These are the only clips I have seen from the match but it doesn't seem corrupt, but rather unprofessional which begs the point why they choose this referee in the first place. I don't know any backstory on the referee but it doesn't look like he has many hours on the pitch judging. The pen, the freekick when the korean player was hit by the ball not the player and when the ref changed from giving freekick to just advantage after blowing the whistle. Other then that it looks normal. Seems more like just wrong decision calls and unprofessionalism from the ref. If anyone can point out more situations I might understand. The ref was right in not booking freekick on the bleeding injury that was made by a fellow Italian teammate. Also Italys freekick was blocked by an Italian player.

I think we are judging the referee based on today rules as it seems the referee gives more yellow and red cards. It used to be tougher game and players were given cards if they were really aggressive. Italian players were fouled, but so the South Koreans ones, and first, based on this video. As some one else said, 2 Italians players should be sent off first. An Italian player got injured in the air, and it did not seem to be the Korean one's fault, but his teammate one. Some titles and images can influence people's opinion. I did not watch the game or do not remember it, but based on this vedio the Italians players were the more aggressive, and they deserved more cards, based on today rules.

To be fair, this was a pretty even game. Italian players did hard fouls too and played too aggressively, which this kind of "Italy-South Korea 2002" compilations in UA-cam always conveniently forget. So yes, it was rigged as Byron Moreno was too permissive with Korean fouls but too strict with Italian fouls as well as the Tommasi goal being legal but called offside, but the Italian squad were no saints either.
Imho the Spain-South Korea game was way more tragic. Despite Korean players played hard and aggressive since the first minute, but the Spanish players never lost their cool (that is, until Helguera tried to beat up Egyptian ref Jamal Al-Ghandour after the game ended), and Spain scored not one, not two but THREE legal goals that were called offside.
