Our PCS took us to Kadena Air Force Base in Okinawa, Japan! This condo was a tiny bit more expensive than our housing allowance, but it checked all our boxes! We haven't fully moved in yet, but I wanted to share a glimpse of what an off-base housing option looks like
We are located near Kadena AFB in the Mizugama area. Groceries, coffee, restaurants, & the Seawall are all in walking distance.

New subscriber. I love watching videos about Okinawa. I was stationed at Camp Foster, way back Aug 74 to Sep 75. Beautiful place, but hot and humid in the summer, I lived in the barracks NO air conditioning back then. Stay safe.

Sadly a stateside TDY that was cancelled mid course + travel restrictions has kept us from going home until the virus is under control! looking forward to getting there, although I agree the humidity and heat will be tough this summer! stay safe as well
I was in Oki back in the late 60's and early 70's didn't find good surfing there but enjoyed a lot of scuba diving.

Beautiful place. Stationed at Kadena from 2006-2010. We loved it and miss it deeply. Def live off base if you can. EXPLORE the island. Just watch out for the caspers in some of these places off base. Lol!
yes totally agree! we love off-base to truly immerse ourselves while stationed here! glad you were able to experience the beauty of Okinawa too 💙

That Apartment is gorgeous, i also love natural lighting haha. My husband and I are apartment hunting rn, as we both got our off base housing packages approved. He’s a little worried about size, exactly how big your place? (If its not too invasive to answer!) One of the places we’re looking at looks great except its 762 square feet 😅

Very plush compared to what was available in 1965-66 in the places I visited. That was just 20 years after WWII, graders were still uncovering unexploded munitions on gravel roads.
I am absolutely blown away by so many of the recent UTube videos showing how much modernization there has been.
I have a question. We had several Okinawan ladies that worked in our office. They would be in their 80's now.
I have wanted to contact them. But, with the language barrier have not gotten anywhere.
Do you have any suggestions?
It definitely has changed so much over the years. Unfortunately, I do not know how to get in contact with them either. Maybe there's someone at the office now (if it's around?) that could find their information? Sorry I cannot be more of a help! I'm currently learning Japanese but don't know much at this point :(

We were part of the 2d Log Command, logistically supporting Vietnam activities.I think the command is long gone. If I did not say in my earlier message our barracks and office were in Machinato and Naha Wheel areas at various times.
I am wondering if I addressed letters to the Okinawan Postmaster of a main post office in the Naha Prefecture if there is any chance of delivery?
I note you are also from Minnesota. You missed about two weeks of not getting above zero here. So, you are many degrees warmer where you are. Although, I do recall days in the mid 40's there with cold off shore winds that were not at all comfortable.

Lots nicer than the tiny house I had down the hill from MCAS in 1975. I think they tore it down to build new apartments
constant construction on the island for sure! we're very lucky to be in the place we are now :)
Shower and tub being separate makes sense because japan has a bath culture. You shower before taking a bath.

we did not, we actually were able to acquire off base housing because of on-base housing being full. So I believe it depends on the timing of arrival

Is it easy to travel to mainland Japan during the weekends? Okinawa is on my list of duty stations but I hate that its not on mainland japan.
It's definitely possible! Espcially on 3 day weekends! Okinawa is a tropical paradise, it's the best duty station in Japan imo 😆
This place looks awesome! What is this complex called? We got soft orders to Okinawa and will be expected to move August 2024. How much was rent and did that include utilities water/electricity/gas? How far from base? American plug ins? Animals allowed?
for privacy reasons I cannot post, but they are individually owned units so rules regarding animals vary by unit. Rent is roughly 200,000yen. Bills are separate. Okinawa has lots of great housing options!

Maybe check Yomitan! It kind of depends on what base you are stationed at. The best bet would be to contact as many housing agencies as possible a month to two weeks before getting here so you can set up multiple viewings to find what you like 😊

@@AONIXO yes great advice! and honestly it was pretty easy!! Just contact a few housing agencies and they will take you to all the places currently available! places with ocean views are hard to come by, but they do happen, just has to be the right timing!

for this place it was through Robinson Housing. Not all units are able to be shown by all housing agencies, so be sure to check as many as you can!
I’m an army wife and my husband is in AIT right now. I’m supposed to be looking for a house off base within 4 weeks. How do I find a good home if I’ve never been to that area?
I would contact the housing agencies here and see what they have available in the area you are looking for. There are many bases so I'm not sure which one you will be located at, but we recently went apartment hunting and the housing agent said there are a lot of places available right now in general compared to normal for this time of year. You said you know that it's custom to take off your shoes and that you wear indoor slippers but then you walked through the whole place with your shoes on.
Check your lease. It likely specifically says you must take off our shoes.
we are aware that it's customary in Japan, and that's what we do 99% of the time. we were leaving for a few months and I wanted to get this quick video filmed before we walked out the door 👍🏽
@@EcoFlightAttendant I understand. Please forgive my negativity. It just urched me when I saw it. I have lived in Japan for over 18 years so I have learned that for most Japanese it's not a 99% of the time thing. It's 100%. Also, because I am so ingrained in these customs now it surprised me that you would admit that this was the custom and then intentionally continue to wear them in a video that you are posting on youtube for the world to see. Again, sorry for the negativity. It was a good video. Please just follow the custom, check your lease and think before you post.
@@Katastrophikal our lease did not say that. the point of this video is to help military families see what off-base housing is like & those benefits outweighed making the mistake of posting a video where we wore shoes indoors. appreciate the concern though, we love japan & the customs that come with it 👍🏽
Does the military pay the entire rent since living on base there is no charge? What does the rent run for apt?
Housing pay depends on rank/yrs of service/marital status/etc. this apt is roughly 2k usd

@@shannoncrook4712 the military pays an adequate amount to live off base, but it varies immensely. so for some this would exceed their alloted amount. It depends on the variety of factors I listed above

It was not, however it came with washer dryer and microwave oven.
