This video was a lot of fun to shoot! Like a salmon returning to its hatching location to spawn, I revisit my fishing origins. I started kayak fishing in this exact water. Coincidentally, I return after roughly the life span of a coho salmon. It was a lot of fun to come back to these waters with more experience. The fishing was REALLY BAD. I can think of at least 5 other spots that are consistently more productive but all were off limits. The number of boats only makes it even harder. I would NOT recommend this as a first salmon trip on a kayak. And it's important to note that this body of water is only legal for salmon fishing about 4 days per year.
This was the first time I tried to prepare my own raw fish. I heard about the technique through a friend and researched FDA regulations before doing it myself. I decided to spare some details on the filleting and prep process. I did use a fillet knife. The whole "fast fillet" thing was just a joke. The important part here keep the fish cold, gut and bleed it quickly, then freeze it in accordance with the current FDA guidance for raw or undercooked fish. Here is an article with more details on it: www.webstauran....
I do want to acknowledge that I used the word "sashimi" a couple times in the video. This was NOT sashimi. It was a fisherman with mediocre (at best) knife skills prepping some edible raw salmon. The art of making sashimi is substantially more involved and vastly beyond my skills.

With your kayak , how long does it take you to get to your spot? How fast can you usually go when you are trying to get to your spot? Thanks

Totally depends. The biggest factors are wind and current. Typical is about 4-5 mph. With a current at my back I’ve hit 7. Against the current and wind I’ve been limited to 2 on a day with high winds and strong currents in the strait. So probably about 1.5-2 hours to get to this spot from Ballard.

    What reel do you use?

Okuma cw153d. I use 30 lb braid for the main line so I’m not too concerned about getting spoiled. Thanks for watching!

@@kayakfishingpnwdo you tie the braid directly to the flasher, or do you add a mono bumper?

Ya. About a 40 foot 25 lb mono leader between the braid and flasher. Braid is too thin to put in a clip (imo) and the stretch of mono helps fight the fish. I used all mono once and it was just too much drag and a lot of lost sensitivity.
Here is video of my trolling rig. It hasn’t changed really.
