"The lower the pressure, the stronger the storm" A quote I still hear when I watch weather. My family gets fascinated by weather & watched this NOVA repeatedly when I was really little 3 or 4 when the parents recorded it on VHS. Love NOVA
I am very proud of Dr.willougby, not only he is an excellent meteorology professor, but a great and knowledgeable person. Highly recomended to sign up for his meteorology courses at Florida international university .
Took his course several years ago as an elective and it was great. Being a life long weather watcher, the tour of the National Hurricane Center was such a highlight.
@@vain1603 😅😅😅😅😅 Not sure why you would be curious (particularly with an account that seemed pretty new when you sent me this comment 2 years ago), but I had recently turned 29... so I guess that I was 18 when I sent that comment?? (Haven't touched this account in *years*, so I'm only seeing this now.)
Video unpublished Gilberto on the Cayman Islands .. thanks for add. The turbulence of the eye wall, and then at minute 4:46 .. upon entering the eye is impressive. The reconnaissance flight showed that the lowest pressure of a hurricane of the twentieth century :D
It's incredible when you see them penetrate out of the eyewall and into the eye in a second. He actually mentioned seeing a pressure of 882mb in this film. Guess it was changed to 888 but he strangely predicted Wilma's pressure 17 years later.
Reminds me of an awesome time when documentaries interviewed real people and used real footage to tell a story, instead of bombarding us with CG effects and "dramatic re-enactments". *sigh* Those were good days.
No matter how rough passing through the eye wall is, I'd be happy to tag along if they took me in those planes. Just to arrive at the eye of the hurricane...
I had always understood that the lowest confirmed air pressure in Hurricane Gilbert was 888 mb, as opposed to the 882 mb pressure stated in the video. Hurricane Wilma in 2005 had a confirmed lowest pressure of 884 mb in 10 knots of wind, extrapolated down to 882. Wilma's eyewall was only 3-4 miles wide at that point, and the recon plane suffered structural damage and had to RTB. There is conjecture based upon satellite presentation that Wilma had continued to strengthen after the last recon penetration, but there are no actual observations to back this.
look up Dr jeff masters,he doesn't fly anymore do to a rough handling in a hurricane a few yrs later that scared him.Maybe he knows how to get a copy.I would like it too.I remeber that episode.
too bad the full length of this documentary is not on youtube... WTF? it was actually rather good. Also - I found it in my archive but I'm not uploading it because I don't want to be bludgeoned by the Hammer of god, which wouldn't do anyone any good. So if y'all want to see anything twice, better download it!
No it's not, it's the calm point at the storm and they went inside the eye to claim the pressure of the storm, the lowest pressure of the storm is in the eye.
Oh shut up, I looke dat your channel and your first liekd video is about an iPhone and you arent that old, to be saying this stuff. Psh. You had some new technogolgy growing up.
I remember this Hurricane Gilbert it hit my country Jamaica in 1988 I was 4 years old.

The eye of a hurricane is (in my opinion) the most beautiful thing in nature.
GonzoSarge Me too!! I want to visit it, but i don't have personal Jet...
Not only that, but to keep a level head and actually be analytical during all of this...I chalk it up to passion...these guys were born to do this.
Absolutely beautiful. This video was truly "eye"-opening.

Agree, and yet I wonder if the music heard at 4:00 announces a precedent for what your criticizing.

Hurricane Wilma had 882mb.
This is an interesting video! Thanks for posting!

At 9:08, is that the late Dr. John Hope from the Weather Channel? I remember he was a hurricane expert.

Gilbert was a beast
Wow its so epic while they get to the eye of it👍❤
