Great review and shoutout. I remember when I put a simple LED upgrade on my mag, and the 179 lumens threw so well I coulda swore it was more. Glad someones giving these lights a leg up, cos maglite sure werent gonna!
No they ain't. This was my first experience with a hot rodded Maglite. Old Lumens over on BLF used to be the best... but this is a sweet light. I love the floody beam of the 2D.
Ide like to see how long it takes before some mag-lite employee gets butthurt and tried to shut this guy down for some kinda made up cry baby patent offence.
From the UK, Love Maglite but they really need to keep with the times. I want to have an Excuse to use the huge Maglite 6D but when an Olight S2, even S1 can outperform you get frustrated. Come on Maglite, get with it!
Friday Night Flashlights! Woo hoo! I am watching your video before Matt's. Your notification came in just ahead of his : - ) Who keeps throwing those branches in your yard? These look fantastic. I think they'll sell the heck out of these drop-ins! Great job you two.
You did great too! This all really did work out wonderfully. I snorted especially hard, when you mentioned the 5 years of High School! Plus Matt, he has sticks in his yard. You don't. That automatically gives you a leg up! : - )
Awesome flashlights! I've always wonder why Maglite never improve their flashlight as far as these. It's not like they don't have their resources. Thanks for the review 👍🏼
Matt if your still looking at the comments, Awesome job on dragging Maglite out of the stone age. I cant believe International Outdoor didn't like your video on the Meteor. Considering the amount of views it should have helped their sales. I thought it was a very favorable review.
Yeah... he didn't like my crack about the UI being a tad complicated. I thought it was a fair review that showed off what a great light it was. It shows up in nearly all of my videos... more free advertising for him!
I just got an Energizer 6 AA flashlight. 1300 lumens. Brightest light I own. I'm impressed. Hopefully I'll play with the big boys some day. Great video!
I imagine a temperature based step down is affected not just by ambient temp, but also the temperature of the hand holding the flashlight, like a form of heat sink. In that case, my wife could probably hold this flashlight on turbo indefinitely.
Some time ,just every once in a while simple is good. But man has flashlights and lights in general have a big improvement. I still have a 22 year old Mag Lite , that's a Super Up Grade.
I'm impressed. The modified Maglite performed very well. My sentiments mirrored your exactly, regarding Maglite failing to keep up with flashlight technology. The only concern I have with the modified Maglite is the heat dissipation and output reduction. I understand the thermal limitations for output vs. component life, but competitors with dedicated designs can keep the high output levels longer because of heatsinks designed into the flashlight casing. If Adventure Sport Flashlights can dissipate more heat by having a better thermal connection with the Maglite body, it would make a good product great. The throw of the modified Maglite is outstanding, in my opinion. There appeared to be an uniform spread of light in its throw. I prefer a floody light over a spot light for most applications. Thanks for the good review.
Well... I have found in all of my testing and all of my reviews- all the big guys have timed or thermal step downs at just a few minutes in. This Maglite performs no worse than say an Acebeam or Olight. It heats up quick... my Acebeam X45 gets almost too hot in 3 minutes. These lights can run with the best... and his drop in modules are a thick chunk of metal. Check out his video at the end. You can also set the thermal regulation to get hotter. Matt said he's let them run for 15 minutes before without issue- but that's too hot to hold. I'd estimate I only let the light get to about 100 degrees before I put in the timer.
I found the Wowtac AS2 to be a lot of bang for the buck. I have a few of them as my go to lamps. To see a Mag light working with the times. Sure looks like a nice option if you need a scull knocker.
Just checked the Adventure Sport Flashlights website. Looks like the dust will need to be cleaned off the trusty old, indestructible 6D cell, because it's time for some retrofitting goodness to put a new lease of life into it. P.S. Great vid as always.
I enjoy my Surefires and fenix flashlights. But I keep two mag lights in my jeep. One 2 aa mini mag with nite ize led upgrade and thumb switch. And a stock 2 D cell. That way I always have a light and it's useful to have a baton like flashlight lol

I might not be a dedicated lumaphile but why in the world YT wouldn't have put this in front of me a long time ago is totally beyond me...and I know I've searched the usual terms many many times. Well everyone can relax, I'm here now.
Magite did eventually come up with an LED D-maglite, and the led bulbs were dying like flies. Also they gave us that evil T8 torx set screw, so that we have to file down a torx screwdriver. And then the led assembly is proprietary and a different shape from the old one and from all the upgrades.
I love my olights and fenixes I still also love my maglites and still think there are certain applications where I would prefer a maglite. Specifically keeping one in the pickup and one in my camping bag to preserve the battery on my rechargeables. Still good lights
I have a question. I have a 3D cell maglite. At present it has the standard LED upgrade everyone puts in their lights at first which is a pitiful 120 lumen (roughly) and it puts out a fairly crappy dim yellow light. What is the most powerful, reasonably priced LED upgrade I can stick in it where I’ll still be able to use D cells. Any help and amazon/eBay links with where to buy would be greatly appreciated.
That's a tough one. I bought an old LED drop in years ago, and it sucked. I know this is a cop out, but if I were you I'd consider keep the old maglite for nostalgia and less for use. The LED upgrade I bought a few years ago was $20, and it was ugly. My advice is to keep it incandescent, and maybe buy something small from the Emisar line, as a main light.

It's a tough job. I did some force protection work in the military and my brother is Fed. MagLites are great for checking tires on semi-trucks too. I ordered a Fenix E12 yesterday. I have Fenix E01 on my keychain and I like the long batter life.

I've checked your website but saw nothing for 4D flashlights. Will a 2D tube extender and "Maglite LED Upgrade 5,000 lumen 3x XHP50 LED Bulb for 6D Maglite" fit my actual incandescent 4D maglite? SHould I buy anything else?
Got a question about 18650 lithium ion batteries. Recently got a couple Taklite TA-50s (1080 lumen edc) and they use a single 18650 each. My question is simple: can you inadvertently shorten the battery's performance if you charge it when it's at let's say 30-40%? Or should you almost fully deplete it (10-20%) before charging?
For long term storage when not using the best resting voltage is in the mid 3s... like 3.5- 3.7 ish... but if you're referring to the memory effect then not really. I have had some batteries for years and they hold up well.
Hey man - I was wondering if you still have this flashlight & how it's holding up over time? Been thinking about doing this upgrade since I saw this vid last week.
I do still have it and it works great. It’s not my most used light- but I have seen no quality control issues... and it’s ran for hours at a time. Just remember it’s a very floody dispersed light. Most of my lights that pump out this much have more candela... It’s not for long distances but a lot of light close. I actually use it as a supplemental light I. My videos occasionally because of its floody nature.
@@AdvancedKnifeBro thanks a lot for the reply! And for those details! Flood is more useful for me anyway so I'll think I'll go ahead and do this. Thanks again - greatly appreciated!
what color is that red one? looks darker than the standard red maglite on their website. anyone able to point me in the right direction? im attempting to do an identical build to the shorter red one in the video. thanks!
That's why I bought one here in Australia, you cannot carry anything for the express purpose of self defence.. but if it happens to be night, and I just happen to have a large flash light which I totally am not using to defend myself, and I happen to be attacked, well that's just all coincidence.
I used to carry a 6 cell so I didn’t have to carry my night stick all the time. Served both purposes and sitting on my shoulder conveyed the message so I never had to whack anyone with it. Later working as as CO I carried a 5 C cell mag light. It would slide right into the front of my pants with the fat head keeping it there. Far better than those nasty plastic 2D that the government furnished. Definitely a no no to whack ant inmate with but since we didn’t carry nightsticks it served as a last ditch weapon if some nut decided to attack me. I never had to use that either except for the night time counts.
wow.... I remember when I bought my old six cell 'd' maglite. it had a normal bulb. it seemed bright at the time. then halogen bulbs came out and the old bulb was so dull and yellow... now there are little dinky flashlights like the one I recharge in my cigarrete lighter that kick its giant ass. boy things change!
@@Jonathan_Doe_ not banned, replaced. It's a common misconception that the 6 cell flashlight was banned, they were junk. Didn't hold a charge as well as the 4 cell. The accounting department was the only office that banned them.
Hey mate, i am fan of your flashlight videos, can you suggest me the best brightest flashlight and which last long too.. I mean most lumen+long lasting. Thanks
I bought one of the newer LED (168 lumen pleb class) 3D maglites on a sale about a year ago to try out. I will say that the optics do a good job of focusing such a small amount of light into an impressive spot, but they are definitely tragically behind the times. It's a shame, It's the 7th maglite that I own and it definitely has its uses, but a $3 eBay light can just destroy it at everything except bludgeoning.
It’s a camera thing. The black magic doesn’t have a good IR filter so in daylight in some of the blacks you get reds or browns. I usually fix it in color correction but not this time. You’re the first person to notice it. It’s especially apparent in the black maglite
Oh haha, I just thought that Maglite was actually brown! That's weird. Oh well, I thought the Convoy actually looks kind of cool in brown. Interestingly it doesn't seem to have the same effect on the Olight at 8:27
Here's the link from below the video. asflashlights.com/18-led-upgrades-for-maglite I do not sell these, I just reviewed them. If you need help with ordering, here is place where you can ask Matt questions. asflashlights.com/contact-us
Are they really ? I've been using Maglites for over 25 years. Couple years back I began search for a more "modern" and up to date technology. I was surprise that the more powerful 2-AA Mag was about 250+ lumens, and there was a lot of brands offering 500+ Lumens under $15. So I decided and try a couple of them. In one of the test it was the Mag vs other with 18650 battery and 500+ lumens. For my surprise at various distance you can see the 500+ was a little bit more intense, but too little to make a difference. I still have a few others, but my go to is the 262 lumens 2-AA MAg
@@happycamper9300 Yeah for most people 250 to 500 lumens is enough for most tasks, but there are several single 18650 LED flashlights that will blow the doors off a Maglite, like the Lumintop FW3A or Emisar D4. They'll do upwards of 3000 to 4000 lumens, at least until it burns your hand, a hole in your pocket, or the thermal mode kicks in, lol.

ASF really hit it out of the park with these. I've been looking for a commercial Mag that was actually decent and not made by the tosswad that is Maglica's stock model industry, because let's face it, the design is CLASSY. Although I wish he'd sent you an option with more balanced flood-to-throw ratio.
Honestly... I don't have any floody big lumen lights like the 2D... it really helps to make it useful. Most of my light useage is in my backyard and smaller... and it's perfect for that. It's even, with a nice tint, and has very little of a hotspot. But I agree that maybe he could make a less floody option for people who don't want it. But that said... the 2D is a true flooder. After seeing this beam with the lumens... I can't call my Meteor or X7 flooders anymore.
So i wonder how the heat sink factors in on a comparable light vs the flat tube of the mag - I feel the mod is for the collector you really got to love the mag to spend that kind of money. I keepmy Mags stock just in case i want to go back in time or want a "moonlight" light. If i have any left that have not been eaten by an alkaline bat.
After 7 years of High School it seems like all new people after a few years, hard to keep up with all of them. If Noctigon doesn't like honest reviews they have problems...
I have a 6 d cell I put a 3500 lumen replacement from lumencraft it's given my light a new life, was thinking of changing to the adventure sports 5000 lumen,it's a bit pricey at $195,payed 120 for the 3500
There are new maglites called ml300l. They are pretty bright and have multiple modes too. I dont know why people think maglite doesnt make led lights but they do.
+Tomahawk Chop Gamer those are about 600 lumens... I don’t think people dispute they make LED lights- it’s just that they’re underpowered compared to the competition
i had to trash my old 6 d maglite after corrosion ruined it and the batteries stuck inside. i bought a new 6 d maglite and keep the batteries outside of the flashlight and close by until im ready to use it.
1000 lumes is good enough for me and that my two nitecores have quit that one halfway works and the other one does not work at all anymore and I'm sticking with maglite and that the older technology is better because it's made just to be simple
Recently a customer paid to have a solid brass spacer made to fit inside a 6D so he could power it with a pair of 26650s and fill the rest of the tube with brass.. I couldn't even weight that light with my postal scale because it maxed it out LOL. I'd hate to be on the receiving end of a "whack" with that thing LOL!
In this video I learned that the guy who does the voice overs, and the guy who is in the video are actually the same person! I assumed that the dude in front of the camera was actually a mute.
Nope, this is one of the few where you see me talk. Trust me I can't memorize lines for shit, and use a ton of filler words if I try speaking into the camera. They'd be way worse if I didn't do them this way.
@@AdvancedKnifeBro Haha - I like your format. Just keep doing what you do - it works well! Just found it kinda funny that I've watched tonnes of your videos, and never seen you speak until now.
Hey, so ive welded multiple maglites together. So far it's a 14 d cell light. I can make it longer if needed. Is there anything that can take the power I have available?
I didn’t mix batteries. It has happened more often than not with batteries out of the same pack. Yes rechargeables or lithium are the way to go. I agree, which is why most of the lib reviews on this channel are lithium ion powered.
@@AdvancedKnifeBro Okay, so I'm assuming that 2nd battery you inserted was a spacer? Also, you have to take the batteries out at least every month. Heck, I take mine out everytime I'm not using it.
at last ,,, mag lights that are what mag lights should be i just moved over to pelican years ago , they can stand being dropped ,,, several times and dunked , and abused ,, and they just keep going.
The 6D is 178 Lumens which for it's time was amazing. There's also the 6V Halogen used in the older Magcharger (probably rare to find) which does about 200. Seems like the old school MAGLITE modders in 2007 on CPF would overdrive the bulbs (2 Cell Bulb in a 3 Cell MAGLITE) though you'd wanna use the Krypton bulbs and NiMH batteries. Heck, just running the OEM bulb with Lithium Primaries overdrives it. There are also more advanced mods using high wattage Halogen bulbs but you still need the time and money to do so. But LED is more efficient and brighter. I do prefer the Incandescent myself but it lacks punch especially when using Alkalines because the Voltage drops on a constant slope.
Ok so I subbed thinking you were a funny knife reviewer. But holy shit your a flashlight 🔦 god !! These definatly are not your father's Mag light. I gotta look up where to get one of these hope there still around.
Oh, man this is pretty fucking awesome!! Now you can blind your opposition and clobber him at the same time! YES YES YES!!!! Imagine a guy walking up to you and saying "Give me your money" as you swing your BIG ASS D Cell Maglite while he's screaming "I can't see why are you hitting me"? LMFAO Thanks for another awesome video bro
I like the old tech. They use regular batteries you can get anywhere including the dollar store. I have all types of lights but they use a non replaceable battery or 123 batteries which where I live good luck finding them or I have to go on base and pay a premium price
The thing I hate about the Maglite company is how lazy they are and how they rested on past laurels to the point that it became offensive especially when they still have the audacity to claim they are a company that is all about innovation. They survive due to the public's ignorance on the subject of lighting and a misplaced loyalty to American made products. I have owned four of them and two of them died completely due to leaking batteries. I would not entertain buying the brand again under any circumstances
To be fair it's the battery makers that are making crappier batteries- causing them to leak. I don't use alkaline batteries anymore... and mention that anytime I review a non lithium ion product. If you have to use something with AAs or Ds or Cs, use rechargeables. Tenergy makes great big rechargeables and eneloop for AA and AAA. Flashlights tend to sit around with batteries in them longer than your typical product... and they sit in the garage or glove box- and that is partially to blame for alkalines to leak. Or at least that's what the battery companies are telling us. But I agree about them not keeping up with innovation. The Chinese are killing everyone at flashlights... and if they don't keep up or don't hire people like Matt or Toykeeper to help them update their product lines then they'll fall behind. Surefire is probably next.
Agreed. I was unwise to focus on the battery aspect and should have stuck to the huge black spot that the light throws when in use or the sickly yellow tone. I too only use Eneloop's when possible and condemn alkaline batteries to disposable or low-value items only. As a fellow BLF member, we both know what "amateurs" can do and it really shows up how the R&R people at Maglite dropped the ball when it comes to innovation. As you say Surefire are also becoming reliant on build quality and reputation over innovation to these days.
Totally agreed on all this. Maglite could get competetive again by putting a decent "hobbiest" on the payroll. But yeah... I have 2 or 3 other AA maglites, but I don't use them anymore. PWM, weird beam patterns, and not taking advantage of lithium ion tech.
OMG, just purchase a flash light that already provides for your needs, I used Maglite in the 80's when I was on the PD which was the standard flashlight now there are so many lights out there that are lighter and exceed Maglite. When Maglite feels sales reduction they will update their technology. Are the inserts made in USA???
That was your best video ever.. Ok, I might be a little biased... Nope, I just checked definitely your best video ever!

what color is that red one? looks darker than the standard red maglite on their website. anyone able to point me in the right direction? im attempting to do an identical build to the shorter red one in the video. thanks!
It’s a black one. I over corrected color on those shots and added too much red to the black. It’s a black light
Technology??? I thought Maglites were billy clubs with a complimentary light on the end.
I have the 6 D cell model. Any mods for it?
I don’t think so.
Advanced Knife Bro thanks 👍🏻
The 6D will kick the little dinky flashlights ass when it comes to actually kicking ass though! That’s why they banned police from carrying them.
@@Jonathan_Doe_ not banned, replaced. It's a common misconception that the 6 cell flashlight was banned, they were junk. Didn't hold a charge as well as the 4 cell. The accounting department was the only office that banned them.
Hi, how about the 32600 3 volt batteries, can i use in my 3D maglite?
Unless the Maglite is modified, probably not.
Hey mate, i am fan of your flashlight videos, can you suggest me the best brightest flashlight and which last long too.. I mean most lumen+long lasting.
Thanks
That's a pretty broad question. My BLF Q8 review is a good place to start.
Where was all this when I still had a Mag light.
5 years in high school rocks bro. Your parents had to be cool to let you do that.
how can i get the 2000 lumen model, not the guts, but the actual maglite, its really short and cool but i cannot find it anywhere
I’d email Matt at Adventure Sport Flashlights.
I bought a Noctigon because of your review. They are tripping
+dbtrackz33 I bought one because I liked it so much too. Oh well
Great vid!
My new Mag 3D has 765 Lumen, and its enough!
Did you bake that Convoy L6 or why does it seem slightly brown?
It’s a camera thing. The black magic doesn’t have a good IR filter so in daylight in some of the blacks you get reds or browns. I usually fix it in color correction but not this time. You’re the first person to notice it. It’s especially apparent in the black maglite
Oh haha, I just thought that Maglite was actually brown! That's weird. Oh well, I thought the Convoy actually looks kind of cool in brown.
Interestingly it doesn't seem to have the same effect on the Olight at 8:27
Yeah it’s a known issue. It only happens some times and not all the stuff.
So are you using the Black Magic Pocket Cinema?
How did you get the 1dcell maglite
I want to buy a full kit. Help me out.
Here's the link from below the video.

I do not sell these, I just reviewed them. If you need help with ordering, here is place where you can ask Matt questions.

This is great just like the price. Hot or high whatever you want to use.
Love mag lites. This is great!
Please tell him the battery inserts should have verticle slots cut into them to help keep the Lithium batteries cool!
You can email him and tell him.
why is it maglite is always 10 years behind everyone else in flashlight technology
Who knows? They should just hire a few people on the internet who do it for free.
I knew I wouldn't be the first that wanted to upgrade to lithium batteries. Thanks for your work.
Why didn't you convert the 3D? Is it not as bright?
I didn’t do the conversions

Nice Bro, but how long is the battery life???
I❤️Maglites. I❤️lumens. This just feels right. 💞😳
This has both!
Maglite die Nummer eins für mich , Dann LED LENSER
amazing product, could you review cheapers flashligths, for third world countrys ? greetings from argentina man!
I was a security guard. Random fact:
The very big Maglites are exellent batons.
Yeah they do. My Convoy L6 is a big bruiser of a light.
So funny & surprised you see you here Matt
1000 lumes is good enough for me and that my two nitecores have quit that one halfway works and the other one does not work at all anymore and I'm sticking with maglite and that the older technology is better because it's made just to be simple
Mag lights make a good defensive tool that those little ones don't do nearly as good a job.
Whack a perp!
D batteries give it mass.
Snitches get stiches.
Malkoff devices makes some drop in upgrades for maglites also
Wondering if he ever considered Advanced Light Bro.
2:35 If you didn't mix batteries, you are less likely gonna have Alkaleaks. But still, NiMH, Lithium Primaries and Li-ion cells are the way to go.
It was just an illustration. They were just 3 batteries I had. Yes there are rules to alkalines. I don’t use them anymore.
at last ,,, mag lights that are what mag lights should be
i just moved over to pelican years ago , they can stand being dropped ,,, several times and dunked , and abused ,, and they just keep going.
I just got the big long one, the one that I was told American police would use as a night stick.
I love your videos
Thanks man!
I wanna see how bright an incandescent maglite can get.. Sick of the blue light
These ain't blue.
If you cant use it for a extended period of time..what good is it?
Been wanting to make one or two or these with a 6D but Matt don’t get back with his loyal customer base to answer questions..
Wow nice video i have to say growing up in Los Angeles. Maglite make great for clubbing over the head. I'll like to see your fancy lights do that.
Check out the Convoy L6!
Ok so I subbed thinking you were a funny knife reviewer. But holy shit your a flashlight 🔦 god !! These definatly are not your father's Mag light. I gotta look up where to get one of these hope there still around.
Adventure sport flashlight still makes them I think. Thanks man!
This video was Great!!!! 😂Awww man... . .good stuff
+liljack8421 whack a guy... off a guy... whack off a guy...
I see what you did there. :)
Damn, nice light :)
+toysareforboys First! Thanks dude!
I can't believe you used the word first :( Have you been reading my other comments?!
In other news, if he can build it with high CRI or at least warm white I'll buy one. Thanks for the review.
Already did :)
+toysareforboys Nice!
I liked the metaphor. Surprising from a French guy ? 😛
Ha, nice! I don't like the guy either.
I like the old tech. They use regular batteries you can get anywhere including the dollar store. I have all types of lights but they use a non replaceable battery or 123 batteries which where I live good luck finding them or I have to go on base and pay a premium price
Matt with his advanced led drop in on the flip phone.
You must've ignored that flashlight for a LONG time, if the leakage migrated all the way to the lens. And no wonder you're not happy with the output.
Make Maglite's Great Again!
maga light?
magalite edition...
Ha ha!
I wish I would have thought of that for a video title LOL!
whats the point? an over priced maglite, that's not a maglite. there's much better lights for less. BTW your videos are always fun to watch.
Thanks for watching!
Well what other flashlight can you beat someone to death with?
5000 Lumens?
*Where's my magnifying glass!?!* 😈
The heftyness for self defense is what still draws people to them
OMG, just purchase a flash light that already provides for your needs, I used Maglite in the 80's when I was on the PD which was the standard flashlight now there are so many lights out there that are lighter and exceed Maglite. When Maglite feels sales reduction they will update their technology. Are the inserts made in USA???
wow, bright...

I think you're wrong about running your car in the garage. My dad just told me to do it with the door closed
Oh, that's how it works!
