Hey guys!!!! Because you asked for it, you get it!!!! Full Marty Friedman/Megadeth Architecture of Aggression (Countdown to Extinction) guitar solo lesson!
In this video, Uncle Ben Eller here will break down this awesome solo lick by lick, along with some technical tips that will help you understand what make's marty's playing tick!!!
Gear:
Suhr Modern Satin
Fractal Audio Axe FX 3, running a slightly tweaked version of @RoccoPezzin 's Mesa Rec!
What classic MartyDeth solo should we learn next?
This is one of the most under-rated Megadeth songs in the catalog and one of my all time favorites. Do 'Go To Hell' next.
Go to hell is a killer track 🤘🏽
I’m in the midst of learning ‘Go To Hell’ and ‘Sweating Bullets’. I just need to get those solos up to speed.
ua-cam.com/video/i75mZYGbsak/v-deo.html
Goto to hell is great!
Go To Hell. I never hear anyone talk about this one. By far my favorite of theirs since seeing it in Bogus Journey, and immediately asking for the sountrack, when I was like 10. That Faith No More song (Perfect Crime) os killer too. Also, Tommy the Cat from Primus. Actually the whole soundtrack is pretty awesome lol
Marty is pretty much untouchable in all his contributions in Megadeth. Thanks for the breakdown.
Well, yes and no. Chris Broderick is no slouch by any means and Kiko is a jedi but yes, Marty is Marty and I think he was the ultimate Megadeth fit.
Marty's solos were ahead of its time, I don't think even the 90s Shrapnel guitar hero guys could even match his intensity in this album, it's chaotic, dissonant, bluesy angry yet all of these notes fit together, stroke of genius
marty was a shrapnel guitar hero though...
You couldn’t have said it better and more eloquently.
Skin 'o my teeth has a sick ass marty solo. Has all the elements, crazy blues licks, weird chromatic nonsense, fast legato, giant bends, a key change, I love it. One of my favorites
The one in Family Tree is amazing too, like, how can you be so tasteful to do that bend?
A skin o my teeth tutorial would be amazing.
Skin o my teeth is my favourite opening track of any metal album... superb
That entire album is a fucking masterpiece imo. Tight af, just perfect from every angle.
Spot on. He goes from gear 1 to 6 in a period of time, ensuring he does all that makes Marty , Marty . So rock n roll, so punchy, so melodic, so rocky and metal , while those runs and the key change, BAM he gets in your psych each and every time.
Marty is just on a tier of his own in terms of that genius combination of shred and melodic ideas.
The bass breakdown transition to the solo makes it even more epic.
That is so badass! Love that shit
All the solos on Countdown are outstanding. This one, Foreclosure of a Dream, Skin O' My Teeth, Ashes in Your Mouth, Captive Honor.
Captive Honor might be my favorite. Such a nasty song.
Dude, YES! Killing Road solo is an absolute masterpiece. I've been raising my arm hairs on that one since 94. 🤘
The last solo in Victory is sorely overlooked.
Love that you're covering youthanasia / countdown era Marty solos!
Please consider doing high speed dirt next!!
Thanks again Uncle Ben. Savage and great as usual.
I like the way you "visualise" it, gives another dimension to the lesson, no one really explains that detail, that I've heard of, think ill give this a bash.
After a long break from the guitar I think I'll learn this solo. Thank You! Perfect timing for my life x
So glad you did this solo, the deeper cuts on cte are great
his phrasing is crazy good, but his "only him not choices" if that makes sense is soooo good
My favourite Marty solo, ashes in your mouth is amazing as well.
So I've finally built up the chops to play marty solos and I am reliving my fan days going back and learning them. Thanks for this content!
Thank you for making this video.
The lesson that we were all waiting for!
Thank you, uncle Ben! Great video!
You rock, Ben!
I could watch these videos about Marty again and again
Thanks! Your tone is really good too.
When i see megadeth and uncle Ben in the same sentence, it's a nice day 🤘
Finally! Thanks! Solo for Take no Prisoners and complete for Poison was the cure will be great!
Many guitarist today that blast thru scales with lightning speed and no feeling. I love the emotion felt and heard with bending. Bending is just so much more fun and heart felt.
good lesson, thanks
Thanks Uncle Ben!!
FUK yeah, Always wanted too live in "The Shire" Thanks Uncle Ben!!!!
Perfect timing! I’m learning “Angry Again” solo included and it’s my first attempt at learning a kick ass decently hard solo. I also just watched your “Phrygian” lesson & your “Holy Wars Acoustic Solo” lesson. I can’t wait to watch this when I get to my guitar 🤘🏾
Dude, no wayy,
I legit just started learning angry again solo,
Its definitely one of my first real attempts at a megadeth solo,
I think it'll definitely improve my lead playing heaps, well hopefully
Wishing you goodluck dude! :)
Countdown to Extinction is my favorite Megadeth album. This is their first album that I have.
Rude Awakening(Live) - She Wolf
This has always been my favorite Marty solo in Megadeth mostly because of that Legato run
Absolutely love the breakdown of the music and that Japanese migrant man’s of going about his musical chores ..🤟
I like things that are nice!
you should do an ashes in your mouth solo lesson or dave’s solo in holy wars lesson. Please!!!
Yes! Ashes is killer. Another epic Marty solo is the one from Lucretia.
I agree Countdown to Extinction and Youthanasia have some of my favourite Marty solos
Another great video Unca Ben. Great breakdown. It's amazing the way you can play so accurately at stepdad speed. My timing and phrasing go to shit when I try to do that.
Wow early af and ty for the lesson love Marty
Uncle Ben says... Really dig in and goose this thing!
In measure 5, beats 1-3 each descend one more note at the end of the beat: C♯-D♯-E-F♯-G♯-A-G♯-F♯-E, F♯ etc. (6 32nds, 32nd triplet) Also the note before that lick is a 1/2 step prebend from C natural. (Eventually the vibrato goes below C♯.)
Hey Ben...Do you have a .99 cent Patreon?...J/K Dude...Great lesson man!
Marty can make magic simply because he is THAT GOOD. He's a full blown virtuoso.
Ben, great video as typical.. Hey, you should do a video on intervallic playing and on a breakdown of Aaron Marshall! Keep up the great work.
I think I speak for more than a few of your subscribers when I say we all enjoy the John Stockton-esque nuthuggers you're wearing in this v video.
Instead of going over the Countdown solo's, it'd be nice to see a breakdown of some of Marty's lesser known tracks. FFF is an absolute doozy of a solo, and is criminally underrated!
Awesome lesson Ben! Do the take no prisoners solo next! Or the solo from Victory. Or edit: Hangar 18 solos if you're feeling fired up!
Hey Ben! Thank you again for another Marty Lesson. Have you heard his latest album? I love to see you cover it! Or even give your opinion. Echo & Time flies are my favorite.
Amazing lesson! You should do the good mourning/Black Friday solos next for Chris poland 🤘🏼
Uncle Ben maybe the next Megadeth song you should do is Lucretia. Marty and Dave both have killer solos on that one
Ben, you totally rule, man. I'd really like to see you as a lead guitarist in Megadeth.
There's a lot of "covers" of legendary solos on YT but only you can play on Marty's level or, what's even more important, above it.
@Megadeth please note this.
I'm impressed by how good you got the 8-string to sound on your intro.. Maybe I've been listening to too much Animals as Leaders, but most 8-string stuff sounds incomprehensible because it's played so fast with very small tonal range and bootloads of distortion to make it sound more eviler.. it just sounds like mushy peas to me! Good job, Uncle B! 👍
Can you do a Vortex solo lesson? That's one of Marty's most underrated solos imo.
Most people don't know this but one of the key factors that makes Marty's sound unique is his strange right hand. The flexed curvature is basically a modified form of the rare Gypsy Jazz style picking, which was invented to create a louder, more aggressive pick attack. He leverages a massive downward pickslant and uses circular thumb picking to get around the string change issue (for example when the pick is below the string and he needs to move to the string above). You can't reach as much consistent speed output with Gypsy style picking as you can with traditional picking but you get MUCH more power. Think of it like the difference between an AK47 and a metronome. AK47 shoots extra fast and clean in short bursts but then soon gets out of control if you keep shooting without rest, but the sound is dynamic and powerful while a metronome maintains consistent high speed, but the sound is rather weak and mechanical.
Hands down, Uncle Ben is the most coolest guy in the earth.
spiff as always
Here is my good ol buddy. Whole Step Ben.
Killing road is also my favourite, I can’t remember if you broke it down in to what relation the notes had with the chords etc, I will re watch now… that is always really interesting to try and understand his thought process.
I’d like to see/hear the solo to Megadeth’s Addicted to Chaos. Yeah, that’s the ticket!
Show us the gams Uncle Benny. Show them gams, and shred them jams! Woooo
What about Marty's solo in Captive honour (the ending solo) ;-) ?
"Looks like [leg] meat's back on the menu, boys!" -Ugluk
Marty actually stopped by my channel and left a comment on my "What's That Noise?!?" Vid we did. Very Cool of him
Hey Ben, how was that gathering of musicians at that retreat you posted on one of your recent videos last month in Tennessee ?
Something Woods Jam?
Marty is a guitar god that even Dave mustaine does not mess with
He is the only ex Megadeth Dave speaks highly of.
Marty is uniquely awesome.
Thats for the video man.
Loved it
Well I was going to request "Killing Road" but you've already done it! "Family tree" is another one from Youthanasia with a fantastic Marty solo. It's chock full of "Martyisms" 😅😂
Any chance of getting a video for playing the rest of the song???? :)
Uncle Ben, I and possibly others(?) would LOVE to learn Ozzy’s “No Bone Movies,” especially the rhythm, whose chords elude me (us?). Really cool rhythm song and of course, humorous subject matter.
“Toes on Marty’s Water.
And fire in the sky”
Countdown is my fave, then a tie between Youthanasia and Rust in Peace!
"It's not 'Architecture of Moistness".
I'm at lunch at work and almost spit my food out I LOL'D so hard.
Check the solos from Längtar bort från mitt hjarta by Shining, they're awesome
A hidden gem is Marty’s solo on the album Youthanasia, “The Killing Road.” It’s a long solo that sounds like an alternate take of the solo to “Symphony of Destruction” and even “Ashes in Your Mouth” because he establishes a quick melodic part before unleashing his flurry of smooth, exotic lines.
Ben has a video on that solo.
@@remnant24 Get the heck outta here! How did I not know this?! Thank you, and of course thanks to Ben.
@@douglaslaidlaw5961 he also mentioned Killing Road at the end of this video. It's his favorite Marty solo. One of my faves as well actually
Ya made me LOL with the "chromatic nonsense" comment! Ha ha ha ha! Love the vids #UncleBen \m| |m/
Dear Uncle Ben. We need a video that focus more on the hand-job (that also sound grooser than intended...) Marty is known for. This is a key factor to be able to nail his solo work. I try constantly to play with that awkward wrist bend + lazy downward picking and it actually makes much more sense when playing these solos.
The balls dangling between Marty's fingers on the first couple of notes are swollen to the max.
Uncle Ben,
I would urge you to try a breakdown of Friedman's solos like FFF, Vortex, Victory, etc...
Very Few Lessons or Covers on YT
👌
Stepdad speed FTW!
Angry Again solo?
meow at 0:23
Good catch
in "the hardest lick" is marty playing triplets playing notes on the 1 and 3 then adding the 2?
Tornado of Souls, I think you may have covered it already.
Mary jane's harmonic part
Pleaseeeeee
Clicked Faster than Last Time!!!!
Staccato
The 3 notes after legato
4:05 Sorry to be "that guy", but Marty tabs this lick at the 13th fret on the B string, hammer to 14 and presumably rolling the finger to get the 14 on E, etc. (Guitar School June 1996).
Although it's possible the magazine's editors transcribed the examples in his column for him. Your way seems easier, so forget I said anything.
megadave youthanasia. 🤘
All about that leg meat 🤘😆
*UNCLE BEN!*
HELLO!
Great Lesson & the zebra Revv is real Porn :)
Not too hard to play? Come on uncle Ben!
I wish Marty Friedman was my dad
Please help us get our toes into Marty's Water XD
Well i am more of a "Jazz Guy" But this solo is really nice , I even stole one idea from it.
Any anime fans out there check out Marty's edition of "Gurenge" from Demon Slayer!
Never clicked so fast in my life, and I'm stepdad age.
Turkey!!!
I am a fan prof uncle ben.. isn’t that actually uncle Bob ..
Two things...
Moar Legmeat!!!
And could you please point me in the direction of said Architect of moistness? My PHub account expired 🙁
