Fun Fact: Two of the monsters of the week on this show (one of them Snizard) were voiced by Bryan Cranston. Yeah, Walter White got his start in Power Rangers.
Can't tell if this is fans continuing the squabble between Nerd and Critic, or if you guys just don't give a fuck that they're friends so you just bad-mouth him cause your personal opinion is that he's bad.
I remember watching that as a kid and LOVING IT, even though I would have preferred the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles from the Jim Henson live action movies.
The Next Mutation as an idea for a story did have promise. The idea that there was a fifth turtle that never made her way to Splinter after she was exposed to the same ooze the four turtles were so she ends up being found by a different martial arts master entirely until she eventually finds her long lost brothers and joins the team. As a story idea, it is pretty cool. Its just kind of tragic that The Next Mutation botched it up so badly
It's one of those shows that you love as a kid but eventually when you get older you grow out of it. Then when you enter your adult years, you realise how much of an impact it left on your childhood. I've had the pleasure of meeting most of the orignal cast and hope to meet the rest someday. I'd also like to add that as Thuy Trang is still deeply missed to this day and we will always remember her.
I'm in the same boat. I grew out of it around the time that Kimberly left, but when I was college age, I got back into it big time, and I still consider myself a huge fan. Meeting JDF a few years ago was one of the highlights of my life.
i cant say the same as you though, as like James i love the cheesiness and the rubber suit monster fights, so that alone makes me STILL enjoy power rangers, even though it's quality goes to shit after the zordon era.
Bulk and Skull really were a bizarre element to that show. James is right, I had no idea they would become such a big deal but the actors are actually really good at being a comedy duo. At a certain point, from the little I watched of the show, it was like they had their own show within the show.
They're so great because we get to see them grow as people. They start as goofy teenage bullies that try too hard to be tough, but are always humbled in the end. Throughout the series though we see them begin to try and help people, including when they became cops. Then at the end of In Space, they rally the normal people to fight back against the bad guys and monsters who conquered the Earth. This all took place over a long period of time and it felt good to see them change and grow into better people. They went from the kind of people that you would call an obnoxious idiot to the kind that you'd be proud to call your friend, and they made the entire change believable.
I remember back in the day my friend had a Zordon toy that was essentially a clear blue tube with his face on it... He ended up turning it into the coolest bong ever.
Hey, I'm just thankful that she got a decent send-off. Some of the cast members back then weren't as lucky when they were switched out (Passing the Torch, anyone?).
On Gokaiger (Super Sentai season from 2011) the team changes to suits from previous seasons, since this was the 35th Anniversary season. When they changed to Zyuranger suits they give a proper skirt to the yellow ranger.
Bunch of UA-cam information from people who mostly never saw one episode of anything other than power rangers until UA-cam itself. And some not until a few years ago when it became "cool" to pretend to be in the know lol Fun fact, the whole point was to give us as Americans some fun stuff to look at but to adjust it to our culture. Not to rip off in a "fuck you" fashion. Japanese culture is really different from America so their background stories and all wouldn't fit. So they HAD to adapt. Unlike a lot of anime. Where even though the characters are basically Japanese in most respects, the anime itself is universal in idea. So there's no reason to adapt it and change characters or stories
One of my favorite shows when younger. The monsters were cool & cheesy & the theme music was great. Had the VHS tapes, toys & a few of the video games.
You know Bryan Cranston did voice work (on much anime, too) on the power ranger series, right? The producer named the Blue ranger, Billy Cranston, after him. And that's why Bryan Cranston is invited back for the new movie as Zardon.
a lot of actors got their start doing random voiceover there, alex borstein for one. uhh the voices of zedd and rita became anime dubbing staples after this.. I can't think of any other specifics, but it's one of those things like finding out michael keaton got his start on mister rogers
US OF ONE! I mean... ONE OF US! Now we just need to tell him about how Shout Factory has been officially releasing Super Sentai seasons. It'd be even better if he was a Super Sentai fan too. ONE OF US! ONE OF US! ONE OF US!
James said he's only familiar with the Mighty Morphin era, he doesn't have to watch the whole series to know this. He has enough information to form his opinion and plus he explained that he already knew how popular the show was when it came out in part 1 in this video. But he's never seen any episodes until now.
and THAT'S why the new movie's trailer is SO BAD! They put hip hop and rap music where there was metal UP YOUR ASS. Power Rangers was heavy af,they shouldn't change that.
The Sentai footage is always easy to distinguish from the American footage. Even in the modern seasons. The type of camera is just different, the suits are shinier, fitted better, and the action is way higher budget and quality. The locations of the Japanese footage are always more epic and interesting as well. The American footage usually just takes place in a local park. Even to this day, the American suit-footage looks like cosplay compared to the original Sentai footage.
What did you expect? The pr franchise is a past its prime like only by die-hard fans mess. In the comics there is an issue where mr. floating head sends 5 RANDOM PEOPLE on the moon where 3 DIE!!! If a 180 turn in tone doesn't scream of desperation i don't know what.(plus because social justice the leader red is a woman and a guy wears pink) I hope most of the budget goes to TOEI, it can be used to make better shows.
Raximus3000 actually I have less an issue with a female red in a comic, it allows something mostly impossible to do in the show and that has only been done twice, in SPD where a woman leads Squad A and Samurai where the real ranger was supposed to be Lauren but her arc was very poorly managed. If she is poorly made, same is true.
Well the good thing is is that Shout! Factory TV and Crunchyroll have a ton of Ultraman shows never before officially aired/released in the U.S to stream legally. Ultraman Nexus is the highly recommended.
15:22 I know lots of people have the same complaints about Justin being a kid, but try and look at this logically: Have you ever seen a child stunt actor? Even if a kid can do martial arts and acrobatics there's no way anyone would do this and risk having a child getting injured or dying. Also the yellow ranger, white ranger and gold ranger from zyuranger, dairanger and ohranger were played by kids too.
Also James! if you are reading this, I hope you do more of the noob reviews. It's absolutely entertaining as all hell, and I would request that you should do a noob review of DragonBall Z!
Its so freaking awesome. MMPR started at a perfect time for a lot of kids like myself that was getting older from the TMNT erra. So I had two great shows to watch saturday mornings lol. We even got to me Austin St John today at a signing he was doing at a local comic/game store. That was a great walk down memory lane. It put me in a great mood. Felt just like a kid again, just much bigger now lol.
Ariel Escobar not really, since it's a still from Gokaiger, the sentai series where the heroes have the ability to morph into past sentai teams, the member that turns into the white ranger is an adult
guys you only need 2 watch 2 super sentai seasons, Choushinsei Flashman but most importantly Choujuu Sentai Liveman. you can get them in spanish or brazilian and see it u can get subs from there too. not sure. other than that kido keiji jiban is definitely one of the best ever. up there with liveman and maybe even better. oh and if you have time only if you have time check out kamen rider dragon knight, it's quite good for being a new-ish western adaptation of a japanese kamen show. if you dont mind western kaiju/sentai programs
I watched Kyoryuger and Gokaiger, which are way better than their Power Rangers counterpart. Something tells me that Super Sentai tends to be overall better than Power Rangers, because, well... the action footage is meant to fit the story that the Japanese wrote for their shows. On the other hand, don't know with which Kamen Rider series to start. They recommended me W and Gaim.
That Power Rangers movie had one God awful, yet incredibly catchy song in it."Trouble" by a pop duo from the UK called Shampoo. *Uh-Oh We're In Trouble.Something's Come Along And It's Burst Our Bubble*
I'm sad you missed out on this as a kid but its really awesome that you went back and gave it a chance. Super Sentai is awesome too, Dairanger and Jetman are the best.
If you didn't know, Power Rangers is kind of a Saga until SPACE (the 4th series) and then it's like every season is a standalone show. The final episodes of SPACE is just epic (or at least that's how i remember it)
Ever notice that the original Power Rangers villains actually have a theme in their designs? They basically consist of mythical creatures and monsters namely a witch, a manticore, a lamia, a leprechaun, a vampire, and a troll.
James, Shout Factory is currently streaming Super Sentai Zyuranger (MMPR Season 1) and Dairanger which is kind of MMPR Season 2 but not really. In case you really want to check it out soon.
Eerie Indiana was so goddamn weird, and what's even weirder is that I'm the ONLY ONE who remembers the show out of everyone I know. It used to play every day too.
My personal favorite, too. I liked it so much, I quit watching power rangers when in space ended, because of disappointment.. and, the recycling of the astro megazord was odd for me too. I skipped most seasons entirely, only watching a couple of episodes of Operation overdrive, and Samurai, to see how they compared to the Japanese versions, in which, I'd say Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger became my favorite.
"in Space" was really the finality/conclusion they'd built up to over what... 7 years? It's a perfectly fine sendoff for those of us moving on to Guitar Hero/Rock Band at the time; and the new versions are still very approachable and kid-friendly. But it's not just Astro that comes back. Damn near every living PR in existence guest stars in just about every season of each show. It's a mess, but pretty true to form.
The thing about In Space is it was very mature for what it was and it had actual story that lead to the ending, the only way that series could of ended better is if they could of gotten all the power rangers actors for the ending scene.
This has become one of my favourite Cinemassacre Reviews, mostly because despite the fact that James was completely new to this series he actually got a lot of things right. He totally understood the whole deal with the recycled Japanese footage. I know people nowadays who watched Power Rangers as kids and still to this day don't understand this. Like they could come across clips of the original Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger and just think that some Japanese show was stealing from Power Rangers, kind of like what happened with Turkish Star Wars!
FUN FACT: Mighty Morphin's yellow ranger was actually a guy in Super Sentai, that's why the yellow suit didn't have skirt unlike pink ranger. And white ranger in it's Japanese counterpart was a kid and he stayed in kid size when he transformed.
The fact what you can feel excitement and wonder for something made for kids over 20 years ago is truly amazing. I wish I could have more friends like you, James.
6:55 "over and over again" Well, that's "monster of the week" and why I can't stand it anymore. One show was enough, once I recognized it happening in Pokemon I dropped that as a kid. TMNT (1987) at least had jokes and cool settings
When I said AVGR I meant to say "A Very Good Review", I don't have the pleasure of meeting the youtuber you are talking about. Jame's AVGN (Angry Video Game Nerd) is not what I meant to say.
Man, there are some really great games and some absolute dumpster fires in that series. MMPR the Fighting Edition is still one of my favorite fighting games of all time
Power Rangers: The Movie: the game (James will get a kick out of that) was one of those rare examples whn the game is better than the movie it was based on (at least on the Genesis)
This review was enjoyable because it's neat to watch a noob become a fan rather than just crap on the show and it's also cool that you thought the movie should honor the show which is what every fan thinks. I haven't watched the movie yet but I'm excited to see it
That's the point. The show was a combination of over-the-top Japanese stuff like rubber-suit monsters duking it out with gigantic robots and people waving their hands way too expressively with typical US teen drama with slapstick comic reliefs and hot-pink dresscode. It's Super Sentai meets Saved by the Bell. It's a mess but I loved it as a kid. :D
Funny about that closing statement, James. Power Rangers and its monster fights WERE the actual gateway to the Godzilla movies (and others in the genre) for me and many '90s kids. I owe a lot to this show. Even if it is goofy, it's still great, cheesy fun!
Elizabeth Banks is perfectly cast in the new movie. Even with the weird design of Rita, she sounds spot on in the few snippets of her lines from the trailer.
ah! you just brought back so many memories of my childhood. I couldn't help but laugh out loud when you brought up Kimberly leaving because you summed up all my feelings perfectly lol.
When this show came out, I was 3. It hit me at the perfect time. I was obsessed with Dinosaurs and it was mixed with superheros and great music. I was also obsessed with Jurassic Park and TMNT.
I loved both of these videos. It made me feel so nostalgic! Loved your view on it, and yeah the japanese monsters look so cool. I I just remembered that you have your own giant monster battle in the legend of zelda majora's mask. In Stone Tower, you use the giant's mask and you fight a giant monster. I thought it was a really cool idea!
Fun Fact: Two of the monsters of the week on this show (one of them Snizard) were voiced by Bryan Cranston. Yeah, Walter White got his start in Power Rangers.

When not in character, he has this rather soothing quality to his voice.
GunvorPlays speaking of listening, what is the music at the beginning of the video from?
GunvorPlays i agree
Someone tell him that Power Rangers in space cross overed with Ninja Turtles.
LamangoKaijura Yup, it's episode 4. You can watch it on Netflix
He already knows that, he made a video where he talked about the live action turtles show and he mentioned the crossover
I remember watching that as a kid and LOVING IT, even though I would have preferred the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles from the Jim Henson live action movies.

@@arcsparkasriel Funny how she just happens to ALSO end up with a martial arts master. They were everywhere back then I suppose.

The comment about Kimberly is spot on.
Hey, I'm just thankful that she got a decent send-off. Some of the cast members back then weren't as lucky when they were switched out (Passing the Torch, anyone?).
Yeah I was bummed out when she left the show, but at least the Australian chick (Kat) that replaced her was pretty cute too.
Billy was my favorite ranger of all so it was quite a tearjerker when he left.
Kimberly is overrated. Jen is best waifu Pink Ranger
FRISHR-Kimberly is awesome! But yeah, Jen is the best.
Fun fact, only the pink ranger wears a skirt because the sentai yellow ranger was also a man
Pimpdaddy Habetler Another Fun Fact, The White Ranger Is A Kid In Super Sentai
And that kid played Kid Burai in a flashback in Zyuranger.
On Gokaiger (Super Sentai season from 2011) the team changes to suits from previous seasons, since this was the 35th Anniversary season.
When they changed to Zyuranger suits they give a proper skirt to the yellow ranger.
the japanese counterpart of the Gold Ranger in Zeo was a kid too

To be honest, I think all the motions and poses they do are to help emote. You can't show your facial reactions and expressions from behind a helmet.
If they didn't move, you would have no idea who's talking.
Fun fact, most of the time in Sentai they didn't talk while fighting.
And then you have the poses that looked... a bit too much like the nazi salute. Oh Sentai, you...
In the Japanese Footage yes, it's very fitting most of the time. But the american Footage is insulting and stupidly over done, Jeff Puit was a idiot

This warms my heart. Glad to hear you enjoyed watching Power Rangers, James.
Five Words: Super Human Samurai Syber Squad.
Best Power Rangers knock off ever.
What, you weren't a fan of Tattooed Teenage Alien Fighters From Beverly Hills?
12:11 you can totally see his balls.
THATS MEANT TO BE A KID IN JAPAN! WHAT THE FUCK?!
Were
Ariel Escobar not really, since it's a still from Gokaiger, the sentai series where the heroes have the ability to morph into past sentai teams, the member that turns into the white ranger is an adult
I can totally see YOUR balls. o.o
dam you , i did not notice before , now its all i pay attention to
I'm surprised you didn't mention how the Dragonzord is based off Godzilla and even resembles MechaGodzilla.
the Dragonzord was always great to see in action, sadly i dont think it got as much limelight as it should've gotten.
Godzilla is based on Rhedosaurus and it has far more sense then bullshit claim that Dragonzord was based on Godzilla.
I'm suprised he didn't mention that Dragonzord's scream is identical or very close to Godzilla's.
Another thing that made Power Rangers so great was the awesome rock music! Songs like "Fight" and "I Will Win" never get old.
Shane Everett true
now talk about super sentai.
guys you only need 2 watch 2 super sentai seasons, Choushinsei Flashman but most importantly Choujuu Sentai Liveman.
you can get them in spanish or brazilian and see it u can get subs from there too. not sure.
other than that kido keiji jiban is definitely one of the best ever. up there with liveman and maybe even better.
oh and if you have time only if you have time check out kamen rider dragon knight, it's quite good for being a new-ish western adaptation of a japanese kamen show. if you dont mind western kaiju/sentai programs
My Super Senpai introduced me to Super Hentai......all I wanted was Ginyu Tokuhentai.....
Your rhyme level just super went high, hence why I replied LOL
and Kamen Rider!!!
5:04 Fun Fact: The Pumpkin was played by Bryan Cranston AKA Walter White from Breaking Bad.
And Hal from Malcolm in the Middle, which told me the actors name before I knew he was in Power Rangers.
I had a thing for Kimberly and Ashley back in the day and Ashley Hammond from Turbo.
That Power Rangers movie had one God awful, yet incredibly catchy song in it."Trouble" by a pop duo from the UK called Shampoo.
*Uh-Oh We're In Trouble.Something's Come Along And It's Burst Our Bubble*
listen further along into the credits for the alpha song lol
Man, that song... did NOT age well.
i haven't heard that in years
TRUE FACT: The producer of the song Trouble was Simon Cowell.
almost forgot about that song lmao
I'm sad you missed out on this as a kid but its really awesome that you went back and gave it a chance. Super Sentai is awesome too, Dairanger and Jetman are the best.
If you didn't know, Power Rangers is kind of a Saga until SPACE (the 4th series) and then it's like every season is a standalone show.
The final episodes of SPACE is just epic (or at least that's how i remember it)
there's still continuity after it.
yeah, but it felt more like a saga until that point
There's continuity until the Neo Saban era where they just said fuck it with Megaforce and Dino Charged.
In case you really want to check it out soon.
you can watch it on tubi tv now
good job James, now you must review Goosebumps and Eerie Indiana for halloween 2017.
Wake me up!
Eerie Indiana was so goddamn weird, and what's even weirder is that I'm the ONLY ONE who remembers the show out of everyone I know. It used to play every day too.
Can't wake up!
SAAAAAAAVE MEEEEEE!
readordiefanatic lol ur my hero
Haha, the Turbo movie characters have the look of McDonald's Playland figures (you know, The Hamburgler, Grimace, Birdie, and Fry-kins)!
It's a real shame you stopped right before in space since that is considered by most fans as the best season of zordon/saban era
Hehe moving on to Guitar hero :p what year was it? I was a bit to old for Power Rangers, was watching Ninja Turltes in my day.
The thing about In Space is it was very mature for what it was and it had actual story that lead to the ending, the only way that series could of ended better is if they could of gotten all the power rangers actors for the ending scene.
To be fair, he only stopped for the purposes of this video. Surely he'll continue watching on a slower rythm.
There's a damn good reason people were hacking this show's theme song into Guitar Hero games. IJS.
That song though,it transforms you into a fan just by itself!Go!Go!POWER RANGERS!!I just wanna hear it as an instrumental only, karaoke style.
dont remind me of that one fatal time in Goaranger
When the movie came out, the cg of Ivan was really offputting in a horror kind of way. I remember it looking so uncanny it actually scared me.
I remember watching the Power Rangers movie as a kid and think the CGI was AMAZING!! It was still relatively new back then.
Dude-- I have been watching you for YEARS.. and I really am glad I found you then, and glad you still continue to make fucking great content.
FUN FACT:
Mighty Morphin's yellow ranger was actually a guy in Super Sentai, that's why the yellow suit didn't have skirt unlike pink ranger.
And white ranger in it's Japanese counterpart was a kid and he stayed in kid size when he transformed.
6:41 Loving the Iron Maiden references.
More of these please!
Every time James looks into the camera it fills my body with sexual energy
+bob saggzs Uuuhhh...
bob saggzs .... when did you become 1 half of the nasty boys?
Weirdo
Please do a noob's review of Kamen Rider, it's such an underrated series in the west, you'd love it
I fully support this
The fact what you can feel excitement and wonder for something made for kids over 20 years ago is truly amazing. I wish I could have more friends like you, James.
Fun fact, the original Power Rangers theme was recorded by Megadeth, that's why it's so awesome.
no, it wasn't
6:55
"over and over again"
Well, that's "monster of the week" and why I can't stand it anymore. One show was enough, once I recognized it happening in Pokemon I dropped that as a kid. TMNT (1987) at least had jokes and cool settings
That Frankenstein's monster (05:18) looks strangely like Mike Matei! Or is it just me?
In Japan once a voice actor is hired they do the voice for life.
I always thought Lord Zed looked like Baraka from Mortal Kombat..
James reviewing Zyuranger when? I believe Shout Factory released it on DVD on the US, right?
Congratulations James that was AVGR
When I said AVGR I meant to say "A Very Good Review", I don't have the pleasure of meeting the youtuber you are talking about.
Jame's AVGN (Angry Video Game Nerd) is not what I meant to say.
Great episode. Now do an AVGN video with Power Rangers videogames.
he will probable do one closer to the new movie release
Man, there are some really great games and some absolute dumpster fires in that series.
MMPR the Fighting Edition is still one of my favorite fighting games of all time
Better the Sentai (after all Linkara already did that). Maybe we Henshin AVGN here ;D
Power Rangers: The Movie: the game (James will get a kick out of that) was one of those rare examples whn the game is better than the movie it was based on (at least on the Genesis)
the power rangers Game , at least the genesis one , is bloody great!
The rest .. Well... It's Nerd's Rant Material :D
This review was enjoyable because it's neat to watch a noob become a fan rather than just crap on the show and it's also cool that you thought the movie should honor the show which is what every fan thinks. I haven't watched the movie yet but I'm excited to see it
I like this fresh approach and how you got into it like you never missed it, with contradictions and all. Thank you!
This is so wholesome, you can really see how much he liked the show :) is just right up his alley
James' Brain:
Phil Swift: "THAT'S A LOTTA DAMAGE!!"
BeatlesOasisFan they wave their hands to show emotion. I think power rangers overdid with the dubbed dialogue.
"What else could possibly happen in 23 seasons?" Dude you haven't seen anything yet
Aside from Red Letter Media your Film reviews are the most delightful. Keep it going, James :)
Funny about that closing statement, James. Power Rangers and its monster fights WERE the actual gateway to the Godzilla movies (and others in the genre) for me and many '90s kids. I owe a lot to this show. Even if it is goofy, it's still great, cheesy fun!
The remark about Kimberly leaving comes off as awkward to me. With her being singled out, I feel like I'm overhearing someone reveal their crush.
Elizabeth Banks is perfectly cast in the new movie. Even with the weird design of Rita, she sounds spot on in the few snippets of her lines from the trailer.
I LOVED Power Rangers as a kid, it was just kick ass. Monsters/Robots/Fighting/Kickassmusic! Whats not to like?!
ah! you just brought back so many memories of my childhood. I couldn't help but laugh out loud when you brought up Kimberly leaving because you summed up all my feelings perfectly lol.
When this show came out, I was 3. It hit me at the perfect time. I was obsessed with Dinosaurs and it was mixed with superheros and great music. I was also obsessed with Jurassic Park and TMNT.
sick review, this is how you review something, would like to see his opinion on the new movie after it comes out, I plan on seeing it too
Can you review Zeo-In Space? It's part of the Zordon era and was the golden era of Power Rangers.
Nice review James, can you watch and review Kamen Rider plzz
Ryu Techa He would LOVE Ex-aid
I watched the Disney era of Power Rangers, Wild Force, Ninja Storm, Dino Thunder, SPD, Mystic Force, Operation Overdrive, Jungle Fury and RPM
