I remember playing this at 5-6 years old about 25 years ago and it was buried in my memory, reliving all the game here was awesome not only because I could remember every level and that I beat the entire game, but because as a child I thought this game was super long and it barely takes half an hour to beat in reality. What an amazing thing the memories of childhood are.
I played this game on NES when I was five years old. I am 40 today. Get goosebumps through my whole body watching this, love the bossmusic!! Thanks for the upload
I remember playing a ninja game on the NES with my brother in the late 90's, and I have always wondered what the title was since then. I always thought that it was Ninja Gaiden, and I just didn't remember much about it. It was only until I recognised the first level and that Tank boss that this was the very game that I haven't seen for 20 years. I always love coming across old games I have not seen in years on the internet. The closure you feel is immense, and it takes you back to the innocent times of getting through a game back in the day.
i was going through the list of nes games on wiki and was checking every title that seemed to resemble the name and finally i found it today. i remember playing this game back in 98-99 in my friends nes. It being the second game me and my friend completed in co-op mode right after we finished Contra :P PS- great gameplay video enjoyed every bit of it.
Such a hidden Gem on the NES. This one really flew under the radar. Such a shame that it took so long to be reckognized for the amazing game that it is. Sure it borrows heavily from Tecmo's ninja themed game but SOTN holds its own. There are some different gameplay mechanics, the pace is a bit quicker. Stage design is definately different and although enemy design is Similar, still has its own feel. To me it felt like a cross between Batman and Ninja Gaiden with a dash of Strider thrown in. Lastly though, the score if above and beyond and really effects the pace and feeling of the game.
These types of games have their own genre - "Action platformer". Quite a few around, including the old granddaddy Shinobi. This game definitely feels more like Strider than Ninja Gaiden though.
It was one of my favorites when i was a kid in the 90s. I think double dragon was more fun, but i never saw that in the store where i lived, so i had to just rent it at the video store. But when you are 8 years old and only have allowance, you have to choose between renting games and buying toys, so so i didnt rent it very often, LOL :P
Agreed. I was thinking Batman, Ninja Gaiden and a little debt to Castlevsnia, but I see Strider also. Wish I’d known about and been able to own this game when I was younger! I’d have loved it.
look at all of those games, theyre basically clones/rom hacks.... they borrowed a lot from each other, but this one ,project doom, and shatter hand are really AAA quality.
You're not kidding. I read your comment right when I was thinking the scenario in this game is very strange, that Ninja Gaiden is better, even if it's sci-fi attributes aren't screaming in your face. Then when I read your comment a second later, I was thinking "Wow, I should reply to him. That's one of the best comments I read in awhile." It is very much like Contra and Ninja Gaiden, so Ninja Contra
This game looks damn good for its time. I had no idea this game even existed up until yesterday .Here we go all these years later play shadow of the Ninja Reborn on PC. 😁
I don't remember ever playing this, it looks reminiscent of the NES TMNT, Ninja Gaiden or Batman games (Sunsoft and Konami), which is great! Can't wait to play this on the Switch NES app!
I was wondering when someone was going to do a longplay of this awesome game. I used to play through this game constantly with a close friend of mine, each time quite different. For a long time, Kaede was my fave female ninja to play as... until Ayame of Tenchu, that is... :) Great vid!
Strictly Limited just announced there doing and releasing a lil remake of this hidden gem, nice it’ll get some more recognition again for a little, hopefully people who never heard of can experience now.
Does not hold a candle to journey to silius, megaman 2, powerblade, Final fantasy, the two zeldas, or castlevania trilogy...to name a few. Gun nac, Little Samson, and dragon fighter also had some great tracks. All better than what I’m hearing here.
@@kjcarter100 Journey To Silius had amazing music (specially the Main title track and the deserted space colony track) but personally I liked Shadow of the Ninja tracks more. Of course not not all tracks were outstanding (like any game) but Stage 1 & 3 are my all-time favourites :)
@@PaulRockey Those are all my personal favourites too especially still listen to Castlevania and Rockman 1&2 while working :P Also love the Double Dragon Series, River City Ransom, Contra, Super Mario 2&3 Music is subjective so of course everyone has their own likes/dislikes :)
Been looking for this game for over a decade.. and now i finally found it! Reason it took so long is because i had the famicom version named kage... I wish they wouldnt xhange the names
Definitely buying this game I’m going back to my childhood and buying back the nes I’ve already bought back the Super Nintendo in the box a few days ago!
Still play this game and I wanna pray that one day the game should be remade by the game developers on PS4 platform. This was one of the best game in my childhood , the last stage is my favorite . I must say the final boss was difficult but most coolest antagonist after Ashtar ( in ninja gaiden 2 ).. Viva la "Shadow of the Ninja"
@@demodeiowa Same with me! During my childhood days, when I was 7-8 years old I got to know about NES games and since then, I have been playing such rare gems games till now. The emotions embedded with the OST's of such fascinating games is really beyond words!
When I first played this game, it was 95 or 96 I thought it was super cool. Now a few decades later after playing bunch of cool games - Last of us, Prince of Persia, Doom Eternal, CoD Warzone and etc . I still do think that Shadow of the Ninja is a cool game.
I dont know why I had it in my own Head Cannon that this game is a sequel to Legend of Kage - and that the puzzle samurai boss of stage 3 was the resurrected protagonist of the other game. O.o
agreed ^_^ makes me glad to be born in augest 1985 2 months before the nes was released in america in october and became the first video game console i ever owned back then ^_^ long live the 80s and 90s
I remember when hold attack button, repeatedly pressing jump button(if you have turbo button just hold both) you can do special lightning strike attack that can kill all enemy but take half of your life point.
A great game, far better than the first NINJA GAIDEN. The game was so good it became a part of the franchise NINJA GAIDEN (on Game Boy : NINJA GAIDEN SHADOW).
The best best best best game there was there is and there ever will be.... The difficulty level was insane... Even more fun when played with 2 player....
say more than anything this was the game that got me into gaming when my older cousin gave me his nes played this back in like 96 when i was 6 wonder if i could beat it now
Probably one of the greatest NES soundtracks. Pure bliss.
I thought I knew most of the nes library and especially the ninja games. (I was a 3 Ninja when I was a kid) but no, I didn't.
This game was one of my best childhood memories.

Olá. Também tive essa experiência. A trilha sonora me fez viajar no tempo. Incrível.
Underrated game
Hidden gem!
This game was so fucking epic. I played it next to Ninja Gaiden and Mega Man.
I spent ages trying to find the name of this game... I could only remember bits and pieces
@@cramirez318 someone's on same page as me atleast
I rate it 5 stars.
The soundtrack gives me goosebumps....hearing this again after 8 years

Criminally underated game.
What you play here is the ultimate hidden gems
God I love this game, the Soundtrack is so epic.
Boss fight was the best theme
Thanks to Iku Mizutani and Natsume !
Increible, este juegazo! Nos predijo hace 25 !@ňos lo que estamos viviendo en 2021!
The ending is epic
Absolutely marvelous game by Natsume, and the best NES soundtrack to this date.. truly epic stuff

1 of the best gameplay and high quality sound and graphics in NES.
My childhood right there. I loved this game
Guess what's getting a remake.
FUCK YEAH BABY
I just bought it this morning.
@@chriswright6403 Is it worth it? I'm looking to buy it too.
@@xyanydexemtex3000 yeah, it is even better than the OG, however some levels were redesigned to a degree you would not even recognize them anymore
Kaede is a so cool character, she deserves to be better known and to have more fan art.
the Kunoichi from Natsume's beat em up The Ninja Warriors is based on her appearance in the intro
This underrated gem had the greatest retro soundtrack ever created.

Great memories came flooding back to me of this game after I picked up Cyber Shadow on the Switch. Definitely a great of the past.
Very underrated, me and my Brother played this for hours!!! Good times!!
Loved this game as kid, heavily underrated gem. It's like a Ninja Gaiden/Contra mix. Love it❤️🔥

Kinda Contra Gaiden to me.
Nice video.
Ya, just not as frustrating.
LOL i was thinking same thing.
how come ive never even heard of or seen this game till the remake happened? this would've been right up my alley back in the early days of emulation.

I can totally see how the GB Ninja Gaiden was originally a portable follow-up to this game.
This game bring back all my memories
The memories.
Nostalgia flash during the intro at 00:14 . Thanks for the memories. The intro bgm stayed in my memory till now. Damn epic!

omg so much memories....... the last boss used to be a pain in the ass!
Not gonna lie, that fight used to get me and my friend a run for our sodas.
I can't get over the music in this game. It's perfect.
Best soundtrack of any NES game out there.

the bgm when the tall robot guy with the big gun dies is the best feeling in the world.

This game is in top 10, surely.
I just bought the new version today and it is awesome!😊

it kind of lacked that certain something Ninja Gaiden had, but still cool and fun.
