    The custom built models are a treat to behold. If only a manufacturer would produce them for real. I would pay good money if a big name company made a model of that Precursor Tank (ideally Bachmann since they've had a good streak with the Precedent and Coal Tank).

      Offering the OO Precursor Tank as a "buy one, get two free" promotion would also be great! Basically, if an OO modeler purchases the Precursor Tank, they get OO models of the Precursor 4-4-0 and Experiment 4-6-0 classes free with no extra charge.

    There's just something about Crewe's standardisation which makes all their classes look uniform yet unique. Excellent shots Steve, on a beautiful layout!

      Thanks! Yes there really is - amongst other things the LNWR designs always seemed to have that square protrusion in front of the cab - from an Improved Precedent to a Super D!

    One of the most important differences between a simple modeller and an artist can be clearly seen when every scene, every sound and every angle conveys a unique feeling and creates an atmosphere that could never be explained, though it definitely gives you the impression of having been there yourself. That's art, that's exactly what this channel offers. Thanks a lot for sharing, Steve. Greetings from the Atlantic coast of Argentina.

    I have to declare an interest because three of the LNWR locos (lovely vintage models, originally collected by Ron Mitchell) were lent by me. What Steve has done with them is something else however! The atmosphere, the lighting and the subtle sound mixing just takes my breath away.

    • @johnd8892

      Thanks for enabling a really notable video to be made for the rest of us.
      I think the Coal Tank and Precedent are Bachmann origin , but can you tell us the origins of the others?
      I am guessing London Road.

    • @MrTBrearley
      @MrTBrearley 3 роки тому +2

      @@johnd8892 John, correct on the Precedent and Coal Tank, and I think the 0-8-0 belongs to Steve's dad. He'll confirm. As to the Geo. V, Claughton and Precursor tank, I'm pretty sure they pre-date London Road and are white metal in origin - certainly heavy in the hand. GEM? Millholme? You may have a better idea. Ron originally collected them in the mid 80s and thinks a man by the name of Swann was involved in either the building or painting, so they may even go back to the late seventies. Pre airbrush, of course, but amazing deep finish and they have a great 'vintage' feel. They also got a lovely rich finish on a Royal Scot which appears in the next part. I asked Steve if he'd apply some weathering magic to this model and he's achieved a beautiful subtle effect with soot along the top of the boiler. Treat in store! Do share the video if you can, I think Steve has created something really remarkable. T

    I clocked your clever transformation of Nevil Grove before reading the description in the comments, very well done. I liked how your camera angles were done so that no distintive Nevil Grove features appeared............I read the books about Piccolo Pete Johnsons career on the railway firing expresses over those awsome hills, wow that was hard work. Thanks alot anyway, all the best Dave.

    I really enjoy seeing the banker drop back as the train reaches the summit, just it was on the actual railways. This can be done only by using digital control. I would hope that one day it might be possible to have the sight of a slip coach coming off an express and stopping in the platform while the express continues it's journey! The sound, and how you match the motion almost always exactly every time, is a joy to watch, including the souind of the pulling of the signal levers in the box, and the chit-chat of the crew, all making for tremendous realism. Heritage railways are all very well, but they often do not have the quantity of track or rolling stock to make it as it was in previous times, whereas you get it to as near as possible in model form as it used to be on British Railways!! Thank you!!

  • @conistonoldman

    Bravo! What a superb production, and what a great idea to make a series of tributes to the Shap route. It's good to see Lucknow and the Coal Tank get a good run out in a realistic setting. They certainly look great - I have both but sadly no LNWR layout to run them on.
    The "vintage" (I remember these from my youth in the 1970s LOL) locos are also wonderful to see in action. Very nicely painted and lined GEM kits (though the Claughton isn't GEM I think?). Unfortunately, the wobble that both the George and Precursor suffer is rather obvious when running at speed. But then I would probably wobble if I had to run fast these days.
    The PC carriages still look pretty good, despite the lack of 3D moulding. I thought the middle coach was a Ratio until I read one of your replies. I recognise the Midland coaches as Ratio though. Again, nice to see a mixed rake, although did the Midland and GWR coaches normally run over Shap?
    I shall return to this video from time to time and look forward to the next two installments.

    • @NEVILLEGROVE
      @NEVILLEGROVE  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks very much for the insightful comment and thanks for watching! All the kit built locos and carriages are on loan from MrTBrearley and are wonderful things - a real privilege to have on the layout. I doubt that the Midland / GW stock frequently appeared, but my educated guess is that they both may have turned up on cross country services from time to time?!

    Excellent model railway. Just one thing missing. There is a commercial recording lineside of Shap before the summit with moorland birds and sheep sounds before and after the train passes. Would give the illusion of reality if added as background sound.(In season)

    • @NEVILLEGROVE
      @NEVILLEGROVE  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks Brian, glad you enjoyed and thanks for watching. I actually have used the ambient sounds from several recordings taken at Scout Green / Shap by Peter Handford. Curlews, sheep, crows and Skylarks can be heard throughout, but are often drowned out by the train! These sounds can be more clearly heard in the quieter bits such as at 30 seconds in 👍👍👍

    The real pity was that none of those engines were preserved in this reality! George the Fifth deserved preservation,as just the 5000th Crewe production,but the LMS,had the Midland antagonistic attitude,so the LNWR and L&Y had to take a back seat! So much lost,and those models don't do justice to the magnificence of the Premiere Line! And on this side of the pond,there was the Pennsylvania Railroad,also an American standard of excellence,now gone! Thank you 😇 😊!!

    A beginners question here, are the rake of LNWR coaches shown being pulled by Lucknow a custom paint and numbering modification ? I find them very attractive and if I cannot buy a rake of them, then I would like to try and make them myself. So possibly some kind soul will answer a couple of questions for me.
    1) What make and model coaches are being used here?
    2) What colours (shades), I am thinking that they look both period correct and accurate, are being used on the LNWR coaches?
    3) Who makes the decals use on these coaches ?
    Suffice to say, a very enjoyable video, and well shot...LoL, it has obviously piqued my interest and raised a lot of questions with me....:)

    • @MrTBrearley
      @MrTBrearley 3 роки тому +2

      Jeff, I may be able to help. The coaches were made by PC (sides?). They were printed in full colour and very accurately onto plastic I believe, with a base of some kind of metal. Because it's 2D printing, the door handles are not separate as on a modern kit, but a graphic representation with shading. Some compromises therefore, but the lining is super accurate so if they're well lit (as they are so brilliantly on this video) they can look superb. I bought these three on Ebay and they turn up from time to time as either built models (as in my case) or as kits. Hope this helps. Tim

    Only one discrepancy - no flat bottom rail on the L &NWR, especially as the Railway rolled their own.
    The station sign is wrong it should read Shap. Otherwise the locomotives and rolling stock is are just superb.
    The banking engine at the back of the train is a wonderful touch. Never seen it depicted before on a montage.
    It’s spelled Claughton. Not Cloughton.

    • @NEVILLEGROVE
      @NEVILLEGROVE  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks Alistair, glad you enjoyed! The layout is usually set mid to late 1960’s and was back dated for this video where possible. I assume the rail was produced by the LNWR at Workington? The famous plant went on to supply most, if not all the rail for BR, Network Rail and around the world. Recently now sadly closed of course.

  • @TallboyDave
    @TallboyDave 3 роки тому +2

    It's a strange thing; I don't particularly like BR lined black as a livery; but LNWR lined black is almost identical, and I really like it.

    • @MrTBrearley
      @MrTBrearley 3 роки тому +1

      What a good point! You made me realise I think exactly the same way. It was Riddles who chose the lining, wasn't it? Obviously hoped he'd capture the elegance but it doesn't quite come off for some reason. Still love the 'Standards' mind you!
