This may be the best way to improve your alternate picking!!! Most exercises focus on inside OR outside string changes only, but if you wanna become a picking machine like Paul Gilbert, you gotta practice it all! I'm Uncle Ben Eller, and on this episode of Weekend Wankshop, i'm gonna show you an alternate picking etude i wrote to get you SHREDDED in 2021!!!
Suhr Modern T
Suhr Woodshed compressor
Axe FX III
What technique should we dive into next?!
Thanks for learning the best alternate picking exercise i think i've ever come up with! Practice this on the daily, and i guarantee you'll be picking MORE BETTER!!! What technique do we need to tackle next?!
How to unlearn bad habits and reduce fretting tension
@@kennethnegy9467 i've got several videos on reducing tension, search "Ben Eller tension", i'm sure you'll find a few! Lemme know how they work for you!
Maybe some string skipping?
Maybe something with cross picking? Some of the inside picking on your buddy Andy Wood's forgotten secrets theme destroy me when I get it up to any kind of speed. I can handle inside picking on one string set ok, but when the third string gets added in to the pattern, the trouble starts.
@@michaelr.zookjr.4369 Andy and i did a lesson on that!!! Did you see it?
I starting playing at 14 and never learned this properly because no one told me to. Learning it at 50 kinda sucks. Tell my story, don't let them forget me.
Dude, I'll be 59 in a few days, and while I've been happy with my guitar playing for many years, it's always great to get a refresher on technique!
Why does it suck learning it at 50? Are you disabled? I hate when people act like they can't do certain things anymore because they're older. Playing a guitar isn't the same as running a marathon. You can sit on your ass and learn it especially when you've been playing since the age of 14.
@@chrisking6695 Um. it was more that I've played for 35 years without doing it properly there, chief. Also, maybe you didn't notice that it was kind of a joke.
@@chrisking6695 IKR?? When I saw this comment, I was like, "what the hell's this guy talking about?" He's 9 years younger than me! I love the thing about, "tell my story," like he's pleading through lamenting tears! LOL!!!
You're not alone my dude...
I'm hoping to carry this insight over to nose picking as well
hahahaha
I love a good boogie riff myself...
It's snot about the style, it's about the technique.
Gonna be able to pick both nostrils at once with technique this clean
@@AlvinWar keep going ur on fire
here's the actual shortcut. Start with a downstroke, then follow that with an upstroke. repeat as necessary. You're welcome. ;)
I LEARNED IT FROM WATCHING YOU!
That's what your mom said.
@@davidzamora9973 MOM!!!!!??????
@@BenEller still the best commercial quote ever
Huge news if true...
More alternator!
Time to replace that alternator!!!
@@BenEller love you man but why the Illuminati hoodie lol that’s funny
@@BenEller Alternator? More like Annihilator. You STOLE their riff haha. #AlisonHell

Been watching Ben for years and enjoyed his techniques, humor and patience on these videos. The truth to getting good or great at guitar playing is PRACTICE. At least an hour a day, every day non-stop.
Between you and Rob Baker I may actually get half way decent at this axe playing thing. Love your content, humor and attitude man. Cheers
Rob is a good boy!!!
This alternate picking exercise is great! Practicing both inside and outside picking with much more musicality than playing chromatic scale. Thank you for taking time to put this together.
thanks for watching!!!
You need a new practice speed category: "Abusive Stepdad Speed"
Haha!
You okay bro?
It's OK to tell!
Dude this riff is cool as hell. It gives the chord changes a sense of urgency as it climbs up the notes. You should write a whole song around it.
Your content is so practical! I can pick a video at random, and I know there's something I will learn from it. More than that: something I could actually use. Really appreciate what you do! (btw, that Green Beast could have a channel for itself - we would just watch it and drool haha)
That is some AWESOME picking, sir! Man, I'm pumped and ready to learn that! Well done, high-quality tutorial! This is the motivation I need in my guitar quest at this precise moment in time!
Will try this tonight. All your exercises really helped me to improve my picking during that twisted 2020. Thanks for these lessons, Uncle Ben!
I've found that exercises like these also help with fast Up and Down chord strumming like "The Edge from U2" type stuff by building strength and control in your picking hand. Thanks Uncle Ben!
I practiced this with my Harley Benton and went to sleep last night. This morning it turned into Gibson 60's Custom
So cool lick, reminds me the bridge lick from Metallica's The Call of Ktulu
Haha dude I realized that as I was editing the video!!!! “Why does this sound so familiar..... OH!!!”
Wait... Is it? Or is it just the progression?
I was thinking the same thing bro!
Rabbit it’s that fifth to minor six to major six to minor7th James Bond thing. Hangar 18 is very similar too. Super cool theme I think haha kinda always works
@@JanisKlinnert Yep i was getting a distinctly Megadeth vibe from it.
Ah yes the Bond/Hangar 18/Call of Ktulu sound
exactly right!!!!
Amazing stuff! I will sign up today to your patreon. Keep those lessons with back tracks for practice coming...
Thanks man! There’s a LOT to dig into over there!!!
I must say this sir. I find a wealth of lickology knowledge in your tutorials and I must say Thank you. Pretty much everything ya been posting is pure gold and I appreciate the lessons.
I remember learning about inside picking from Petrucci's Rock Discipline back in the day. Really love the learning methodology you showed in exercising that technique. Thanks, Uncle Ben!
Another stellar video. Thanks Ben.
I learned more better picklings with my handfingers with this one cool trick from my Uncle Ben
Totally love the Etude! Awesome job, Uncle B!
This could be in any King Diamond tune. Love it!
I'm just now stumbling across this. This is amazing. Thank you!!!
Love this exercise! I use it going up three-notes-per-string shapes.
Haven't even watched yet and I can tell by the irregular rhythm you've designed and watching your right hand end on ups and then downs.....this will be fun.
More FFVII guitar cover background music plz.
I just discovered you channel, this is the first video I am watching and it is amazing. Thanks a lot for the lesson !
Dude my wrist is Killin me! This is a tough one after a few minutes doing it up to speed. I love the pattern. I ended up going up though all the strings with this and man things are getting sore. Plus it sounds really cool. Thanks Ben. 👊😁💯
Love the cover of the Final Fantasy 7 tune playing in the background early in the video! Great video!
glad you noticed!
"Also, I have a DOD Grunge pedal.... just sayin'."
Damn that never gets old. Lololol
Good stuff Ben - and Happy 2021!
Same to ya!!!
Holly molly guacamole! That's a sick ass excercice and a fun one! Thank you so much Uncle Ben for this christmas gift ;)
This works great. Thanks! Having a single note on one string really highlights if you are doing this correctly.
You surprise us everytime!!! Love u Uncle Ben
You're an amazing guitar teacher !!! A few days of this exercise and I can feel and hear my alternate picking improving exponentially excellently'er
Another great lesson Uncle Ben! Definitely will add this to my practice routine!👍🏼🎸🤘❤️🌈
You make so many of these “improve your alternate picking with this one weird trick” videos and none of them are clickbait, repetitive, shallow, or wastes of time. I hope UA-cam pays you well for your efforts because it’s been a blessing for us on this side of the screen.❤
Glad to help!!! Cheers!
Thanks for the lesson. Just brilliant!
Sure enough this is way gooder than I can currently do it, you've inspired me to start using a pick which I've not done for years, my picking hand tends to be all digital.
This one helps a lot, thank you Ben 🙏
This is absolutely the video I needed right now. I've been working on all of the alternate picking practice routines, and they are getting boring. Thanks, Uncle Ben!
Wow. Practical and somehow wise too by specifying the built in frustration of practicing simply for 'metronomic' [instead of musical] goals. Thanks!
Adding it to my staccato practice routine for sure! Proud inside-picker here by the way 😂 Great video uncle!
not even lying, after this exercise I can go chromatically from the first fret to the twelfth fret and back (1234, 2345, 3456, etc) without messing up as bad as i did. this may be the greatest alternate picking exercise ever. i've been struggling with my alternate picking lately, so the timing of this video couldnt be any better. thanks a million ben!
Uncle Ben, this exercise is amazing, thanks!
On a different note, I'd really love it if you could do an episode on Children of Bodom. Maybe dissect your favorite licks, maybe do a solo/chops lesson. I mean, Alexi was a huge inspiration for me, and so are you! So I guess it's only fitting :) Thanks!
Excellent lesson! Home schooling turned you into great teacher.
Yes. An exercise that sounds cool is a lot more inspiring & fun to play. I´ll keep this one.
and SUBSCRIBED This is exactly what i was looking for/ needed
give me that knowledge, i will consume all of it!!! love you ben
So I practiced this for a few minutes yesterday and about 30 minutes today and my hand fingers already feel more smarter than they was before. Thanks again 🤘🎸
This was a super fun exercise to play along with.. great stamina workout too!
That etude is great from a mechanics standpoint and it sounds cool as fucking hell. Thanks for this great content, Ben
This one's a lot of fun. You're the best.
The "inside changes" motion @4:09 got me a little excited for a moment. 🍄
Hahahaha
You rock as usual!
Thanks Uncle Ben!
I am loving this etude. I've been an Economy picker for so long that my alternate picking was kind of suffering.
It's tightening up my picking hand.
Thanks Ben, you are more betterer :-D
Wow, nice! I love nice things!!
i also like things that are nice!
Really like these melodic patterns/scales/finger exercises… way more fun to play!
Wow this lesson was awesome!
Reminds me of the stuff in Petruccis books! Ben is great!!!
Thanks buddy
Great Stuff Uncle Ben ! Personally, I can get better speeds with inside-string picking (Economy) but have to sacrifice on the control given by outside-string picking. Thanks for the workout!
Defo going to try this as I’m attempting to try learn some EVH stuff (very badly mind you) and this will hopefully free my fingers and with a bit of luck hit one or 2 rights notes some of the time
That’s a badass practice track!
Uncle Ben!!! You did it again!
Has anyone felt a Hangar 18 vibe in this exercise?
🎵Possibly I've seen too much, uncle Ben you're my real step dad!🎵
This was great bro
Final Fantasy VII !!!!!!! and thank you for the excellent lesson :) stay save and healthy Ben.
Great video - thank you. I'm stepdad at 0.5 playback speed. The etude has a Call of Ktulu vibe. Very cool.
Thanks Ben, very interesting. On a topical note, the "Downfall" intro (Children of Bodom) is fun to play and it helped me with my alternate picking.
Yo, that is SO reminiscent of the underground music from Legend Of Zelda 2 on NES. You’re an 8 bit GOD
Thank you, again,, Ben!
The etude gives me hangar 18 vibes. I love it!!!
7:30...busted before I even get to practice this one...sick lesson as usual, thanks Unkle Ben!
Hahaha I knew you were watching!!!!
Thanks Uncle Ben, nice lesson! How about helping us up our hybrid game for the next one - saw some Rick graham stuff recently that inspired me to work a bit harder on that...
Holy lord do I need this... I was *trying* to play Who Made Who, and it sounded more like Who Made That?! (Adjust tie) I tell ya, it's a rough one out there, ya know?
Thanks Uncy Bang, and Happy New Year!
Your sound reminds me of Santana in the songs Europa, or Samba Pa Ti. Good work. Cheers.
Do you have a video on how to improve left hand dexterity? My step dad says I fret well...that’s how I know it’s a problem.
that is a pretty aesthetic T. Kelly green is underrated, underused. I think I'll paint like 3 of my guitars green now. Thanks Ben!
Thanks, Uncle Ben!
Nice . Sounds like an Annihilator lick. Great warm up technique.
Man that crazy Aunt Julie stimulus scratch off joke was off the charts! 😂😂😂
I love that Tele...absolutely beautiful
thank you!!! i do too, i can't put it down!
Great exercise!
Mentioned you and Andy today briefly in my Video! I wish I had these video's back in my. Instead we had the old Album that skipped at the part you wanted to learn or the Tape broke.
Hey Ben! You could use the chapters feature on UA-cam to structure videos better than putting timestamps on the screen
Love your vids!
Love a 24 fret tele. Just wish the 24th fret was marked and ta had humbuckers in it. Beautiful shade of green!
Could you please make a tutorial on how to create our own backing track like this one? Simple drums for non-drummers. Thanks :)
OK I tried a different lesson you have for alternate picking. It actually really freakin worked. So now I have to become a Patreon member. Grassy ass!
🤘Great lesson!! Extra points for the ominous zoom-in effect starting at 13:00 lol!!!
Eventually managed to try this out today, Jesus I really need to practice to even get up to great great step grandad speed !
Hehehehehehe, that grunge pedal was the first thing I noticed and kicked myself again for the brazillionth time for trading mine when I was but a wee lad. Thanks again for your videos Uncle Ben
Thanks UB
When I watched your meshuggah video I got a serious Tim an Eric vibe, and now that you mentioned pep pep speed, it has been confirmed. Salamè
Yeah I agree that playing something that is musical makes you practice harder because yea there is a goal.
Works for me most axemen that are almost pro except forALTERNATE PIKIN AND SWEEP PICKINNNN!!!! THX GOOD SHIT BRO \M/
Love that Final Fantasy 7 cover in the background!
hi unc. , happy new year, how about gear collection video for 2021: guitars, pedals, amps ... all we know is that you have DOD Grunge pedal ... just sayin'
One good exercice is playing the Min Pentatonic from the root on the 6th string, and then play the Relative major pentatonic from the root on the 6 th string => Am starting 5 on the E string, and C Maj starting 8 on the E string. on 16th note, the major penta is much harder to play evenly
