Maybe due to the bad type of coolant...its also good to know that the coolant should be silicate free like motul factory line.. Not motocool! Despite its recommended... Had to take the engine out from the bike and change the balance shaft, mechanical water seal and all gaskets. Almost 1000 Euro repair. I still wonder if that was from a bad work when they rebuilt my engine

I haven't try to replace it myself but I bought my Versys (manufactured 2013) by 2016...it's leaked for 1st time just about 21,000km of mileage ( finish warranty 20,000km). Now 65,000km it's leaked for 2nd time. I wonder if it's common problem ?
Hi there. It is just something that forms part of your maintenance in the same way you need to replace tyres, brake pads, chain etc. Once you do it a couple of times, it becomes very easy.

Hi Reid. No, but my bike tends to overflow a bit. Make.sure you bike is level when you check your coolant and keep it just above the minimum. Don't fill it to max or you'll get coolant overflow.
I just disassembled my water pump on my 2009 Ninja 650R. I had a leaking oil seal. After removing the mech seal and while cleaning up the center where the seals go I noticed that there is some pitting. Bad enough that I would have to remove a significant amount of material to smooth it out. The pitting is only on the section where the oils seal was. Should I replace the plate or put some RVT on before I slap the new seal in? What are your thoughts?
Hi Jeff. I'm surprised there's putting. Possibly had just water instead of coolant mix at some point in it's life. I think is should be ok to reuse but maybe buy a new plate in the mean time? I have to trace my seals every 15000 km or so so it's about every 3 years. Replace the plate the next time you do the seal and if it does cause any issues, you'll have the plate ready to go.

Its on the oil side of the seal, only where the oil seal touches the plate...anywho as well I just noticed that whoever was in here last put the oil seal in backwards. Hi mate. I got it from Masters Hardware which has closed down so don't have a link for you sorry It's a 1/4 turn tap system if that's any help. You could use a large socket or a piece of timber with a hole cut into it.
Hello again! my er6n came back from the mechanic, water pump seals are replaced. Also, he put a new oil filter. After 40kilometeres I noticed the oil light started flickering. Any idea what kind of problem I have?
Hi Karlo. Check your oil level before and after a ride. Remember the bike has to be level. Oil level should be halfway between min and max but can changes slightly depending on how much lands up in the head. Otherwise take it straight back to your mechanic!
@@TheDeepPlanet Thank you for reply, oil window is 70percent covered when bike is leveled, maybe its overfilled? I will try again with new filter and oil I still can see some sludge because antifreeze was mixed with oil when the seal was bad. If that doesn't work I will take it back to him. I did not have this problem when the seal was bad.. :)
@@TheDeepPlanet agree, problem is before i drove it to mechanic there was plenty of sludge (oil light never came on). After waterpump fix, back to original exhaust, oil and filter change, 40-60km (30miles) i noticed flickering oil light. damn these engines i love science behind it but there is always some new problem i need to learn about it :D
I have a 97 kawasaki vulcan 80O and im about to change the water pump mechanical seal.. Do i have to also remove the engine oil...beside the coolant? Or just the coolant? Thanks.
I changed the seals and there is still some oil seeping out the weeping hole...any thoughts? Someone else commented that the seepage will happen and the new seal needs break in time? 10mile of driving. If the oil continues to seep after the breakin period, will the shaft need changing out? Any thoughts would be appreciated...thanks
Hi Jason. I've not had any sign of oil after replacing the seal and O rings. I normally give everything a good wipe down before reassembly. I have done this about 5 times now and the only time I had a problem was when the rubber part of the mechanical oil seal folded over on the shaft because if some corrosion that I didn't remove (I mention this in the video) you may need to pull it all apart and try to work out what is causing the leak. Was there ever oil leaking from the camshaft area before you put the parts back on? I say this because when I was cleaning all the parts , there was a steady drip of oil coming out of the drive shaft area. I wiped it down several times before I put the parts back. I was just wondering if the leak from the shaft area was normal? Maybe an inner engine seal needs replacing too and not just the mechanical seal? I cleaned the parts really well.
I think I have a diff issue going on here because there is a visible drip from the shaft area when the parts are removed. The is no longer a coolant leak issue, just oil it’s dripping from the camshaft
Sorry to hear that mate. The bolt is very difficult to get out but it is possible. You'll need an Ez out (just Google "bolt extraction tool"). They should have them at the hardware store or automotive accessories shop. You'll also want a decent set of HSS drill bits and a steel punch to mark the centre of the snapped bolt. Mark the bolt, drill a pilot hole and then drill a hole about half the diameter of the bolt. Use the bolt extraction tool by hand and you'll get it out. Don't use the bolt extractor on a drill as it will break the tool. Good luck! Feel free to message me if you have any questions.

Also what are your thoughts are on living with this leak and filling the oil back up every 3 months? It’s an expensive fix beyond my capability but the leak doesn’t appear to affect anything else? So as long as the oil stays full No problems?
If your balance shaft is off and has caused the seals to fail. It could.get a lot worse. Also, not great for the environment to have engine oil leaking. Hopefully it's not.too expensive to fix. I personally don't enjoy riding when I know something is wrong with my Bike (but I'm a little OCD)
Found out I may have to change the balancer shaft seals or the shaft itself and that’s a lengthy process... Do you think stop leak in the oil will work for this since it’s a dripping leak? Or will I have to do the whole shaft replacement
It's vital to mention that the oil seal should be pushed in gently and in specific position and not full to the bottom

Possibly...it is known issue with that motor... If the balance Shaft is off, it impacts that seal...

Possible the coolant/sludge is affecting the oil level sensor...

That sounds like you may have an issue there. I never noticed any oil leaking from around the shaft when I did the seal replacement...😳

It’s an expensive fix, worth more than the bike. I’m better off buying a gently used newer bike off Craigslist
