I remember playing this at 5-6 years old about 25 years ago and it was buried in my memory, reliving all the game here was awesome not only because I could remember every level and that I beat the entire game, but because as a child I thought this game was super long and it barely takes half an hour to beat in reality. What an amazing thing the memories of childhood are.
Such a hidden Gem on the NES. This one really flew under the radar. Such a shame that it took so long to be reckognized for the amazing game that it is. Sure it borrows heavily from Tecmo's ninja themed game but SOTN holds its own. There are some different gameplay mechanics, the pace is a bit quicker. Stage design is definately different and although enemy design is Similar, still has its own feel. To me it felt like a cross between Batman and Ninja Gaiden with a dash of Strider thrown in. Lastly though, the score if above and beyond and really effects the pace and feeling of the game.
These types of games have their own genre - "Action platformer". Quite a few around, including the old granddaddy Shinobi. This game definitely feels more like Strider than Ninja Gaiden though.
It was one of my favorites when i was a kid in the 90s. I think double dragon was more fun, but i never saw that in the store where i lived, so i had to just rent it at the video store. But when you are 8 years old and only have allowance, you have to choose between renting games and buying toys, so so i didnt rent it very often, LOL :P
Agreed. I was thinking Batman, Ninja Gaiden and a little debt to Castlevsnia, but I see Strider also. Wish I’d known about and been able to own this game when I was younger! I’d have loved it.
look at all of those games, theyre basically clones/rom hacks.... they borrowed a lot from each other, but this one ,project doom, and shatter hand are really AAA quality.
I remember playing a ninja game on the NES with my brother in the late 90's, and I have always wondered what the title was since then. I always thought that it was Ninja Gaiden, and I just didn't remember much about it. It was only until I recognised the first level and that Tank boss that this was the very game that I haven't seen for 20 years. I always love coming across old games I have not seen in years on the internet. The closure you feel is immense, and it takes you back to the innocent times of getting through a game back in the day.
i was going through the list of nes games on wiki and was checking every title that seemed to resemble the name and finally i found it today. i remember playing this game back in 98-99 in my friends nes. It being the second game me and my friend completed in co-op mode right after we finished Contra :P PS- great gameplay video enjoyed every bit of it.
Does not hold a candle to journey to silius, megaman 2, powerblade, Final fantasy, the two zeldas, or castlevania trilogy...to name a few. Gun nac, Little Samson, and dragon fighter also had some great tracks. All better than what I’m hearing here.
@@kjcarter100 Journey To Silius had amazing music (specially the Main title track and the deserted space colony track) but personally I liked Shadow of the Ninja tracks more. Of course not not all tracks were outstanding (like any game) but Stage 1 & 3 are my all-time favourites :)
@@PaulRockey Those are all my personal favourites too especially still listen to Castlevania and Rockman 1&2 while working :P Also love the Double Dragon Series, River City Ransom, Contra, Super Mario 2&3 Music is subjective so of course everyone has their own likes/dislikes :)
I don't remember ever playing this, it looks reminiscent of the NES TMNT, Ninja Gaiden or Batman games (Sunsoft and Konami), which is great! Can't wait to play this on the Switch NES app!
I was wondering when someone was going to do a longplay of this awesome game. I used to play through this game constantly with a close friend of mine, each time quite different. For a long time, Kaede was my fave female ninja to play as... until Ayame of Tenchu, that is... :) Great vid!
Still play this game and I wanna pray that one day the game should be remade by the game developers on PS4 platform. This was one of the best game in my childhood , the last stage is my favorite . I must say the final boss was difficult but most coolest antagonist after Ashtar ( in ninja gaiden 2 ).. Viva la "Shadow of the Ninja"
@@demodeiowa Same with me! During my childhood days, when I was 7-8 years old I got to know about NES games and since then, I have been playing such rare gems games till now. The emotions embedded with the OST's of such fascinating games is really beyond words!
OMG!!! I finally found this game after a long decade. I had a twisted memory from my childhood with my not so loved polystation but this game is definitely one of my favorites, along with another Contra-like game wich I haven't found yet.
Definitely buying this game I’m going back to my childhood and buying back the nes I’ve already bought back the Super Nintendo in the box a few days ago!
Been looking for this game for over a decade.. and now i finally found it! Reason it took so long is because i had the famicom version named kage... I wish they wouldnt xhange the names
When I first played this game, it was 95 or 96 I thought it was super cool. Now a few decades later after playing bunch of cool games - Last of us, Prince of Persia, Doom Eternal, CoD Warzone and etc . I still do think that Shadow of the Ninja is a cool game.
Strictly Limited just announced there doing and releasing a lil remake of this hidden gem, nice it’ll get some more recognition again for a little, hopefully people who never heard of can experience now.
Thanks for posting this. It brings back many fond memories of late nights from over 2 decades ago. I played the Japanese version Kage. When did you first play the game?
Loved playing this game. On the second boss if you destroy the lower cannon and wait long enough the tank would run out of ammo for the artillery cannons. Awesome game both it and shatterhand had great music.
Damn this game is amazing, with a little more flesh on the story end we could have seen shadow of the ninja overtake ninja gaiden. It's like mega man /bionic commando/ninja gaiden/ a lot of components of other games found here. Amazing game I never heard of till now.
A great game, far better than the first NINJA GAIDEN. The game was so good it became a part of the franchise NINJA GAIDEN (on Game Boy : NINJA GAIDEN SHADOW).
This game was one of my best childhood memories.
this 👆
Probably one of the greatest NES soundtracks. Pure bliss.
Underrated game
Hidden gem!
This game was so fucking epic. I played it next to Ninja Gaiden and Mega Man.
I spent ages trying to find the name of this game... I could only remember bits and pieces
@@cramirez318 someone's on same page as me atleast
I rate it 5 stars.
Guess what's getting a remake.
FUCK YEAH BABY

God I love this game, the Soundtrack is so epic.
Boss fight was the best theme
Thanks to Iku Mizutani and Natsume !
Increible, este juegazo! Nos predijo hace 25 !@ňos lo que estamos viviendo en 2021!
The ending is epic
Sure it is
The soundtrack gives me goosebumps....hearing this again after 8 years
Criminally underated game.
What you play here is the ultimate hidden gems
Absolutely marvelous game by Natsume, and the best NES soundtrack to this date.. truly epic stuff
Loved this game as kid, heavily underrated gem. It's like a Ninja Gaiden/Contra mix. Love it❤️🔥
My childhood right there. I loved this game
Im crying...this is my childhood best game ever
Kaede is a so cool character, she deserves to be better known and to have more fan art.
the Kunoichi from Natsume's beat em up The Ninja Warriors is based on her appearance in the intro
This underrated gem had the greatest retro soundtrack ever created.

@@namelessjedi2242 There were certain pieces of this game found in Ninja Gaiden: Shadow for the GB/GBC, even if they were only ancillary pieces.

The memories.
omg so much memories....... the last boss used to be a pain in the ass!
Not gonna lie, that fight used to get me and my friend a run for our sodas.
The ONLY game on NES to feature a Female Ninja protagonist.
Kinda Contra Gaiden to me.
Nice video.
Ya, just not as frustrating.
LOL i was thinking same thing.
Very underrated, me and my Brother played this for hours!!! Good times!!

this game had the best music out of all the NES games I've played
Better that journey to Sirius for the nes?

Great memories came flooding back to me of this game after I picked up Cyber Shadow on the Switch. Definitely a great of the past.
much forgotten ninja game

up there with Gaiden
Yeah both these ninjas games were tremendous in NES era
Ive had so many fun childhood memories with this game
This game bring back all my memories
Nostalgia flash during the intro at 00:14 . Thanks for the memories. The intro bgm stayed in my memory till now. Damn epic!
What a legendary, gem of a soundtrack we had
I can't get over the music in this game. It's perfect.
This game is sick
This game should have been on the new Nes
my childhood memories
the bgm when the tall robot guy with the big gun dies is the best feeling in the world.
Game of my childhood. Loved it so much

One of my favorite games on nes wish they would remake it someday😎
Wish granted!
New version looks completely different. Way too colorful
Шикарная игрушка. Помню, проходили её на пару с моим братом. Незабываемо.
OMG, this game is so good! I used to play it with my brother on Dynavision ;D
This game has the best soundtrack ever
Here to check this out before Tengo Project fully announces the remake
Thank you!! I really enjoyed this Longplay!! Didn't remember I played this game when I was 6yo!
One day I will own this game. Much appreciated long play.
Games like this need to be on the switch.
2 more days and it will be.

Best soundtrack of any NES game out there.
I love this game and music BG too

Very cool game with that classic essence of nes games of that time.
A co-op playthrough is more enjoyable =p
Facts, I don't know why no one does it. . .😁🤔💯
Joguei muito, saudades da época de ouro dos games. I'played a lot, I miss this golden age of games.
I've been playing NES games since '87, and I've only just learned of this. How have I not seen this game in action before?
You would have loved it when you were younger
When i was small kid this is my favourite game ever.... I always miss
Man, this was one of the coolest games I played back then. I dunno why, i guess the music and the graphics

Decent, solid game. Brings back memories.
May favourite game during 90s
Porra que canal maravilhoso e esse ❤❤❤ quanto conteúdo
An honest gameplay. Well done. The ending was realistic, you won the battle on threshold of hp.
Thanks for posting this.
It brings back many fond memories of late nights from over 2 decades ago.
I played the Japanese version Kage.
When did you first play the game?
I can totally see how the GB Ninja Gaiden was originally a portable follow-up to this game.
cool game. great music and gameplay.
it kind of lacked that certain something Ninja Gaiden had, but still cool and fun.
Loved playing this game. On the second boss if you destroy the lower cannon and wait long enough the tank would run out of ammo for the artillery cannons. Awesome game both it and shatterhand had great music.
It's out on Nintendo Online NES for the Switch by February 19.
Used to be known as "Blue Shadow" in the europe.
excelente juego y uno de los grandes clásicos
To all who loved this game as a kid (and even now), apparently a remake is coming out for multiple consoles in March this year.
Fairly decent game, used to play it a lot as a kid.
this game looks cool. i need to add it to my collection

Another good Ninja Game
A remake is coming for 2023
I remember seeing this game at Kay bee toy store for 74.99 and this was back in 1990.
This game looks cool. I'm surprised I did not hear about it when it came out.
to think this game would be reimagined as a ninja gaiden prequel when ported to the Game Boy.
I never played this game. Pretty cool. Reminds me of Ninja Gaiden.
A great game, far better than the first NINJA GAIDEN. The game was so good it became a part of the franchise NINJA GAIDEN (on Game Boy : NINJA GAIDEN SHADOW).
80 to 90's generation was awsome!
This is my childhood games thanks😭😭😭😭😭😭 bro
this is another best games in NES
