- After high water took out road and bridges we've been confined to an area around our home on a stretch of the Coquihalla Highway. We decided to document the highway condition and repairs along with a bit of our own experience. This video looks at two old gas pipelines uncovered in the Coquhalla river during the latest high water event. Jer, Matt and Sarah join us to have a farewell meal with Mike and Ute who have been stranded with us on this section of highway.

Mike and Ute are absolute troopers. Mad props to 'em!
They even mentioned in one clip they walked around and picked up all of the garbage on stretches of the highway they were stranded on. Mad props indeed!
Bye Mike and Ute! Have safe drive back home.
I hope the rest of the world learns from this....
1. There are still very good people in the world.
2. Respect the mustache.
You guys have shown the world what it means to be caring, compassionate, humble and strong in one breath. Much love and respect to all of you from central Pennsylvania!!!
Respect to the stache indeed!
Well said …. This is the real Canada …
Yep. That how it used to be. It's how everyone was. We all did it. Respected the stache. Seriously though we all used to look out for each other and we didn't measure ourselves by what we had but what we could do for others.
I tell ya boys, these fellas are the real deal. No BS.
Sorry to See Mike and Ute go, but change is a constant in life and they’ve got to get back to their normal lives. Safe travels.
Great videos! Keep ‘em coming.
Cheers!
Whipple
God bless Mike and Ute. We'll probably never see them again... but I'm hoping maybe someday. :-)
Amazing adventure … great news that Jeremiah and Matt are mobile - must be a relief! Safe travels Mike and Ute **find a way to visit this wonderful family and pop back into a vid or two. Love the group pic - good memories ❤️
These videos are awesome. I have watched all of them since the flood began so keep it up! thanks
Found your channel by accident after the flooding started and have enjoyed the videos, haven't missed one yet. Almost sad to see Mike and Ute go but glad to see they're finally able to, some great people making this best of this hardship and doing what they could to help even picking up trash along the chain up area and helping the construction effort. Safe travels to them and keep putting that good karma into the world, I'll miss them in the future videos tho I'm sure they won't be strangers having gone thru such an epic adventure with you guys.
You're all pretty great people, helping the work crews and bringing info to the outside world. Best of luck to you all; sorry to see Mike and Ute are leaving.
thanks for your updates, better than the pro media for sure. on a side note it cracks me up how similar you and son are. carry on.
Hey guys, I've really enjoyed your daily posts on the crazy flooding. Im a Canadian from Alberta, now living in Zambia (central Africa), so I'm up to date on things! Thanks for sharing this with all of us!
How is it in Zambia ?
Probably better then here in Canada
I think I'd miss it here tho
That's cool! My husband (in Alberta ... now we r in BC, recent move) was working in Zambia for a year and loved it! Are u living in Zambia permanently?
@@deekobald9260 I've been here in Zambia for 3 years now. My wife, who is Zambian and I are planning on going to the UK for a few years, but will return to Zambia eventually! Great to hear your husband enjoyed Zambia too! Very welcoming and friendly people here. And as an ex Albertan, I seriously appreciate the warm weather here as well. I've lived for 18 months in Kenya before coming to Zambia and never regretted coming to Africa. 😃
@@robertpfister363 Why on earth would you want to go to the uk? It's a terrible place right now. It's not like it used to be.
@@mikeznel6048 sorry to hear that. My wife is taking a new job there for the next 3 years. We leave in June I think. Hopefully the situation in the UK is slightly better by then. I've heard mixed reports both good and bad...
An amazing story within a story-new friendship amidst disaster and destruction. Thank you guys for all you've done.
People helping people, friendships for life! The true Canadian spirit! Safe travels to all and thank you once again for the fantastic coverage each day and also a big thank you to all the workers out there, stay safe everyone 👍🇨🇦
Man I look forward to these vids now, good job guys, real effin news. You guys deserve a beer on me
I hope the winter brings better things for you all. Thank you for keeping us up to date.
I like how you met some people along the way and help them and they help you and everyone's trying to get through the situation as best they can... sometimes being stranded can lead to some good things
the old pipes will catch rocks and logs and slow the water down going over the deeper active pipeline slowing erosion. theres a train bridge near me that uses the same strategy they pushed the old bridge over just down stream of the new bridge and it created a pool that slows the water down massively
Interesting strategy.
I worked on the construction of one of those lines, the second one, back in the late 60's.
Those cables running on the pipes are most likely corrosion cables I’ve got two crossing of my property here in Ontario and they come in once a year and check for corrosion. I would say you’ve got two new friends you’ve made and that’s what makes us Canadians🇨🇦🍺
If there was power connected to them at some point, then they might have been cathodic protection. They might have buried locating wire above the pipeline, or there might be communication cable along there as well.
Thanks for the updates. Gods speed to all of you.
I live in Ontario just north of Toronto. I hunt annually in Alberta, vacation at the Shuswap and have travelled the Coquihalla and I can't tell you how much I look forward to your posts. Informative and entertaining and I just want to thank you and wish all of you the best. And I will continue to follow going forward. I'm sure we haven't seen the last of Mike and Ute.
Have really enjoyed your video's. They kept me up to date and are much appreciated. (Merritt)
God bless you all and keep you safe.
Thanks Mike and Ute for staying behind to do what you could . 👍
Glad you guys were OK during this 3 week deluge of weather.
Merry Xmas everyone ✌
It's not a playground out there.
That's risky business to stay back that long and help B.C hwys get back to mobile as fast and smooth as possible, together.
It's was a selfless act we can all learn from and appreciate.
Hope Kiewit sends ya a Xmas turkey and bottle of Crown... lololol hint .. hint...
Thank you again for your updates. Those pipes should have been taken out of the river.
It wasn't a river before.
They're empty and they were under 6 feet of river rock. The environmentalists don't like you digging around in a salmon river if you don't have to.
Back in the day we were allowed to open cut rivers and creeks. Those concrete strapped to the pipeline is called weights. Now a days we bore all River and creek crossings and are up to 10m’s to 50m’s below river bed. No worries anymore
It’s been a great adventure,! Thanks for your sharing, feel free to keep posting 😊💪🏄♂️🚁
Such an incredible story of good people..23 days! Wow!!
You'll have stories to tell for years to come.
Canadian spirit and compassion on display here.
All the Very Best to Mike and Ute, it's been so much fun and heart warming entertainment to have you both on the channel. 1st Class Canadians, just like your wonderful neighbours the last 3 weeks. Another great video today, thanks for posting !!
Wow, what a great testament of the strength & resilience of the pipeline ! I could only image if there were rail cars full of oil tumbling into the river & seen how that would have turned out.
Way to go guys. Helping hands are always missed!
I really appreciate watching you guys an all that you've done to document your journey threw theses tough times. All the best to everyone, an safe travels.
Have a Merry Christmas! Great group photo to!
I am in NB and look forward to these updates every night. Great job. Your reports keep me more in the loop then any other source. Stay safe and keep up the wonderful job.
In low water time they can re dig the central channel and realign the river if necessary.
can,t say enought great video,s guys c,awesome work . Good luck mike and ute,s on your trip home were every that might be,thanks so much from Alberta
great upload ...really interesting ....thanks for filming and doing the updates !!
Great storytelling!
You guys Are the best!! Thank you so much for the fantastic insights into your everyday life's. My sister lives in BC and I've visited lots , many times driving up and down the coquihalla visiting family in kamloops. Its so beautiful. Anyway stay safe and merry Christmas and the best new year you all deserve...... Love and best regards...... Veronica UK. X
That'll be a holiday/adventure that'll stick with Mike and Ute a lifetime. Plus they've made a few great friends that'll last there lifetime too. Sure being a great channel keeping up to date this past month on everything in that neighborhood. One of the best channels and Thanks.
thanks Mike and Ute* you are angels
Happy trails... Cheers to you all.
That's quite a river diversion/erosion. Two-three metres!!!
Very informative. Appreciate and enjoy your videos, the crew. Haven't missed one yet. Thank you.
When all this is done we're gonna need to take this show on the road, continue with our format and keep it simple
SteBros have been wonderful at capturing & showing progress on massive repairs, so THANK YOU Mike, the RV couple & everyone that made this possible, including the wife & kids. Wondering: Shouldn't all old unused, decommissioned pipes & equipment be removed? How much decommissioned machinery & pipes are hidden from sight but still polluting?
All of you people are the Salt of the Earth. You kept up your positive outlook through this whole drama. Glad Mike and Utay get to return home, now. Good friendships have been formed.
How wonderful. If only the rest of the world could conduct themselves like this. Make the best of a good situation. Now a days, everyone just barks out their "sounds good" ideals and points their fingers instead of seeing how good they really have. People are so messed up. I can't stand the world. I don't even want to go out into public anymore. It's not the planet itself, it's these terrible, ungrateful, selfish, self centered, idealistic know it all people who think they have an answer for it all. They have these grand ideas of how the world should work but not a one of them will live by the words they speak. They demand this and that then go and do the exact opposite of what they're telling everyone else they should be doing. Thanks for taking us along. These are real people. Instead of crying about everything, they simply make the best of the cards they're dealt. Those are strong, strong people.
Yay! Mike and Ute!!
Again, great information. Thank you and look forward to what you can and will do, for however long. Cheers.
great update as usual

Safe travels Mike and Ute!! Merry Christmas! Great videos!
thanks for all the updates. well done!!
You guys are great!
Wishing Mike and Ute safe travels. Thanks for the updates! God bless yall 🙏🏼
They identified a problem and relocated it 16 yrs before the failure. Way to go Canada. Eh..
Greetings from the south Okanagan. Thanks so much for the updates folks, they're much appreciated. Used to pass you all at least once a month in summer for work, sometimes more. It's amazing to me how fast they're getting some of the damage repaired. Stay well.
Great reports.
Moral of the story? Living near a river can be very perilous
Another great video featuring some really caring people
Well, you made two friends for life there I'm sure. Great to see they are finally getting out however.
Appreciate all the videos , and love updates, wishing you all a Merry Christmas and hopefully a better New Year
Such a great story of strangers becoming friends, helping each other.
Great coverage!!
Good work guys!😃
This kind of reporting is so valuable, you know your stuff about the environment. Just the facts and no drama.
So much better than the network people that to know their arm from page four.
Another great video 👍
Crazy, keep the real. news coming folks!
getting better up to date news from you guys than the media.. Good job...
thanks for posting!
Way to go guys !! Great reporting! Cheers
Great people. Good vibes. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for the updates. They are so much more detailed than the meek attempts by the "regular" media.
Great set of videos guys, too bad the adventure is near the end.
Take care, thanks for all the updates.
Love your dog! Such a noble feller!🐶

Yeah, going camping for a week, see you in a month, oops! Nice to follow up on what happened to the people stranded by this. Too bad that not everyone has made it out yet though. Thanks for keeping us in the loop.
Wow your best episode ever !
Ok, got it. Pipelines were installed in a way that minimized costs, even across rivers. That's appropriate, if the actuaries who engineers consulted with at the time to assess future risk, determined... at the time... financial risk was minimal. Problem? Future risk assessment did not consider this recent type of event. I think we need to implement in law, hardening pipeline transit in areas of great risk and also, future planning/concern protocol. The cost is minimal if done at the time of pipeline construction.
it's Beautiful, an amazing Story .
River channels constantly change,if your land is made up of gravel deposits it is likely that the river will erode it away again eventually.
Sorry to see mike go l looked forward to see him
Great coverage thanx
Beautiful
Those ' sinkers ' are called bolt on weights. They are installed to keep pipe from floating
Thanks
These would be some great times to spin a gold pan!!!
Aah..the first signs of starting to get back to normal. Well, i'm staying subscribed and hoping for updates. Have enjoyed them so much that I stopped watching the National in favour of your 'on the ground' coverage' with fellow Cdns. All the best to Mike and Ute on their way home! Ste Bros really showed the way how to cover this weather fiasco in BC. Thanks for everything!
Abandoned lines would be under a nitrogen blanket. You might not even be seeing the actual pipe, but instead a casing pipe around the actual line.
