This song saved my life.
❤
They were only barely into their early 20's and had such powerful songwriting skills and musicianship . That's why they're still around. I can't believe that song is almost 40 years old.
It really is crazy I listened to this for the first time 23 years ago and I was just blown away! \m/
Last guitar solo wasn’t even written or anything. Just played. That takes skills.
This is a GD masterpiece forever and always.
Also, singing about suicide is not endorsing suicide. And many people have said listening to this song and knowing that others share their pain / depression has helped them through that.
This song lets you live vicariously through the music and say goodbye to whatever is troubling you without really having to say goodbye in the real world.
Whatever people go through it is healing just to have another person say "i understand you. i feel that too."
This song is that.
Such musicianship for such young men. And the powerful lyrics with which so many of us adolescents at the time related to some degree, or at least understood. Incredible.
How it makes you feel is how it makes you feel. No correct answer to that one, but I consider that solo at the end to be him `checking out` and it fades to black in the end. I think what keeps this song from being just a meaningless dive into suicide is how relatable it is to many people. He's singing about something very real that thankfully most people don't go through with, but have gotten right to that edge. "Emptiness is filling me to the point of agony." I've even heard people say this song probably saved their lives. Hyperbole? Perhaps, but obviously had an impact either way.
It saved mine after 15 years of hard times and deep depression.
Yes, this song absolutely saved my life. Very dark time in my life and, for whatever reason, this song gave me hope.
The solo at the end is like the backing music is his mind/soul leaving the body and the solo is his body fighting by instinct against what he's doing.
The solos in Master of Puppets is also very descriptive when he takes a hit and feels good and then when he feels abstinence.
It saved my life as well. Rock/ metal in general did. Its very healing.
Probably their best Song... reminds me about the good old Days.
One of the best from these guys. Reminds me of the old days. Try “Welcome Home (Sanitarium)”, “The Call Of Ktulu”, “Orion” and “To Live Is To Die”.
This song is a chainsaw. A powerful and useful tool but, dangerous as hell if your mind isn't right and you aren't ready to handle it.
The song is nothing like that
The solo at the end is the adrenaline rush of the person, as you feel the bubble bass drum kicks in thats persons heart beat speeding up and the guitarist riffs get higher and and more intince painting the picture if feelings just before the person ends his life!
Remember that this was written in '84.....they were 23yrs old...... Respect!
James was 20 when he first wrote it lol
This is a very heavy song, but the fact is it is reality for so many people. People that have suffered from depression for so many years and it just seems like there's no hope except death to bring it in to it.. I get it....
I feel bad for people who missed this generation of music
A few days before writing and recording this song, the band had much of their equipment stolen. Including an amp Hetfields mother had given him as a birthday present, before she passed away from cancer.
You are very underappreciated sir!! Love your thoughtfulness and willingness to "hear" the lyrics and music as well!! ❤️
Sometimes seeing our selves in potential dramatic/drastic situations it's the best way to avoid those scenarios. To me this song is gives me power to pursue better things in life and out do myself every day.
Great reaction as usual! I've had my struggles with depression and this is one of the songs that helped me get though it. It was part of a playlist that I'd put on when it was too much and I wanted out. It was very cathartic for me and helped to purge the desire to commit suicide when the blackness overwhelmed me. 🤘Rock On!🤘 Kelly
This song saved me from suicide because it gave words to what I was feeling at the time.
Many people exist who say that this song has helped them beat feelings of depression. The reason at least in my eyes for this is the idea that the song though dark in nature at the end picks up in intensity quite heavily and gives a feeling of an adrenaline rush that can lead to feelings of wanting to fight. Wanting to prove that you have the strength to keep going. If one thing is sure Metallica is a band made of people who are masters at pulling emotions out of a person through music. For that matter they are masters at making the music they play have an emotion of its own. I hear this song and I go into beast mode. An almost animalistic feeling of never giving up no matter what I'm going through. The solo at the end from Kirk is an absolute masterpiece and for me is by a long shot the best guitar solo ever created. I've heard nothing that for me comes close.
As far as I remember, the idea of the song is that we should understand and feel happy about the person involved rather than be sad about his death.
I visualize this song every time I hear it...so powerful.
They were going through rough times and decided to express it through music and sing it as a musical release for those going through rough times. Sometimes a good song or a good movie can help get those bad feels out of your system.
Thank you for acknowledging the incredible pain behind this song. Musically, it’s beautiful, but also so drenched in pain.
Ozzy Osbourne's "Suicide Solution" was banned from most radio stations after a lawsuit against Ozzy claiming his song led to the death of a teenager. The lawsuit was later dismissed
Loved your reaction, every now and then I look up recent reactions to this song on youtube to see other people listening for the first time and i gotta say this is probably my favorite reaction. The way you broke it down and actually thought of the right questions and things that really mattered was great. New Subscriber here.
I was a teenager when this came out. More than a few of my friends and acquaintances are alive today because they heard this song and knew from it they were not alone. Resolving into some happy conclusion would have made that impossible because thats not how depression works.
Harri, this song took you inward. Your eyes were closed. I understand. I have PTSD.
I don't know how to say this but the difference with Metallica and say Soundgarden is that when James sings about depression and suicide, there's heavy riffs to pull you out, where Soundgarden with songs like Fell on Black Days leaves you in the darkness. I think James dealt with his depression and suicidal thoughts with Anger, where Chris Cornell couldn't get past the sadness. James has an angry spirit and it's a blessing. I think it keeps him hear with us.
I call it Fade to VVhite now after watching so many interesting positive reactions to it.
JUST FEEL HOWEVER YOU WANT TO FEEL, THIS IS THE METALLICA'S EFFECT. GREAT REACTION MY FRIEND!! 🤘🏼🎶
To answer your question, yes, the song was super controversial and many people were accusing them of promoting suicide, but I disagree, this song has helped me in ways not many can understand, and I promise you i’m not the only one who this song has saved from suicide. But changing the subject, this song in my opinion is the greatest piece of music of all time, it is instrumentally perfect, not too heavy and the guitar solo is unmatched
Hello from Cody Wyoming, Bestie! You're awesome I love your energy and love your reactions you're one of my favorites😀
Another Masterpiece
Another great one to do is Pantera "cemetery gates"
The musical solo at the end of the song is the point of the song. Kirk is telling us not to give up. But fight on.
Right
One of his best…this and Unforgiven
Kirk is high as a kite and whipping out some sloppy solo
The Kings
🔥 🔥
🤘🤣🤘
Kids today think they have a "corner on the market" when it comes to inner turmoil and craziness of youth. This song, 40+ years old, proves that they don't. We had those same thoughts and feelings....but we had music, REAL MUSIC, that helped us through. Music today has No Heart, NO Soul......it's mindless garbage that not only doesn't help but contributes to the craziness. Curt wrote about, expertly, what we ALL went through...those dark periods in our lives that we though would never end. It's not a "Happy" song, and you aren't supposed to feel "Happy" after hearing it. It's SUPPOSE to make to Think....to Make you FEEL.....that's what Music is all about.
This song made me aware of my emotions, back in the day. Which actually helped. Im obviously still alive today/
Your best reacting video choice by far
Haven't heard you react to it yet but I hope it's good
Love Metallica, have all my adult life. I've just recently found your site and love it as well. When you have time, look up the Queen of Rockabilly, Wanda Jackson. Everything she did is great but start with 1958 Hard Headed Woman and then look at her 60 year career. She's fantastic. I saw her live a few years ago and am so blessed to have gotten to see her.
The big controversy was over Suicide Solution by Ozzy. The crazy thing is that song is a warning against alcoholism, calling it a slow form of suicide. Solution not referring to solving a problem but as in a liquid mixture.
I prefer Unforgiven or Enter Sandman to this one, seemed to be lacking bass ! Best one to watch is "Enter Sandman" in Moscow, Russia Live in '91, with 1.6 Million People ! I love James, Kirk, and Lars, and Robert, (on bass)! Kirk is one of the best guitarists ever! ❤
Rock Stars fill a Stadium
Metallica fills a Military Airfield ✌👍
maybe because this song was in 84 and the others you mention in 91 (with better sound technology?) those songs come nowhere close to this one
@@jcerra84 As far as sound quality, your opinion! Enter Sandman LIVE can't compare to that, plus Harri normally doesn't take 13 minute songs. Have a great day!
Song got me through a lot of hard teenage-adult times in the 80's. That album is oned of my favorite. My Pesach (Passover) song is on it. Creeping Death. Straight from Exodus.
The suicide song lawsuit was “Better By You Better Than Me” by Judas Priest. You should react to that song! And Suicide Solution from Ozzy.
The suicide song was banned in many countries after a huge amount of people taking their lives link to song
Yes!!!!! Definitely more Metallica! Try to do live performances if possible...😎😂👍💪🎼🎼🍷🚬
best guitar riff ever.
Also should check out Welcome Home (sanitarium) epic song
Harri!!!😁😁😁😁
You're speaking of the mid 80s and 1 of the songs was Judas priest beyond the realms of death It's a must listen. That is when tipper gore and congress we're trying to Put explicit lyric labels on albums
James Hetfield wrote the lyrics and hes still alive.
Recording industry: Death Metal bands shall never record ballads
Metallica: Hold our beer!
Metallica is not a "death metal" band, they are thrash metal
Could you please react to HammerFall - Brotherhood (Official Video), or (We Make) Sweden Rock, they are a swedish band, really amazing! they are very catchy, but also old school. They are formed in 1993
Give a listen to Dire Straights "Fade To Black" (same title/completely different )
The early Metallica IMO is the best. During the Cliff Burton days!
If you liked Fade to Black you'll Really love One.
best song metallica wrote before they sold out...only thig hate about this song is it i too short
The first part of the song the guy is sad and depressed. When the song speeds up, he is saying "good bye" to the old depressed person and he chooses to live! So the song is actually a positive song about living and fighting on. Great song.
Sanitarium by Metallica is similar.
Near interrupt a guitar solo. I know it’s hard
it's a dangerous song imo. I remember one time (as you said you had also) I was at a crossroads. and this is gonna sound made up but I swear it's not. I was really thinking about doing it too and the song "Stand Tall" came on the radio and it was like it was speaking directly to me. And it gave me pause and some much needed perspective.
fix ya sound
