Converting Xbox Live Gold to GamePass Ultimate 2024, Does It Still Work & What's Changed?

- Since the announcement of GamePass Ultimate in 2019, I've been doing the "trick" where you can purchase up to 36 months of Xbox Live Gold (at a significantly lower price than buying GamePass Ultimate outright) and then buying one month of GamePass Ultimate and then being able to convert all of my current Gold months to GamePass Ultimate at a 1:1 ratio. My Ultimate subscription recently just ran out and I tried this method again in 2023 however I noticed there are a few changes so I wanted to show what I ran into, what method I used, and what the new ratio and conversion process is.

Alright everyone, I did the math. With the new 3:2 conversion, if you buy 1 year of Xbox Live Gold for $40, convert the 12 months to 8 months (3:2), you're paying around $5 a month. Before the conversion, that would've been $3.33 a month. So not a huge difference, and I guess it's still better than freaking $16.99 a month.
Once my GamePass expires in 2024, I'll buy 3 years of Xbox Gold and just convert it. My partner and I split it because we find it pretty valuable since we play a lot of Game Pass games on PC.

After making this video I decided to buy an additional 12 month standard Gold code and redeem it while currently being a GamePass Ultimate member. It converted my 12 months of Gold into 4 months of GamePass Ultimate. The conversion rate is still better at 28 months of Gold being converted to 19 months of GamePass Ultimate while being just a Gold member over 12 months of Gold being converted to only 4 months when redeeming while a GamePass Ultimate member. In conclusion, even though the conversion ratio is no longer 1:1, it's still better to do this method over redeeming Gold codes while being a GamePass member or paying for monthly GamePass outright.
Guess depending on how much UGP you have left it's better to cancel get Gold for 12 months and and then upgrade to GPU.

Yes, that's how I've been doing it since 2019 when Ultimate came out. It's too bad it's no longer a 1 to 1 conversion but it's still a better deal than redeeming the Gold when you still have gamepass. If you can afford it I'd recommend getting 3-4 12 month gold codes and converting while it's still a better conversion because I'd imagine they'll continue to give you less and less for the gold conversion in the future. At least then you'll be set for the next 2-3 years.
So what happens if I buy two 12 month gold codes what will it convert to and do I have to use a whole new account ? I am not currently a gold member.
@@Masterchief-jx2meyou can have up to 3 years of gold and convert them to 2 years if ultimate. 24 months of gold converts to 16 months of ultimate. The bad thing is just 2-3 weeks ago I was able to upgrade for $1 but I waited a bit so I can actually have the 3 years of gold and the $1 offer doesn’t work anymore you have to pay$17

So basically you need to let subscription to ultimate expire, buy xbox live gold for 12 months, add that to subscription in console, then renew ultimate for one month and get the extra time from xbox live gold ? It makes sense they are subtracting time given that there is a huge value difference between gold and ultimate and they allow for a long time for players to redeem at equal value.
I was able to get 7 months of game pass ultimate from a 12 month game pass core code which cost me $54 it's still better than paying full price.
Just as an aside - Gold is now replaced by Core but you can still convert Core as shown in your video - HTH
Okay, so I just did this. I got 2x 12 Months of Gold on some keysite (was really just 8x 3 Months codes I had to input.) And that took me up to 11.Sept 2025. Now they did offer me a 1$ for 14 days "come back thing/renewal" instead of the 17$ it does cost for 1 Month Ultimate, but the new date for Ultimate is now 27.January 2025. That's 8 months lost? On a 2 year gold plan? damn... It's brutal.

@@blxckbear9 true, it is significantly less per month if we split it. It is absolutely worth it, but the worth is getting less and less as time goes on. That’s the sad part😅😑
So this was a bit confusing. I got 12 months of gamepass core. And i wanna go to Ultimate. When i change it, does it take 16.99 out from the gamepass Core and into gamepass ultimate

Its a 2:3 conversion rate now. So say you have 24 months you will get 18 months. It does suck but its better then nothing and you still get the more then less
I have never had Gamepass and haven't had Xbox Live Gold in over a decade. Trying to find the option to buy 3 year Xbox Live Gold so I can convert it to the 2 years of Gamepass, but the only options I see are for purchasing Gold are 1 month and 3 months.
Microsoft probably no longer lets you buy a 12 month Gold subscription. I know they quit selling their 1,3,6,&12 month cards in stores years ago. You can either buy the Gold subscription codes on eBay or Amazon to still get the 12 months cards.
The only way to go past 12 month is physical cards or digital codes for Xbox live. Through Xbox your limit is one year with option to auto-renew

So to have better bang for buck you should let your GPU expire and then get gold and covert it to GPU?
Yes, it isn't as good of a deal as it used to be but it's still better than paying full price for Ultimate or getting 1/4 the value of a Gold code if you're redeeming it while being a Game Pass member.

It no longer works 1:1 but you can get a 3:2 ratio it seems which is still good.

I usually would let everything expire and get a $60 gold card and activate that first then use my code for 1 month ultimate and it combines for 13 months

My Xbox live expired in 2019 and I’ve been able to play online with people since then even tho it’s expired. I don’t have game pass. Has this happened to anyone else?

My situation is somewhat the same. I'm curious as to the reason... do you have someone that you game share with as an added account on your xbox? If they make your xbox their "home xbox", you may be able to retain Game Pass until their subscription runs out. Could be wrong, but that's my experience.

I'm not sure since I never got a 14 day offer. If you already redeemed your Gold codes and currently have months/years of Gold and you're still getting the 14 days for $1 offer then I'd imagine it will convert all of it to Game Pass.
@@Mr.Everything so I just did it on my brothers profile. So he only had gold and it expired on 10/23/23 so I bought him 12 months and it gave me like a bonus 3 months for whatever reason so now it expires on 02/24/25 and when I clicked the 14 day trial for the $1 it said it would upgrade his gold to ultimate only for 1 year and 14 days instead of the full gold membership. So his ultimate will run out on 9/9/24. Idk I might of done something wrong or maybe since I didn’t let his regular gold run out this is what they’re giving me.
@@686skimaster That is likely the new conversion ratio of Gold being converted to Game Pass Ultimate. Instead of getting all of the Gold months converted, you get slightly less months but upgraded to Ultimate. It's still a better deal than adding Gold codes when you're a current Game Pass member or paying for Game Pass monthly.

Microsoft ended the year and extra month I see yours went through cause it says gold instead of core you did it before Core got released which sucks gold was better you will get 6 months instead of 13 months it’s not worth it until Microsoft has first party games their adding old games instead😢

Just did it today. Purchased 2 12 month xbox game pass core subs through CDkeys (goodle it) at a discounted rate of $53CAD (each, taxes in). Entered codes in xbox, converted to ultimate for $18.99+tax CAD. Got 18 total months of ultimate for $120ish CAD vs paying $21/ month. Steal.

Buying for a different Region seems kinda iffy. I wouldn’t gamble on it unless you can VPN that. I remember a friend bought me a game and I had to convert my whole store region for it to work, the. i had to wait for 3 months before I could convert it back to my region again… Microsoft has been at this for years, and now that Gold is being fazed out it only goes to show that they want more money. The problem is that with it all, it still is kinda worth the prices, but 20$ is over the limit and st that point it’s too late to cry about it. Unless M$ changes the price down again by Christmas and this is just to recoup money for people trying to pay Starfield for cheap😅

I just got rip off by Microsoft i had $60 xbox live card only want to play online for the year. I only got Ultimate for only 4 months what rip off. I don't use Ultimate at all just make sure use just get core for the year. PSN $80 year to rip off

I converted 36 months of Core into 25 months of Ultimate. It costed me around 90$ in total.
Where did you get your Core codes from? Cheapest I've found is like 24 months for $72 and with the $18 upgrade that's $90 right there.
