The song (and album)? YES!!! But the line-up? One masterpiece (1990), and then straight into chasing the Black-album footsteps for 3 albums. Then Nick left and- R I S K.....
The videographer knows exactly where to be for every part of this song. Post up in front of Marty for solos, right up in Nick's grill for sick drum parts and all artsy fartsy low angle for Dave's sick bass licks. Amazing time capsule for an amazing band in their prime. Long live this line-up as one of the best ever in metal history.
god damn, i wrote a whole page of text to explain it but deleted it by accident. in short, just compare a guy like virgil donati vs a guy like Lars Ulrich. both have a distinct sound and they are far apart skill wise....actually very far :) . the more you listen, the more you learn the nuances.
I got in a long, ugly battle on UA-cam a few years back with a guy who said Ellefson wasn't a great bassist...because he "didn't write his parts". Some people just don't get it.
HolyIFO More interesting??? He’s just a robot playing fast . Being a great guitarist isn’t about speed at all ( It’s not like Marty can’t play so fking fast too , lol )
Dude , so sorry , I thought you were talking about Chris Broderik and not about Chris Poland . Poland vs Marty is a matter of taste , but I still like Marty a little bit more , even considering advanced music theory.
I'll have to agree. I do not trust a word Dave says when it comes to his past band members. Friedman leaving I understand, he was just tired of thrash metal
He had the groove of a drum god.....one of a kind!!!....loved to headbang while playing , and get the crowd going....he was what was the best about 90's precision metal.....he was my perfect drummer!!!!......gave it all every minute of his life!!!....see you on the other side my metal brother....☺
Never said Drover sucks, just said Menza was better. I'm also a megadeth fan, I like Drover too, but LIVE, he doesn't look like he's enjoying the show at all. I saw them in 2012 in CTE Tour, HE ROCKS the drums, but his face seems like he's just doing for the money, no energy, no headbang, no feels. Well, thats my opinion, dude! Cheers!
Henrique G. That's kinda just Drover's personality. In backstage videos, he's just kind of a shy guy, very introvert. Both are good, but Menza is definitely a better performer.
1:10 I have that shirt! It’s the Rust In Peace tour shirt with the rare “Oxidation Of The Nations” back print. I much prefer this one over the common back print with the two toxic symbols. I’ve had trouble finding other people with that shirt so it was awesome to see some guy just randomly walk across the screen wearing it 😂
I still can't believe Nick is gone. Every time I see Nick playing it makes me depressed and it's sad that such a great player was left obscure behind his counterparts. Well, maybe that's because of the whole genre or maybe because of the band he was in. R.I.P. Nick Menza.
siempre tuve la esperanza de que volviera a megadeth... una pena. pero para mi siempre será el baterista legendario del grupo. descansa en paz nick, quizá algún día si existe algo similar a la vida después de la muerte te pueda escuchar junto a gar samuelson
I honestly don't know whether the drums, the bass or the guitar is my favourite part. This piece is truly astounding. Only discovered this song two weeks ago though I've been listening to Megadeth for over two years.
this video is legendary, i mean rip nick man, he is just so fucking good, and this is the only fucking recording of five magics being played with the og line up, the rust in peace aniversary with broderick and drover will never come close, and holy fuck dude marty is fucking melting my face at the beginning, fuck!! whoever recorded this is a fucking legend man fuckin hell i mean holy shit
Same here. I've heard people describe the intro as filler, but it provides breathing room for the listener after 'Take No Prisoners' and gives the song a mysterious quality. No other line up of musicians can lend such gravity to a song with such cheesy lyrics. The rhythms are exotic, the otherworldly solos. Its so bizarre that they decided to pare down their songwriting in the next album. I guess they were trying to cater to what they thought were public tastes? As of 2017, no band has released an album of the same quality as Rust in Peace, released in 1990.
So tight. Nick and Marty upped the stakes and game. What an album that Rust is...The first time I heard it I was floored. There was nothing like it at the time.
this to me...was the greatest megadeth lineup: Marty Friedman on Lead Guitar Dave Ellefson on Bass Nick Menza on Drums and Obviously Dave Mustaine as Rythym Guitar/Vocals
2:29 who else played Dave's part with his mouth :D and then the part at 04:04 till 04:37 It's juts amazing to watch Nick drum! Love the single bass drum crashes and then how flawlessly he stars doing the gallop part! Just amazing !
I love that Nick is playing like if the stadium was already full with people haha
Leo Martín bro I know how he feels, I play for my bedroom walls just the same
That’s how you practice
Music savages such raw power.
While Shawn Drover played like he's practicing at home even when its full of people.
Vic Rattlehead hahah! That’s not cool bro. He did have fun in Megadeth.
Nick menza is beating those drums like they owe him money!
Yes, 4:24
He was such a great drummer. With soul...
Nick Menza is on one here amazing power.
Probably did, haha!
Your so right Dude.
this line-up.. this song. it's sacred.
The Best Megadeth Line Up
Hands down the best Megadeth line up.
Best lineup in thrash metal. I don't think you could pick and choose a better group.
I prefer poland but I really like this lineup too
The song (and album)? YES!!!
But the line-up?
One masterpiece (1990), and then straight into chasing the Black-album footsteps for 3 albums.
Then Nick left and-
R I S K.....
For years this was the only footage to exist of Megadeth playing this song.
Matthew Neiner It’s still hard to come by footage. This video is a gem.
I think it has to do with Dave M becoming a Christian and not wanting to play “Five Magics”.
Still is
This is still the only good one. That one live performance with the worst lineup was gross. This one is amazing
@@VianoMusicAcademy Indeed, same with him saying that they will never play "The Conjuring" live anymore. *shakes head* I really love that song.
The videographer knows exactly where to be for every part of this song. Well he missed last Marty solo
That because Dave is filming
@@jsj01999 It´s not Mustaine filming. It´s the same dude who filmed all the other "vault" videos. It´s a guy who´s part of the road crew.
Pretty sure Jared was joking, dude, mellow out.
Mustaine was in the back snoring coke and filling in heroine!!!
Menza was one of those drummers where you could really hear his personality in his playing, quite a unique sound!
mattrg470 Yes ❤️
I'm not a drummer, can you explain to me how could a drummer put his feelings and personality in his playing ?
god damn, i wrote a whole page of text to explain it but deleted it by accident. in short, just compare a guy like virgil donati vs a guy like Lars Ulrich. both have a distinct sound and they are far apart skill wise....actually very far :) . the more you listen, the more you learn the nuances.
Ok dude thanks
you can play on the beat like a computer, or you can be slightly in front or behind the beat, giving it feeling like a human.
BEST Megadeth lineup.
Definitely!
Without a single shred of doubt
Neonym yeah ill go with that for sure
Andy Lai I like Poland and Gar a bit more. But Rust in Peace is the best album.
Have to disagree I think nick was the better drummer to be honest gar was just around earlier
Nick’s attitude behind the kit is what every drummer should aspire to be .
an abuser?
And it's just a soundcheck!! :D
@@ChristopherGray00really??
@@ChristopherGray00 ????? wtf are you saying dude?
Dave Ellefson is one of the most underrated bass players in metal history!
Edosardo73 I'll second that!
Rex Brown... Pantera.
yup, agree
Edosardo73 underrated? I think most metalheads know Ellefson is awesome and one of the best.
I got in a long, ugly battle on UA-cam a few years back with a guy who said Ellefson wasn't a great bassist...because he "didn't write his parts".
Some people just don't get it.
I love how it goes from everyone kinda noodling around until Junior starts playing Five Magics, and Nick's like "fuck yeah, five magics!"
R.I.P. Nick. Always remembered.
GAR also!!
No way. This guy is legendary. On a whole different level of playing
God they are so dialed-in and locked in the pocket. From a sheer chops perspective, Megadeth is by FAR the greatest of the Big 4. At least to my ears.
100% agree, they're playing some insane riffs at blistering speed with absolute tightness. Technically speaking Megadeth is on another level
The fact that this is the only footage (to my knowledge) of this lineup playing this song weirdly makes the song all the more special.
RIP Nick Menza. You were an awesome drummer, and amazing person.
RIP Nick... :( You will be remember through this awesome band!
Gar Also.
Much love Nick.
Marty and Nick. Favorite Megadeth members.
Nick is an immortal Thunder God never to be forgotten, pushing his equipment to the limit and hopefully beyond. Thank you for posting this.

The bass drum gallop Menza plays at 4:33 got me to dive back into double bass drums...unreal, and smooth as silk.
None of these guys are in Megadeth now! It was such a badass lineup
PlotTwist: Dave is the camera man that you all are surprised knows when to shoot where and shizz...
THRASH METAL & FUN RIFFS not Dave
He missed Marty's epic solo. Oops.
Fuck, learn english!
Dave's busy shooting up
THANK YOU to the wise human being who left us with this wonderful time capsule.
Nick and those galloping triplets set in a back swing groove... amazing in this song!!
Automatically thought of this amazing performance from Nick when I heard the news.

I love singing along to this and trying to hum Dave's solo.
You sound like you need a guitar
Just started learning this first solo and playing along with this at half speed. Marty is still cruising at 50%, dude is a beast
this band's warmups are greater than most other bands performances
This line up was so OP. Does not get more technical instrumentally than this.
