calo9000 He was diagnosed in 1917 as he was about to send his father a letter about moving out and living the life he wanted... the irony:( the other ironic part is Kafka always worried he might be sick. But yes the Metamorphosis was published in 1915 so around two years before his diagnosis
As a psychiatrist, I'm simply amazed at the extraordinary profundity of Kafka's psychoanalytic prowess. The novel is certainly, at least in part, a reflection of the writer's own life. Gregor's predicament is a personification of the Kafka's own troubled life portrayed with such masterful skill that one can't choose but only marvel at it.
The way Kafka was writing is very intriguing to me. His writing is very simple and seems easy to understand but every word, action, place and figure has a deeper meaning you have to unveil.
The nicest people are mostly treated in a bad way and no one appreciate their help and positivity and as long as they stop giving they get hated on and get isolated..
True. You can see the nature of a person when they can't get what they want from the others. The moment you stop giving to them, then they will show their own characters.
Also it can be interpreted that Grete, the daughter experiences through a metamorphosis especially at the final part of the parents noticing her being a beautiful young woman who should be seeking a husband now.
It’s kinda sad how (at least in my interpretation) Gretas fate might be similar to Gregors. I mean the fact that the first thing her parents think of when they realize she’s “all grown up” is of her finding a husband to support them, is very telling. Perhaps she too will end up the victim of her family’s pressure to care for them
@@paalaasengstubbrud3524Glad I’m not the only one who caught on with that. Legit think Kafka was dropping a subtle hint that Grete will also “transform” into a bug and be treated the same way Gregor was
For me it focuses on alienation. Gregor Samson in not only physically alienated in his situation but also alienated in his true nature. One part that suggests that Gregor Samson is alienated is when he saw himself change into monstrous bug, even in that situation he needs to go to his work and take the train. That is, society pushing him to follow the vicious cycle of life leaving the true and genuine things Gregor have.
From my point of you, the family is the society and the moment you are not anymore of a value they will disrespect you, invalidate you, treat you bad till you "decide" to escape by death or any other means. That's why we should always put ourselves as a priority and don't live with the illusion of unconditional love. Love oneself first 🥇
It's a metaphor, actually Kafka stated that Gregor had been a failure at work and he became a jobless person or probably he lost his physical ability to do any sort of work means he had no access to earning money thus he became an unbearable creature, not even a considerable human to his family. There's no such fixed explanation or reference but this theory is quite plausible, I guess
My view of the book is that the Metamorphosis of Gregor Zamza is the mental state of Franz Kafka himself in relationship with his family especially with his father. Kafka felt like he was a bug and deserved to be crushed. What makes this novel so unique and timeless is that maybe we can feel like Gregor in our lives, so meaningless, so powerless. Thank you Max Brod that the world is able to read Kafka and this masterpiece.
It's a crystal clear that the core message of this story is to showcase the ugly face of the materialistic life in Franz Kafka community in that time., Once he turns into bug they treat him badly with tough and ugly way despite he's their son and he has no fault for being bug. They main character her is his Father which represents the " community " & His Boss which represents the " Capitalism " both of them don't give any attention to Gregor and instead to thinking to helping him to bringing him to human form the boss skipped and his father start attacking him because they are looking at him as machine or animal irrespective that he's human. I believe Gregor wish to be a bug because he found himself valueless and he working like any animal or insect to secure his family requirements and he didn't find any form of appreciation. That's why the End came with the death of Gregor and the rest of his family will enjoy their life without feel any regret or sadness about Gregor' Death. This's our materialistic life. This has nothing to do with materialism, its more about too much work and Few rewards, he maintains his family but at what cost, ok maybe the problem wasn't few rewards, he got to mantain 4 People, well three, he was a bug, i think its more about how too much effort can make you miserable, like the life of many Japanese people, and yes it is a problem of capitalism, im not gonna lie, capitalism is not perfect, its the system that w It is the system that works best but its not perfect at all

The concept of someone turning into a bug seems really childish and something you’d see in a kids book. And yet this is the most depressing book I’ve seen in a while
I remember taking world literature in college. This was one of many stories in the book that was assigned. I never had to read this for class, but I was bored and read it anyways. I’ll always be glad I did. It struck me as so bizarre back then. Today, I appreciate it so much more given the time period it was written. Genius piece of literature.
I read the story and I believe that the sister could have done so much more. She is the only person who is closest to Gregor. Yet, she didn’t think of asking simple questions like “can you do tis or do that” to know whether he can understand her or not. Then when we approach near the end of the story. Gregor’s father said they don’t know if Gregor can really understand them and this really is what annoys me. The sister could’ve prevented that situation from happening. Who knows, at least Gregor won’t have to suffer and die slowly like that. This is a bad ending for sure
Interesting that they are connected by the theme of family turning against family and/or seeing family as a burden and obligation in a time of crisis. Note: Weisrl's guilt at wishing he weren't responsible for his father's needs, witnessing another father and son when the son fought the father for a scrap of food, etc.
This is exactly the story of my father, ultimately he died a year ago, though I never treated him badly my grand ma and mom kind of did,I miss him a lot,I can't live without him,it hurts a lot
This is one of my favorite books of all time. Just to amuse myself during the darker bits, I always picture Gregor in my mind as an exceptionally cute, though enormous, bug. Of course I’ve never been scared of bugs so they’re all kind of cute to me. Anyway, you’ve basically made him as cute here as he always is in my mind 😂.
I see it as a story of a man transforming from his sad life, whereas he was used and overrun by those who claimed they loved him. Him metamorphing is his changing from his previous life, not only in actions, but in mind, in heart, and everything, to metamorph and be free. Metamorphosis consists of an insect literally melting into a soup and being rebuit using marginal discs, forming into something completely different. The people could not stand him because they could not use him as they once did. He was too different to go back to those old ways. He dies free of them and that's not a bad thing.
It's interesting that no explanation for Gregor's transformation is provided. The point of the story is what happens afterward, so it doesn't really matter how or why he got that way.
It's a crystal clear that the core message of this story is to showcase the ugly face of the materialistic life in Franz Kafka community once he turn into bug they treat him with tough and ugly way despite he is their son. @@abazaabdelmageid774 U also interpreted my thoughts in a composed manner. I was of the same view that writer is actually criticizing the materialistic society and was quite wondered that why no one is reflecting the actual interpretation in comment section untill I found your comment.
I think the fact that it happens out of the blue is Kafka's way of illustrating that tragedy that dehumanizes us or ruins us as functioning members of a society (or maybe just, when it becomes clear that to us and all others, we are worthless) isn't always tethered to a cause. It can just happen abruptly. You might wake up one morning with crippling depression or find yourself paralyzed from the waist down, or you might just decide that in a rebellious act, you refuse to go to work or do anything productive.
I just read this and oh my God. Gregor died alone and unloved. But on the bright side, his family left and went on their own journeys to start a new living, isnt that kind of good? Also is the apple being stuck to Gregor's body a symbolism for something?
I think (just how I see it) the apple is like his feeling of uselessness to his family and it rots away inside him and his due to his condition he has no hope of removing it so it just remains
It's never said that he transformed into an insect. The German 'Ungeziefer' can also mean unclean animal, like a rat or a mouse, the way you see the metamorphisis is up to you, there are some people who claim he never actually changed and that it's all in his head.
the shit in the story is such a real deal to humanity, and for some reason people natural tendency is to ignore it and interestingly enough, some people can't even see it. (like WTF!) are we even conscious and if yes what's the damn use of it anyway?!
I see this book as followed: once you've lost your ability to provide for other people, they will stop providing for you. Cause why would they help you everyday if they get no use from you? You will become a problem that needs to be removed from their lives and once you do, they will be relieved. It's portraying the life of someone who can't contribute to the society and how their family could react, first they are feeling sorry for him ( his sister noticing he doesn't like milk, his mother not wanting to remove his furniture) but they become more self oriented over time until they don't have the space for him anymore. A truly wonderful tragedy
exactly, very tragic. I guess that's where "human values" and "religion" play a part. Because if someone believes they'll go to hell if they abandon their disabled wife or father... then they'll certainly take care of that person no matter what, the same goes for human feelings like guilt and sympathy. You wouldn't want to give up on someone you love or at least feel sympathy for.
As in Frankenstein, with some thinking, we can atribute monstrosity to the doctor and humanity to the monster...here in Metamorphosis we can say that the insects or parasites are his family members and Gregor is the human. It is not a thorough observation and it can be made better, but I think it expresses my point in a comprehensible way.
I would be surprised that they would think Gregor became an insect (not sure how that would be physically possible) rather than that the big insect ate him

Maybe reminds me of father. He was thin, very intelligent and he was a teacher. All my grandparents (6) were teachers and dad too. Then the job of a teacher got low and was not well paid back then at least here, he changed his job into an engineer, it was ok paid and he worked for like 10 years in Russia, to gain money to save me from birth. He had a quarrel with mom and because of their quarrel I lost my twin. I was hospitalized for 80 days and dad worked hard to have money for my health. He returned after 10 years with a car, gave us a lot of food from Russia and we were happy. My big sister was studying in Romania from dad’s money, they were little yet she still wanted more money cause the books and all cost a lot. Dad and mom gave her money. Dad gave me money too for school and care, yet his job smelled a lot and came home with a horrible smell a lot, he suddenly became addicted to drinking. He drank and drank for 20 years everyday, his car is broken for years and can’t buy new one or repair, he became very fat, no one knowing why he started drinking, he became violent because of his drunk habits. He had no friends, no job to his liking, mom hated him, sister broke the family relationship with us because of a man, she changed herself for a man and left family forever. I too, was alone, dad too. I tried to help dad, tried to talk with him, spend time with him, he couldn’t think straight and pushed me and became violent. I only saw him cry only once, he in front of me, I asked why, but no answer until now. I tried my best to change him, but he didn’t want to.
I cried horribly, because, when my Father got stroke three years ago, I once ever thought about how become a burden and useless he is to my family, even almost everyone of my big families didn't want to see us in my house, as they said "I can't see your Father condition". Then, I read this, and really feel guilty about all what happen to him. I wish I am making this story up, but what I write here is real, I think I have destroyed my father feelings.
I don’t know if this was the point of Kafkas work, but I think it’s quite sad and reflective of modern society that Gregors primary concern when he wakes, is not that he has turned into a literal insect, but instead that he is late for work. Very insightful of Kafka to perhaps for-see how people will place work and gaining some form of societal or material success, over their internal and external wellbeing.
Why everyone is cussing over the family? Well there could be have been times when gregor was a kid and his family made a sacrifice to make him a grown man from a kid. Yeah, there is a fault with his family but just imagine from their perspective when they saw a bug so close living with them and couldn't understand what he spoke. I m not saying that his family is a saint and did not make any mistake. I am just sharing a different perspective to view the situation. Don't be emotional, its just a analysis.:) Atlast, things i learned: - You have to be responsible for your actions, live how you want to live(taking rational actions) so that later you don't find any way to feel regret or blame someone for your life. - don't be nice and expect good things to happen in return. Just be kind if you want and it totally fine if you don't want to but don't hope for something in return. - Work hard but at the same time think smartly.
It's an analogy for internal feelings or beliefs that conflict with expectations from society and/or those close to you. Even if he manages a small change or exacts his will with one 'leg', the rest just continue or 'go through the motions' by default. It's just the easiest thing to do: the path of least resistance. He's recognizing himself moving through his life just doing things automatically, even if they conflict with who he really is or how he feels. .. He no longer finds meaning in what he does and it feels foreign to him, imposed, not authentic. All visual references to Gregor's appearance are about his identity and it's non-conformity. An insect because of disgust. Society is disgusted. Gregor is disgusted. Gregor's struggles to get out of bed are really: his struggle to exert his identity and act on what he believes in. He manages to 'get out of bed' finally and some doors are opened. He is revealed as what he really is, what he really thinks and values. Everyone in his life reacts poorly when seeing the authentic Gregor. The more aware that people are of Gregor, the more problems there are. His existence, who he really is, brings complication to others' lives. It's only natural for them to be adverse to Gregor. Crawling on the ceiling is Gregor's preference, it's what he wants. Gregor is being himself. His sister recognizes the bed is actually a burden to Gregor. His family insists to keep the bed there "for Gregor", or else they would feel complicit or enabling of Gregor's abnormality. The bed is there to constantly remind Gregor of what he "should" be doing, that he is different and should just conform. They lack empathy for Gregor, they don't understand him. If they were to accept and embrace Gregor, it would create problems for them. Their peers would treat them like Gregor is treated. Gregor dies and everyone else moves on "normally". Less burdened by the troubles brought on by society, in response to those like Gregor. I tried to make this as general as possible. You can apply this analogy to so many experiences.
I've written already, the trip could only be made feasible by a lie and of lying I'm afraid, not like a man of honour, but like a pupil. -letters to milena, F kafka
But whoever thought of changing Gregor in to a cute lady bird beetle? The very purpose of Kafka's writing of this story is lost in this cartoon. Cuteness and Kafka don't exist together.
metamorphosis is about learned helplessness of the family, injury of the son, resentment of the family of the now crippled son that they have to take care of in turn and their relief that he died/committed suicide to relief his family of the burden of returning the favor of taking care of him once he realized his family held no love for him without merit
I was assigned the metamorphosis and life of pi for summer reading for ap English in highschool. I read both of them the weekend before school started and absolutely hated the metamorphosis.

It is even more mournful when one realizes that him becoming a cockroach represents the author being diagnosed with tuberculosis.
or depression its all how u read it
calo9000 He was diagnosed in 1917 as he was about to send his father a letter about moving out and living the life he wanted... the irony:( the other ironic part is Kafka always worried he might be sick. But yes the Metamorphosis was published in 1915 so around two years before his diagnosis
the story was written in late 1912, and he only found out about his tuberculosis in 1917.
That's not true. He was diagnosed with tuberculosis years after this story was published.
The book was written before he was diagnosed with tuberculosis
As a psychiatrist, I'm simply amazed at the extraordinary profundity of Kafka's psychoanalytic prowess. The novel is certainly, at least in part, a reflection of the writer's own life. Gregor's predicament is a personification of the Kafka's own troubled life portrayed with such masterful skill that one can't choose but only marvel at it.
Kafka was beyond ordinary
@@preciousamaechi689yeah one might even call him
Extraordinary
The way Kafka was writing is very intriguing to me. His writing is very simple and seems easy to understand but every word, action, place and figure has a deeper meaning you have to unveil.
The nicest people are mostly treated in a bad way and no one appreciate their help and positivity and as long as they stop giving they get hated on and get isolated..
Exactly.
@The Sentry but not gregor
Perhaps she too will end up the victim of her family’s pressure to care for them
Similarly, the last sentences describes how she “stretches her body” just like how Gregor stretches his legs in the beginning
@@paalaasengstubbrud3524 omg i didnt think of that
@@paalaasengstubbrud3524Glad I’m not the only one who caught on with that.

This story is a reflection of franz Kafka's life.
@@siddheshpathak9181 It's both. This story is about Kafka living in a miserable capitalistic world.
This has nothing to do with materialism, its more about too much work and Few rewards, he maintains his family but at what cost, ok maybe the problem wasn't few rewards, he got to mantain 4 People, well three, he was a bug, i think its more about how too much effort can make you miserable, like the life of many Japanese people, and yes it is a problem of capitalism, im not gonna lie, capitalism is not perfect, its the system that w It is the system that works best but its not perfect at all
I didn’t expect it to be this good, finished it in couple of hours truly a gem
Same here. Finished within 2 hours in one sitting!! The writing flowed so easily💯
One of the best and painful books I’ve ever read. The story is symbolic, and because of this story I learned to appreciate “Kafkaesque” works.
Just finished reading this, and can't get over the ending!
I remember reading this book more than 5 years ago and i still remember every detail of it, gregor's story still haunts me, ive always thought this book was about an stressed man, but its more than just that, i simply cannot find the real message of this book, such a pity this book hasn't made it to the big screen, it has so much potential
One of the more depressing books I've read. "Night" by Elie Wiesel is up there as well.
Holden I read that book during middle school and cried
Bruh.. That's my next unit after the metamorphosis....
Interesting that they are connected by the theme of family turning against family and/or seeing family as a burden and obligation in a time of crisis.
Note: Weisrl's guilt at wishing he weren't responsible for his father's needs, witnessing another father and son when the son fought the father for a scrap of food, etc.
Man... Night is a rough one. I remember a few people in my class visibly crying at some of the more tear-wrenching moments.
I feel so bad for Gregor even tho he ain't real... :(( Cuz it's similar to my dad but don't worry, my dad's healthy and alive
They main character her is his Father & His Boss they don't give any attention to Gregor and instead to thinking to helping him to revert back to human form they start attacking him because they are looking to him as machine or animal irrespective that he is their son.

U also interpreted my thoughts in a composed manner. I was of the same view that writer is actually criticizing the materialistic society and was quite wondered that why no one is reflecting the actual interpretation in comment section untill I found your comment.
Changes like this can happen very suddenly in life. So the explanation isn’t really required.

As the title of Kafka's book suggests, Gregor experiences a metamorphosis, rather than a "transformation".
I just read this and oh my God. Gregor died alone and unloved. But on the bright side, his family left and went on their own journeys to start a new living, isnt that kind of good? Also is the apple being stuck to Gregor's body a symbolism for something?
turberculosis
I believe the symbol of the apple is the dagger which his father stabbed in his back after being useless and valueless to his family.
@@abazaabdelmageid774 I see. I think the story focused more on the Samsa family lifestyle, rather than Gregors issue
Yes, it does. The first line of the story.
His description definitely fits a cockroach or beatle rather than a rat or mouse
the shit in the story is such a real deal to humanity, and for some reason people natural tendency is to ignore it and interestingly enough, some people can't even see it. (like WTF!)
are we even conscious and if yes what's the damn use of it anyway?!
I would be surprised that they would think Gregor became an insect (not sure how that would be physically possible) rather than that the big insect ate him
I like how this story leaves you kinda pissed
This is a very good video, thanks for posting it! It was very well done and it helped me with my work :)

I tried my best to change him, but he didn’t want to.
what the F ! What the hell was that ? even just these 7 mins gave the blow of depression to the perfectly healthy mind.
not me reading the whole book thinking he was a rat only to find out solely from this comments section that he was a bug 👁💧👄💧👁
I honestly thought this was a metaphor but he fr turned into a bug
Wow, I wanted to read it yesterday and now I find such a concise short summary! Thanks for your work!
I don’t know if this was the point of Kafkas work, but I think it’s quite sad and reflective of modern society that Gregors primary concern when he wakes, is not that he has turned into a literal insect, but instead that he is late for work.
Very insightful of Kafka to perhaps for-see how people will place work and gaining some form of societal or material success, over their internal and external wellbeing.

yo u just saved me from the school presentation!
Don't be emotional, its just a analysis.:)
Atlast, things i learned:
- You have to be responsible for your actions, live how you want to live(taking rational actions) so that later you don't find any way to feel regret or blame someone for your life.
Moral of the story: "Sad endings are meant to be sad."
It's great but nothing compares to reading the book
The decision to illustrate Gregor as a ladybug makes the novel seem so innocent 💀💀

metamorphosis is about learned helplessness of the family, injury of the son, resentment of the family of the now crippled son that they have to take care of in turn and their relief that he died/committed suicide to relief his family of the burden of returning the favor of taking care of him once he realized his family held no love for him without merit
