The Real Reasons We Have Trouble Sleeping

- Functional Medicine is all about looking at the way our systems function together, rather than focusing on one part of the body at a time. The steps you take to support whole-body health work in the same way. Diet, exercise, stress reduction-they simultaneously affect more than just one aspect of your health-and new research has revealed that choices around these things can have major impacts on our sleep, and how that cycles back to support overall optimal health.
In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Todd LePine to discuss why so many of us experience issues related to our sleep and what we can do about it.
Dr. LePine graduated from Dartmouth Medical School and is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, specializing in Integrative Functional Medicine. He is an Institute for Functional Medicine Certified Practitioner. Prior to joining The UltraWellness Center, he worked as a physician at Canyon Ranch in Lenox, MA, for 10 years. Dr. LePine’s focus at The UltraWellness Center is to help his patients achieve optimal health and vitality by restoring the natural balance to both the mind and the body. His areas of interest include optimal aging, bio-detoxification, functional gastrointestinal health, systemic inflammation, autoimmune disorders and the neurobiology of mood and cognitive disorders. Dr. LePine teaches around the world, and has given lectures to doctors and patients at American College for Advancement in Medicine (ACAM), Age Management Medicine Group (AMMG), the University of Miami Integrative Medicine Conference, The Kripalu Center in Lenox, MA, and is on the faculty for American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine (A4M). Dr. LePine is the head of the Scientific Advisory Board for Designs for Health and a consultant for Diagnostic Solutions Laboratory. He enjoys skiing, kayaking, hiking, camping and golfing in the beautiful Berkshires, and is a fitness enthusiast.

I wake up at 345amim in a nursing home this moans till1230am
I wake up feeling rested, but I sleep a Bi-Phasic sleep, like 10-2am, awake 2-4 then sleep till 8am. I’m retired now so I’m able to do that, when I worked I always had an afternoon slump. I love my night wake time, it’s quiet, I usually listen to the Bible or podcast.
Get sunshine 20 minutes during the day, take a walk for 30 min, sing loud during the day, and take a deep breath few times a day and before bed time. Take magnesium and vitamin C together in the evening.
Yeah I was thinking the same thing when he was talking with Dr Valter longo. He constantly was interrupting him while he was in the middle of a sentence giving some good information and then once the doctor started talking again he wasn't even talking about what he was talking about before he was rudely interrupted by Dr Mark
I once had a patient told me if I want a good nite sleep, eat a slice or 2 of cheese! And believe it or not. I sleep thru out the night & wake up feeling fully rested 😁
Dr. Hymen doesn’t let Dr. Lipin talk much. I would like to see a podcast of only Dr. Lipin.
Magnesium glycinate, daytime sun exposure, adequate sea salt and stop using

Thanks
But I love looking at my phone to wind down before bed, it’s so relaxing 😌

Make sure your salt has iodine... No more pink salt! Lots of thyroid problems, since people started eating pink salt and low salt diets. You have to have iodine to make your thyroid work right!
There was a lot of very important information, about lifestyle and nutrition, and how those affect our sleep pattern, so thank you for that. But I think, there is missing link, which is essential. And it’s about trauma and chronic stress, especially in early childhood - they are the major factors and “promotors” for sleep problems later in life. It would be even more informative if this fact was included in the topic.
Totally agree. I know that my sleep issues go back probably to the very first weeks and months of my life...my mother wasn't able to bond with me. To re-create that essential sense of safety later is hard. I simply don't feel safe in going to sleep. There is hypervigilance. From this very basic lack will develop anxiety about going to sleep...which builds on itself.
Exactly, childhood lack of bonding and maybe also prior stress and trauma during adult years also.
For example I can't sleep when my boyfriend visits due to cortisol in high alert all night long. 🤔
Absolutely trauma related insomnia is most prevalent from both the past and the present.Jusr watch the news.We are constantly bombarded with trauma..a society steeped in trauma
Anxiety is a massive issue just now, I’m surprised it was overlooked. Anxiety around the pandemic, causing sleep loss, which in turn provokes anxiety around sleep loss, especially when we hear about the problems it can cause for the brain.
There are a lot of sugestions that anxiety and chronic infamation are conected. Inflamation based on nutrition.
So its good for people to try to live with less coffee, less sugar, less inflamatory foods like bread and milk, more magnesium and water and to see the effects. ( I personaly have try it and its pretty obvs that it works. Specially less coffee and more mag. )
Es mejor fumar marijuana 🥳🥳🥳
Anxiety about inflation, job security, about finances, etc.....not just the pandemic...plus the health effects of these vaccines - blood clots, cardiac issues, etc....

Apart from sleep disorders (e.g. apnoea) or substance abuse, hypersomnia/insomnia can be caused by having too much stress in our 'stress bucket' (Hippocampi). Thus positive thought/action/interaction & exercise helps us 'empty the stress bucket' so we sleep properly.. (I.e. poor sleep resulting from stress disorders)
True
I have not slept good for almost 30 years. 1-5 hours a night. Most the time I am feeling good in the day. I don't eat sugar very often, eat good. Weigh 125 and exercise, drink no coffee or soda. At night I am wide awake and can't shut my mind down. I don't have tv or a phone in my bedroom. I don't know how to sleep more.
My brother & I suffer from insomnia since are young adult years, have tried different remedies. We did research unfortunately some of it is Genetics
L theonine helps. Heard a huberman podcast about it, and I take 100 mg and some magnesium L threonate, like 100 mg. I think a better quality helps. I get douglas labs L theonine (it is a sleep aid), and I don't know I think life extension brand magnesium L threonate is good enough.
I can't do caffeine either, like at all, nothing. I think it's all just anxiety.
Does Dr. Todd Lepine have his own podcast?
I have found can't miss for sleeping. Cold therapy!! I accidentally came upon this as I consistently read about how cold showers or cold water immersion will replace weak and old mitochondria. I was experimenting with when I noticed a heavy tiredness, but a peaceful tiredness, came over me after a cold shower in the evening. But, cold immersion is the most amazing sleep aid. Consistently!!! I am blessed to live beside a very cold stream of water coming from the mountains. I plunge in to my neck as late as possible every night. There are many other benefits but the sleep was the first hugh benefit I discovered, accidentally!!!
That cold shower wake me up solid can forget about sleep. Bath at night for me works if warm. And swimming ( warmed pool is my infaillible sleep aid. Thought about installing a stztionary pool since I had a tiny backyard space in Manhattan.

I agree with Dr Lepine! Sunrise is so important for circadian rhythm and hormone production. Melatonin production starts in the morning. Dr Jack Kruse has lots of information on the subject.
Mark, would you mind please stop interrupting your visitor. We wanted to hear from him finish his statement. Thank you again😂
Again. No mention of the three-hours-awake-in-the-early-morning-hours that is sooo common in post menopausal women. I gave up the practice of medicine because I was so chronically sleep deprived that I didn't feel safe. Lots of 'functional' guys fishing around but no explanation and no help😠

I NOTICE DR. HYMAN LIKES TO INTERRUPT DR. LEPINE ... SO AS TO INTRODUCE COMEDY...BUT THIS TOPICS DO NOT NEED "SALT" TO MAKE THEM INTERESTING. GREAT MESSAGE AND GREAT PROGRAM ALWAYS.
This is a discussion between colleagues, not a lecture.
Maybe Mark needs to tell you to use internet manners and stop yelling in his comment section 😂😂
One thing you’re not addressing at all is post menopausal women who cannot sleep. I am not alone with this chronic insomnia issue. I take 3 mg of melatonin at 8:00 PM and I sleep for one hour. Sorry but you can’t change that! And yes I do wear a black out a mask and sleep with the room dark.
You might need vitamin B5 for turning serotonin into melatonine. B6 to turn tryptophan into serotonin.
@zoe1baby I had to get on HRT that made a big difference. I started at 64 yrs old 🙏🏼😍
Anybody have that 3am (+/-) like clockwork - and you are wide awake, almost agitated, absolutely must get up - get drowsy in 1-2 hours, mayne sleep a bit more? I did this for many years till I learned about histamine intolerance (see FB group of same name)... sleeping much better as I learn to manage the HI. God bless ❤️🙏❤️
I never engaged myself in day hours in exploring the world but when night starts, the peaceful darkness stimulate me for peaceful exploration and that exploration give me a mental peace.

2) If my interruption helps the viewer - proceed
3) If my interruption is an insightful question - proceed.
I dont mind frivolous things like you mention
Listen to Alex Jones to gain some perspective perhaps?

The speaker didn’t say much about melatonin. Too much interruptions to the speaker
Too much interruption yes
I used to turned and turned over (like a chicken in a rotisserie) on bed every single night without been able to sleep until 3 -4 am. Sometimes I just couldn’t take it any longer, so I got up from bed to start doing anything that kept me busy until the new day will came...it was terrible... BUT since I started taking magnesium and potassium, I am sleeping like a baby. There are lots of videos here in UA-cam made by doctors who talk about the importance of these minerals and also the right doses we need ...
Happy for you, that you found out.

I agree Mark keeps interrupting his guests. It's frustrating when I try to concentrate on the answers to his questions, it gets confusing.
I have the worst time sleeping. I take a quarter of a 5m sleeping pill which puts me to sleep most nights, but when i wake up I'm still exhausted. Thank you i will try winding down. On my days off. I sometimes don't get home until midnight then I try to unwind by blocking out with the TV.
Once again Dr.Hyman not letting his guest talk.
Yes, it's a bit stressing. But I think it is because he gets excited by the topic and his brain goes fast. I am similar and sometimes you don't even realize 😅 you are like "wired up", so to speak. Great channel anyways. Just discovered it and it is really good. Support from the Basque Country

No, that's not true, a careful review of the video makes the falsity of your claim apparent.
I've noticed most of Dr. Hymens' videos has a number of "ninnies" blathering on with the same claim, not based on reality, it's an easy way for under achieving narcissists to get a dopamine boost.

Based on my experience, this simple tip works. Finish dinner 2-3 hrs before bed & eat 10g or 20g butter 30 mins before bed time.
Suppose u want to sleep at 10 pm:
1. Finish dinner by 7 pm,
2. Don't take any food or fluids after that.
3. @ 9.30 pm eat 10g or 20g butter. Eat it directly taken from refrigerator [no need to add any milk or any liquid]
4. Don’t take any food or fluids after that.
You will get uninterpreted sleep and u won’t wake up for hunger or pee in middle of night.
Why?

What about all the nocturnal animals? I don't think all people are created the same. I'm definitely an owl and not a lark. But it's hard to sleep during the day due to outside noise etc. Also not everyone has the option to sleep at night. The world doesn't shut down when the sun goes down. You don't know what they contain (you know what they tell you and you shouldn't trust them) and they probably inject you with 6 virus strains which is way too much.

It could be your histamine bucket (research that), which is my issue. I am sleeping so much better (it's early yet so I expect even more improvement) with carnivore diet (took me 2 years to realize I need to do this), Ancestral Supplements kidney supps (provides DAO which breaks down histamine), and magnesium glycinate (400-600 mg before bed).
