Dr. amina wadud's Qur'an and Woman: Rereading the Sacred Text | What the Patriarchy?!
Вставка
- Опубліковано 27 сер 2024
- In this episode, I discuss (not review) Dr. amina wadud's book, Qur'an and Woman: Re-reading the Sacred Text from a Woman's Perspective, highlighting how patriarchal biases have been historically read into or imposed on the Qur'an.
CORRECTION: The second verse involving nushuz that I'm mentioning is supposed to be 4:128, not 124.
P.S. I recognize I speak too fast! I apologize - that's my default mode but I'm working on it! In the meantime, you can change the speed as you watch the video. Click the "settings" icon and then click "Playback speed," which is currently set to "Normal." Choose your preference and inshaAllah that helps! And also, please note that captions are available (I've edited them from the automatic ones so they should be correct.)
Thank you so much for uploading. I am attempting to understand or make distinction between Islam, patriarchy, religious abuse and movements such like Hibz Tahrir.
Thanks so much for watching! Making that distinction can be so hard when you've grown up with the idea that Islam and patriarchy are the same, and if something doesn't sound patriarchal, is it even Islamic, then!
Something i have been wanting to hear and understand for a lomg time
Such a relief. Looking forward to more discussions from you.
I already know I'm gonna get obsessed with you(r vlogs)! Thank you so much for spreading this knowledge in such an accessible way!
Aww, Sarah! Thank you so much for watching! Please share widely as well!
What the Patriarchy?! I literally am spamming everyone with your channel now 😂
@@sarahelmassaoudi6562 That's the way to do it :D
When you're discussing "nushuz" in Surah Nisa, I believe the second ayah is 4 : 128, not 4 : 124. I'm commenting so hopefully it'll help anyone else who might be confused.
Thank you so much for this discussion!! I really benefited from it and look forward to more of your videos!
Oops! Thank you - I didn't catch that. Def 4:128 for men's nushuz!
You are on fireeeee!!! I love your vlog!!!! Salam from Mexico ;)
Wa alaikumus salaam from the U.S.! Thank you for watching :)
Thank you very much for doing this Vlog. You are doing a great service.
Thank you for watching, Lisa!
ooooo I'm so excited to learn more stuff :D thanks for sharing!
Thank you, please do more videos like this, they are changing the status quo.
Aww, thank you so much for watching! I do plan to! Just not as consistent with it as I'd like. Comments like these help
I used to be very conflicted within myself being a Muslim woman and a feminist. I thought that I couldn’t be both, and a lot of Islamic scholars preach against mainstream feminism, like it’s a war against Islam. And then one of the names of Allah is ‘Al- Adl: the Just’. How can Allah stand for justice and stand for the subjugation of women? My research led me to the book ‘Qur’an and Woman’. Thank you for your narrative on this book. P.S I’m new here and you just gained a subscriber.
Aww, thank you, RSA, for the subscribe and for engaging! I agree - I can't imagine God being hateful towards anyone who simply wants justice, when that's what we're required to do anyway in the Qur'an! I'm glad you found us!
When I first read this book, it was a time I was really in need. I mean I needed to be convinced that Allah does not hate us, women, and we are all equal in His judgement. I was so happy with the way Amina Wadud explained the Quran from a female perspective. This book meant so much to me, it was the first book I taught in the lectures I gave during my PhD. Thank you for this video and thanks a lot to Amina Wadud @The Lady Imam, for writing this precious book.
Same! I remember reading it first in i think 2009 and being so blown away. I love that it's accessible so those of us who REALLY need that knowledge and liberation can benefit from it. A good friend of mine is trying to get it translated int our native language, Pashto! InshaAllah it'll be a successful effort!
Pls send me a pdf version in arabic if u have it but its okay in English
You can look up to see if one exists.
@@WhatthePatriarchy there is in both languages but only the english ver is available as a pdf :((
Past male scholars read their male bias into quran , and you guys read your feminist bias into the Quran.
You say that like that's a bad thing.
I hate males
Yall aint the standards
@@WhatthePatriarchywhy is that not a bad thing?
Because all humans have biases and as long as we don’t make our biases the only reality and impose it on others (like patriarchy does, making rules based off of men’s opinions), we can’t escape our biases and nothing is wrong with that. Plus, nothing wrong with feminist interpretations - they’re more justice-focused!
Thank you for this. Please do more!
Working on them
I am deeply humbled by your accolades and just in awe of your brilliance. Thank you
Again YOU might want to introduce yourself at some point lol
Lol. Yes, will do!
Here to stan.
Heart!
thank you 💕
You're welcome!
Thank you for this information. My question is , "why for 14 centuries Quran was not interpreted by any woman?what were women doing for so long?" "If Quran is not gender biased, then it should've eradicated all patriarchy right after its revelation, therefore allowing women to excel in the early periods of islam, then why still most of the heroes of islam are mentioned to be men in history books?" "Is it because the history is written by non-arabs who had patriarchal cultures?"
If possible please cover this in a video that who wrote the history, which part of world they belonged to, and what were the Muslim women right after the advent of islam doing that they didnt come forward to challenge the wrong/biased history being written.
Have a good day
Your question has an assumption in it that's not accurate. Where did you get the idea from that women haven't interpreted the Qur'an for 14 centuries? Your sources might not be correct or reliable if you've got that from elsewhere.
@@WhatthePatriarchy
You're right. I don't have any particular knowledge or extensive research on this. My assumption is based on the prevalent trends in our society about interpretations and Hadith books. Almost all the widely accepted books are written by men. If you could mention a few female authors from early periods of Islam, e.g near the times of Tabari , or any related books, I'd like to read them.
Awesome video so far. I would only recommend that you consider talking a bit more slowly, so that people can fully absorb what you're sharing.
Thank you so much for your support, Jthekkumthala! :) I'm trying very hard to speak more slowly - and will make a bigger effort for future ones. I hope you have captions on, though, because a part of why I write the captions is to make sure people can read if they can't follow because of my speed!
Oh! Jthekkumthala, I've just learned that UA-cam lets you change the speed as you watch the video. Click the "settings" icon and then click "Playback speed," which is currently set to "Normal." Choose your preference and see if that helps. I'm trying harder in the future ones!
Thanks so much!!!
You're welcome, Mary! Thanks for watching!
Please post your bio and introduce yourself. Thank you for this!
Will do!
Thank you. Fascinating, looking forward to learning more. One favor, please speak a little slower.
Thanks so much for watching, PatziaCorazon! I promise to make a better effort to speak more slowly - in the meantime, please note that captions are available on all my videos so you can follow if that helps a little!
You inspire me
Thank you. I am a new reverted Muslim, and I automatically saw the patriarchy embedded into the lifestyle. One of the first things I said was that the hijab is NOT in the Quran. I just want Peace and Love from Allah❤❤❤
Yeah, I know so many convert/revert women who struggle with Islam after converting because of all the misinformation out there about what "Islam" is and whatnot. Blessings to you! Just remember: if it doesn't sound ethical, it's not Islamic either.
Do you even know what hijab means? You could say the word hijab isn't in the Quran used for the headscarf. But Khimar? Jilbab? Do read the Quran.
!!!❤❤
Are you a Muslim
Is my religious identity not clear in this channel?
@@WhatthePatriarchy it says you had Islamic studies if you’re an atheist why would you take that
You should read more books.
