Googling how do I make… in a microwave 😂
@@devangoad It reminded me of when I was younger and banned from using the stove/oven. My mom bought me a microwave cookbook because she knew I wouldn't listen 🤣
The monkeys are running the zoo.
Edit
Jamie desperately trying to grab his toast as he makes it pop out of the toaster while saying they’re definitely still normals is the most NORMAL behaviour
Kinda expected him to use a fork... but that was even better
"We're not chef-y at all!" -- then cook dishes with the wrong equipment that I couldn't manage with the right equipment.
"Deglazing the kettle" sounds like a euphemism that nobody asked for.
Is there not enough innuendos here already that you have to pull shit out of your ass?
Barry, Jamie and Mike when there are no chefs in the building: In our defense we were left unsupervised😅
That is my excuse for everything. i once got asked to change my t shirt on a plane as it read " I Cause Safety Briefs " also true
I have a T shirt that says that 😂😂
I might buy that t shirt somewhere 😂
They need to make an apron that says "Sorted Food. We were left Unsupervised." 😆
for me, the point of the brief was a restriction on the heat sources used, not the cooking vessels used... so Barry's hob usage was a break of the rules, whereas the frying pan on top of the toaster was totally within the spirit of the rules
then they need to specify electrical stuff only. the brief was the instruments only, kettle, microwave toaster. the method of use or heating isnt specified
@@sams-pg7hj agree.. there was no restriction on the source of heat
well they never said that did they? In the no pot no pan episode they used a bowl to make Polenta, same idea.
@@sams-pg7hj If it's not meant to be a restriction on electrical stuff, then they all cheated by using knives, bowls, chopping boards, etc!
@@BadIdeasBureau that’s different. That’s prep items. For actually cooking the stuff, only the three items were allowed
Mike: "I've knocked up a bread dough."
Literal baby in the oven.
13:04 Barry's "bending!" cracked me up. Though to clarify, in my opinion, Mike bent while Barry broke. Disqualification or at least last place for him. Mainly because Mike bent when his plan wasn't working, while Barry intended to use the hob all along.
I disagree.
no, I believe he want to put it in a microwave or electric kettle just like jamie's. BUT, putting that amount of oil and heating it WOULD be a safety hazard. So do you really think barry would just ignore that and blow up the studio or, getting similar results and understanding through using different heat source while maintaining safety?
Mike's cooking took place in a pan at the end there, not in a toaster, kettle, or oven. Barry's kettle didn't have it's own hear source, but the cooking still took place in the kettle.
I just ask: would the Taskmaster allow it? The rules were use a toaster, microwave, or kettle for cooking. Is a kettle a kettle if it has a separate heat source? Yes, it is. Is a pan a toaster, microwave, or kettle? No, it is not.
I think Barry broke the rules with his kettle-shaped pot on the hob, but at the same time I think he intended to put the oil in an electric kettle - but this would be too dangerous to experiment with.
@@kimsubaki6389 "Uh yeah, Ebbers? It's Baz. Listen, the studio's gone but at least I didn't break any rules."
The only word I can used to describe this is "unhinged". And I'm completely here for it. Well done gang
I love their shrieks of joy when something actually works.
Things I never thought I'd hear Jamie say "I've got to deglaze my pan oh I mean my kettle" lol 🤣🤣🤣
Barry's bearnaise sauce makes me want an episode on various ways to make bearnaise, and which ones are "good enough". You can buy store bought. You can buy powders. You can do it like Barry did. You can do it the "proper" way. There are a ton of "cheats" that people claim are good and easier than the "proper" way.
Oo yes this would be great and also maybe they can explain the difference between bernaise, hollandaise, roux etc
The difference between the sauces is pretty straightforward. Hollandaise is a liaison sauce, butter and eggs whisked into an emulsion over heat. Basically a hot mayonnaise. Bearnaise is strictly a hollandaise with tarragon added, and a (usually tarragon)vinegar and shallot reduction added for piquancy, not other herbs. A roux is a cooked mixture of starch and fat, that is used to thicken a sauce, such as a veloute(with stock) or a béchamel, (with milk).
Ok, but it's always just a bit funny when you see a reduction gets reduced to....burnt bits on the bottom of the pan. I'm always for the traditional way when it comes to béarnaise. It's like a self-dare, how far do I dare to reduce the vinegar 😂😂😂
Invite Joshua Weisman and have him "Do it better" as part of the lesson
Make it a “fool the chef” episode. Give the boys a bunch of packaged sauces and make them create dishes.
This is actually such a lovely community - none of the top comments are saying which one they think is the worst, its all just commenting on how unhinged the entire episode was 😂
best community ever
fun fact: there are now a couple of brands of microwave safe stainless steel containers. no special coating, just math on how to shape the metal to NOT induce arcs. They work lovely.
Sounds scary but i'll look into it! Thank you!
They've even reviewed some gadgets that allow cooking steaks in microwaves)
@@ludmillashapovalova7168 True but im still super nervous about it lol i think its the childhood ptsd creeping from when put a spoon in the microwave.
Hob = breaking the rules
Pan on toaster = totally fine
Also, AMAZING video!
See if he put that kettle on the toaster I wouldve been all for it. But the hob was a gadge too far
Barry used a heat source like Jamie did with the base of his kettle. It doesn't say no hob it just says kettle microwave and toaster only and Barry used a kettle!
I have to agree. And I must say, that's the best looking camp kettle ever! So shiny and no dents.
@@Kez_abi The heating element in an Electric Kettle is in the bottom of the Kettle itself, not the base it sits on.
disagree. The rule is just it has to be cooked in a kettle, microwave or toaster. It was still cooked in a kettle.
I love how spaff was so surpised when mike said he was going to bake his bread in the microwave while he was naturally sauté-ing his onion and garlic into a KETTLE! haha
Although Barry's sauce in a microwave was impressive, he did break the rules by using the hob with his 'camping kettle' (which looked suspiciously brand new and has never seen a campfire), whereas Mike just bent them a bit with the skillet on top of the toaster. Winning order: Mike, Jamie, Barry.
Eh, I wouldn't rate the metal kettle any less in the spirit of the challenge than the specialized microwave that allows steel bread pans.
@@coreymorse1347to be fair, my microwave can take metal. I didn't then and I still definitely do not intend to bake bread in it, so it wouldn't surprise me if the boys also opted for one for unrelated reasons
Mike was still utilising the toaster to heat the food, Barry was using a separate heating element rather than the appliances that the challenge was intended for.
@@cass2239 incorrect very smart person that electric tea kettle just has a stove element in the bottom of it making it a stove with a kettle on it so anyone who used the kettle with the range built in was also breaking the rules
@@VineyardGHS "built in"
I did miss the guys explaining the rules. I know it's in the title but it's helpful to hear them say exactly how what they had in mind
Don't sure if I am only one who thinks this but like the preview at the start of the video. 🤷
Really zero intro!?
Might help them stick to them too lol
Barry broke the rules, the spirit of the challenge is about not using the stove or oven, whereas he's arguing the only thing that matters is the shape of the vessel. Mike bent the rules and stated fully in parameters by using the toaster as the source of heat for his pan. This while challenge basically boils down to not using the easiest heat sources, so Barry definitely broke and Mike bent
Mike bent the rules by using a microwave that doubles as an oven. So essentially, he used an oven. Verging on breaking the rules actually.
@@Lilian040210 It's just an appliance that has the functionality of both a microwave and an oven. These are not similar systems, using one function does not equal using the other. And microwave is explicitly allowed. It's not even close to breaking the rules for Mike to use it
Using a kettle as a stove was okay? But Using a kettle on a stove was not ?
@@kimberlyjacobsen4148 I can only assume you meant stove. And yes, since the electric kettle totally only gets to around boiling, whereas regular stove gets well above that
@@videogame1291 the only limitation in heat is in the heat sensing mechanism in the kettle.
Some kettles use the fact that the liquid boils as a sensors, so using oil will increase the energy in the “liquid” considerably
I love fondue bourguignon, and I think Barry did a fantastic job with all the accoutrement (the chips, the sauces, the kebabs). Still, I must agree with the majority and say that using the hob did break the rule, even if it was for a kettle. I'm also glad that Mike won this battle. He did some research and found something really original to cook for this battle, and it paid off since it totally worked and was delicious. I also liked how Jamie used his electric kettle as a saucepan and how he toasted his croutes in and on the toaster, but his dish was not as wild as Mike's, so I think second place is fitting for his offering.
Barry absolutely broke the rules using the hob. Othewise it was amazing to see everything they made, knowing full well they used only the microwave, kettle, and toaster. Brilliant! More challenges like this, please.
I love this video! I used to help teach people how to cook using all sorts of appliances instead of the normal stove/oven situation. It was in a low income area which was also a food desert. So we'd get whatever food was available at the nearby shops and maybe supplement with food bank items and then cook them using different things that weren't the "normal" cooking method. The goal was to help them cook healthier meals than the junk food that was easiest. Really enjoyed doing that.
You should share some tips!
Yes please share some of the tricks. This had me really intrigued and would love to know more. Pleeeaaassee 🙏🏼
Jamie at 3:03 pulling that face to the camera following mike saying he's taking the internets advice knowing full well he's about to put garlic into a kettle is a thing of beauty
I couldn't agree more
Paul Hollywood will have a stroke watching Mike bake bread. I love it, BRAVO!
Maybe next season we'll see a technical, "Bake bread in microwave." That'll be the entirety of the instructions.
I agree that Barry's assessment "It is an oil bomb" was correct HOWEVER........ Barry BREAKs the rules here. And I love it that Mike was sure it would be horrible and it turned out so well. All that aside - damned good job guys. It looked really tasty.
Then a convection microwave shouldn't have been allowed either. It should have been the everyday microwave that Barry used for his Bernanise sauce.
@@OccasionalVloggerI'm not entirely sure, but I think that's a microwave/oven combo, so you can use just the microwave part, which is what Mike did.
@@Tongle07 depends on how the microwave part works, most likely its through convection which would be breaking the rules too
@@Tongle07 You can't put metal in a microwave. He just used an oven and called it a microwave.
@@Gizza85 untrue. You shouldn't, because some metals in certain shapes will absolutely wreck it. but not all metals, and even usually "incorrect" metals like iron can be used with certain shapes. Fork? absolutely not, the thin edges will cause sparking and the tines will arch electricity. Sheet pan? Generally, yes. there are metal racks you can get for microwaves that operate just fine with no arching, and in fact quite a few steel containers widely available that're microwave safe. It's all about the edges. He says he used the microwave function, and everyone in the room agrees.
Barrys excitement over the burnese after he thought it was ruined 😂😂😂 that scream he did reminded me of Ross from Friends when he gets excited with Phoebe an Rachel (cos they trying to stop him seein Monica an Chandler) 🤣🤣🤣🤣 x
I love these ridiculously silly restrictive battles 😂 watching you 3 try to make recipes in unusual and ridiculous appliances is exactly what I needed today😂😂 The fact that you were able to make anything is hilarious. I think
Baz is breaking the rules.. no hob means "NO HOB!"
insert people in comments saying "they didn't say no hob" though it seems most people agree in the spirit of the battle it was implied no hob.
Gah, you were literally close to following your brief for a change, but then Barry happened! 🤣 Using a forth electrical cooking device is definitely breaking the rules.
The boy’s creativity in this was amazing! Better than their last kettle, microwave, toaster battle for sure. Mike is an ultimate winner, the bread and caramel were so impressive
The spirit of challenge seems very clearly "don't use a stove or oven", not "your cooking vessel must be a particular shape". Barry used a stove. Mike used the toaster, creatively.
TBH if Barry's bending counts as breaking, then so does Mike's. Not even the toaster, which was genius, but the microwave oven. It just looks like an oven lmao. Both planned for using a specific kind of kettle and microwave which broke the boundaries of a standard one. Meanwhile Jamie's was fully on scope, but all looked amazing for their restrictions!
"I feel like its gonna explode" thats how every episode should start😂😂
I really like the “no testing” of this challenge and do hope the normals do a lot more challenges like this going forwards, without having the team test them in the kitchen. It makes the whole thing a lot more intense because you can’t guarantee that all of their shenanigans will work.
you are all winners and helped me figure out how to cook something wonderful in my garage mini-kitchen whilst my home is being renovated
The sound out of Barry when he realized his sauce had worked must've woken up every dog in London lmao. He also ABSOLUTELY broke the rules. XD
The thought process and psychology of each are off the charts today…Barry: miraculous confidence, Jamie: belief in the impossible, Mike: depression and what’s the opposite of confidence? 😂 love to see their projects work out when they do!
sinfidence?
cause con = with so sin = without? sry imma show myself out
I think this is best embodied at 6:24, where mike is fully spiralling and it cuts to baz basking in his own genius 😂
5:44 lol, replaying Barry’s excited squeal
I think Mike made some unique happy accidents in his bread making by a)using a microwave to rise and bake it, b)cutting it while piping hot, before the crumb had a chance to set properly, and c)toasting it before soaking and frying it, and all that contributed to something akin to an overmixed cake where too much gluten formed, aka a very cakey pillowy bread
"no chefs in the building" means that there's a high chance for some chaos. hell yeah 😂😂
Mike, once again proving why he's my Sorted Sous Chef
Mike’s was definitely the winner today. Fantastic dish despite the odds
He's got the red apron and yet he has to resort to cheating to try and win?! I demand a recount! I believe there has been some fraudulent activities to earn Barry that red apron if he has to cheat in this video he should have the honor stripped away!
Mike's "microwave" was closer to an oven than an actual microwave, I'd say mike cheated
@@blujay1304 good point. Although, I think it is technically a microwave. But definitely bordering on cheating.
Am I alone in noticing Barry taking a bite of the red peppe chunk he had in hand while marveling at Mike making caramel... and then skewering that same piece to cook and serve?
The ad that played for me was a full episode of an animated spiderman show. Full 25min episode. I took screen shots it was awesome. Sorted with a spiderman intermission. Great episode also. I am definitely trying the microwave bread!
You should do an alphabet challenge. Each choose a letter at random and every ingredient has to start with that letter.
EVERY ingredient. no salt or pepper or oil, if that is not your letter.
@@robopecha they need to specify if they could also use like Green Pepper if their letter was G not P, or if it only applies to the exact ingredient for the letter., P for Pepper, not the type or color
Or a whole meal where every letter must be represented by an ingredient and they have a time limit to design the menu.
@@sams-pg7hj correct. has to be specified. there has to be some rule, otherwise they will just make up words to put in front.
Or they each pick a letter and they only three lettered startinf ingredients
I love how ridiculously insane this is!!! No chef would ever consider these techniques! It’s hysterical!
Gotta love the chaotic videos once in a while - this is why Sorted is the best thing going. One minute we are testing 7-course Michelin Star boxes, the next - BARRY IS BREAKING THE RULES AGAIN IN A SILLY FORMAT.
I ABSOLUTELY ADORE THESE BATTLE VIDEOS!! :D
We adore you!!!
I love the creativity !! Especially Jamie’s use of the kettle! Super impressive guys☺️
Barry broke the rules, and we all know it. Mike using the frying pan over the toaster is innovative. Period. Well done.
Barry broke the rules, but also avoided clean up. Mike definitely took this battle by leaps and bounds.
Some might argue that they need to battle for that red apron........
I think Jamie's beard is in danger...
Barry didn't break the rules he used a kettle that would be like saying no electricity! Which I think they should do - power cut battle!
@@Kez_abi he's allowed to use the kettle but not allowed to use the hob
@@Kez_abi There's a key part to a video saying "Microwave, Kettle & Toaster". They're allowed to use a kettle, no one said it couldn't be electric. Jamie played it smart, Barry just straight cheated and tried to flower it up.

Should be disqualified for that.
how? the kettle describes the instrument, not the method of heating, what do you think they did with kettles before electricity? the theme was the 3 instruments, not electrical items only or some over arcing theme. plus on a safety side, good call
@@sams-pg7hj Because Barry explicitly brought it in so he could use it as a pan on the hob, therefore planned out cheating :3 Sous-chef apron should be confiscated!

I have watched about a gazillion of your videos. THIS ONE IS MY ABSOLUTE FAVORITE SO FAR!!!
I love the creative use of limited cooking equipment! I frequently challenge myself to cook many creative things on my wood stove, since I live off-grid, and heat my home with only a wood stove. When I say, "wood stove" I don't mean one of those fancy wood kitchen stoves, I mean a firebox with a flat metal shelf on top. With creativity and ingenuity, I have baked homemade bread in a loaf pan, set on a rack, and enclosed it into a turkey roasting pan. I then laid several layers of kitchen towels on top of the lid for insulation so I was able to keep enough heat in the roasting pan to not only bake the bread, but also brown the top of the loaf.
I absolutely love creative cooking ideas, and you gentlemen definitely delivered! Well done, from across the pond, in northeast Michigan, U.S.A.
CHEERS!
I love these kind of battles.
I had to already rewind this video 3 times to see if I read Jamie saying he is going to add olive oil to a kettle, and that I wasn’t mis reading. It’s going to be a good video I can tell.
Why what could go wrong with that😂😉
@scarletd.artemis5124 why Barry using the kettle as he dis was bending the rules #safety
11:48 Absolutely breaking the rules. If hob was allowed then Jamie wouldn't have used a kettle either
This is one of the best videos you have made. Freaking love it
We bought our first microwave in the mid 80s. It came with a cookbook with recipes for everything, including Christmas bread, cake, chicken wings, cheese ball, eggs, etc. All the old microwaves came with cookbooks. Our first one was small, so a small book. Our next was large and came with a large cookbook.
Regular ovens once came with cookbooks as well. I have one for a fancy stove where you could set the temperature of the oven and it will stay there. Also gave directions on how to pull the feathers and prepare a chicken. One section was devoted to entire meals in an oven.
While I whole-heartedly agree with Barry in the regard that the camping kettle was the safest option between that and the glass kettle; it is absolutely a broken rule as the hob was off limits. I also think that Mike using a pan over the toaster was a bend of the rule and would totally be allowed as he was still using the toaster to heat his bread; not the hob. But I'd say Mike is the winner as it was the most impressive to me and via disqualification due to a rule break, Barry would be the loser (although his food did look great).
Nope. Absolutely absolutely broken! TAKE THE APRON!!
Also Jamie, I notice the lid stayed on that kettle! ;) haha.
Barry's kettle on the hob is definitely breaking the rules, you need a hob to heat it up if you need a hob to heat up the kettle , then just use the hob to cook lol
I love you guys as a chef this stuff trips me out
Barry broke the rules - he has done this too often. I think a battle with curve balls to keep his sous chef status is needed. If he fails it's up for grabs - I vote Jamie for the win.
Barry definitely broke the rules with the camping kettle. Mike is a much better example of bending the rules because he's using the toaster to heat a pan. While Barry is literally just using the hob with might as well be a pot
One of these days, Jamie will think to give his glasses a spritz, so they stop fogging up on him. BUT IT IS NOT THIS DAY!!!!
Barry!! Used!! A!! HOB!!!!
That was a very obvious way of breaking a rule guys
Jamie’s the winner for me on this one! He did a fantastic job with his and really followed the rules to a tee! 👏🏻 👏🏻
barry broke the rules period, disqualification!
Breaking the rules absolutely
Definite rule break by Barry, Jamie's Kettle works as a single unit, Barry's Kettle needs the hob to work, and the hob is banned.
Barry is 100% breaking the rules! It’s not a microwave, toaster and kettle (but also fire/hobs if you’re Barry) battle!

Break... the hob for the camping kettle takes the fun out of it, imo >.>
using the toaster for the pan was fine, though.

yes it totally takes the fun out of it. i actually stopped the video at that point and went to the comments and i dont think i wanna watch the rest of it. if there was some kind of taskmaster in the end who disqualifies him, i would be fine, but them just tasting things by themselves and barry just being there like a normal participant is completely ruining it for me.

Right. Straight to the point: Mike was bending the rules. Barry broke them.
I think the oven/microwave combo making it possible to use metal in the microwave was a bit of clickbait and breaking the rules, since that’s a huge restriction when it comes to cooking and microwaves. And Barry using a hob for his kettle was a no brainer BREAK. I’ve noticed he does that a lot lol.
barry's "kettle" was definitely a rule break

All of them have come a long way. These are all very impressive dishes.
I would say Jamie actually won since he was the only one who followed the spirit of the brief. Mike bent the rules by using the convection OVEN feature of the microwave and Barry used the cook top. Yes it was with the kettle but temperature control on a stovetop kettle is different than with a separate electric kettle.
one might even argue that he chose not to use the microwave feature on that convection oven^^

Barry's kettle on the stove top is definitely breaking the rules
I'm often restricted to the microwave, toaster and kettle as I can't actually cook. But one thing I do is cook slices of spam in the toaster. Most people think that sounds weird, but it's actually a really healthy way to cook spam. 4 or 5 minutes (depending on how good the toaster is) and it's nicely done for a couple spam sandwiches
Barry is definitely braking the rules
Barry definitely broke the rules, no question.
Barry's right, it said kettle, never mentioned it had to be electric.
He was thinking outside the box, good for him.
100% bending of the rules
I think Jamie's spot on with this. Barry was definitely break the rules because he used the hob while Mike was bending it.
I love these cooking with gadgets/appliances videos. They have to be very creative, and Mike proved it.
Barry does have to be disqualified for using the hob, but heating oil in something with a spout like that seems massively dangerous. Wouldn't he have to keep the hob on under it to keep the oil at a good temperature as well?
Kudos to Mike and Jamie though. I think if Jamie's broth had been hotter before he poured it, or the ingredients sliced thinner, the dish would have cooked as intended.
Consider the following: Barry could have just cooked the meat differently. He could have fried it in a pan on the toaster, he could have microwaved it, he could have turned the toaster on its side and grilled the skewers in the toaster. He chose the option that was not possible within the criteria to enhance the final quality of the dish as all 3 of those options would have produced a slightly worse result and for that he absolutely deserves the DQ.
Can we get Mike's Dish as a recipe? That is so fascinating I would love to try it
Barry loses. The only purpose of the kettle was to hold the oil. Could have used a saucepan for that. It wasn't cooked using a kettle, it was simply held in a kettle. 1 - Mike, 2 - Jaime. Barry is DQ'd and has to do the washing up for all 3. And buy a new kettle, 'cause I'm not making tea in something that's had fish stock in it.
100% broke the rules. By that logic Mike could argue that while camping he bakes bread in an underground oven but because he can’t start a fire - electric oven? 🤣
Oh Barry... you broke the rules. "Kettle toaster microwave" implies no hob. The rules weren't "no pots or pans" 😂 Mike's dish looked delishus. I want to cry for whoever has to clean the kettle Jamie used.
Mike was bending the rules, Barry was breaking the rules and Jamie was just crazy
Break, absolutely. Mike is bending, he's using an allowed heat source as a heat source. Barry's turning on an explicitly banned appliance, to use for the exact purpose it was banned. But of course he did, because every other time he does this he still qualifies and usually wins anyway. Going over time, using extra ingredients, submitting things 2/3 of the judges expressly agree don't count as the prompt, he always does this and it rarely matters. Love him in most scenarios, but hate him in battles because he flashes that grin and says "come ooooooon" and Ben buckles. At least this time it was judged by the three of them, Mike and Jamie aren't swayed
