually switched from Canon to Sony last week because of the more open mount system. No regrets. I support open standards with my money.
I hope Tamron continues to do lenses like this with focal lengths no one else is doing at low apertures. I know it would be huge but a 24-55mm f2 would be awesome
I fully agree that it is actually getting good. When you have minimum lens flare it just produces distracting smudges of color. However, this amount of lens flare is just artistic and just looks cool!
All in guys! I have a 24-70 2.8 Sigma and 100-400 Sony and this just feels like it is the perfect one in between those two. It could also be the new 70-200 but I like the money savings here and I don’t know if I need reach all the way to 200 with also having the 100-400. This feels like it could do a ton like Chris said in portraits or travel.
One possible aid to reducing lens flare with that lens would be to replace the hood with a foldable rubber hood or better, a bellows hood, if you don't mind the added weight and size.
This comes at a time when I am looking for an addition to my kit lens on the throwback Sony a7r, my first full-frame that I just purchased. I was looking at the Sony G lens, 20mm F1.8, but this is quite tempting since I like the versatility plus the presumed (I haven't checked price yet) cost difference between it and the G/GM lenses. Thanks for the as-usual thoughtful video, guys! EDIT: Oh, $1899. Hmmmm. The fact that I'm maybe semi-pro at best brings on some hesitation when I see that price tag. ....1st-world problems.
When I used to travel a lot I found a Canon 10-22 and 24-105 on APS-C could pretty much handle everything, with the only issue being a change over point at a fairly common focal length. On FF I found the 24-105 neither wide enough nor long enough, which meant travelling with three lenses, which was a PITA. I also tried going with just a 16-35 and 70-300 but that meant constant lens changes which annoyed my travelling partner. This paired with a 16-35 might be a really good high quality two lens travel combo.
@@000Kuj That’s a constant F/4. I’d want a 2-2.8 or a constant 2.8. That’s what makes it unique. Tamrons 17-70 kind of fills that niche if you’re on Sony APS-C. I’m a Fuji shooter myself. But same deal on our side of things, we have the constant 2.8 on the 16-55, and the 16-80 F/4.
I enjoy your reviews but I wished you did a video review on the lenses like you do the cameras. For example the tamron 11-20 seems to be be really solid lens with great AF for photos but I've been reading that the continuous AF struggles in the video. It would be nice to see that added for your reviews.
The newer Sony GM primes are an exception! I have the 135 1.8 GM and I can shoot directly into the sun with no flares. I tested the 50mm 1.2 GM and that lens is also incredibly flare resistant. My 24mm 1.4 GM has a little bit of flaring, but not nearly as distracting as the terrible flaring I get out of my 55mm 1.8 Zeiss. Lens coatings are pretty amazing these days.
In the car world there's a common phrase that "there are no more bad cars" cause even the cheapest econoboxes you can buy today are truly world's better than the average cars of the 70s-80s. Lenses really feel that way right now, especially with how much better zooms have gotten.
It’s a bit sus that as soon as the AI on smartphones became really good, all of a sudden the big lens manufacturers discovered a way to make high quality glass much cheaper and smaller 🤷♂
are you guys planning to do a review of the Tamron 18-300 f3.5-6.3 for Fujifilm? This lens seems interesting (even though it is slower aperture, it might be the perfect travel lens for fuji users)
Oh my God I was thinking the same thing before you said "it's so bad it's almost good" with the lens flare. I image J.J Abrams would love not having to add all that lens flare in post.
As one lens shooter, who uses 24-70mm equivalent and usually only 35-70 area and always hoping the lens to be longer, this lens seems really good. But this lens costs about the same as 28-75 and 70-180 2.8 tamrons combined. That's the biggest problem in my opinion. With the other two sure changing lenses sucks if you are in a hurry but they also give 28-35 and 150-180 which this lens does not give. Also nice if ever an expensive lens would break you don't lose all your lenses. I wonder what is the widest f-stop this gives at 70-75mm. Some test photos seemed to be at f2.5 which is slightly better for lowlight than the other tamron zooms
Did you mention image stabilization? Does it have it, like Sigma and Sony? I tend to use my 24-105 Sony g-master a lot because of the range and stabilization, but miss the F2.8. Great review as always.
Guys, great review as always. From now on you should always use the Ronin 4D for your reviews. The difference to the S1H is tremendous and Jordan really seems to know how to make the best use from the 4D.
I want this lens in am APS-C mount. A 50-225 range would be amazing! I guess you could still mount it to an a6xxx body, but being full frame glass means it's a bit huge for that.
@@TheWillRogers Still a poor balance, the apsc bodies are 3rd of the weight of this lens! I have the Sony 24-105 f4 and with its 660g it's the limit for a walk around lens.
@@networm64 That's kind of what I was asking for, but I may not have been clear. Something designed for aps-c sized sensors, but with the same zoom and aperture range. I think a zoom starting around a 50mm equivalent is a great idea. Normal to mid/long telephoto is kind of my jam. I use the old Nikkor 75-150 all the time, and I love the range.
From a sigma 24-70 art owner point of view, would you consider the purchase of the tamron 70-180 to complete the standard focals or would you go for the tam 35-150 instead? The choise has to be seen from the perspective of a travel photographer in love with enviromental portraits and street/wild shooting.
This seems like an awkward lens at 35-150, but consider how many times you shoot within this range? This lens is becoming attractive the more I see reviews like yours. Tamron and Sigma have really picked up their game with nothing short of excellent lens that compete with the first party lens. And their prices are better.
Hi Chris, great review on the new & impressive Tamron lens. I could not help but notice your camera shoulder bag. Who makes this camera bag & can you please tell me the particular name of the bag? Thank you. Love your DP reviews & content that you provide.
@@JJ-vp3bd A7RV with the Tamron 35 150 and other lenses. I had problems on the Nikon with the ETZ21 adapter, as it drowned my camera battery completely even when it was truned off. Also, as a wedding shooter I didn't want to relay on a china adapter. The A7RV is awesome. Definitely was the right choice to switch to Sony.
I found this lens to have a major focussing flaw.. back focus when shooting moving objects in low light situations. I shoot dance competitions and when the dancers are near the audience the focus finds the audience faces and goes from the dancers. Using lock on tracking wide with sticky 0 and it still jumps on my A9 with v6 update. A firmware update needed for sure!
I'm watching this in 2024 when we have it available for nikon z mount. Was looking for a review on a nikon z but couldn't find it in this channel. Would it be fair to consider the same conclusions but for a nikon mount? I was planning to buy a nikkor z 24-70 f2.8s but seeing the tamron with similar quality, more zoom (although less wide angle) and cheaper prices is making me think more. My photography objects for the lens would be mainly landscapes, cars and trains. For birds I'd have the z 180-600 so having the 35-150 would cover the gap between lenses more. So, is the Tamron equally as good with a z mount?
Thanks for that review! I've just got into photography/video and I wondered whether you might give me some advice... I own a A6600 (so, APS-C) and two lenses: the kit lens Sony 18-135 mm (f 3.5-5.6) and the Sigma 16mm f1.4. I'd like a zoom lens with wide aperture (one thing I'd like to do is to take pictures of my kid playing basketball, typically is poorly lit sports halls). I'm hesitating between two options for a zoom lens: the Tamron 35-150mm and the Tamron 70-180mm. The latter is cheaper, lighter, would work with the 67mm ring size filters I already have, and I wouldn't loose on the wide aperture when zooming since I think that the 35-150mm quickly moves from 2 to 2.8 when zooming, and the 70-180mm has got a little more range, so it seems a good option. Do you think 2.8 would work well for fast indoor sports? I saw someone in the comments mention the possibility of a Tarmron 70-200 in the future... Should I hold on a little for a better alternative?
5:55, yes, people who always critique my "lens swaping skills". You see, it's not me nor my technique. They got dust in their body as well! Albeit it was just a focus breathing test clip so you're ok leaving it there. But imagine it being an important shot? This IS a problem with mirrorless bodies. I definitely want to see Nikon doing somethin about it since besides Z9 they're the only last companiy that has no measures in this area. Z6/Z7's next gen with some form of sensor protecting technologies would make those my end game camera for sure.

Some test photos seemed to be at f2.5 which is slightly better for lowlight than the other tamron zooms
f2 from 35 to 39,
f2.2 from 40 to 60,
f2.5 from 61 to 84,
f2.8 from 85
I LOVE THE LENSFLAIRS !!!
0:07 the dude in the background turning around lmao
Did you mention image stabilization? Does it have it, like Sigma and Sony? I tend to use my 24-105 Sony g-master a lot because of the range and stabilization, but miss the F2.8.
Great review as always.
This is an event photographers dream.
Already excited about your best and worst gear of the year. Coming up soon
Guys, great review as always. From now on you should always use the Ronin 4D for your reviews. The difference to the S1H is tremendous and Jordan really seems to know how to make the best use from the 4D.
Sadly, it's been sent back to DJI.But I cherished my time with it...
@@thatjordandrake That‘s a bummer. Do you consider buying one?
Nice review. Straight to the point
Interesting lens, I hope they make this for the Canon RF mount.
Good review guys! this one would be nice as a RF lens to use for sports, concerts and events. 👍
Now Tamron needs to join the L-mount team and bring this bad boy!
I want this lens in am APS-C mount. A 50-225 range would be amazing! I guess you could still mount it to an a6xxx body, but being full frame glass means it's a bit huge for that.
Want this in fuji mount. This on an apsc body is a killer combo.
Man that would be damn front heavy! Why not asking for dedicated to apsc equivalent 24-105 f2-2.8? My dream lens if ever existed!
@@networm64 Just use your hand that you're using to zoom to support the front of the lens.
Didn’t realize J.J. Abrams was a consultant for Tamron.
Came here for the J.J. Abrams comments. Was not disappointed.
Please bring back the anamorph... Loved it so much!!!
I'm cracking them out again this week!
quality shooting and colors with today video with dji camera awsome better than S1H :D nice video
8:15 that rolling shutter
Nice work guys.
There is also this saying;
Chris is THE master of backward-walking!
Hi, thanks for review! Will be ok for indoors sports?
Hi Chris, great review on the new & impressive Tamron lens. I could not help but notice your camera shoulder bag. Who makes this camera bag & can you please tell me the particular name of the bag? Thank you. Love your DP reviews & content that you provide.
Thanks! It's from Wotancraft. One of their Pilot series. I really, really like it
@@niccollsvideo Thanks for your reply on your wotancraft pilot camera bag. I have a wontancraft ryker bag & love it!
Ah! clean your sensor, so much dust was visible during the Focus breathing test!
That's the Sony special
7:13 new haircut Chris!
I have the 35-150 2.8-4 for nikon. It's my favorite lens i own
Testet the lens with the megadap etz21 on the Z7 and z6ii and I have to say it works flawless so far .
any updates
@@JJ-vp3bd switched to Sony 😄
which camera/ lens @@mickue
@@JJ-vp3bd A7RV with the Tamron 35 150 and other lenses. I had problems on the Nikon with the ETZ21 adapter, as it drowned my camera battery completely even when it was truned off. Also, as a wedding shooter I didn't want to relay on a china adapter. The A7RV is awesome. Definitely was the right choice to switch to Sony.
is that a really good lens? Tamron 35 150@@mickue
8:15 Damn, look at that rolling shutter... geez
Try shooting a moving subject and zooming at the same time... tell me what you think then. I've been having problems with my lens.
This would be great coupled with the 150-500mm to cover everything except astro. Though with f2-2.8, you could do some astro too.
Man I wish they would also make the budget 2.8-4 again for us mere mortals
Just realized that Jordan is quite the model.
That thing is fire. 🔥🔥🔥
Great review!!!
Man, if I didn't already have the 24-105 f4, I'd jump on this. I might still.
I just picked up a 24-105 for a work lens like 6 months ago...may need to do a trade up. But the stabilization is great for handheld video.
Anyone else noticed Chris got a haircut between the start and the end of the video ? :D
The DJI stab is great. 👍
I love your reviews
I found this lens to have a major focussing flaw.. back focus when shooting moving objects in low light situations. I shoot dance competitions and when the dancers are near the audience the focus finds the audience faces and goes from the dancers. Using lock on tracking wide with sticky 0 and it still jumps on my A9 with v6 update. A firmware update needed for sure!
any updates on this
this DJ Ronin is amazing....
Would this be a good combo with the FX6? Or too heavy?
Can you do tamron 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3 di iii-a vc rxd lens for fujifilm ?
Nice review. But i'm worried about your sensor.. Take a look at 6:08... :)
That intro though!😂
Thanks for the great review. Is there a filter that can greatly reduce the sun flare?
More useful than the rf 28-70/2 but for $1200 less. Just need it in RF and Z mounts
And weighs 300g less and has much less focus breathing.
A zoom lens with a constant f/2 aperture is no easy feat, though.
@@DiminishingAugmentation just because it is difficult or “a first”, doesn’t make it worth it or the best option.
Very impressive lens. Prime lens sets killer ;-).
