As a wise barbarian once said "You can't take the gold with you. You can't take the sword+7 of booty damage with you. You can only take the stories and memories with you". And that's the real treasure. It's great to see you guys creating this GREAT podcast about exactly that!
Thanks man, it's only getting better from here.
Dang, now I want a sword+7 of booty damage
@@aislefivemusic so say we all
Dear gods and algorithms: let there be more of this content. Show it to everyone. We need more of this content in front of more eyeballs
Thanks! We've already got more episodes recorded and are working on a ton of new videos. This is just the beginning
@@blacklodgegames let's gooooooo
Man, you got a smooth voice.
I like the mission statement you put out there.
Thanks man, a lot more to come soon.
53:30 there are minor rule differences that make the world of difference. Mainly the amount of magic and the lethality. The immersion of d&d was entering a dangerous world and hunt for treasure. Everyone also always assumes high fantasy but even the 5e core books say that it is a low magic world where magic surprises people and doesn’t make a part of their day to day life but in action it’s treated as in BG3 with monsters everywhere, hogwarts town, Dragonborn, and orcs and everyone gets along garbage that destroys the grit of adventuring.
freaking theatre kids complaining about the axial tilt of Oerth! dammit! i role-play my characters and an intricate worldbuilding inspires me to do so because i am a nerd
I know right they are acting like their level of detail in acting as their character is the only thing that’s immersive , when some people are world building needs and geology and science of the world is immersive to them and people get more immersed in the minutiae of the world and it’s physics chemistry and biology
I didn't realise you guys were part of the RPG Brigade, although that explains why I subscribed to you 7+ years ago. To answer your question about the convention, BrigadeCon did run for a few years, then my wife and I took it over on the condition we had to rename it, and raised funds first for Child's Play and then The Butterfly Project. It was particularly important during Covid as the kids in TBP are in Uganda and they were struggling a lot even just getting food and basic hygeine items, but we raised about £10,000 for them. Unfortunately it was a hell of a lot of work, so we haven't done it since.
That's awesome!
I think the less-cynical side of me would say that a lot of the game experience depends on the people running and playing it, how much work and investment they put into it, and how much you all want to do it.
I'd rather play a new system with mechanics and a setting we're all excited about than a stale game of 5e, but I'd also rather play a 5e game with friends who are all deeply invested into its story than try to run some unfamiliar but cool thing just for the sake of it, with people who are just confused and don't care.
Good discussion! I'm glad that by and large people in this space are pretty good at talking about things and just having fun.
Agree 100%. My preference is to avoid WotC products but if the options were "play 5e with engaged players and DM" vs "play indie game with mediocre players and DM" I definitely know what I'm choosing.
I hope to see a manifesto from you guys after you fully establish this philosophy driving you.
Like Uncle Ted, we are working on it.
I do think critical role has positioned the newer DND base towards being open to the immersive style
It definitely has, which is a positive. Mercer is a great DM and the cast are very entertaining. Critical Role has been generally very good for gamers, and very bad for UA-camrs.
Thank you for this great podcast. Thank you for pushing back against the late night comedy that online D&D on UA-cam has become. You are right on about the way these games should be run for a peak experience. Many of us have been privileged to have some moments in a game when we were THERE! I played in one game of call of Cthulhu, and I still feel cold when I think about Lake's camp, and the genuine terror that I felt, along with my character when the Shoggoth came for us. So different than the normal experience in a game like this. More immersive than a movie, and a terrifying moment I will never forget. IT WAS REAL!!!!
Glad to have you aboard, and you are not alone. I have a ton of memories just like that

This channel has really grown on me.
Up there with Inappropriate Characters and RPGpundit
Gonna start making videos regularly soon, cuz of you man. We can FORCE a form of the ROG brigade back into the world. If at least half the folks I see on Discord talking about this take the time to watch the homies, there will be a reliable audience. We are the Cult of Ecstasy, the Celestial Chorus, the Order of Hermes, and the Hollow Ones all rolled up into one and we’re enforcing our glorious Paradigm on reality
Tell them to smash like and subscribe to the bell
Whats up gentlemen?
The air feels good in here. It's almost as if i can breathe better knowing I'm not alone.
It feels like i went out scavenging a little further and found a new group of survivors.
I just have 3 questions.
How many LARPs dreams have you devastated?
How many peoples dreams have you devastated?
Why?
I'm very excited about your take on RPGing and your goals. I agree with most of what you said, and I think where I might not is just semantics. You have a lot in common with the Servant of Shiloh (@RPGElite). I recommend you take a look at what he considers makes an RPG elite player; perhaps there is some synergy there. :) Keep it comin'!
Glad to have you aboard! Subbing @RPGElite now.
GREAT recommendation. Much appreciated
Well this gonna be good, I already know.
You get a mention in the next episode :)
@@blacklodgegames Can't wait :) Funny enough i just recently referenced Within the Ring of Fire and your campaign spefically in a discussion on how amazing those few years of google Hangout roleplaying was.
Excited to listen in on this podcast in the future
@@MrStrigori we are bringing it back big time. Going to stream games soon.
@@blacklodgegames my body is ready brother
Honestly, I get not wanting to deal with miniatures and tactical combat, but I don't think they're mutually exclusive with an immersive roleplay experience
They are just extremists that think their bubble is the only correct one
hey guys, wouldn't fate be something for you?
"Fate Core is a tabletop roleplaying game about proactive, capable people who lead dramatic lives."
I had the most intense roleplaying experiences with the system over the years.
Haven't tried it.
Board game night vs. Seeking truth in story
1:35 I have been summoned.
4:09 Such an awesome time for roleplaying. But an end of an epoch though.
havent watched yet, which halo games do you discuss in this episode
All of them.
Exelent video/talk. I am glad to see the both of you making them again.
I can see how americans would find larping juvenile with the style of larping on you continent.
But try looking in to some nordic larping, if you get the option, it might give you drama you two crave.
Not that I dont prefere pnp, you are at least not limited to what physical feats you can preform. Or have to go to the hospital.
We were actually discussing the Convention of Thorns as a counter example to our feelings on LARP. You are certainly correct that the American style we've been exposed to has left a bad taste
Subbed.
0:34 that’s always his point
What are you guys doing tomorrow for the one year anniversary of your triumphant return? LOL
Writing.
Is the near future one-shot the one I'm thinking of? (the one where we got doxed into stealing company secrets)
Yep
@@blacklodgegames I remember being an angry israeli action hero
My problem is that I can't find a game online that doesn't have woke BS.
I tried everything. It's always either D&D 3.5/Pathfinder/Starfinder, D&D 5e, PF2e but its filled with trigger warnings.
I just want to play an immersive game with laid back folks that want to game as well and take it seriously enough for the choices our characters make have meaning.
So I do feel disenfranchised. Very much so. I think there's no place for me in the hobby.
Try the ironsworn community
@@SkittleBombs Thanks for the suggestion. I really dislike PbtA, but I may give it try if I can't find anything else.
Let's gooooooo
I disagree that the tactical aspect of role-playing games is artificial. Unless your role-playing games never include violence, how do you decide who kills who? Does someone with magic automatically win? By making combat a tad more complex, you make victories a lot more real than a simple dice roll and some fancy flavor text could ever make them. There are preferences of course, but detailed combat are a vital Pillar of role-playing games with violence.
The mountain dew I wanna do all the chicks in the tavern crap really irks me. I don't really want to socialize in that manner, that's not what I'm looking for, I want the story. The experience there. It's basically why I never got into RPGs with other people because that's what I wanted but never saw it. I only saw a circus. The only serious experience of a story and a world was found in solo play much much later.
It's AIDS
Check the playlist Hell and Back for a 10 episode campaign/saga that's roleplay focused
Oh.
Oh.
Oh.
How do you sleep at night?
That's the neat thing. I don't.
I think that either you're way off base and completely wrong, or you did a very poor job defining what you mean by "have fun." If you aren't having fun experiencing drama, epic heroics, deep and interesting characters, and a shared storytelling event, then why do it at all? Obligation? Because that's the alternative to play for fun. If you aren't playing to have fun, then you're playing out of obligation and need.
We may have worded that poorly because that is what we are getting at. The fun *is* the drama, heroism, and storytelling. This is opposed to a more mindless version of fun seen in most current consumer DND UA-cam liveplays where the drama and characters are secondary to simply executing your character build. Engaging with the game and the characters *is* what is fun, and focusing on those aspects is superior to simply cracking jokes and maximizing kill count with a faceless, nameless character.
@@blacklodgegames I don't disagree with you, but I think you should find some people who do, and can provide you some push back so you can more fully understand your position. Nothing specific, but it does kinda seem like you're echoing emotional gut reactions rather than outlining fully-developed thoughts that have sound arguments to back them up. Good luck!
I think the problem is your suggesting that first person role playing is the only viable option or degrading others that have fun with the other options under the umbrella. If you were playing a play by post RPG campaign, you being first person and 3rd person are equally viable and used without one being considered role play or not.
You guys also dismissed delving into Larp, and imagine if LARP people were toxic about people who play around a table instead in costume in the field? You would be just as pissed with them telling you that you play ”inferior playstyle” and you need to put in more effort…in your eyes the larpers are the master race and should exterminate all fun that is less effort than their style
We are coming around on larp
Terrible.
Delete this.
Then you guys talk about light on , but no one is home where 50% of people literally cannot visualise images in their head and don’t have an inner monologue.
Degrading people for that is literally ableism or mental disability shaming. It could be related to people who are right and left brained thinkers, you may operate with your creative side > than your analytical side and others might be the opposite and cannot so they make due with what they have.
What else did we say
