- #Spamfest was in full swing from 13-15th of August 2021! If you missed it, not to worry as here are the highlights of no less than 9 of Bulleid's air-smoothed stunners in action on Neville Grove!
So what was #spamfest ??? Well @NEVILLEGROVE , @BlufferstoBuffers and @Flyingscotsdan teamed up with @HornbyModelRailways to host a weekend of Social Media SpamCan goodness. Hundreds of Instagram posts were shared from all over the world featuring original Bulleids Pacifics in N, OO, and O Gauges and at 1:1 scale.
Hornby supported the event by sharing themed posts and offering brand new Un-rebuilt Merchant Navy, 35017 "Belgian Marine" as a giveaway prize. The loco had been treated to Custom Deluxe heavy weathering in the Neville Grove Works and can be seen in this video.
Starring spamcans in order of appearance:
21C2 Union Castle - Weathered and re-named by Neville Grove (for Bluffers to Buffers)
35012 United States Lines - Weathered and re-named by Neville Grove (for Bluffers to Buffers)

Oliver Bulleid is my favorite British locomotive designer by far. Stuff like this and the Q1s looks so great and I love how unique his designs were.
For sure, all his stuff was designed from the ground up - he didn’t believe in evolution of predecessors designs! Good luck 🤞
Epic! Just epic. The variety of trains, the variety of weathering, the variety of shots - a great watch
Thanks MrT 👍
What a Smooth Southern treat, all manner of types, liveries and dirt. Double headed section was brilliant, shades of the old S & D, magic 👍🏻❤
Thanks Bob glad you enjoyed enough to stay to the end! Yes reminiscent of Bude and Biggin Hill I thought, although they probably didn’t get up that sort of speed?!
#spamfest such an incredible layout, and such incredible locos running round, absolutely adore the spamcans!
They’re great right?! Good luck!
Woah... So many spam cans for this year's #spamfest ! Love the layout
Lots and lots. We even shared a tin of fried spam for breakfast 👍Good luck 🤞
@@NEVILLEGROVE Do you have a favourite of them all on the layout?
All those different liveries and weathering really brings out what striking looking locos they are #spamfest
Thanks and yeah they are very striking indeed. Good luck 🤞
I can't get over how good they all look. I need to get my Adams Radial sorted so I can get it weathered. #spamfest
Thank you! Yeah weathering really enhances an already great model. Good luck 🤞
Quite a collection indeed!!
They look stunning of course - fantastic 'mixed freight' engines that they were ..... !!
Thanks for sharing.
Al.
Thanks for watching Alan, alas most were visiting from customers and have gone back to their respective owners!
I’m blown away by the level of detail here, especially with the synchronisation which seems to be accurate even down to the level of the train and it’s composition of bogies behind the loco. Outstanding!
Many thanks for watching Gerard, that’s very astute of you to notice and much appreciated for you to say so. I do go to a lot, (probably too much 😂) effort to try and get those sorts of details right.
Well that’s easy, you listen to the sound track count the click
Any clacks = No. of bogies, so put them on your train but getting the speed right must be a nightmare.
Always love seeing Bullied pacifics, they might not be everyone's cup of tea but they are one of my favorites. #Spamfest
What’s not to like? I guess my absolute favourites are the louder engines such as the Standards, but I still love a Bulleid. Good luck!
The videos you make are brilliant. Very professional looking. 😃
That’s super kind thanks! 🙌
#spamfest what an absolutely fantastic railway! Such a unique setup with the mainline passing over the top, love it!
Thanks Jaimie, glad you like the layout and good luck!
Love this #SpamFest! This is my Grandad's favourite engine - would make a fantastic present for him.
Great, glad your enjoying the weekend! Good luck! 👍
Stunning details! Can't wait to see more of it! #spamfest
Thanks a lot 👍Good luck 🤞
Words fail me, this is truly fantastic. Thank you for sharing this with all of us.
A pleasure David, thanks for watching and for the comment 👍
Some absolutely wonderful #spamcan action here! Bravo!
Thank you very much Nick, glad you enjoyed 👍
#spamfest has been epic! Great job guys!!
Thank you and we’re so glad that you’ve enjoyed it! Good luck!
Absolutely breath-taking! I had to remind myself more than once that this is a model railway. The level of detail is fantastic. And I love the shot of two trains at 9:56.
Awesome! Great to hear you enjoyed it 👍
Now that’s one hell of a fleet! Thedetail of the weathering is spot on true credit to you. #spamfest
Alas most were here visiting from customers 😢 but thanks for the super kind comment - and for entering the giveaway! GOOD LUCK! 🤞
#spamfest Love the care and craftsmanship of your weathering. It truly brings the models to life!
Many thanks indeed! Good luck 🤞
I knew this was going to be great before I started watching it and I wasn’t disappointed!
I’m glad you enjoyed, thanks!
@@NEVILLEGROVE I know how much effort goes into making videos and you take it to a new level with all your little audio tricks.
It's amazing seeing all the Bulleid pacifics for #Spamfest
I'm not confident in my skills to weather anything myself yet but your fleet looks incredible
Thanks very much! This fleet was only together temporarily as most were being weathered for customers and they are back home now. Nice to have them all here at once though! Good luck 🤞
Stunning video (as ever!) Well done for putting together the Festival of Spam! I’m thoroughly enjoying it #SpamFest
Thanks Mike, a pleasure, we’re enjoying it too. Good luck 🤞
I love the history behind the Spamcans. They started out as a sneaky way for Bullied to get around war restrictions and became some of the finest Express locomotives on the entire British network. And while they looked beautiful both in and out of their air-smoothed casing, I do prefer the air-smoothed look. It's great to see them getting their own special weekend. Happy #spamfest
Happy #spamfest to you too! Good luck, thanks for watching 👍
They are very charismatic machines, thanks for watching 👍
@@NEVILLEGROVE Thank you for wishing me luck, it was really fun to spend the weekend forgetting about exams and just watching these magnificent machine thunder by. Happy #spamfest to you and to everyone who took part.
@@user-lo5tj3ml6y Good luck with your exams too! 🤞Glad this provided some respite, but hopefully not too much of a distraction 😬
@@NEVILLEGROVE Thank you! Hope you have a wonderful week.
Some cracking work here! Have loved #spamfest
Brilliant thanks Matty! So have we 👍
Unthinkable that people once upon a time thought the Spamcans were "ugly". Excellent footage of models with prototypical rakes, expecially loved the parcel train. #Spamfest!
I know! They are stunning looking machines! Thank you very much and good luck! 👍
Incredible video for #spamfest, the weathering in particular is exceptional. This weekend was just brilliant with the community on here and Instagram showing their support for Bulleid’s magnificent machines. Keep up the fantastic work!
Thanks Darren for watching and for your support, glad your enjoying #spamfest - good luck 🤞
What an amazing video, a very enjoyable watch! #Spamfest
Brilliant thanks Matthew! Good luck with the comp!
Another awesome video, especially liked "Clan Line" in it`s original guise as where I live it regularly passes hauling the Belmond Pullman.👍👍👍👍
Thank you very much, glad you enjoyed it. Clan Line actually came through here the other day with the Pullmans, still a wonderful sight and sound.
#spamfest well done chaps! Been a cracking event! Keep up the good work and happy modelling! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Right up your street this! Glad your enjoying and good luck!
#spamfest oh man I would love to have one of these , everything about this design and the aesthetics that go along with it
This machine is a BEAST ,
So cool
They are distinctive, charismatic machines. Good luck in the comp! 👍
Ah just another one. In Woking the Odeon cinema was very close to the station & when I was courting my future wife we were sometimes in there when one of these passed through & I tell you that cinema literally shook as it streaked towards Waterloo or the west country. My god what days they were.
That sounds magnificent! Wonderful memories that stick with you I bet.
Happy #spamfest 😍 another EPIC video Steve! All the liveries with all the different coaches… it’s just so good 😭 consider my hat in the ring for the competition!! 🙏🏼
Good luck my man! Would love to see Belgian Marine hurtle through Breakspear! 🤞
Absolutely stunning locomotives builled majestic merchant navy #spamfest. Would love to win it for my father who loved the southern region in 50s and 60s living around Bristol and Devon area.
Thanks Harry, good luck, I bet your father has some great memories spotting round there back in the day 👌
One day I’ll be brave enough to weather a locomotive! This is incredible! #spamfest
Thanks Matt, good luck with winning this one so you don’t have to!
Beyond the top notch worth of Neville Grove in its whole, the movie is beautiful! So illusive of reality that it took me eight minutes to figure out there wasn't smoke.
Just Brilliant!!!
Thanks Colin!
Great collection for #spamfest and brilliant weathering!
Thank you Robby and good luck!
This video has almost everything, which makes short couplings even more desirable ...
Thank you very much. I’m gradually going through my fleet and adding Hunt couplings. They’re much better on the eye!
Great camera work and excellent audio synching! And your weathering is brilliant as always, lovely to see.
Thanks Mike , glad you enjoyed!
Southern locomotives have always been my favourite, especially th3se #spamfest locos!!
They are pretty special, thanks for watching and good luck 🤞
@@NEVILLEGROVE thank you! looking forward to more videos
#Spamfest love your videos. The sound you add to them is great. Would be great to see a layout tour sometime.
Thanks George and good luck 🤞 One day I will do one, just need to clear this lengthening backlog of footage that needs editing! 😅
Love the weathering on these trains, you made them look really realistic. #spamfest
Cheers Myles! Good luck!
A fleet to be envious of! I hope to start my collection of them soon! #spamfest
Thank you but alas, only 3 of these are mine - although I am lucky to have them! All of the others were being weathered for customers & Hornby.
I just love this class, what a well made video
Thanks very much - they’re great aren’t they?!
The most stunning video of an 'off the shelf' ( with a little help) model locos ive seen.
Thank you very much, the Hornby MN’s in particular are extremely high quality models - highly recommended 👌
Great Collection! 34006 Bude can be a unique future addition but the other Locos are really great in their own way! #Spamfest
Would have loved to have had Bude for the last shit of the double headers - reminiscent of the last Special over the S&D with 34006. The owner of many of the Bulleids in this video has just purchased Bude because of its long deflectors, you never know he might send that for weathering one day too…
Belgian Marine is so beautifully weathered! #Spamfest
Thanks MrT and good luck with the giveaway! Glad you’ve entered 👍👍👍
Spam spam spam spamitty spam! wonderful spam! Stunning.
A lovely run of the various liveries on these locos. I'm equally impressed with your layout, too, as it looks marvellous as I watch the scenics pass by on the video.
Just marvelling at your work.
Thanks John!
Beautiful scenery. Nice job on the sound effects for the trains too! Top notch! #Spamfest
Thanks very much indeed. Good luck! 👍
Express passenger blue with blood and custard coaches 👌😌
A great combo yeah and the blue really suits the original Bulleids I reckon. If it was staying longer I would have filmed it on the pullmans too with Devon Belle headboard and observation car.
Great to see so many on one layout would love to see on my layout #spamfest
Thanks! I was lucky to have them visit for weathering at the same time, it was for that reason #spamfest was spawned. Alas, all but 3 have gone back to their owners now. Anyway, good luck 🤞
Fabulous! That’s the way to film a model railway......
Thanks very much indeed, and thanks for watching!
#spamfest, always enjoy the boys form across the pond. cheers from the states!
-Will
Thanks Will! Glad you enjoyed the video 🙌
Absolutely brilliant weathering. Would love to win #spamfest for my son. He's had a difficult few years with his health
Thanks Chris and good luck, I hope your son is getting better now.
Thanks for weathering my 28xx and 13xx steve they are beautiful #spamfest
Looks great! I've always found the term 'unrebuilt' amusing as it's completely redundant as every locomotive ever built that didn't have any extensive rebuilding should be called unrebuilt. As far as I'm aware, it doesn't seem to be a term applied to the streamlined Stanier Coronations before their equally dramatic transformation. Anyway, the Spamcans look great!
Very good point. They should be always be described as per Mr Bulleid....air smoothed and designed to go through carriage washers. Revolutionary locos sadly wrecked by backward lookward natiionalised British Railways.
@@johnabbott9401 Indeed, although I presume the oil-filled, chain valve gear housing being problematic as well as fires occuring inside the casing caused by the leaking oil and accumulations of brake dust, etc. influenced BR's decision, but one wonders whether these things couldn't have been rectified. Also, the rebuilts suffered from hammer-blow which the 'unrebuilts' 😊 didn't. I do find the rebuilt MC/BB and MN attractive too though.
Very true and thank you! Regarding the Staniers, I suppose they had very little mechanical modifications, effectively just the cosmetic streamlined casing, whereas the rebuilt Bulleids had many of the original mechanical features replaced - not least the chain driven valve gear. The visual transformation was indeed just as dramatic though, if not more so!
@@NEVILLEGROVE Thanks for posting! Really love the syncing of the sound of the real thing with the shots of the layout.
@@novakingood3788 my pleasure, glad you enjoyed 👍
Lovely layout and engines!! Great shots as well - would love to see a 'making of' video to see how you got them :) #spamfest
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed, I will do a how to one day - maybe once I’ve got through this backlog of videos to edit 😅
Ridiculously brilliant work........:)
Haha thank you 😊
I have one bullied pacific and it’s an old one a limited edition one from 1995 although it doesn’t run the best anymore it’s certainly one of my favourites! #spamfest
Excellent! Every model railway needs a spamcan in one form or another! Good luck 🤞
Love all of your weathering and the spam cans all look fabulous #SpamFest
They are great models, the weathering helps to bring out the wealth of detail too. Thank you and good luck 🤞
Love it , how can anyone think a spam can was ugly. I noticed with the merchant navy class has three types of body 1 the original with no smoke deflectors and widows peak front. 2 the original update with smoke deflectors, redesigned cab and more traditional spamcan look. Then the rebuild. When I look at these locomotives and if you didn't know you, you would have thought that they had been built in reverse.
There are also many detail differences too, even in the spamcans with deflectors too. For example the front valance is sometimes cut away on later versions, the safety valve arrangement and tender types. Hornby have done a great job in replicating these details 👏
Yes your so right I noticed the smoke deflectors on Blackmore Vale, Exeter and Bude are like small, medium and large. Lovely fleet of spam cans you have
Very nice, if you wanted to model Spams on the Exeter line bound for Ilfracombe and Wadebridge or Padstow then you need disks on the centre buffer beam and centre over the smokebox number to show them, then you can have the Devon Belle with the observation car on the rear. Exeter Central was the limit for Merchant Navy's but they worked Waterloo to Exeter Central.
Thank you yes that is the plan for a future video, I have the headboards and the observation car for the Devon Belle + some stock for the Night Ferry and a headboard for that too 👌
@@NEVILLEGROVE Nice one.
I’ve enjoyed that so much (& #spamfest) I’m gonna watch it again💨💨💨💨
Superb as always 👍
Cheers John b😎
Thanks for watching John, and good luck - it would be great to see Belgian Marine on Colwhich Junction! 🤞
#SpamFest I have complied with the comp rules so hope it's enough to be in with a shout. Love what you manage to pull off here outstanding chum . Like you and many other, I just love Spamcans and have a few, cheers Paul at Sandling Junction.
Hey Paul! Glad you’ve entered and good luck! Thanks for the kind words too! 👍👍👍
@@NEVILLEGROVE I Hope I did the entry all correctly Steve, I was sad that I never realized until the last minute what Spamfest was all about. If you do another something like this I'd love to get involved, cheers Paul.
Wow, Very impressive, I hope I can get my layout looking half as good. #Spamfest
I’m sure you will! But thanks and good luck 🤞
#SPAMFEST looks absolutely fabulous, great job as always
Thank you very much and good luck 👍👍👍
That’s quite the collection and some awesome weathering #spamfest
Thanks Logan, indeed a lovely collection but only temporary as all but 3 were visiting for weathering. Good luck 🤞
Fantastic nice video 👍👍🚂👌.
Greetings Gert
Fantastic video, some great detailing but the water in the canal is the same level before the lock, in the lock and after the lock! Thank you for your time in making, editing and sharing👍
Thanks for watching, not sure what you mean about the lock, 🤔 but I don’t think both levels were shown here, it drops by about an inch and a half to go under the steel girder railway bridge. The lock gate is open at the top, so the level in the lock is the same as in the top pound (both a lot higher than the lower pound).
@@NEVILLEGROVE Watching a second time, (which was just as pleasant as the first time) I can see you are quite correct. As mother used to say "look before you leap" I apologise, please put it down to the wrong angle, a small screen and old age.👍
Wonderful video with excellent weathering! #spamfest
This is a really special video! I was awestruck. Thankyou.
Thank you for watching!
Wow! Some of those pictures look like they were real at one stage!! #spamfest
Thanks very much and for watching!
#spamfest the weathering just makes the locos stand out it's amazing 🙂
Thanks very much! Good luck 🤞
#spamfest another bloody brilliant video and an awesome prize up for grabs, fingers are crossed!!
Thanks David! Good luck with Belgian Marine! 🤞
@@NEVILLEGROVE Not a winner this time but love your work, always looking amazing!!
Spam and cheese - thanks to all involved - brilliant stuff! #spamfest
Cheers Clive, it’s been a blast, thanks and good luck 🤞
#SPAMFEST issuch a wonderful thing. Absolutely brilliant!!
They are beautiful! I especially love Union Castle in SR Black. #Spamfest
Yeah! That is “The Special One” with its cast red plates (from Fox Transfers).
@@NEVILLEGROVE Wow, someday, I would love to be able to do that.
Fantastic realism, an awesome job, well done. #Spamfest
Thanks Simon, good luck with winning the loco 👍

Even though I’d class myself as a Midland man, these don’t ‘alf look absolutely belting!! Awesome film as always. Imagine what you can do with 6 37’s!! 😉
Covering all the # bases there Ian? 😂😂😂 Good luck though, and yeah looking forward to that brace of tractors 🚜🚜🚜🚜🚜🚜
I was a youngster in Weymouth 1960 to the end of mainline steam in 1967 and I NEVER saw a blue Spam can.
Hi David, yeah it was a very short lived colour scheme as it didn’t weather very well. I think all the Blue SpamCans had gone by the early 1950’s and all of the Merchant Navy’s had been rebuilt by 1959 (the “Light Pacifics” never wore the blue). You would have seen some great stuff though!
Love a spam can they always look so elegant #spamfest
#spamfest is just mega, as is your layout. Nicely done 👍
Cheers Mat! Glad you’ve enjoyed spamfest, we have too. Good luck 🤞
#Spamfest My son has just started his a Hornby collection and would absolutely LOVE this!!! He’s also loving the videos, thank you!
Hi Laura, glad he enjoys the vids - hope you don’t mind them too much either! Good luck with the giveaway 🤞
What a superb way to start #spamfest!
Thanks for watching the vid buddy!
The trains are awesome, but the way you captured them made me write this. The sound, the framing, the cuts, the way you follow gives them such mass and presence. I don't even like running trains videos with the exception of Oscar Paisley who raises "Toy" trains to a new level.
Thanks very much indeed, and thanks for watching! I'll have to check out Oscar's stuff
Absolutely superb video 🔥 🔥 🔥 👏 👏 👏 Spam Spam Spam Spam
Thanks Tom!
Excellent. Wonderfull filming. A couple of niggles, no corridor connections between coaches, and not every loco appears to have a crew on board. But wonderfully nosalgic and realistic.
Thanks very much indeed, and thanks for watching!
Bossing it, as always! Awesome vid - sublime locomotives!
Sublime locos indeed, will never get tired of the mighty spams.
Spamfest bloody nice work there sir...
Happy #spamfest from Kingsmoor Stu. We love to see it, keep it up lads
Happy #spamfest !!! Thanks and good luck 👍👍👍
Thank you for #spamfest a wonderful weekend
A great weekend, thanks for the excellent content you shared!
Excellent video as always. What a collection of Merchant Navy locos you have! Been eying up the Hornby Aberdeen Commonwealth for a while, your video might've just cost me a few pounds. 😂😂😂 Cheers, John.
Thank you very much! But alas, only 3 of these are mine - although I am lucky to have them! All of the others were being weathered for customers & Hornby. Aberdeen Commonwealth (renumbered here to Union Castle has gone back) but a beautiful model. Highly recommended - you won’t regret it!
Fantastic my favourite engine
They are great, and the Hornby Merchant Navy is particularly superb 👌👌👌
Amazing locomotives this #Spamfest
A nice selection, although a malachite one is conspicuous by its absence 🤔
Fabulous !!
Thanks Alan 👍
Great editing and cinematography.
Thanks very much, it takes a while but I especially enjoy filming visiting locomotives such as most of these.
Wehey #spamfest looking incredible I do have to say
Thanks very much! Hope you enjoyed #spamfest too 👍
