  • I set some BIG goals for 2024 and I'm already experiencing set backs. In this video I'll explain what's happened. Set backs are normal. What's important is how we work through them.

Best thing I've done for my running fitness and my R2R and Rim2River runs, is to start mountain biking 3yrs ago. I thought I was fit and strong as a runner, and as a 57yr old, until I started flogging a heavy mountain bike on the same trails that I run on. About 7wks after beginning to ride, I ran another mid-August R2R, and I was a completely different Canyon runner, especially on the climb out, which I run... I don't walk it, and I don't use poles. Riding is also an absolute blast. I got to re-learn (I used to ride in college, in the late 80's) the sport, I learned how to build/repair/tune my own bike(s), I got to feed that teenage speed demon that's still in me, an my daughter, who's no 24, also joined me. We even did another daddy-daughter R2R in Aug '22. We've since added Spin, and she goes several times a week. That's absolute murder, and I love it. I'm currently back to downhill skiing, and I have quickly learned that running legs, and mountain biking legs, DO NOT translate to ski legs!
To be clear, I don't jump the bike, and I don't ride it in bike parks, or on "features," or down crazy stuff. I have no intention of going over the bars and breaking wrists, collar bones, ribs, etc. I just ride it up and down the trails that I run... So I'm getting a ton of steep climbing, and a lot of fun, fast, descents.
JT, since you like to do your research and try stuff for your own longevity, may I suggest that you look into all of the issues that your running shoes, and your heel strike, foot dorsi-flexed style of running are causing. I know that's abrasive to say, BUT you're now injured and dealing not only with the injury, but the down time that it causes. Modern, thickly padded, running shoes, cause atrophy of the feet and lower legs, and remove the sensory activity that should normally be created, which causes higher levels of impact through the foot, ankle, knee, hip, lower back, etc. The atrophy and the higher impact lead to........injury.
Since you're down to just walking, this would be a fantastic time to transition into shoes like Vivo Barefoot Primus Trail, Xero Shoes, Merrell Trail Gloves, Vibram FiveFingers, etc. because you can rebuild and transition, without risk of injury. And before you start running again, and just take off heel striking and dorsi-flexing in minimalist shoes that are not designed for that incorrect style, go to a grassy park, and trot around in bare feet, or in your socks, paying attention to how your body actually knows how to run correctly, when it's not in thickly padded shoes. Let that barefoot style become your new muscle memory, and then run that way in the minimalist shoes. 6 months from now, you'll be a completely different running athlete, and a year from now, be amazed at your athletic progress.
Okay, enough from me. I'll show myself out!

Thanks for taking the time to share your in depth knowledge and experience. Sounds like you're really enjoying life and working on your own longevity. That's awesome! I've actually been barefoot or Vibram FiveFingers on a daily basis for a little over 2 years now. I've run a fair amount in minimalist shoes. Just not on the trails. Been wearing HOKA's on the trail. More barefoot has helped quite a lot. In my last doctor visit he explained that the metatarsal for that particular toe is just slightly longer which causes that part of my foot to impact the ground just a bit before the rest of my foot.
He explained that it was likely going to happen no matter what shoes I was wearing. Certainly not something anyone wants to hear. I'm going to keep looking for ways to deal with it and be patient. Thanks again for your thoughts and recommendations here. I appreciate it.

@@JTJaredTaylor I won't belabor the point further than this next couple of statements, and I'll encourage you to set up a video camera and get some video of you trotting along at a pace you can talk at, in bare feet, on any surface (pavement/mowed grass/a high school or college track/etc) both from head on, and from the side. In bare feet, your brain will not let you run incorrectly. What you'll discover, is that the first thing that touches the ground, IS NOT the second toe or it's connected bones. What touches down first, is the outside of the foot, just rearward of the 2 or 3 outermost toes. This pad of the foot touches first, in order to map the terrain and transmit conditions to the brain, in real time, so that the brain can respond in nano-seconds to correct balance/foot position/body position. The next thing to touch the ground is the heel, and this is down to stretch the calf muscle, like a rubber band, and load energy into it, which is about to be returned into the stride. The final thing to touch is the big toe joint and that second toe, as they pass beneath the center line of the body, and they are used to push off, releasing the spring loaded calf and then the leg folds upward, the knee moves forward, and the cycle starts again. You can prove this to yourself. And you can prove that you are cable of doing it. Then watch that bit of video of you running in the Hoka's, with the foot dorsi-flexed upward, exposing the heel, and then the heel strikes the ground first, transmitting all that impact up through the leg. The brain has no idea what pressures are involved, and it has no way of correcting for balance. This is how "runners" get injured. And what do doctors say? "Wear this boot. Buy thicker padded shoes. Of course you're injured, you're a runner." Take a moment and watch this video by Dr. Mark Cucuzzella: ua-cam.com/video/zSIDRHUWlVo/v-deo.html It shows what I'm describing, and he explains it extremely well. And no, he's not suggesting or promoting running without shoes. He's simply demonstrating for the camera, as I'm suggesting that you do for yourself, with your own camera.
I hope you're able to get back to you great lifestyle an your train soon, and I wish you all the best. If you care to stop by my channel, you'll see my playlist for my series on HTO and what I've done in the last 12 months.
      All the best JT!!

I'm sorry you got injured, it happens when you're active and getting older. I started getting debilitating injuries when I was about your age. Backpacking in the old days with mountaineering gear trashed my knees and feet. Cycling for me was the answer as I already enjoyed it. On vacation recently the hotel had a Peloton which is a very nice machine, I didn't create an account I just listened to music and let my watch guide my workouts, expensive but I might just get one. The good news is there are so many options to getting your heart rate up, you definely got this.

Thank you so much. Yeah after I made this video I decided maybe it's not a good idea to be walking so much with the boot so I switched to a stationary bike. I appreciate your encouragement. Thanks again and thanks for sharing your own experience.

I worked with an older dentist (late sixties) that rode a bike religiously, well one day he hit something in the road and went flying. He was hurt pretty badly, so I think a stationary bike is a better option as we age.

Sorry to hear about your setback. When I first saw you were going to walk with the boot I got concerned. I twisted my ankle at Christmas time and walking funny made other things hurt. At the end of your walk you mentioned the same thing. My opinion is you can cause problems by compensating for another problem…good luck.😊

Thanks Sally. I appreciate your view on this and encouragement. Shortly after I posted this video I decided maybe it's not a good idea to be walking so much with the boot so I switched to a stationary bike. I'm going to stick with that for a while. At least until after the doctor gives me the "go ahead" without so much hesitation. Thanks again.

Elliptical is a good way to get cardio in with no impact to your feet and joints.
