Yup, the awareness that as a crew member you're up for some physical work with no creativity involved whatsoever! (unless you're a DP, director, actor or a screenwriter)
Enjoyed this episode! Good to see Film Riot talk about lower roles on TV/film sets, not enough indie-filmmakers realise that working as lower roles on bigger/professional productions is a great way to one day getting to where you want to be. I made the choice about a year ago to start working as a camera trainee on TV dramas and films instead of DOPing unpaid short films and it's possibly the best decision I've ever made. I still DOP shorts when I can but working in the camera department on professional shoots has taught me more about cinematography than shooting stuff on a Canon 5D ever did!
This episode came out LITERALLY right as my college class was covering this subject...that can't be a coincidence!I feel a bond between us that cannot be broken :)
Wow, came back from my first Camera PA job today. 2nd AC had to go so they delegated the role to me, and turns out I was doing okay from what the video says. I thought the 1st AC not giving me the lens was him being a hard ass, but it's just etiquette. Woops! He's a cool dude though. Really great video, I'ma do so much better tomorrow!
Ryan, I want to thank you all from Film Riot for making very good stuff that makes me smile everytime and in the same time learn a lot about this lovely industry. Cheers! Keep it up.
Thank you so much for this video. As a director, the biggest help to me onset is when I can trust those around me to know their job, so I don't have to worry about anything but what I'm supposed to be doing. Cheers.
this was probably one of the most helpful and informational videos you guys have released in a long time. thanks and great job! I'm loving the return to film riot!
....Dang, there's so much to making a film, I'm glad I'm learning what everyone does through this channel, not just the main 5's (Director, Screenwriter, cinematographer, Producer, Actors)
nicely done I've been a career 2nd AC for about 11 years and I was surprised how in depth you've gotten. The job of course does get a lot more in depth but this was a great start. The way I always look at it the AC's job is kind of like being the Mother Bear to the Cub (Camera + Gear).
5:38 Tip nr 3 doesn't work with beginner actors, they will look all the time at lines, better tell them e.g. to stay next to door, and then move next to dishwasher ;)
YES! This is the next phase of Film Riot! A complete film school of terminology/guides to practical shooting. Bravo sirs! I say Bravo! (Todd is the greatest! What's he currently working on?)
These are as entertaining as the are instructional. Even though I will never get a job as an AC, I love learning all this good "techie" stuff of how the films I so love are actually made! Thanks guys!!!
getting that DP nod is now my new life goal, i have no experience working in any movie related field and had never considered. hell i don't even know what a DP is!
Thanks for this super awesome episode, Ryan! I loved seeing Todd again haha. (PS - I just ordered some Rokinon Cine Primes yesterday, and seeing yours got me giddy.) 2:53 - poop
so I have a slate board (white acrylic plastic) what kind of marker do I buy? chalk marker stains it, dry erase stains it if it's left on there too long... lol
One of the seconds I work with uses grease marker and cleans it with lighter fluid. Another option is to use tape with sharpie. Make at least two alphabets of tape tabs and some numbers and keep them on the back of the slate.
wow, that was soooo goooood!!! give me more of those videos! i need them... for reasons... (i'm serious by the way... i didn't know anything you told me in that video!)
In addition to what Justin said about sound mixers, I can tell you that as a DIT/Data Wrangler, I have formed parasocial relationships relationship with the clapper loader.
This was a fantastic tutorial. REALLY good video on your part. I know the proper lens swap procedure, but I've never zero'd out a lens. What's the purpose of this?
If you don't open the lens wide up the aperture blades overlap. If the lens vibrates or bumps because you move the case it can damage the Blades or form bigger oildrops on the blades.
"Never rush a lens change" so many people could use this advice!
could you explain why for me a rookie please ?
jean-raoul Because you don’t want to scratch it, drop it, get dirt on it, hit it into something and so much more..
I try ro understand why some DP's or AC's dislike when they have to chg a lens
2nd Air Conditioner is needed when one just isn't enough!
Best comment! HAHAHA
How about zero so we don't ruin sound?
What's easier to fix in post? Sound or pit stains?
thormaster06
Pit stains can be fixed in production. Just wear an undershirt.
More of these, please!!!
cineamtography database. search it up on youtube
it's information like this I wish I knew when first getting into filmmaking.

This is huge! Getting into real professional productions is really THE way to do it.
Thank you for sharing that! I might be making that very same decision right now.
This was a awesome video! Can you do a series of stuff like this? I would like to know more about the 1st AC, Gaffer, Key Grip etc!
check out CInematography database, he does a lot of these kind of videos
I second this!
Dang, this one's really helpful! They didn't cover this in film school for me.
they have for me, just a nice refresher
these are the film riot episodes I've missed
This episode came out LITERALLY right as my college class was covering this subject...that can't be a coincidence!I feel a bond between us that cannot be broken :)
I really badly want an armload of different colored tape. That looked awesome.
6:11 I spent my entire life whitout realizing how easy it is to cut a tape. OMG
Gustavo Bissoli this blew my mind 🤯🤣
It's harder than it looks :/

Best video in a while. Nice to see the Film Riot crew getting back to informative and fun videos! Keep up the good work.
Film riot has truly become a beautiful thing in my life.
Could y'all add a list of all the gear you used to be a Second AC? It would be helpful for us folk who want to get their hands on this equipment!
The nod of approval part cracks me up every time
Ryan, I want to thank you all from Film Riot for making very good stuff that makes me smile everytime and in the same time learn a lot about this lovely industry. Cheers! Keep it up.
This episode was amazing! Love it when they are jam packed with great insider info
The MOST HELPFUL Film Riot video in the longest while.
i laughed my ass off at the mary his daughter part
For me it was the that part at the very end of the video. "YOU ARE RUINING MY MOVIE!"
This has been one of the best in a very long time which is not to say that the other videos weren't great
My thoughts: "Did Ryan just give somebody permission to marry Emily!?"
Emily is his sister. Not daughter. His daughter is like 2 or something
DUDE WASSUP!
Thank you so much for this video. As a director, the biggest help to me onset is when I can trust those around me to know their job, so I don't have to worry about anything but what I'm supposed to be doing. Cheers.
Mind blown!
One of the best of the year so far!!

All right a special surprise guest appearance by Todd! Very funny! And my admiration for Justin just continues to snowball. Good addition to the Riot!
4:05 josh and justin looking at each other is just the best
Probably the most informative video you guys have done. Love it! thanks.
5:38 Tip nr 3 doesn't work with beginner actors, they will look all the time at lines, better tell them e.g. to stay next to door, and then move next to dishwasher ;)
good tip :)
Its 2021, im still rewatching this and learning ! Thx Filmriot
Excellent video, these "tips for specific jobs on a film set" type episodes are wonderful.
I'd love more of these type of videos. Just explaining the different jobs on set.
This is one of the best tutorial videos of all time 😆
Got my First "2nd AC" gig today. (School Project) This is an awesome vid! Thanks!
Fantastic information. One of the best and most comprehensive videos on the subject.
Very good, entertaining and practical. Getting better and better.
Just moved to NY and got hired to be a 2nd AC on a huge shoot I had no business being a part of... Thanks for the helpful video!
YES! This is the next phase of Film Riot! A complete film school of terminology/guides to practical shooting. Bravo sirs! I say Bravo! (Todd is the greatest! What's he currently working on?)
Man Ryan you really share the important things that people overlook ......very kool
You guys are good!
Lens change under pressure is the best! Even before I heard it with the sound!!!
Loved the name tags for everyone
I spent 30 grand on film school and, while I don't regret that one bit (greatest experience of my life), I've learned more from watching your channel.
Nice to see Todd around!
I'm an aspiring film maker and your videos are absolutely incredible, THANK YOU!
I 2nd AC, and this is spot on. thank you

I love these little ending tidbits....AWESOMELY FUNNY
These are as entertaining as the are instructional. Even though I will never get a job as an AC, I love learning all this good "techie" stuff of how the films I so love are actually made! Thanks guys!!!
Obsessed with the "THE DP" (obviously)
For every film I shoot from now on I will wear "The DP" hat. Every shoot.

so I have a slate board (white acrylic plastic) what kind of marker do I buy? chalk marker stains it, dry erase stains it if it's left on there too long... lol
Electronic ?
white board marker get it from the pound store in uk,pna or cna in south africa and Walmart or target in the states,I travelled alot
+Sashtastic Productions no, it's not electronic. Lol I might just have to get some white masking tape and write/stick.
+Jeremiah Collins oh right yeah I misread your comment. Thought you said 'which should I buy' sorty
One of the seconds I work with uses grease marker and cleans it with lighter fluid. Another option is to use tape with sharpie. Make at least two alphabets of tape tabs and some numbers and keep them on the back of the slate.
Very good episode!
Film Riot is still the most entertaining film channel out there :).
hahahaha... what a way to bring the details to us with so much of light and laughter moments... loved it
As a 2nd AC in England it's cool to see that the practices are almost identical in America.
AWESOME info! I don't know much about any of that stuff, but really cool to hear about it.
this was so so so so useful. thankyou for this video. please do this for other positions!
