When the returned the 3rd time, her issue was addressed, but it was too late. An emergency C-section was done. Her child lived, but she died. She was 24 years old. I'm mixed race and had my son at 21. The nurses at the hospital were very rude and condescending. I told my nurse my back was really hurting about a day after having my son and her response was "why? You didn't have an epidural?" They kept me there an extra day because my white blood cell was high and at the time I didn't know what that meant. I was discharged the next day just to go home and feel even worse within hours. High fever, horrible back pain. I went to a different hospital emergency room where I started to shiver uncontrollably. It was so scary. There they told me I had a kidney infection and was taken care of. I'm so grateful for the Dr's at the emergency room at Henry Mayo but this experience is part of the reason why I chose to only have one child.

I watched this with my husband who works in quality and risk management for a hospital. He handles medocal error and grievamces. He was so angered by this story he couldn't watch anymore once he heard the RN said "your wife is not a priority". Shame on that RN and doctor who not only reassured you guys this happens all the time, after being told she didn't matter with clear signs of shock and internal bleeding. One ultra sound and blood pressure reading should have been reason enough to call radiology and say get a gurney here now! 😢
We both have been in healthcare for over 13 years, and EVERY, every patient is a priority! We will carry your story with us to help make patient advocacy a bedside treatment and not something to become a case study that's reviewed and discussed later. It is widely known that black women are 3-4x more likely than their white counterparts to die during childbirth. Please do not use your experience to diminish the experience of others. While some white women have been treated poorly during their birth experience, like yourself, that doesn’t negate the fact that you are the best treated/least poorly treated group of women in the U.S. as it pertains to labor and delivery.

@@queenbee3647 your story is devastating and what you suffered was inhumane. I can't imagine how you were able to recover from such a traumatic birth experience to then have to kick straight into functioning so you can then meet the ADDITIONAL needs of your new baby! The joy that comes in the earliest moments of meeting your new perfect little person, who was also dealt the DOUBLE TRAGEDY of suffering while then to miss out being wrapped up in the arms of a healthy, happy mum. I have no words. I'm so sorry.

I had a emergency c section and lost a lot of blood but was looked after in a NHS hospital as I’m from the U.K. I couldn’t of asked for better care. I was poorly but had checks constantly. I’m shocked that in such a rich country they didn’t care. This makes me cry

This is so heartbreaking. Over 40 years ago, after the birth of my first daughter, my blood pressure went dangerously high. My attending nurse happened to come and check on me around midnight. She noticed the immediate danger that I was in and called in the doctors to help me. If not for her, I would have had a stroke or worse. I thank God for her. There are many nurses who pay attention and are there to help.

Mr. Johnson, I'm so sorry for your loss of your wonderful wife. Your family did not deserve this. But Kira gave you an important purpose, and that is to make sure this never happens to other families. You are living up to your purpose and to Kira's memory and you should be proud of that. I want to share a bit of my story to help you understand more. I had a difficult birth with my first baby girl, 31 hours of hard labor without anesthetic of any kind. My doctor went on vacation the day she was born after seeing me the night before at the hospital while I was in labor but then sent me home saying I wasn't going to have the baby. A few hours later I was back in harder labor and my doctor was gone. A stranger came into to attend to me and did not follow my instructions. Then when she was born, I began to hemorrhage. Because it happened in front of the doctors and the blood was pouring out of my womb, I think that is why they acted fast. However, they gave me no anesthetic and began to scrape my womb. I had to ask them to now medicate me because the baby was out of me and not in danger.(I had learned that medicating the mother during birth could adversely affect the baby)So, they medicated me, did a DNC, then packed my uterus with bandages. The following day the nurse who attended me was extremely abusive and would try to hurt me in any way she could with the catheter, the bandages and so on. I was very weak and felt my life could be in danger, but I survived. 4 years later I had another pregnancy and a different doctor. That doctor was way more conscientious. He had my file from the first birth. He said, "Did you know that you were near death from the first birth? Did they ever tell you?" I said no. They had kept it a secret from me that I almost bled to death for 4 years. It was only when I got pregnant again that I found out. I might have been like your Kira. The point is, something is wrong with the medical/hospital system that needs to be looked into and corrected on SO MANY LEVELS. Although racism may or may not have been an issue(my husband was a very dark-skinned Hispanic/Native American and was present for her birth and we were often discriminated against), I still felt the way they handled my birth was negligent. So I want to thank you for starting your foundation and congratulate you on your work. Someone needed to address this and clearly its your life path. Bless you. I will keep your family in my prayers.

This is horrible, i work in OB and and i know this would be less likely to happen at a smaller hospital where the care is more personalized. What many people fail to understand is that at larger facilities you're treated more like a number because of poor staffing ratios, ive been there and tjats why I left large hospitals. I really love what I do and love teaching and caring for my patients. Any nurse that can say something like that neess to find another career. And the fact that she should've been a priority says even more about her skils, all her symptoms pointed to something more serious. In OB we all know how critical the immediate postpartum, esp c-sections, can be. Sorry for you loss and I hope you can find comfort and peace through all of this.

Unfortunately, I am very aware of conscious and unconscious bias in American healthcare.
My mother was “ignored” repeatedly while in the hospital as she screamed out in pain. We repeatedly asked the doctor and nurses to find out why her pain was increasing, even as they gave her pain meds. It was only after a week of her being in excruciating pain that a hospital executive finally listened to us and ordered further tests that finally showed she had suffered a series of strokes, which was the cause of the pain she was experiencing…
I pray for this young man and his family and I advise families to be outspoken advocates for your loved ones. Demand action even if it means complaining to the hospital administration. 🙏🏾

I feel so bad for you. Your wife sounds amazing! You are amazing too, as a husband and a dad. I had an extremely high risk pregnancy. My doctor got too freaked and dumped me, I was two weeks late with nowhere to go! I got sent to a strange hospital I didnt know, with no doctor, and they were hostile to me. I finally found a doctor who agreed to deliver my baby. I presented with four signs that I needed an emergency c-section but no, they let me labor for 97 hours! My labor did not progress. They forced a vaginal delivery on me. It was like a butcher shop in the OR. I was so traumatized by that birth I had nightmares for the next two years. I wish you peace and all good things for those sweet boys.
