One of Metallica's well know songs. Metallica wrote "Fade To Black" after their equipment was stolen, throwing them into a funk. The band was scheduled to play a show in Boston on January 14, 1984. The truck with their gear got their first, and when their road crew looked for it the next morning, it was gone. They had to cancel the show and postpone a planned tour of Europe. The thieves got Lars Ulrich's drum kit and James Hetfield's custom amp, which had a lot of sentimental value to him. It was under this cloud that Hetfield wrote the very grim lyric. Hetfield clarified that he was never contemplating suicide but was using this dark time as impetus for the song about a guy who does. The idea is that we can sometimes feel helpless when stricken by events outside our control, and while we're all allowed to wallow in our misery, it's up to us to turn it around. Source:Songfacts
In an interview Kirk say that James and Lars where always speaking about death , and is noticeable in the all album the thematic dead is all over , Ride the lightning (execution), for whom the bell tools (a soldier knowing what is to come )
That whole "Ride The Lightning" album is fantastic another great song from it is "For Whom The Bells Tolls" if you want another awesome Metallica song to try from that album?
🔥🔥🔥🤘🤘🤘 you have so many otherworldly live performances from Metallica in front of you…full of energy and stage performance on an another level….Metallica’s level 🔥🔥🔥🤘🤘🤘….several years crowned the best live band outthere
Hi Sarah! "Fade to Black" is the first power ballad by Metallica, released as the first promotional single from its second studio album, Ride the Lighting, the song was ranked as having the 24th best guitar solo ever by Guitar World readers. The song is certfied gold by the Recording Industry Association of America. Suggestion another amazing power ballad: "Blackmore´s Night - Soldier of Fortune" (Live in Paris 2006) The song is written by Richie Blackmore and David Coverdale.
I got called to guidance counselor office in high-school. I had the lyrics to this song in a notebook and my teacher saw it and thought I wrote a poem. Had to explain i wasn't suicidal.
IT'S TEN THOUSANDS TIMES MUCH BETTER!! EACH TIME I SEE METALLICA PERFORMING LIVE IS JUST A BLESSING. GREAT REACTION!!!! 🤘🏼🎶
