- This Film Courage video is a culmination of dozens of interviews we have done over the past 5+ years with Hollywood actors. It covers the craft, strategy, mindset, business principles, and the ups and downs that all actors face. It's filled with clues to their success.
This video features Aaron Eckhart, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Katey Sagal, James Franco, Kevin Bacon, Michelle Monaghan, Aaron Paul, Richard Gere, Ethan Hawke, Cynthia Nixon, Miles Teller, Tobey Maguire, Jim Gaffigan, Mandy Moore, LaKeith Stanfield, Clive Owen, Alexander Skarsgård, Omari Hardwick and a whole lot more.
We've made this video for actors but we can see it benefiting all creatives. It was fun for us to put together and we hope you get a lot out of it.
It's broken down into 3 Chapters.

Wow!! What a great comment... You are right.... perseverance.
One of my friends has been in Hollywood pursuing acting since his early 20s; Today, he is in his 30s, living out of his van, and working for a company that builds retail spaces shelving and countertops. Hollywood, it's a tough business to break into if one doesn't make the right connections and being at the right place at the right time. Very entrepreneurial-type business.
@emerson • but if you don‘t try you will never know and maybe you will regret it one day
@@johannatr3720 Who cares? Everyone has regrets. There are more important things than acting
@@SnailHatan yeah I wasn’t judging. It depends on the person but I would personally regret that most days of my life
Well it’s not just that. You have to keep networking. It’s not just go out and audition, it’s also developing a network of people who can help get you to where you want to be
@@SnailHatan there are more important things to you For the rest of us here not being an actor is like not living
I don’t care if acting isn’t stable, I enjoy the craft. So many people tell me that I have to have “several streams of income”, and if I love doing several things and am blessed with those things being monetized, then blessed be to God. I despise this idea that it seems like you HAVE to be this entrepreneur type person to be successful in life. Do what you want to do, and do it because it makes you happy, not because of money or fame, do it because it speaks to you. Whatever you love doing, keep doing it and lean on God. Everything will work out 💪🏾
0:31 Plan B = permission to fail. Never GIVE yourself permission to fail.
This material is really good! Substitute "acting" with "entrepreneurship" and you get the same high quality motivational material! 💯
I rarely ever comment but I'm 11 mins in and I feel so heartened by these. I kept asking myself why am I doing this? No one believes in me. Not one person supports me in what I am doing. It is HARD when no one believes in you. I believe in myself but there's only so much that can take you. Especially when you're a woman and not an attractive one. I am trying to create my own work and it's HARD. When no one believes in you at all. Ever, plus you have to do your regular jobs, it's hard but, watching these? Wow it gives me a bit of hope.

Characters are realizations from peoples imagination.
I’ll come back, when I win my first Oscar. Promise! 🙏🥀🦋😊
Actors are born as a way to be someone with the right words and become their character is how life can be magically someone else you want as a secret is a talent but don’t want the rejection. And inside something so deeply theater is my lover lost and theater became bullies letting go of what I was born is create the ideas in painting my savor with covid in Mexico lived in fear was put in to colors. Artists love all challenges so actors act, writers write, and passion is the commitment to be better and have other outlets for expression. Being famous is never a great actors goal. Start out small and let the magic inside or outside it’s oxygen yet I was bullied out of lead rolls by mean so just keep making them hate your art . Destroying art is lower then anyone with passion just want you to fail.. plan to be bullet proof because to murder Mozart is tragic be free and see you in movies in Spanish words have a small part of acting from the truth improv will a tool used with masters but never say “oppz what’s the line” make up in audition and say “Robert De Nero can’t remember lines and al Pacino look it up

@@MilitantTalker good advice!
FlorasHormones I understand. The support of friends and family can be so important. But an unshakable belief in yourself is even more important. I understand how much those around you can have a positive or negative influence on your self confidence. But just try to think of it like the temporary rejection that even the best of actors get when they read for role and don’t get the part. Set your acting goals. Make a commitment to achieving them. Then take action to pursue your goals. First you must picture yourself in your mind acting and getting paid. Visualize how those around you will react. Feel the pride you will feel and the respect you will get. Do this every morning and night. You can literally manifest your own success. But you must also take action and “Show up“ for casting calls. Think only about what you want to achieve. Avoid thinking about the past or anything negative, such as the negative opinions of others. Do this, and you will be a success. Quantum physics how proven that we CAN manifest the destiny we want. Now go “Break a leg”! (They say this instead Good luck in the acting profession).

I have always enjoyed watching movies, tv shows etc. and never considered acting due to the typical "I can't do it" behavior. I recently was able to begin acting in some sense, I got two background roles and was instantly fascinated. Now as I am finishing a Psychology degree, I want to act more than ever. I have to agree the best way to get better or grow is to simply "do it". I wish everyone the best of luck! Don't Stop!
thank you for this video I know it was a lot of work
Doing our best. Enjoyed putting this one together. Definitely takes time. Thanks for your comment.
I guess, I get how people get discouraged and down after getting rejection after rejection but for me it's like this: all the other doors closed. Except this one. Everything fell into place and got me to where I could practice my craft. It's part of my journey to grow and build and learn everything I can to become the person I was put into this world to be--- and even if I get rejected, or if I quit, I'll still be going back to the minimum wage or boring office job in the end to try to make ends meet. I'd rather practice my craft and hustle while I struggle. At least then I'm still doing what I'm meant to do and not walking away from Destiny.

-Celebrities who have an established career from different fields
These are the people that casting directors choose.
Guys, we have to address the nepotism, ethnocenturism towards british and austrailian people, and celebrities who want to dabble and play around in the acting field.
The acting strike was the perfect opportunity to address those things, but we failed horribly. Actors did not win anything in the strikes.
Now we as actors cant just complain about never getting work, but we gotta talk about it.
For actors, perhaps a helpful metaphor might be to think of a “no” or a “rejection” as merely a “positive ion”-the number of which happens to occur as more prevalent at intersections and stop signs within a city. Think of a “yes” as merely a “negative ion”-which might happen to occur less frequently spaced (yet more lengthened) within a city as a freeway.
Therese Ember I like that
My cousin is an actress, and I was on the phone with her the other night and she said prepare for rejection, and prepare to sacrifice stuff for this job.

Remember as an actor it has to due with luck but be ready.
Getting injured during a stunt scene on Blue Bloods back in 2016 has really stunted the momentum that I was in. It resulted in Traumatic brain injury which sucks because my memorization skills have severely declined. I know that we are our own worst enemy but I am determined to get back to set SOON. I will not become complacent. I am grateful for this compilation of golden nuggets from fellow actors who never gave up. My hope is to see some of you reading this on a set and work work work. Question : where are the legit free cast agencies are i live in San diegp ca
18 and since 16 I've known I've wanted to be an actor cause in theory I could be whatever i want. It's the fact that i love living in Iowa and connections I've made here that I don't want to move to LA. I just know if I tried I could be big.
You don't need to move to LA to be an actor. You can start now. I'm sure there's teachers in your area and most cities have a local theater.
You could be performing NOW and maybe in a few years decide whether or not you want to move to LA. If you feel that acting is your passion then go for it.
James Franco once said that if you really want to be good at something then why NOT work as hard as you can at it? You already have an advantage because you're starting early.
Being an actor is in some ways a lot like gambling, you can play the game of chance and hope it just "works out" or you can play the game which requires skill and have a solid plan. As they say "if you've failed to plan, you've planned to fail". Have a plan; follow through on that plan. Make a list of individual goals and knock them out one at a time. You'll get there.
@@liquidbraino is it a must to go to acting school?
Believe
@@liquidbrainoy’all are delusional 😂😂
@@hassanmohamud3096 If you plan to have any longevity in your career then why would you just play at it? I mean if you want to be successful then you need to be good at what you do regardless of *what* you do and if you really want to get good at something why *wouldn't* you work as hard as you possibly can at it? I've noticed that younger generations are always looking for the cheat codes or some shortcut but there is no shortcut to success. It's not a sprint, it's a marathon so you have to think like a marathon runner. You can't just sit on your couch for twelve months eating Doritos and Burritos then suddenly show up on race day expecting to win against ten million other runners who spent the whole year pushing themselves to their limits. Especially in such a competitive market as TV/Film, there are ten million actors registered on IMDb and only about 5,000 are famous. I'm not real good at math but that's roughly 0.003%. That 0.003% is the percentage that was committed enough to work hard at achieving their goals *and* had realistic expectations.
Act because you love the craft of acting - not because you're obsessed with fame but too lazy to work for it. I'm not trying to be rude, just brutally honest. You'll make yourself miserable that way but if you fall in love with the *craft* of acting you can pay your bills by doing what you love more than anything in the world. Isn't that enough?
BTW: The best place to fall in love with the craft of acting is in an acting class. That's also the best place to begin building your network and self worth as an actor. Second best place to fall in love with acting is on stage. There's no better teacher than a live audience and you never know who might be sitting in that audience. The thing is if you're inexperienced nobody is going to hire you for anything interesting. And if you have nothing on your resume nobody is going to want to cast you when there's ten million other actors to choose from. It's kind of a "Catch 22", you can't get good work if you haven't already done good work. So HOW do you get something for your resume when you have nothing on your resume??
You take acting classes. And the honest to god truth is that I started acting before I took classes and now I regret it. A *good* acting class isn't going to be easy - it WILL be painful at times but acting classes will teach you humility and that's very important in an industry that's full of narcissists. I wish I had trained for at least two years before I even tried to be a professional working actor. I look back on everything I did before I started training and it's all shit but I couldn't see that back then; I didn't have the humility. I want to get rid of it all and start over but all I can do is move forward from where I'm at right now. Can't go back in time; I can't un-film "Batman Returns"; can't remove my name from the credits. Pain is temporary; film is forever.
The best piece of advice I can give is this: Never let the word "can't" seep into your vocabulary. That which hinders your task IS your task. And don't let the word "try" ever seep into your vocabulary. Do it or don't do it. Don't make excuses; make a commitment and DECIDE "I am an actor". That's really the level of commitment that it takes - so that you'd never stop acting EVEN IF you knew you'd never become famous. If you can't even commit to something as simple as taking a class then you should focus your efforts and energy on something that you *are* passionate about enough to work hard for it. The second best advice I can give: Don't join SAG/AFTRA until you get the second letter & don't touch IMDb at all. When you've got something that's worth adding to your IMDb page it will happen automatically. Let that happen automatically - THEN sign up on IMDB-Pro but *only* to add your headshots. And third: don't seek out an agent. Let the agent find you and research the agency well before you sign anything. Take a whole day to read over the contract before you sign it and if they try to rush you - rip that contract up and walk out.
I'm dead serious... a lot of this (above) may seem trivial but you'll thank me later. I turned down three different agencies before I finally signed with my current agent. And you *don't need* an agent if you're just starting out. Take classes; get headshots; sign up on Actors Access, Casting Networks, Casting Frontier and start submitting; going on auditions; going through rejection after rejection after rejection until you have such a thick skin that it doesn't even phase you anymore. You have to get through the 80% of rejection in order to get to the 20% that's going to pay off. And when the quality of your work speaks for itself *they* (talent agencies) will come looking for YOU -- but so will the scam agencies and there are more scam agencies than real agencies so don't be in a huge rush to get signed. Don't be a typical thirsty (new) actor who's desperate to get famous overnight because it makes you an easy target for scammers. If you find yourself standing in Hollywood, ignore all the fliers on telephone poles and bus stops promising to make you famous if you just hand over $600. They are ALL scams.
The thing with SAG (the union, Screen Actors Guild) is that if you have very little experience nobody wants to pay SAG wages to hire you. *You* cost more money for them to hire if you're in the union so you want to wait until you get the "must join" letter. Before that you'll get a "can join" letter - don't do it; wait for the second letter. I have friends who joined SAG too soon and 100% of the time they end up going back home with shattered dreams when all of a sudden nobody will hire them. I've seen it happen a million times, everyone thinks you're not a real actor until you have IMDb credits and your SAG card. They love showing off that card to their friends like "look at me, I'm a *real* actor" but a real actor is a working actor; not somebody who has a faded SAG card which expired ten years ago as they stand behind the register at a Walmart in Wisconsin.
Right place at right time = "the" opportunity
The secret is grow your own filmmaking business..
Exist N Nature Media So overwhelming though..
Cost is endless just like the dreams and Action.

It's so beautiful to see how much love and support exist in this comment section, as an immigrant actor in California for 2 years, I can't complain, there's tons of blessings coming for all of us. Thanks to every single person who spread positive energy and genuinely support ✨
In case you're going through difficult times, please don't quit!
how do you guys find auditions? I live in NYC and its definitely harder then i thought. I knew it would be hard but not this hard lol.
Backstage.com is a great source to find audition postings. If you're looking for more film and commercial acting actorsaccess.com is a great tool as well. It depends on what you're looking for I hope this helps.
Two For Free Podcast I have backstage already but thanks soooo much for the second one !
You slacking. Your in the big apple. Work is everywhere for you. I’d kill to be in your spot
JakeThaGreat001 Soo point me in the right direction lol
I live in the Netherlands, so difficult to get further.
@1:18:39 Michael O'Neill talking about being free and how the legendary English actor Sir John Gielgud "Has gotten free" I feel that is the same for all of the entertainment industry whether it's Sport, Music or Acting the feeling of being free to express your self without breaking the boundaries/rules of your job. Some Great actors, as well as some great athletes, speak of an out-of-body experience where they are in the moment free-flowing in mind, spirit, emotion, instinct, thought and actions and that's where their perfect performances come together.
This video was soo inspirational. When I saw the time I was like 2hours “yeah no” but It was definitely worth It...!!!
Agree with this somewhat but you don't need backup plan. Just believe in original plan and have good side hussells and make those money making jobs your safety net. I believe we all have a purpose designed for us. Don't act unless it's your gift. If it's your gift then it will happen. Just be patient. Timing is key.
This path is difficult for everyone who decides to pursue it. But what about the added barrier of discrimination when it comes to minorities and the lack of diverse roles for Latino people that barely make up 3% of the entire film industry? Seems kind of hopeless. Not that I still wont give it a try.
It's not like that anymore..
Marilu I am black & I feel you. It seems hopeless.
Do you ever listen to advice given to you? Or just ignore it and fall back into some sort of self pity
@@joemfahey maybe you completely missed the part where I said that I am still gonna give it try and I still am. . . Jeez.
@@weszillich2880 it definitely is. I can't believe you wrote that comment! 😂 USC released a study in 2019 evaluating movies from 2007-2018 and found that Latinos make up 3% not just in acting but directing, casting directors, etc. Please inform yourself.
I get the same high on an audition as I do on set. It's weird....I know. But I love it! ALL (WELL MOST) OF IT!! 😢😂
I’m gonna be an actress one day. 5 years, 10? Maybe 20. I’m still gonna be one.
I believe you.
Wow what a video, UA-cam amazes me every day
Thanks, glad this one found you.
Also I was a theatre Major in college and I learned more on set and on stage outside of college just by actually doing it. So college is good but you do not need college. I repeat you DO NOT NEED IT. Many have done it without a formal education. But theatre is a good training ground before getting into movies or Broadway . Do local and regional Theatre. Get on that stage first before doing movies. Learn where the art all started. There was a stage before there were movies.
SUCCESS STORY- I discovered both LOAs this I prefer Law Of Assumption better. In 2017 i applied to a flight school ,i did not believe for a min that i could be a pilot ever but there i was waiting to get into a flight school. I robotically affirmed randomly that i was the first pilot in my family, that i was acceppted etc. I didn't know what i was doing ,i was just trying to hype myself up and then boom i was called for an interview then i got in... Keep affirming ,don't stress whatever you want will come about.
You know what would be magical....
If people beginning their careers made friendships, and we started making films together!
That’s what there should be more of!
We don’t need permission to shine.
There’s film festivals for a reason.
They take student and first time films for a reason.
Why
So
Much
Waiting
For
Permission
?!!!
😱
My dream is in the now.
So in 27 and im beginning my acting academy in June. I was in drama in high school and been in improv plays. And its been my dream but due to circumstances I wasn’t able to pursue as a child but now at 27 is that like old or foolish to try?
No, it’s not too old. You can do it!
This is a great video it lets you know what it’s like for other actors but I wonder what aspiring Film directors go through.....probably the same level of rejection. 😎
Performing well on the casting couch?
The late Conchata Ferrell said that to me once on a show. "Honey, they pay me to wait. I give 'em the acting for free."
Which time is Aaron paul at?
9:00pm,sundays on AMC

If you’re a white male and struggles to succeed in Hollywood, can’t even imagine how hard it must be to get your talents recognized for a black female like myself. 100% more harder. Makes me want to give up. ☹️
@Parth Deshmukh BELIEVE IN YOU. You are the only person who can do it for yourself. Commit to your craft 100%. I will also be an actress. Good luck, man. DO NOT LISTEN TO THE WORLD. -Jennah Haile
Yes, representation is very poor, but that did not stop Lupita and Regina King and many other outstanding actresses. We have got this. You have got to believe in you. Work on your inner craft. You can do this. WE WILL MAKE IT. -Jennah Haile
Tamara Bernard thank you for the nice words. I want to believe that too.
Mer Boss I’m with both of you. We just have to keep at it, believe in ourselves and put in the work
Yess I feel you. But I'm not gonna give up. I'm gonna be something someday despite being a black female!
We must always say, “no matter how hard it is, or how bad it gets, I am going to make it.”-Les Brown🌱❤️🌱you got this, keep going and never, and I mean never give up.

I can’t wait to be one of the most influential people in this world, I attract al great opportunities to me and I will be someone everyone will look up to! 🙏🏾❤️
Don't give up! That is good advice . I heard Dolph Lundgren has a hi I.Q and it must be true .
It doesn’t hurt to have a best friend with a celebrity father either…
