  • Ashesi University - How a Ghanaian Millionaire quit Microsoft to open one of the best University in Africa. Working in a multibillion-dollar corporation America’s Silicon Valley is a dream come true for most people. Hence, it's incredible that someone would willingly quit a high-paying job at one of the world's most prominent corporations such as Microsoft. Patrick Awuah is an engineer, professor and businessman, who left a lucrative career at Microsoft to establish a university in his home country Ghana. Awuah founded Ashesi University in 2002 and has received numerous honors both as an individual and as the founder of Ashesi University. The university is a private, non-profit university located in Accra, Ghana. The mission of Ashesi University is to educate ethical, entrepreneurial leaders in Africa; to cultivate within students the critical thinking skills, the concern for others, and the courage it will take to transform the continent. In 2018, Ashesi University was awarded a charter by the president of Ghana, granting it full independence as a nationally recognised degree-granting institution. It was the youngest university to have been granted a presidential charter in Ghana's history. It is a member of the Council of Independent Universities, the Association of African Universities, and the Association of Commonwealth Universities. Join us in our video today, which looks into story of how Patrick Awuah, a multi-millionaire who quit his job at Microsoft to create one of the best university in Africa.

It is really great that someone can repay the scholarship that was awarded to them many times fold. Many underdeveloped economies would give citizens scholarships to study abroad with the understanding that they would return to help develop the country. Most recipients don't return.

His root? It would be preferable to say “his country” rather .. mind you, he was born and raised in Ghana. Attended high school in Ghana, he left Ghana for his college education in his late teens...if he is an African American or a Ghanaian American, born and raised in America, then the word “root” would be appropriate.

We Africans have the obligation to be moral. Our own history demands it. In this perspective, here we should present things in terms of added value. Because if we say 'quit to', it can seems like we do not recognize the added value his time at Microsoft has been to his project in Africa. Therefore, instead 'quit', it can be 'after having worked at Microsoft', this Ghanaian Computer Engineer open one of the best Universities in Africa.
We must be grateful, we must be moral and ethical. We don't need to copy madness, greed, etc I mean the evil that the colonists, the predators and the organised criminals have brought to Africa.

Why should the university be named after Quame Nkrumah. I think it has no link with him. In any case there's already Nkrumah university of science and technology in Ghana. I believe the video mentioned who supported him to achieve this dream, which is the wife. Apparently the woman is Mathematics lecturer at the university. She supposed the husband dreams, left the luxury and comfort in America, etc. are all these not enough??? Believe me, some sisters wouldn't have helped this guy to this extent... why the hate... If you Google best private universities in Africa, I guess you can notice they're among the 10 in Africa. I believe this video is about his achievements, not necessarily the ranking... Just imagine if 2% of Africans are bold to do what he did. At least his University is teaching engineers how to manufacture drones, they have launch satellite to space, etc. There's more behind this story, if you can remove the hating perspective....
