First Attempt KAYAK Fishing for COHO Salmon in NEAH BAY -- With Grey Whales!
--------------------------------------------Disclaimer-------------------------------------------------------
Kayak fishing is always a bit dangerous. The Strait of Juan de Fuca is substantially more dangerous that Puget Sound. The currents are about twice as fast in some areas, the winds are roughly twice the magnitude, the shoreline is rocky and hard to land on, and weather rolls in quickly and violently. Most of the shoreline is property of the Makah Tribe, so you would only want to land for an absolute emergency anyway. Forecasts are also frequently wrong. Use extreme caution fishing this area (even in a boat!). I did.
--------------------------------------------The video--------------------------------------------------------
I managed to find a super calm day to hit the Neah Bay waters. It was a little bit of a sleepy day--not a ton of bait or fish but obviously possible to get a salmon or two still. This was my first experience in these waters, so I can likely improve. But first impression was that it wasn't substantially better fishing that the Seattle area for coho. That said, I got to see GREY WHALES! This is the last major marine animal for me to spot on my kayak. I'm down to lesser seen animals like elephant seals and dolphins but have now seen Minkes, Humpbacks, Greys (finally!), Orcas, Dahl's Porpoises, Harbor Porpoises, Harbor Seals, Sea Lions, Sea Otters, and River Otters.
----------------------------------------------Gear-----------------------------------------------------------------
-Rod: I don't recommend using the rod I had. I used it because I thought it would work ok for both salmon and lingcod. It was a semi-sturdy rod designed for shore casting for salmon. It does ok for shore lings as well. It did very poorly for both species from a boat though. Use a slow action rod that's at least 7 or 8' and can hold up to 20 lb line. I like the Ugly Stik 8' 3" downrigger rod, but there are a bunch of other options. (Conversely, I prefer a short, super fast action, sturdy rod for lings and was too stubborn to just use the halibut rod I had with me).
-Reel: most 200 series reels with a line counter should do. I like the Diawa Saltist but have had good luck with Okuma stuff too.
-Diver: 70' deep six diver. I only paid out 50' of line though
-Flasher: 10" Yakima Big Al. I think it's just the "Lime Bomb" version. Most look like they'd catch fish. I wouldn't over think the pattern. I basically look for a bunch of green, maybe some red, and a ton of flash.
-Plug: Brad's Cut Plug "Double Take" color. Not sure of the exact length, but the medium size. The big one should work too. And, again, if the bait shop is sold out of this pattern don't worry about it. Almost all of them look good.
I had no luck at speeds over 3.5 mph. That might cause the plug to spin too fast or look unnatural in some other way.

How I KAYAK Fish for KING SALMON on Seattle's Puget Sound (and why I do it this way)

Great day on the water! Landed a 29.5," 14lb king just at the mouth of the Duwamish river. Hit the water in MA 10 to catch a couple coho salmon! I wanted to see if a spinning flasher with a herring cut plug worked better than a trolling flasher with a hoochie. So, I dragged both behind my downrigger for about the same time in the same water. Honestly, both have their place! I like both rigs. I got 3 takes on the herring flasher rig and 2 on the hoochie. It's very difficult navigating using two kayaks or a tandem and having success with salmon. This time, I think we got a winning recipe! Fishing Challenge: Can I HANDLINE a SALMON from a KAYAK?

Ok. This is a little ridiculous, but still fun. A while ago I picked up a piece of driftwood off the surface of Puget Sound and carved it into a handline. I was thinking about how I could safely catch a fish with it and summer coho came to mind. So, I set out with the handline, a shallow diver, and a hoochie only to hook up with a probably-keeper sized blackmouth (resident king salmon). The sea...

      Never really thought about it. Basically, I use small reels and want to pack them with line so the fish can run. I’ve never had it break and it can be kinda dangerous to use really heavy line in a kayak because you won’t be able to break it in the event of a snag. I’d definitely respect the decision to use heavier. It would be less likely to bind. I’ll think about it more. Thanks for commenting!

    • @kayakfishingpnw
      @kayakfishingpnw 3 дні тому

      My main tips would be around safety. Stay in calm water. You didn't mention where you wanted to fish, but it's not a bad idea to do something like targeting carp, bass, etc. in warmer, calmer lakes to start. Stay within sight of other boats/kayakers and make sure to follow all laws. If you are on the Sound I would also definitely advise NOT anchoring. I've heard of people capsizing or sinking because a wave hits them when the anchor line is tight.

      Great question! This is me personally, but I really don’t look at it much. I mostly use it to know how deep the water is, upcoming depth/structure, and how fast I’m going. That rig, sadly, resides at the bottom of the pacific now so I can’t say for sure what the flasher was. We were using 70’ divers and only paying out 50’ of line to get the presentation to about 35’. I don’t think the exact flasher matters much, but something with some green and red should work. We were using the second largest size. I’d now recommend the largest. I was mostly afraid of there being too much drag in the water. It’s actually ok in my opinion.

Greenish colors with some red usually work. Slather it all up with herring or anchovy scent. 2.5-3.5 mph by points would be a good start. I’ve quickly learned by posting videos that everyone has a little different favorite coho tactic though. So my 2 cents.

    Damn dude... why don't you set the hook? You've got to do that every time you get a bite and I'm guessing that's likely why you lost the first two. Also, turn the kayak to the side, or turn it all the way around and fight the fish off the side or the front of the kayak since you don't have any leverage when sitting down. It also helps out tremendously when netting a fish in that you're not trying to net it behind you.

    • @kayakfishingpnw
      @kayakfishingpnw 13 днів тому

      Good points. I’ve been scolded about setting the hook whenever I’m on a chartered boat. They’ve claimed that it makes the whole in the fish’s mouth larger-increasing the odds of it shaking itself free. I also keep peddling, rather than facing the fish, to keep tension on. I’ve had a ton of fish make a super athletic run towards the boat and it’s tough to reel fast enough. Keeping the boat in motion is also common practice for boats, though probably less common for kayaks. I do face large chinook in areas where wild retention isn’t legal but that’s to avoid wearing the fish out too much. Tight lines! Thanks for commenting.

      @@kayakfishingpnw Never heard of that before with kings or silvers. Humpies have really soft mouths and gums, so yes it’s kind of hit or miss with them. Though oftentimes with them, they don’t even pop off of the downrigger clip, so they can be challenging either way. Also, I’m not saying to reef on the thing when setting the hook. All you need is a moderate tug and you’re good to go. I’ve seen more people lose fish when they don’t set the hook as opposed to when they do. So, I continue doing it that way. I also fish differently in that I turn the boat to the side of the downrigger that has the fish on, put it in neutral and then net the fish off the side of the boat. I’d rather be fighting and netting it off the side as opposed to the stern. And I’d rather fight the fish and let it do its thing as opposed to fighting the current and having to look out for other boats because I’m still in gear. I’ve seen way too many times where people get a bite, get greedy and leave it in gear, then their lines get tangled up or they get their net tangled off the stern on the prop, kicker motor, etc.

    Puncture the fishes brain with a hook? I've caught hundreds if not 1000 salmon/steelhead and have never seen that. Not even close... Have you?

    • @kayakfishingpnw
      @kayakfishingpnw 13 днів тому

      A charter captain mentioned it as a possibility. So, I think that’s what’s going on. I can say I’ve caught about 5-8 shakers that were hooked deeply through the roof of the mouth and were definitely dead. The combination of a large hook and small fish can be hazardous in my experience. It’s great that you haven’t had that happen. Do you use spoons? It happens to most for me with spoons because the hook is so far back and small fish go for it.

    • @ccarter0069
      @ccarter0069 13 днів тому

      @kayakfishingpnw Thank you for the reply! The 4 years that I lived in Michigan, I did troll spoons. I saw mortality from dragging a shaker around for a while and essentially drowning them, but that's it. For the last 11 years, I have fished Oregon/Washington. On the 360s, we catch 8-14 inch fish, and they don't die as long as you don't drag them around. That being said, those are 3.5 spinners with either a treble or 2 single hooks, not a spoon with a large siwash type hook.

    I notice you are not wearing a dry suit or anything. I’ve been too afraid to go out as everywhere I read people say it is dumb to go out without one. What do you have to say about this?

    • @kayakfishingpnw
      @kayakfishingpnw 14 днів тому

      The most common rule of thumb is to wear one any time the air temp and water temp sum to less than 120. The exception is that you should wear one any time the water temp is under 60. Since our water is typically 55-58, it’s technically always dry suit weather. That said lots of kayakers go without in the summer because it is miserably, maybe even dangerously hot to wear one on hot days. There are a couple kayak rental companies in the area and they send dozens of people out on the sound everyday with no dry suit, so it a definitely not uncommon. If you’re thinking about getting into it, I’d recommend starting by renting a kayak and seeing how comfortable you are. They give a helpful safety talk too. I also take a ton of precautions and know how I react in the cold water. Thanks for watching and commenting!

    Would you recommend a diver as the most effective way of trolling without a downrigger? As a paddle kayak angler, I've mostly stuck to mooching, but haven't had any success yet this year.

    • @kayakfishingpnw
      @kayakfishingpnw 16 днів тому

      I’ve had success mooching for them but only in high density areas. Divers make sense, but I did tangle with another boat’s line with one. So I’d just make sure to have some space if you’re going to use one.

Point defiance, deception pass, tacoma narrows, to name a few. Not many kayak anglers go there. Hot Summer days I won't use a dry suit in the sound. Occassionaly I'll wear dry pants.
