this book also shows how people, even your family, can change their attitude towards you once you turn into a "bug".
i personally interpreted "bug" as a person with some kind of a disability, a person that became helpless, that couldn't work and earn money anymore.
Gregor became a burden, emotional and physical. before his transformation the main thing that he did to his family was working and helping them with money. now he lost his ability to work and thus lost his main responsibility in the family

I personally felt resentment towards the rest of Gregor’s family by the end of the book. Gregor had worked so hard his whole life to help provide for his family and even pay off their debts while his father sat around and did nothing but after only a few months of Gregor being helpless because of forces he couldn’t control, his family(especially his father)completely lost patience and turned on him.

Sorry English is not my first language:
Well in my opinion most of Kafka's work has more than one true meaning (Imagine an onion for lack of better phrasing). I think that the true metamorphosis was not Gregor at all,(Maybe on a more surface layer) but his family. And I also don't think that there are good or bad characters here. Only a broken family trying their best. The true metamorphosis is the family, which was in a cocoon of self loathing and getting railroaded by Gregor who planed out their futures and even if he only was goodhearted and attempting to help the family, he didn't do them any favors. (Example: he wants his sister to go to violin school and daydreams about her loving it and him for paying, he thinks his father can't do anything proper anymore, that his mother is weak, when Greta plays the violin he wants to take her away and she will join him out of free will etc.) in the end the alienation was necessary for the butterfly to be able to escape the comfortable yet restricting Cocoon and go out into the world as a beautiful butterfly. ( Shown with the last sentence of his sister stretching [her wings?]). There is a lot of more details I see there to support this interpretation. (Example: We never see Gregor in any other way, he didn't go through the metamorphosis he already was a grotesque creature from the beginning.)

that's a fascinating take. I feel like His emotional and mental unstability manifested in the form of a bug. Every single leg were moving separately and he couldn't control them. I think the legs symbolises forms, or distractions of life. How we as humans are known as our social status, our clothes, our looks, and consequently we look the same in others. They distract us from the actual purpose and meaning of life: To be one with the universe. Gregor was so preoccupied by him being getting late that he could no longer be one with the universe or in this case be one with himself. Indicating how the modern society is alienating us from Ourselves. Our true self. What are we if we remove every single of those distractions/forms? Man is a slave of their own creation. Man created money and social status and now man slanders and despises his own creation.

In real life, the “Metamorphosis” is an uncanny parallel, deja-vue, a premonition of Kafka’s life and end of life cycle- death by starvation. He got a bug, i.e. laryngeal tuberculosis, and six years later metamorphosed into a helpless bedridden thing, cared for and fed by his youngest sister. One of his former girlfriends was a Greta. He had an oppressive father who was a traveling salesman. The main character was a salesman and the father wasn’t kind. Kafka died unmarried at 40 - dependent, silent, unable to eat and starving like the main character. After his death, family life goes on as usual like in the story.

Gregor’s tale is incredibly relevant to modern America. It’s horribly common for dedicated loved ones to be casted aside when they finally become a burden, as if love had an expiration date. As if all the struggles they went through for their family means nothing when they’re no longer of any use.
My mother suffered brain trauma and is nothing like how she was. But her love for us is still there and while it’s been a difficult seven years we still love her.
I always found the story to be heartbreaking when I was younger and having to live what it represents I see the complete tragedy.
Please never abandon your loved ones, love isn’t always painless, but don’t let the pain make you forget all they’ve ever done for you either

Coincidentally, I finished Leo Tolstoy's novella _The Death of Ivan Ilyich_ a few days before I read _The Metamorphosis_ - there is an uncanny resemblance between the two books. Although Tolstoy's work dives deeper into the existential crisis of its protagonist, both illustrate sudden, horrific suffering and the growing indifference of family members as the protagonists are left to waste away, alone...

Gregor Samsa's story is a metaphor for sacrifice. His terrible state is directly due to overwork and personal dissatisfaction, which he burdened in order to give his family a life of relative comfort and security.
Gregor Samsa is one of the most pathetic, yet endearing figures in literature. Kafka's characterization of Gregor was perfect in representing his message throughout the story, because Gregor's evolution was the point and purpose of the entire novella.
Like Gregor, Kafka disliked his authoritarian father, and felt compelled to work a job he disliked in order to financially support his family. 1:58 [Amazon; Cram; Study]

Also a different take away I had from the book was that in life and bug, Gregor was only a hinderance for his family. thinking he had to provide for the entire lifestyle they were living, and also hindering himself financially and emotionally with the burden of the life he thinks he has to provide. Then, once he is a bug, his family sees that can they provide for themselves and do have skills , not what Gregor had assumed of them . And while they had bright futures ahead, Gregor was still holding them back as a bug of the family in the apartment, never moving on and living his life as a bug else where like Grete suggested. And when he dies in the end, the result of his life was really that no matter the good intentions he had and did do, the world was always better off without him. A tragic life to live indeed

I don’t agree with the fact that apples are symbolism in the story especially as a biblical allusion. The only thing I can understand from the inclusion of apples is that mr Samsa ,although struggling financially, should choose to throw ripe fruit at his son in pure rage showing his utter ignorance and discontent at the situation. To be honest I don’t know how the Apple was ever supposed to allude to genesis in the book at all lmao. However the Apple may symbolise Gregor’s unchanging nature in the book as it sits there and accumulated dust and rot possibly showing his family did nothing but exacerbate his pain and suffering perpetuating his status as a bug.

@@ninavinterova9875 You're probably right. But for the English speaking world, it's always been pronounced Graygor. The pronunciation of the names usually changes due to accents and dialects. For instance, I'm sure Czech speakers won't be pronouncing Chekov's characters properly. What's the point of nitpicking?

I had a completely different interpretation of metamorphoses.
Imagine the story from this lens: Gregory, alienated by modernity, dissapears without a trace.
The family greive for their son but feel helpless. Greta, leaves meals for Gregory in the hopes he might return but in reality a mere cockroach snacks on it.
Greta begins to associate this cockroach with Gregory and her parents, seeing the consolation this provides, allow it to happen and go on to the point where they buy into this Beleif as well. It is as though she has put hallucinative qualities onto this cockroach. If Gregory's metamorphis is real or not it does matter, it shows the power of greif against rationalism. The cockroach views it all but only by some figment of the imagination did it become Gregory. It just witnessed the events. In the end the cockroach dies and with it, any association with their lost son. They can now move on and chase a brighter future.

Hard for me not to read this as tinged with Kafka's alienation from society based upon his Jewishness. Vermin was a classic anti-Semitic trope, and being a business traveler symbolized Jewish wanderings. And in the end, everyone is happiest when the "pest" is finally eliminated

Kafka isn’t just critiquing modern life and work, he is critiquing capitalism. I’m not sure why Course Hero feels the need to dance around Kafka’s use of a Marxist critique of capitalism as being alienating.
