This week we had Valentine's Day, and I was inspired by my love for another card game - the Star Wars CCG, by Decipher!
Star Wars is a pretty good love story, too, but the real draw for me was figuring out how to bring the famous main characters and their supporting "toys" over to Magic: The Gathering in a fun and flavorful deck that captures a lot of the same energy as the game I grew up playing in the 1990s.
What about you? What games do you love, aside from Magic? Let me know in the comments, and check out my sponsor TCG Home to get help organizing your collection, because there's nothing worse than losing track of the cards you love!

One of my favorite games to play is D&D. I've been playing since 2003. I just enjoy adventuring in a made up world being a person I'm not and rolling dice along with some fellow nerds/friends. Just a hobby and past time I have with wonderful memories

2:12 “Ludonarrative” is a cool word and I’m happy to have learned it today. Ludonarrative, a compound portmanteau of ludology and narrative, refers to the intersection in a video game of ludic elements (gameplay) and narrative elements.

    • @mralumina3566

I feel like game dev used that words a bit too much.
Heck we even got a LudoNarraCon every year so we can keep talking about that word to attract buyers.

In a similar vein to incorporating different IPs into a deck I had made an inscription themed deck with meren at the helm which fit the play style of act 1 of the game where you're pitted off against Leshy, the scribe of beast.
Someday I'd hope to custom make art for the entire deck and proxy it out.

I also played the Star Wars CCG for a long time and loved it. My fave memory was at a big tournament in Vegas where I used a lone Darth Vader, Dark Lord of the Sith and used The Circle is Now Complete to exile their Obi-Wan, force-choked Han, and then beat the crap out of a lone Chewbacca. Needless to say, the game ended shortly after that. Such a great memory!

My favorite game, a game I love dearly for all the good and bad is World of Warcraft. It got me to love RPGs and fantasy and it had a wonderful story... mostly. But sometimes there are relationships where we find it's best to go our separate ways, the game was changing and I didn't have as much time as I use to have. I cherish the good times.

Doing plot relevant stuff like Blowing up the death star and training Luke in the force involved multiple cards for steps in the process and destiny draws.
Each light side card has a dark side equivalent so if Luke goes into the cave in Degobah then the dark side player can play cards to simulate his dark visions of Vader. Flavor first game!

i've been enjoying hearthstone battlegrounds, compared to magic i like how you mostly dont have to worry about the money aspect, you get a slight advantage of being able to pick from more heroes at the start of the game if you pay, but other than that everyone starts the same in a game, its also a lot more fun to try out silly builds or just not feel as bad when you lose because theres no event structure where you have to pay an entry fee and your whether you make back your money depends on your performance in a highly random card game, it just starts feeling like gambling and really bad when you lose.

a card game i really liked playing was the short lived(? it lasted like 5 years which i suppose is fairly short in the grand scheme of things) bakugan tcg
unfortunately even at it's peak the community was fairly spread out and not the nicest place to be so playing in person wasn't really an option and playing online had it's own issues
but if you can find a couple of decks and someone willing to try it it can be a pretty fun time!
i also played a lot of the theme deck format in the pokemon tcgo when i was younger

I originally stopped playing Magic because I picked up the Star Wars CCG, so it’s great to hear someone talk about it even now. Apparently it still has an audience and it’s kept fresh by the “Player’s Committee” who release new proxy sets on a regular basis.
As far as other games go, digitally I play a lot of Final Fantasy 14 (so I’m interested in how it will get represented in the upcoming Universes Beyond release), and on tabletop I love Dominion (which was somewhat inspired by MTG) and Suburbia.

I have lots of love for Yugioh. I haven't played it recently, but I still keep up to date with news and stuff. Same for Cardfight!! Vanguard, which is my favourite TCG but I wanted to finish watching all of the anime first before getting back to playing it, just been too busy.
I still do love Pokemon as a franchise, but I disagree too much with the direction the games are being taken, so I have dropped the series. But I still do cherish my memories with it.
As for games I am actively playing that I love: Genshin Impact and Muse Dash

Can you speak to what you think Nicol Bolas’s goals might be if he were to get free in the aftermath of phyrexia and the loss of sparks from some planeswalkers? I’m running a game post war of the spark and phyrexia with these being the history and Nicol being the villain.

    • @MagicArcanum

I think it depends how much he knows about the multiverse at this point, based on what Ugin may have told him. For starters, does Bolas know that his own death was "faked?" If so, he might want to continue to remain hidden, and figure out a way to regain his powers. If not, he might set out to find Liliana and finish what he started before Gideon intervened.
Ultimately though, his goals are probably still the same as they were leading up to the War of the Spark - find a way to restore himself to the level of power he had before The Mending. He'd probably have to start by rebuilding an army of allies (or slaves) while collecting powerful artifacts again, which could be anything you can think of, from any corner of the multiverse.

See, I actually don't love Magic. For the past few years, I've hated it on principle. Far too expensive for anyone who doesn't make well above the median income, far too poor quality to justify that price (both in gameplay and physical cardstock), and the corpos have been absolutely out of fucking control in the past several years. Basically everything since Ravnica Allegiance needs to be walked back in some capacity. Also, for a very topical and timely complaint: Return to Return to Return to Ravnica? Seriously? The third return to Ravnica and you make it entirely fucking unrecognizable? Was everyone in design born yesterday???
