Andrew is a fricken machine. Im also consistently amazed at the video quality of the welding itself. Seeing exactly whats happening with clear instruction is the best teaching method.
I do so much welding with AC rods trying to run DC rods is a struggle. The heat settings are so different between them and that is so important to how your able to control the puddle.
Im starting to do some light fabrication on my channel and I always learn so much. I’m a beginning welder and I don’t even do pipe but I love these videos and still pick up tips each time! Thanks for your effort
All y'all you welders listen to this, 40yr pipe welder, my company let's me teach young welders with potential, this is the same way I have them start out for PIPE, great video!!!
Great camera angles. That’s exact what you want to see. Just a tip that helped me out: it can be very easy to miss your steps while you’re capping. Pay attention to the back of that puddle - if you can see a bright white shadow/c shape behind your puddle, it means you’ve got a low spot!
It’s a trade that requires a lot of practice and attention to detail. It’s going to take time to find your style of how you weld. If you look around, you’ll see welders with the same technique but the welds look different. It’s like handwriting, we all know how to write words and we all learned how to do it in different ways, but everyone writing looks different. Give it some practice and try new things. Hell, when I started welding, I was taught to drag 6010, after watching some videos and practicing different techniques, I became comfortable with the whip method and I believe my welds look better and are more structurally solid. Don’t be afraid to try new things at all and know you are gonna mess up, when I first started the whip method, my keyholes were so huge for my root that I had to completely restart my joint. After time practice and advice I got better, I’m not perfect but my welds pass xrays and bend tests.
@@colepellegrin5491 that's very cool only thing giving me problem is horizontal it's like no matter hw I try it's not coming out good but I am still practising tho
Perm Head Satiko Gintoki what’s your procedure, do you do a 6010 root and 7018 fill and cap or are you strictly trying to practice just 6010 and what joint are you doing like a 2F or 2G?
@@colepellegrin5491 I use a 6010 rooting rod and 7018 capping rod and it's a 2g position and I use the c technique but it's not working so I decide to do the whipping technique
Overhead welding one of the hardest skills i have ever tried. They make it look easy here but it isnt i still can't make a clean looking over head although i rarely have a job where its needed. This would definitely take routine practice and a very steady hand to do well. But seeing this technique up close can help.
Did you reverse polarity for the 7010? In structural we use 7010 for welding decking and I can't explain how much better they burn on decking in reverse polarity
Another great video Jody. I wish my 62 year old eyes could see those details when I'm welding. I know the theory and have the equipment but struggle to see anymore.
Great video gentlemen, haven't actually watched it yet but I know it'll be a good one, they all are !! I wanted to be the first to post a comment !!I'm just a hobby welder from the UK, been tigging for 10 years on DC, always learn from your videos Jody, just got an AC/DC set so keen to try aluminium...or if you prefer aluminum !! Dave.
Nice video!!! On the root pass how far are you jamming the rod into the joint? I don't think I get deep enough. Looks like the end of the rod is at the bottom of the plate.Thank you
Andrew Cardin is a champion welder having won numerous awards for his welding skill, I'd listen and watch him over anyone else that's for sure, he knows his stuff.
Funny, if I had to have made a prediction before seeing the video, I would said whip on the root and steady on the hot pass but it turns out to be just the opposite.
Hey love ur videos and all the information you’ve gave us has helped me a lot. Im having trouble filling some holes in .040 thickness aluminum. Do you have any short info on that?
Jody, If you have time I have a quick question that came up today while I was practicing. I was running Hobart 7018 1/8 rods on 1/8 plate just padding beads and trying a few things 110-120 amps I really started making some beautiful welds when I would rest the flux barely against the base metal and let the rod just run dragging it I’ve seen all your videos and you talk about a short arc and I’ve never heard you say that’s bad or good to let it touch the base metal I mean these beads were perfect I could barely feel the metal dragging on the rod and just let it sink against the metal as the rod burned Good idea or is that wrong? Thank you and anyone else that comments I burned about half a ten pound box today. Haha My 6010 is getting better too Thank you so much for all you do to help us and if you haVe time to comment thank you for that too
Can you tell me what you think about using one of those diode bridges on a AC welder to convert to DC, I have a Lincoln 225 AC welder and was wondering if that would work very well,
Why whip at all? I weld 90 A 3/32 7018 overhead a lot no whip, you get hot stuff that falls off but there's still good deposition. Is this a 6010 specific thing?
Hey jody could you do a vertical uphill fillet weld with a 1/8 7018 on quarter inch plate I’m a 1st year welder at Epcot tech school and I’m going for state competition on the 15 of April and I’m having trouble with rod angle and undercut and Id appreciate if y’all could help me and forgot to add this what Is a good uphill 1/8 6010 technique to make it look very slick and pretty all in the 3f position
for 6010 uphill, do a small whip upwards keep the rod at a slight push angle just past 90 degrees to the plate. For 7018 uphill, you should do a small weave and make sure to pause on the corners to prevent undercut, rod at the same slight push angle
Wait, straight drag no whip on 6010? Or did I see that wrong. My school has us whip 6010 100% of the time. My teacher lectured me for switching from whip to drag 6010 on some run off tabs for groove plate. Artist in welding school to make the leap to construction following my Pa's advice finally :)
Overhead welding may seem a bit difficult for beginners, but with practice it turns out to be a very easy thing
That could be said about anything in existence

very useful tutorial because welding is my hobby 👍👍

Wow … really nice welding and great video especially the slow motion. Awesome 👍
Will try this technique today as i get ready for weld test. My overhead stick is atrocious.. for now

Great job guys, I'm intrigued about Andrew's welding helmet. Can I get a bit more info as I have not seen it.
@Willem - they are called "pancake" helmets. Sarge, Windy's, Empyre South all make them. A lot of pipeline welders and boilermaker welders use them.
Great video, super shot guys,
Wicked skillful welder,
Sir i wanna learn welding with your good team . Could you help me?
Excellent welding i like yours skills
Im a beginner. Is this technique only for 6010/7010? What is the difference with 7018
Very nice ...i like it this welding technique
Awesome videos !
i cant seem to tell if he’s whipping & pausing or dragging it
So for all these rods you'll keep the machine at 90? Cause it still seems too hot an my bead isn't sticking as well.I keep dropping alot of slag.

For 7018 uphill, you should do a small weave and make sure to pause on the corners to prevent undercut, rod at the same slight push angle
Dont even bother about filling in the middle of the bead, it will fill itself. Just go corner to corner pausing on each side
It's been a while, but no more weave? Back in the 80's it was 6018 and 7018.
Why do those last two beads shots at 7:12 and 7:15 look so different? The first one looked awesome, the second one was.......Different.
Lextech Lighting the first was the cover pass the second is the backside of the plate, that’s the root pass penetrating through the gap.
