I'm an editor and part of my job is solving the countless problems that surface from the transition of a film from paper (script) to print (production). Almost nothing works out entirely as envisioned and this can be both a curse and an opportunity to elevate the content. Some of the best films shot have similar problems coming together as even the trashiest reality tv show. The magic really does come down to the edit, because it's last stop before screening and you have the power to change everything. Great video by the way
Honestly, watching the common mistakes and solutions other film makers go through keeps me sane. Thank you for taking the time to make these, when we all know you could be drinking "Singapore Slings" on beach with Opera and stuff.
Michael Bay does destruction and chaos better than almost any director. His stories aren't great but he takes element shots of destruction and makes them look fantastic. He is a technical master, it's not easy to do way he does. He's no autheur but Hollywood doesn't commission him for that. He also has a wicked respect for his crew, almost always uses the same crew cause they can keep pace with him. That said i understand why he's a bit of a scale goat for bad directors but he deserves some credit.
4:06 I noticed this in the film, but I wanted to bring this up because you didn't mention it in the episode. With the VFX smoke, it appears you (i assume accidentally) masked part of the smoke away. If you look to the left side of the screen as the smoke drifts that way, it gets cut off in a box shape. It's feathered so it blends relatively well, but It's still clear that it shouldn't be like that. I just felt like bringing that up. It was still a great film, I loved it!
It is always astonishing to me how much has to be cut in such productions. In the end the viewer judges the final result, but when you realize what had to be done to get there it can change your point of view. Similar when I'm composing but fortunately I can record stuff anytime. Just amazing!
On set mistake #1: Not bringing Gaff Tape PS: The Western short is fantastic, really feels like a huge effort by everyone involved to make something great.
I'd like to see more of these in the future, it's a good way to think about adapting and using mistakes to still get a good final product. It's interesting to see the challenges that any and every film set has to face at one point or another.
I loved that you did this! Recapping your shoot seems pretty helpful in identifying ones own skills vs failures. Keep it up! I've been watching from the beginning and still interested!
This is FilmRiot gold. Advice and experience like this is worth 1000x all the tricks with the tools. Once people have a foundation of tools its time to make mistakes :)
Boy, all this sounds familiar! Just finished producing my first 10 minute short (producer credit) and we ran into so many issues in the editing room with jokes and story points not working. We had to change things around, and our editor did a bang-up job with it! But you are right - it can be super discouraging to see the original script not working with the edit, but you have to get in there and play around with what you have - there is always something that can be done! That's why we're creatives! Great advice!
Your brother and the other gunslinger were just greats. Congrats to them. What were holding to view the scene with. You are in the background in the street.. You do really nice shoots.
Making my very fist Short film next month...wow. I just got myself a decent camera....got my actors....and here I go. shooting it in Florida were my actors are.. SO EXCITED. wish me luck.
Hey Ryan, been watching you for years and its been awesome watching your production values climb higher and higher. Do you have any plans to create more narrative shorts/dramas rather than butt-of-the-joke sketches? I know they take considerably more time to craft in terms of scripting, casting, rehearsals etc. but your film grammar and knowledge is so sophisticated that I'm sure it'd be a great watch. Really useful to hear your mistakes too, I'm always packing too much into production days but I'm sure it's an extra headache with your size of crew and limited access to locations!
I was working as a key grip on a film that was Kickstarted. We were shooting at a small airport in the Melbourne area of Australia. A LOT of mistakes were made but the worst one was when I was moving a C stand out of the way for people to walk past but they started walking sooner than I expected and I accidentally tripped a man over with the stand. Different kind of mistake but a mistake still. The shoot was extremely stressful because of time restraints and that shit effects you more than it should.
Really liked this video and thought Westworld to Yuma was well done too! Would love to know how/where to get a jacket like Justin is wearing. Beautiful job on the costumes, btw.
Odd _pistachio1 WHOA hey there! We're some Cedar Falls filmmakers that are about to join UNI!! Did not expect at all to see a comment like this. Good to see a fellow Iowan!
Great video but i got an EQ, 3:55 When you get the first take with Aris (Sorry) getting shot and falling on the black sponge " like 3:18 how do you show them falling on the ground ofc a second take where the person throws themselves on the ground or what? how is that done? thanks.
They still have them, you just have to spend 200 bucks. But if you're a filmmaker on a budget I would make do with that. I've made due with nothing honestly
Hey Ryan! I was wondering if you still use the mics you used to always rep. Do you still use the NTG3? Have you tried out the newer NTG4 and 4+? What about cardioid or hypercardioid mics like the NT55 or the Audio-Technica AT4053b. I was looking into getting a mic for my film dialogue and didn't know what to get and whether to get a shotgun or a cardioid or hypercardioid. Thanks!
Great insights :). Do you ever do different versions of script in case you have to cut scenes. Like version a,b,c etc just to see what could work if you had to cut a load of stuff?
Was there any inspiration in terms of blocking and choreography for this scene? I'm getting some vibes from Sergio Leone's The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.
HEY, Ryan i just want to ask a question about anamorphic lenses, the moment i got to know about this I was amazed by the kind of look it creates. so, its great to see you working with anamorphic more these days. Now, I have a simple question which you might find kinda stupid as well, Is it possible to shoot with an aspect ratio of 16:9 using anamorphic lens? or is it like that, anamorphic lens only creates 2.39:1 ratio? Please, reply I am a bit confused...
I would never say you are lucky for what you get to do because I've seen you work your butt off and take risks (for a long time now) to get where you are now....BUT... YOU ARE SO LUCKY!!! I would do anything to be on your set. Oh, New guy (Justin) is still working out pretty well IMO don't fire him just yet. Flights from Denver to Dallas are dirt cheap, let me know if you need free help ever, I'm really good at wrapping chords, and taking Starbucks orders! Seriously though, thanks for all the hard work you and the crew do...even Josh
+Scott Sullivan Unless you are watching this on a 4:3 monitor, no. That's very dated thinking. Full screen is exactly what it sounds like - when the image covers the entire screen. And since the vast majority of monitors/televisions are now 16x9, that would be full screen. 4:3 would have black bars on the sides making it yet another crop, not full screen... Now if I said full frame, that would be different, although that is still 35mm and a 3:2 aspect ratio. (Just an FYI to hopefully help, as I don't think you meant it this way - but adding "hahaha" to an attempted correction comes off a bit arrogant.)
Scott Sullivan Wow, he explains his logic and you accuse him of yelling at you and being arrogant. You're a delicate little flower. And to top it off, he's right
No worries man. I see your comments all the time, so I knew you didn't mean it that way. I've had people point stuff out to me when I was coming off in a way I didn't intend, I always really appreciated it. I just wanted to extend the same love your way.
i loved west world, but everything he cut out i would have also loved to see. Maybe the ending like he said wouldnt have been as funny but definiteliy establishing with tim, emily, and stark wouldhave been great. Idk! Love Film Riot!
You could have just shoot the "boots" and people running in one shot, one scene. So, Josh is still walking to the right, but the townspeople are running to the left. The camera is still focusing on Josh's boots. I think that would be simpler and still would nail the effect.
Hi I was wondering how to get a car effect without a car? I have an extremely low budget. I'm looking for a old car but I couldn't get my hands on one without emptying out my pockets. And I would just edit it in there but I'm shooting the whole thing with a super 8 camera. Any tips if not it's totally fine I loved the western
I think there is another mistake. The bad boy on the roof can´t land with his legs on the right. He fell with a front somersault and his legs would have to left side. If it was 1,5 somersaults he would land face down, or not?
Speaking of on-set mistakes, I caught a glimpse of Ryan in some of the publicized footage from the Imagine Dragons make the cut contest when the camera pretends to get punched and looks to the side. Was it you, Ryan?
No. Get a Canon SL1. It's the same price as a t3i but better quality. The only thing you're missing is a flip out screen. But if you're a serious filmmaker you'll want to use a tablet as a monitor for it anyway. Spend a little more and get the Panasonic G6. You can connect to Wi-Fi so you can use your phone as a monitor so the cost is the same
saw Covenant, wow.Truly creepy, scary , tension filled movie.Very interesting sequel to Prometheus. Ridley Scott is a master director, and I continue to learn so much from him. Cant wait for Blade Runner 2049 ! :)

No human ever. :P
Right, but Directors aren't human, so...
Aint that the truth!
speebyda definitely one worth studying though. People really do love his movies. So they may not be bad as a cinematic experience.
Michael Bay does destruction and chaos better than almost any director. His stories aren't great but he takes element shots of destruction and makes them look fantastic. He is a technical master, it's not easy to do way he does. He's no autheur but Hollywood doesn't commission him for that.

"...Am a cowboy bang bang boom boom" 😂😂😂
Love all the action shorts you did. Hope you got more coming 🎬🤙🏾
LOL yeah!
This was a brilliant short.Thank for showing us the bts on it. Great stuff
I loved that you did this! Recapping your shoot seems pretty helpful in identifying ones own skills vs failures. Keep it up! I've been watching from the beginning and still interested!
Mistakes are proof that we are trying. Nice to give the insight of the making. Helps a lot for learning. Regards
I kinda like the cut ending more.
Ben D. Same. I thought it was pretty funny
Same lol
i agree =D can't see whats wrong with the cut version
LaVelle MEDIA I guess it might have been a little odd without showing them at all before
Honestly it was very similar to film riots humor so it seemed fitting
This is FilmRiot gold. Advice and experience like this is worth 1000x all the tricks with the tools. Once people have a foundation of tools its time to make mistakes :)
@FilmRiot You've always reminded me that anyone can become a director. Noticing you're mistakes is what makes a better director. Great work guys.
I'm not the only one!!! Thanks Ryan! It's nice to know I'm not alone!
Awesome video! Love the honesty. Made all the times I've had issues seem more normal!

This is cool. I love the honesty in this video. It proves that problems on set can happen to all!
loving the new vlog style Ryan!
I just can't get enough of you guys....luv u film riot...
Your brother and the other gunslinger were just greats. Congrats to them. What were holding to view the scene with. You are in the background in the street.. You do really nice shoots.

I just got myself a decent camera....got my actors....and here I go.

I saw that you had a wireless system for viewing the camera. could you explain what that system is that you used? Thanks ;)

I'm curious to hear your audio breakdown - what you used the h4n for vs the F8?
Really liked this video and thought Westworld to Yuma was well done too! Would love to know how/where to get a jacket like Justin is wearing. Beautiful job on the costumes, btw.
You should make one about building a set too. Always good stuff, guys! Iowans: UNI has an awesome video program.
Odd _pistachio1 WHOA hey there! We're some Cedar Falls filmmakers that are about to join UNI!! Did not expect at all to see a comment like this. Good to see a fellow Iowan!
wow 1 million followers. congratulations Film Riot. I have been watching for years. When Ryan's face was smaller 😁😁😁😁. Thank you guys. Great videos
I would have never th8 u had all those challenges.. still loved how it ended. I really love the color grade!
Great video but i got an EQ, 3:55 When you get the first take with Aris (Sorry) getting shot and falling on the black sponge " like 3:18 how do you show them falling on the ground ofc a second take where the person throws themselves on the ground or what? how is that done? thanks.
I knew it, people were tryna tell me all day that it was Tuesday but I knew it had to be Film Riot Monday.
I watched Logan in black & white last night, amazing.
WOW. Right on it!! Never been this early!!
Hey buddy, Where did you get the crash mat? I've been looking for one....
On Amazon! Where else do you buy anything? lol
6'x2' crash pad is only $40
An unexamined life those aren't crash pads at all. Those are tumbling mats
They still have them, you just have to spend 200 bucks. But if you're a filmmaker on a budget I would make do with that. I've made due with nothing honestly
An unexamined life I bought 6 of those a year ago. The foam now lines equipment cases. It's far too firm to fall on.
Hey Ryan! I was wondering if you still use the mics you used to always rep. Do you still use the NTG3? Have you tried out the newer NTG4 and 4+? who do i have to pay to get another monday challenge round here!!!
You have to challenge Ryan to a duel and draw first blood. If you lose he eats your heart to absorb your vitality.
Practical Media I just hosted a contest like a Monday challenge on my channel with some 4k stock footage as the prize
Thanks for the insights.
can anybody tell me the intro song :3
Hey. One question. How do you record audio on an external audio recorder while filming so that you can find it in post??
please make a video on building sets
I would never say you are lucky for what you get to do because I've seen you work your butt off and take risks (for a long time now) to get where you are now....BUT... YOU ARE SO LUCKY!!! Hey @filmriot you guys are really battling the movie look, finally.
I am probably too late, but what’s the intro song? Its great!
Thanks for making awesome content Film Riot! Also, just wondering, will Quick Tips be coming back?
Josh is pretty good at spinning 6 shooters too :)
It's been a couple months since I saw Film Riot Mondays. Is "Ryan's Mail sack" phased out?
16:9 is still widescreen. 4:3 is fullscreen.
+Scott Sullivan Unless you are watching this on a 4:3 monitor, no. That's very dated thinking. Full screen is exactly what it sounds like - when the image covers the entire screen. Scott Sullivan Wow, he explains his logic and you accuse him of yelling at you and being arrogant. You're a delicate little flower. And to top it off, he's right
I think he was just joking around. :)
No worries man. I see your comments all the time, so I knew you didn't mean it that way. I've had people point stuff out to me when I was coming off in a way I didn't intend, I always really appreciated it. I just wanted to extend the same love your way.

@8:00 "What you do with the different Hughs."
I C wut U did there...
Where can I buy one of those shirts at? Write shoot edit repeat!!!
You could have just shoot the "boots" and people running in one shot, one scene. So, Josh is still walking to the right, but the townspeople are running to the left. The camera is still focusing on Josh's boots. I think that would be simpler and still would nail the effect.
you guys made a great short as always I just didn't get the lady next to you but I guess she was like the owner of the place idk
Is Monday challenge coming back soon?
Hi I was wondering how to get a car effect without a car? I have an extremely low budget. I'm looking for a old car but I couldn't get my hands on one without emptying out my pockets. And I would just edit it in there but I'm shooting the whole thing with a super 8 camera. Any tips if not it's totally fine I loved the western
A good way to find one is to really just ask! Im not sure, I've never shot on super 8mm.
One critic would be when that guy gets shot and he falls back, you see him bounce off the matt, so it looks fake.. at 4:06 mark
It all looked good to me!
I preferred the cut ending, to be honest. Still hilarious, as usual 😂
I think there is another mistake. The bad boy on the roof can´t land with his legs on the right. He fell with a front somersault and his legs would have to left side. If it was 1,5 somersaults he would land face down, or not?
Good stuff ♥
great video.
Still an awesome video!
Can we see your storyboard? or shot list?
what font did you use for your intro?
i think you are beyond ready to make your feature film. I say get too it!
PeglegMedia I agree 👍👍👍
duuuude i agree
Speaking of on-set mistakes, I caught a glimpse of Ryan in some of the publicized footage from the Imagine Dragons make the cut contest when the camera pretends to get punched and looks to the side.
Was it you, Ryan?
I always have these problems, I use to think that I was doing bad... but not... at all.
Time is the enemy. Oh, and the position of the sun. Eh, ya live ya learn.
Whats the best beginner DSLR?
Cynical, unhelpful answer: The one that you buy.
Serious, honest answer: Canon T3i.
No. Get a Canon SL1. It's the same price as a t3i but better quality. The only thing you're missing is a flip out screen. But if you're a serious filmmaker you'll want to use a tablet as a monitor for it anyway.
Spend a little more and get the Panasonic G6. You can connect to Wi-Fi so you can use your phone as a monitor so the cost is the same
thanks for the suggestions guys, I have always filmed my videos with gopros and cheap point and shoot cameras and always wanted to upgrade to a DSLR
I don't get what's wrong with the original cut ending 🤷♂️
Why did you remove the lovely intro from your new episodes? [sad face]
nice video!
You know what would be cool? A MONDAY CHALLENGEEEE
the first mistake was having the Tuesday title then saying "welcome to film riot mondays"
Thanks a lot I want to now how to hide a rope or something extra on site when we shot a film .I am your big fan from Afghanistan.
You have to use as thin a line as possible then your editor will have to erase it frame by frame in post production
Really like the original ending!
HAY u guys are awesome, just wondering if u could do a video on STOP MOTION ANIMATION it would be SOOOO helpful, thnx!
I love film riot omg haha
I liked the alternative ending.
"Bang, bang boom boom!"
i lmao when i saw josh holding that ipad...something you dont see everyday
saw Covenant, wow.Truly creepy, scary , tension filled movie.Very interesting sequel to Prometheus. Ridley Scott is a master director, and I continue to learn so much from him. Cant wait for Blade Runner 2049 ! :)
He didn't direct Blade Runner 2049
Youre right, Denis Villeneuve takes the helm this time.Ridley is executive producer .Im actually surprised he wasnt actively involved in the story.
Apparently Alien is supposed to be the new "franchise" so it doesn't surprise me at all
3:16 "Pan Up"
I like this ending more.
8:03 haha.... "Hugh's"
It's better than the dreaded... Reshoots! While watching this latest short I just kept thinking how polished everything looked. You're able to achieve a professional quality on a shoestring budget and with a tiny crew, (who are in the sketches!) I wish I had the money to finance an entire movie, if you ever kickstart or patreon a project I'm in for a high tier. Can't wait to see what you do next.
