Desert Camouflage Paint: "Snakeskin" Pattern

  • This is the simplest way I know how to paint a firearm to be ready for the desert, or any environment if you switch up the colors. I'm taking advantage of millions of years of evolution that created snake camo. Ever almost step on one? If it weren't for rattles, and hisses, they (or we) would be toast.
    What you'll need:
    - At least 2 colors for top and base. Krylon camo paint works really well since it is ultra flat.
    - Adhesion promoter. Its a clear primer that will help your paint stick to all surfaces.
    - Mesh fabric
    - Masking tape and some model clay or erasers (to cover sight posts, or sight beads)
    - Alcohol to get off any grease
    - Utility clamp and saw horses are optional, but recommended.
    - Patience, as it takes time to do it right.
    Skill Level: 3 out of 10. The hardest part is prepping the firearm for paint, and being patient enough not to mess it up.

    I've done something very similar to this on one of my .22's as well as my muzzle loader. Very easy and very effective.

    Hey man, Great job beautiful pattern. I have an idea for another awesome paint job if you are planning on doing another desert paint job you should do a desert brushstroke pattern. Just make some brushstroke stencils out of cardstock and spray the firearm in coyote or desert tan for you're base coat and then using the stencils spray it with medium brown or earth tone brown and yellow. My brother lives in West Texas and he painted his FN FAL in the pattern and I can vouch that it is amazingly effective, when you get within just 15 feet it completely disappears.

    Looks great. I have the same Mossberg 500 combo, except with wood furniture. It's a lot of gun (and fun) for the money.
    Just two questions for you: do you think the paint will hold up well on the magazine tube, where the front end slides over? That part always gets a lot of wear (as it already has on mine), so I'll be curious to see how it works out for you. Secondly, are you planning on painting the trigger and trigger guard separately at some point? It looks like you left it be for now in the video.
    Thanks for sharing the technique.

      the mag tube will get worn down, but will be covered by the foreend when it counts (in the battery position). As for the trigger, I'm going to leave it out of the camo painting

    Nice. Like all your videos! A quick question: how do i get the paint off, to return to original state? And also, if the gun has matt finish (i have a Mossberg 590) does the paint ever goes off? Thank you. Keep up the good work!

    • @innerbarkoutdoors
      @innerbarkoutdoors  9 років тому

      You can use aircraft coating remover, brake cleaner, or acetone. Careful on your plastic parts if you have any. The matte finish should make it a bit more durable of a coating, but there will still be some nicks on the paint if you handle it hard enough. Adds character as far as I'm concerned. Thanks for the questions!

    Awesome videos! Thanks for sharing. Curious of your opinion of this paint job on an AR style rifle. Krylon vs Duracoat. And also if its necessary to take the gun apart and paint individual pieces? Or is it pretty straight forward to tape off areas and paint in one piece ? Thank you

    • @innerbarkoutdoors
      @innerbarkoutdoors  10 років тому +1

      There are videos on the comparison but krylon is simple. No need to take apart the gun just close the action.

      I am going to paint whole Rifle,? Don't like taking it apart,? Might mess up the Free floating on the Barrel etc.? Just lay it on some cardboard & spray paint the whole rifle Scope & all.? First time trying anyway for me.? Will see how it goes etc.?

    I don’t think you’d have any issues using standard paint on the barrel that will get hot. I have AR rifles Ive painted and then shot pretty hard without issue.

      Depends what you consider running a gun hard. At work my guns are fed using tax payer dollars so we sometimes get a bit toasty.

  • @scoutingfreegermany
    @scoutingfreegermany 10 років тому

    Well done, quick and easy, but don't you have to "rough the surface" with sandpaper, before you put the primer on?

    • @innerbarkoutdoors
      @innerbarkoutdoors  10 років тому +1

      The adhesion promotor is pretty badass when it comes to this stuff. If your surface is polished I would, but degreasing will be enough for everything else
