  • The Indian River County Sheriff’s Office did not warn the public about an abduction attempt in a Vero Beach neighborhood after they failed to use a translator while interviewing the first victim who reported the crime.
"The initial information when our deputies responded out there was very vague," Indian River County Sheriff Eric Flowers said to WPTV on Monday. "It was really possibly lost in translation as we initially spoke to her."

Fortunately, some clever clues can help you distinguish whether the person at your front door is a police officer. First, you should check to see if the officer knocks and announces their presence. You should also inspect the officer's uniform, which should include things like equipment and a police badge All suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law." Burt Lancaster provided the following narration on the pilot episode: "Cops is about real people, and real crime. It was filmed entirely on location, with the men and women who work in law enforcement." You could check their vehicle to see if it has nondescript plates or dark window tinting that looks like a cop car. You could also check their appearance for hints. If they have short, neat haircuts and are wearing cargo pants or shorts, it could mean they're a cop. Uniforms with stains and uniforms that do not fit properly are good indications of a fake. Also, look for a hat, which is a requirement for police officers. The uniform will always include a badge, name tag, and service tags. The badge will be made out of metal and will never be plastic or flimsy. Police are allowed to lie to you. Again, a lot this comes from watching TV. People think that if you ask an undercover cop if he's a cop, he has to tell you. That's completely false. Instead, the general rule is that police are allowed to follow you for a reasonable distance to observe your driving and determine if a traffic stop needs to be conducted. As you might imagine, a reasonable distance is interpretative and will vary based on the specifics of the situation Penal Code § 148.9 PC makes it a crime to provide false identification to a California police officer. Doing so is a misdemeanor punishable by up to 6 months in jail and a fine of up to $1000.00 01

They'll be able to verify. If it's one of their officers. Or not there's an unmarked vehicle that just pulled me over could you guys like tell me if it's a real cop or not yeah this one's ours Police impersonators are criminals who take on the “colouration” of legitimate law enforcement officers for protection as successful predators. In this clever reversal, the offender is mimicking the 'good-guy'” (Rennison & Dodge, 2012, p. 521). Impersonators do more than just pretend to be a law enforcement officer. At times, impersonators engage in serious and wide ranging crimes including robbery, rape, and homicide." The same study found that "in general, police impersonators, depending on the type of offense, may be easily deterred During an interrogation, officers may lie about evidence they have to pressure you into confessing to a crime they believe you have committed - even if you are innocent People. If that person is a personator. He don't want to be seen by the public it usually a drive away. But if they come up to your car crack your window. Stop. What should you do if you think you're being followed by a fake officer. Decoy: A technique that disguises a plainclothes police officer as a potential crime victim with constant surveillance being maintained by plainclothes officers. Surveillance: The continuous or periodic watching of persons, vehicles, and places or objects How to Spot Undercover Police. Undercover cops usually have short, groomed hair and baggy clothes with lots of pockets. They may ask lots of personal questions to gain your trust or look out of place. Unmarked police cars tend to have municipal plates, multiple antennas, and tinted Examples Show Cops do Not Have to Identify Themselves in California. Both examples make one thing clear: cops can lie about being cops. It does not matter if they are in uniform or plain clothes. They do not have to identify themselves, even if you ask them to do so. While these are not a surefire guarantee that you're being followed, you should exercise additional caution if any of these apply to you.
