  • A speedy little project from a few weeks back. Jo's Parents were in need of a heavy base for their parasol, the perfect project for that old offcut of oak sleeper that I have been tripping over for months!

This one is from a while back. Before the timber framing tools, sharp chisels and planes arrived! Rustic, but still did the job just fine. :-)

The Restoration Couple I like the fact it’s the old tools - that’s all I have so shows I could do it (maybe). Love the channel and the content. Thank you for sharing

I have to say, some people binge on tv shows on Netflix or game of thrones, but myself and my mrs honestly binge on the restoration couple videos, eagerly awaiting the next episode I can sit down after a long day at work and watch and play your videos one after the other as they are educational and enjoyable to watch as they are amazingly put together and edited videos, which inspires my own renovation projects, I am currently re-watching your bathroom and loft Reno’s, they say to never meet you inspirational diy hero’s but if your ever at a home renovation show etc would be great to get a coffee & you opinions on some Reno’s projects I currently have underway, and if your can give me a shout out on one of your episodes that would be legendary, many thanks in advance David your top fan 😎 also I have always wondered what part of the uk your based?

I often see you using that cheap electric planer, and giving it hell for leather. How's it holding up and how often do you change the blades? As always, a pleasure to see your endeavours.

Never changed them! I only use it for rough work and an occasional door adjustment. Anything more finished I use hand planes. It does the job when needed but no doubt superior options available!

Hey Tim, nice little vid, what was the stain you used? i have recently built a retaining wall out of softwood sleepers and i have not treated them yet, just struggling to find a good decent stain, any tips/advice or what i should look out for?

I did a video part week on the osmo product we like. It is however best suited to smooth wood so might not be best if yours are rough sawn.

The Restoration Couple ah ok thanks. Do you have any suggestions on what I could use?

Any shed/fence product is usually designed for sawn timber. Used Cuprinol on the playhouse here and went on well, you get what you pay for so worth getting the 10 year stuff. Other option would be a clear or stain that can be sprayed, they are much thinner but go on to sawn wood well.

I imagine they are treated already if softwood so anything you do is more for appearance I guess.
