  • We are doing a little Welding Positioner series this month and first up is Abraham Medrano Lead instructor of The South Coast Welding Academy. He will be doing a MIG root pass and a Flux Core fill and cap on a 12" pipe. Check out the little welding trick on the cap! Hope this helps someone out! Peace.

    Good stuff bro I did this for years in fab shops all production welding on piping. Did some with aluminum backing straps and some open root some on positioners and alot in position from mining draglines to skids.This is a Very good tutorial good job Abraham i wish this was around when I broke out 20 years ago. I had to learn by trial and error and dedication. You young welders absorb this knowledge in welding it will change in every job with different procedures.

      I highly respect and honor any welder who will take the time to pass on the trade to other upcoming interested welders because I have worked at some places where no welder would help another one because what one welder knew that others didn't he used it as a means to become top dog but I have worked at other places where welders helped each other everything from reading blueprints to how to perform their task and it worked very well for the overall factory it helped production it helped speed things along and it really added to the quality of the weld. It does not hurt to take time to help another welder you've got to remember there was a time when you as a beginner you needed somebody to help you also and you highly appreciated it when somebody took the time to help you it doesn't pay to be self-centered in life but be a cheerful giver give of your time to help other people and you will be blessed in return. This welding instructor in this video he is actually enriching the lies of other people not only for welders but also their families he's teaching people a trade that will always be in demand and that will help these young men support their families.

    Another great and helpful video from Weldtube.....Any suggestions for Flux core Root, fill, and Cap for 6G pipe??? Should we let the pipe cool down between the root and hot pass, or just tick down the settings??

    • @swedesruleallothers
      @swedesruleallothers 5 років тому

      Refer to your wps (welding procedure specification) if you have one. There should be an area that says interpass temperature. This is the maximum temperature between passes. But otherwise a rule of thumb is if you can touch the pipe with a normal tig glove without having to take your hand off because the temperature is to high you can start the next pass.

      I have used duel shield flux core wire for many years in .045 and in 1/16 size. Worm track can be caused by literally just about anything gas issue, air movement, smoke residue on your weld literally anything man. Its such a pain in the ass too because one company i worked at in Sauget IL. Any worm track at all what so ever we had to make a 4-6in repair (grind down to root and reweld). Sucked!

    • @ifitaintrounditurnitdown1735
      @ifitaintrounditurnitdown1735 4 роки тому +2

      @@nicoliscostanzo2324 If you run a 3/16 gap then yes, a slight wiggling motion is required. I like 3/16 gap on anything I run besides 6010 root. Like I said it's all preference. You can weld something 10 different ways, and still get the same result. So don't say "definitely" as to thats the only way.

    • @thomasmcnicholas8656

      Lotta hand movement on the bead pass..... drop the puddle down alittle lower..... and let the puddle just come.... little wiggle here n there as needed...... walking the cup so to speak with wirefeed is way to much work anyways especially on the bead and hot pass........
      After the hot pass, push the roll out in the Reverse direction, get comfortable on a stand support and wash it up hand..... sure to have no slag or cold lap..... just my preference.... can fill a lot with wirefeed , I’m just not a fan of rolling it away from me with the FCAW process

    Curious. When you guys switch to flux core are you running dual shield or straight flux core? And is there a reason why you can’t just keep welding with gas like the root pass?

    • @SlapHappy
      @SlapHappy 5 років тому

      The gun hes using has a gas nozzle, so its dual shielded flux core. As for the process, you can keep welding with solid wire gmaw. All depends on the situation.

    • @Ryan-wb6ne
      @Ryan-wb6ne 5 років тому

      Bryan Depiazzy
      Flux core runs a lot hotter than solid wire. You can’t weld an open root with Fluxcore, that’s why he runs hardwire for the root. Flux core has a very high deposition rate compared to hardwire(MIG), so you weld a lot faster. Thats why he switches over to fluxcore after the root.

    One caution.... gripping internally like that.... when the pipe (or flange or whatever it is) heats up from the welding, it will grow, lessening the clamping force holding it on the chuck. Has the potential to fall.
