This track shows how good a band Throwing Muses were. Drumming, guittars, bass, vocals and harmonies are all spot on. It's brillianr how they can replicate what appears to be an intricate piece of music .
Throwing Muses! What a band. For me, Kristin is in a very select group of talents that are utterly inimitable, along with the likes of Captain Beefheart and MES. She's also a total hero, having severed ties with all record companies and becoming entirely self sufficient. Show some love for a true original people.
OOft. Nobody ever did it like the Muses back then. Great to see them live with Leslie Langston on bass - they were never the same once she left. Wish I had been able to see them live with that line up.
Not to take anything away from Kristin Hersh, because she's the only lyricist I have heard who can employ what seem like stream-of-consciousness lyrics and still be incredibly moving (and I include Bowie in that, whose songs always seemed like cold experiments), but the drums on this are like a fucking orchestral composition. David Narcizo's writing through this period of the Throwing Muses should have made him one of the most famous drummers in rock history. The drumming really is astounding.
"How can they kill children... And why do I wanna die"... I cry my eyes out every single time I hear these lines - can't help it... Such a beautiful song !
I had a section of this on cassette from around 85-87 and I always wanted to find it again. I just did a search of some lyrics I'd remembered. Here I am. Such a beautiful, sad song. Bittersweet joy. :) Thanks for putting this online. xo
"I CAN'T FIND THE ICE!!!!!" seeing them play this back then was always the highlight of my week..... saw 'em a couple of times at Chet's (Penalty Box Upstairs). those were the mf'in days i tell ya.
For all the people who are watching this, I saw these guys at "The Living Room" back in 1984 in Providence R.I. and they opened for my friends band "Boy on Fire". I still remember that the drummer had no cymbals. Weird. There were not too many people there that night but it was still fun.
The nontitled debut album stands as one of the pinnacles of rock music, after which only the next two EPs can really compare. Leslie Langston is so superb here, and was definitely the best bassist the band had. A shame they couldn't maintain this energy and strangeness, but it didn't seem like a healthy place to be. In any case, one great album is more than enough.
Presumably the entirety of this show was recorded with audio/visual; since the Pixies support set from the same night has subsequently seen a DVD release, I'm guessing by the changing camera angles this is a nth-generation copy from that recording made by 4AD. A couple of the tracks surfaced on TV (Mania and Soul Soldier; Wired, ua-cam.com/video/QutAU3ebW2c/v-deo.html), and Mania and Downtown got official releases as b-sides on an EP. So why no official release, even as a small limited edition run? Would love to see the concert footage in its entirety, and it MUST exist somewhere!
Who cares about the gender crap? At any rate, I first heard this song on college radio back in the late 80s. It broke through my normally controlled demeanor, and I was in tears throughout the song. Muses always make me cry.
@Stellar2591 I think it's cool that they used that song, but I've been listening to Kristin and the Muses since 1995. Whatever brings people to the music is OK. American Horror Story is an awesome show.
"they can no longer move; I can no longer be still"
Thx
That's going on my grave.

Leslie FREAKING Langston!

and orignial 4tet were as great as you imagine they were
Leslie’s Bass riff on this is as joyful as the song is a tangled web of beautiful fear.
I was at this gig. I sat in the balcony,
The Pixies were on first, doing support. I'd never heard them.
I remember them playing this song.
They can no longer move I can no longer be still
Absolute genius.

Brilliant lyrics, beautifully constructed and cross eyed with passion. I nominate it as a repalcement for our national anthem.

Yep. This lyric and this refrain has been playing in my head, in the background, since 1990. I'm a lucky guy.
So GORGEOUS. Even today. This band was a unit, stronger together.
In terms of music, this is as good as it gets. Unsurpassed.
LOVE HER VOICE!!!
This is the best thing on the internet
Mania is the best thing on the internet.
OMG - I was there!!!!
I spent the whole night staring at Tanya : )

what a band, just so good - visceral, tight as anything - so gutted I missed them on these dates with Pixies at T&C club
used to scream with kristin... very cathartic
one of those songs that makes you pull the car over
Yes reminds me when I was young
They were the first band i seen at leeds pol 89
This is the line up i would've loved to see. Alas, when they toured near me, it was a 18+ show. i was so mad. I played this to get my anger out.
Wonderful!
Today I've sent a message to 4AD asking them to release a DVD of this performance.
Resend. Resend.
vouch
One of their best songs.
Must have listened this hundreds of times 15 years ago.

yeah the lyrics are devastating and frightening, but it's all so beautiful too, amazing
Kristin rocks!! Love her...
One of the best 80's/independent songs of all time...Kirsten Hersh's "legacy" for lack of a better term now.
May 1988!!! HOLY GOD!!!
AMAZING SONG, BAND, LIVE!
TRUE INDIE ROCK ALWAYS RELEVANT!
what a great band!

Holy shit this is amazing. THank you for posting.
Newport's own...one of the best!!!!
Dave N. is pretty much everything Keith Moon was (minus the fame.)
... astounding. impossible. head and neck above the riffraff. what a goddamn G.
Jeezus. They were so GOOD.
ARE so good.

thanks for posting this!!!! awesome!
the lyrics are "I could be a smack freak." (or someone who is addicted to smack).
The quintessential Muses song. Oh wait, I already said that about Say Goodbye....oh well
Who cares about the gender crap? At any rate, I first heard this song on college radio back in the late 80s. It broke through my normally controlled demeanor, and I was in tears throughout the song. Muses always make me cry.
Agree....though not a woman, I hear a "woman's voice" so clearly in this song.
I think I was there - was this the tour where the Sundays supported TM? Best gig EVER!
This song is from the tour T.M did supporting The Pixies. The Sundays supporting T.M was in 1989.

do you have the rest of this show?
I'm T.V...........................
A slug.
@waxxer321: Yeah, but at 0:50 bass is out of tune! :)
love the song, hate the video
Your crazy you would not say that if you where at that concert.😂
they can no longer move ...and i can not stay still .
