If they were the best 4wd channel in the world, they'd swap out the Mitsubishi 4D56 engine for Hyundai's D4BF, which is their licensed version of the same engine with some major improvements. Add a boost controller and you have a Delica that can actually tow something up a hill.
Hey nice work on sorting out those oil leaks. This sort of thing is very challenging for your average weekend warrior who has to drive it on Monday. One very small thing to change, pull off the axle caps on the front and change the circlip (it's around 30-32mm). It loses tension over time and eventually lets go, leaving you without drive to your front axles, and also the stub axle flops around and grinds the gear in the hub. Very simple preventative maintenance to do. (Delica owner for 8 years)
Love these things! Went across Australia three times in a '98 Delica as a kid, fond memories of sticking my head out the sunroof on 4x4 trails, and watching DVDs on a TV roped between the two front seats. Also one of the first cars I learned to drive in. Dad is doing a full engine rebuild on it now and its probably a forever car for him.

Ah, guys! Brilliant! Had a Series 2 Delica (same as yours, but diesel- short wheelbase, low roof) for a few years. Lifted, heavy duty suspension, adjustable shocks, air-locker, snorkel etc. (including necessary upgrades like better radiator, oil cooler etc.). Took it to Cape York (did half the OTT easily, I got sick of the crowds halfway through!), through deserts, moderately hard tracks in the Vic High Country. It performed beautifully (well, after the head was replaced, hence the cooling upgrades😲). It towed my 5.8m boat around easily (well, slowly uphill) including to Darwin and back to Adelaide. It is such a great vehicle, flexible, great to modify, brilliant to camp out of or in. Thanks for bringing back memories, I loved that car!

Welcome to the club boys! Marty that "tick tick tick" noise you here when going to start the car is a common and very easy fix. Just back from the driver's seat underneath the car is a large black box. Underneath the cover is two smaller boxes that are apart of the rear A/C. You'll find that inside there are plastic cogs. The cog you want to clock the opposite way to how it is sitting is one on the bottom that is shaped like a quarter of a circle.
Some of the most wild four wheel driving Ive ever experienced was in one of my old bosses lifted Delica with huge muddies on it climbing through the Kenilworth-Mapleton motocross track, literally airing off jumps and easily scaling 55° rutted slopes. Absolute beast of a car and Im glad to see you guys experience the awesomeness
Marty has amazing research skills. He goes and finds a good deal on a vehicle I have never even heard of a just like that he has all the parts he knows he will need to sort out the beastie. Few things more satisfying than finding all the oil leaks and putting a stop to that.
Love it! Mitsi V6s can be a bit of a pain to work on and may have their notorious leaky problems, but they are bulletproof and as long as they still have oil they won’t let you down. I have an NL paj converted from a 3.5 to a 380 motor (you guys helped to inspire it as a big block swap) which might be a bit tougher to swap in place of the 3.0 in the Delica but you should definitely do it- it’d make heaps more power and be much better to drive.
Towards the end I was wondering who / how the follow shots were being filmed, then caught a glimpse of Moog in the reflection running behind the car, then heard him struggling, out of breath the wrap up the last few lines in the car haha. Appreciate the effort that goes into every video.
We had a 97 2.8l deisel long wheel base Delica, which we took on multiple trips with the kids, heaps of room. We loved it, it was great off road on the sand. Then we got a camper trailer..... and yeah they struggle to tow so now we have a Pajero. Thanks for the nostalgia, Worlds best 4wd channel.
Delica! Very cool! The latest gen D5 is amazing. They hold their value because there is simply nothing else like them, they're mechanically sorted and very well proven over the years. With van life and adventuring proving very popular, people want an alternative to regular SUV's as well. Mitsubishi will sell as many of these as they can make and really should be exporting more of them.
Well there is the Landcruiser troop carrier which comes in 8 or 11 seats, so that's quite comparable. But I dont think it will be as comfortable as the Delica.

You got the V6 variant. I used to own a '97 L400 Skyline LWB variant with the 2.8 Diesel . I loved the thing to death. Speaking of death, I cried tears of joy when my 4 kids were born, but the one and only time I cried, really cried from a broken heart was the day the missus ran into the back of a GT Skyline and destroyed it. I never took the car serious off roading but I did take it bush a lot and the beaches fishing. There was nothing better than driving right up to the waters edge, sliding the passenger door, rotating the captain seat 90' and sit in absolute comfort with the rod out the door. The Skyline was very top heavy with the glass roof, so serious 4x4 tracks were not a safe option especially with the narrow track of the Delica, but laying down in the back at the camp site looking at the stars was awesome.
A delica is what i have wanted for ages. The flashing front wheel lights could be super select solenoids, a stiff or seized front diff actuator, or be as simple as split vacuum lines to cannister, solenoids, or actuator.
Hello from Canada. I have been watching every episode of every build for years and years. I might have blown a load in excitement seeing this because I just bought an 02 L400 PD6W in November. It's a 1:48 seconds into the episode and I had to comment as Marty is looking at one almost identical to mine. So f'n excited for this series 😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄
Marty try using ceramic tyre ball bearing balancing inside the tyres, we use them here in Ireland for Mud terrain tyres on motorway speeds 70mph and it solves death wobble etc.
I considered a Delica when I was looking for an import van here in the states. For looks the old square L300 is way cool but in the end with the costs and the fact that here cars have to be 25 years old to legally import I went with the Toyota Hiace with reliability and slightly larger size in mind. Converted into a camper it's been fun the last couple years so far. 2" lift, all terrain tires, solar, battery system, fridge freezer and the works
Great pick! Remind me of our old Toyota Lucida, I think the Lucidas are even weirder though! Uneven doors and engine mounted on its side with turbo UNDER the car 😅
Those are called previas here in the UK lovely cars. I think most Toyota mpvs have that engine layout the hiace has the same layout too😂 although those aren't common at all here but they are back in my home country Pakistan
These things are really popular in the UK for making offroad campervans. So lots get imported with a high price. And... 2/3 years ago, a very popular landscape photography UA-camr (Thomas Heaton) bought one and did a video series on it. The place that he bought it from said demand for them went up due to him haha
The color of the valvetrain under that cover told me that motor has been loved, despite the leaks. That golden brown, even coating is the perfect telltale that they've been changing the oil suitably.
had one, lift 'n snorkel, big tyres and it went 4wd fantastic, i've even towed land cruzers out of rivers after crossing my self, cheers fir the entertainment.
I had a delica back in the day, used to have pajeros and shoguns too, transplanted the 2.8Td in the Delica with the 3.5 V6 MIVEC petrol from my SWB shogun. Was a manual too, with the 3.5 V6 petrol it was epic. raised the suspension, stuck 33" muddies on it with a 2.5" body lift and that thing went everywhere. Was gonna put 35's on it but never got round to it. Best thing it was based on the pajero chassis so had tons of parts for it. Wish I never got rid :(
Surely if the problem is that it's gutless, and they are the same platform as the Pajero, the obvious course of action is a Pajero Evo 3.5L Mivec swap?! Should bolt right in more or less, like the Levorg STI swap of the Mitsubishi world. The boys are more than capable.
The 4m40 diesel moter variant did a great job towing. I would tell folks it was a pajaro 4x4 with a starwagon on top. Owned a 97 S2 for 10years. Get yourself a bash plate if you want to 4x4, the oil filter is located in a bad spot(at lest on the 4m40).
Mitsubishi Australia SERIOUSLY missed out on locally selling these. All they brought were the Panel Van (Mitsy Express). Soo good your covering this car, because if I couldnt afford the Kei truck, this was a close second to use as a All rounder Camper. Thank god we have soo many of these in the country and support for them. We need to bring more, before the price goes up and when the American's can get the opportunity to import them. I would probably get the more powerful v6 version or diesel so it can handle more weight.
All the leaks and o rings gives me flashbacks of restoring my diesel excursion! It’s the same color and I got a screaming good deal on it just like you did the delica! Strangely maybe not but I dig that little people mover! 8 passengers in whats half the size of my tank, I love it! Looking forward to this series!
Oh man, the o.g. whip. Piss rust that has been nicely aged! Can't wait to see the old girl again! Delicas are really popular on the west coast of Canada. Lot's of camper conversions with nice offroad tires for the forest service roads. Pretty cool little adventure rig.
Lots of people get Delicas and take them up to Cape York thinking thats an adventure. I kept going north! I have mine in the interior highlands on Papua New Guinea and its great. The roads here are not good, and the Delica can carry the family around, go anywhere. Mine was imported by someone else, sight unseen, and was NOT in good condition on arrival. Off the top of my head I've done : new radiator, water pump, expansion bottle, thermostat and coolant. All new filters and fluids. Replaced that harmonic balancer. Removed the injection pump to change seals, repaired the timing plate that interfaces the pump to the timing gears. Replaced rocker cover gaskets. All new tires (Maxxis Bravo MT). All belts changed. FLushed transmission. Changed tension pulley. New inner and outer tie rods. New Sway Bar Links all corners. New Shocks all corners. New glow plugs. I am currently waiting for new front brake rotors and a new steering rack. I had very little mechanical know how before owning this car, but do to necessity of my location I have been learning how to do most of this myself, and its been very rewarding.
Watching one of these snatching bogged camper vans out of a field at Download 2016 was great fun. Commonly imported into the UK as work site people movers. Really looking forward to your big adventure with it!
I love these, my dad had a 94 super exceed 2.8td 8seater one 13yrs ago. One of my favourite cars he had when growing up. Was great on family holidays especially when we went to Cornwall down all the narrow lanes 😂
I love the Delica! I'm in Canada and use to work for an indie euro shop and a guy out of the blue started bringing his Delica to us to service! It's such a cool vehicle for sure!! Can't wait to see more
Hell yes , finally a Delica on the channel , I bought my first one way back in 2010 (Super Exceed with Crystal lite roof) but in 2019 I imported a D5 G Premium, omg it's the best machine I've ever bought.
For the work that needed done, you got a steal. You helped keep the dealers inventory flowing, and they didn't have to risk finding something worse. The gamble payed off for you, but the dealer still didn't lose -- good transaction for everyone.
my '96 Chamonix - the real Delica models - leaks like a sieve, sits high - 2 inch lift on top - torsion bars turned tight and land rover 8in springs in the back - rebuilt 2800 4M40 diesel engine with 50,000 kms on it, new everything under the bonnet, room for the Marshalls, Ampeg, drums and PA and all the equipment is Robber's Dog's Bandvan . . and its cool - just had to get that in there - any Deli after 97 is for poofters and the diesels are the boys . .
Recommend Sunny Corner out past Lithgow through the forest over to Turon, mad drive and awesome camp sites in Turon. And you can wiz over to Sofala, plenty of river crossings and some great scenery.
Loving the new mcm sunglasses, would highly recommend for anyone considering getting a pair. Would be awesome to see yous guys mod a Honda odyssey. Modded ones aren’t very common in aus but are quite big in Japan. Personally I quite like them, great styling for a wagon and a k24 under the bonnet, plus a decent aftermarket support. Can’t go wrong.
2:01 They hold their value because they're a factory 4x4 van and very capable. No other brand made anything that could compete using a proper van as a base. Off-roading and vans have become very popular, so the combo is very sought after and since there is no competition, you're going to want a Delica. There is a reason a dealer can specialise in a single model and have it be profitable.
It's good to see you guys actually do something a little bit different I wouldn't mind seeing this one done out as like a four-wheel drive camper that would be totally awesome
When I was a kid in the '80's I remember seeing my first Delica (SD model?) and thinking it looked like the coolest 4x4 on the road. Even more cool because I was on Fraser Island when it was dry (VERY soft, boggy sand) and this thing was just cruising around. Way more capable than I would ever have thought a van could be.
Awesome buy, Marty. My dad had a '98 Delica for many years. He drove across from Alice Springs to Broome, it went well. If you need parts for it outside NSW, there's a Delica shop on the Sunshine Coast. Turbo Yoda and Woody may know about it.
My parents had a UKNissan Serena and bought a JDM Toyota Estima when I was young which opened me up to the JDM fruits, I have since always loved the Delica they’re a mad car, truck off roader hybrid which I have no idea how it came to production I’m just glad it did.
Love the Delica! They too are high here in the States, I had a few Monteros/Pajeros which share a ton of parts with them. Flashing front diff light is almost 100% always a bad front diff actuator. You can get them extremely cheap. Easy fix
I had km3’s on a Land Cruiser for a couple years and they were surprisingly well behaved on the road, UNTIL there was any inclement weather. Completely useless in snow and ice. Off-road they did pretty well, but I found they lost traction when they were wet. I still have the bfg ko2 all terrains on my dodge pickup and they have been absolutely superb in all driving conditions. I’ve done rocks, sand, snow, ice, mud, and gobs of highway miles and they have always had predictably good performance which I think is really what we look for in tires. I’ve had to recover the Land Cruiser on the km3’s but my old pickup is still undefeated on the ko2’s.
The clicking when you start it up is from the aircon box under the car just behind the driver's seat. Just a worn plastic tooth, you can rotate it or get a replacement from delica garage.
This is why I love my 2005 Honda CR-V. It's got 200K km's on it, but the engine is out of an '06 TSX and it's been completely rebuilt, so it only has about 10K on it. It's a mad little adventuring machine. I had originally planned to put the AWD system out of the CR-V and the engine out of the TSX into my '05 Civic EX, but decided to keep it FWD and put a K20 / turbo in it.
We love a good off road adventure.. because we are the WORLD'S BEST... well, you know: ua-cam.com/video/DVRE-VikGMc/v-deo.html

Family had one of these growing up, a 4x4 chamonix model, was actually a pretty damn capable rig in the sand up the dunes
Thank you for showing the real side of caring for an old vehicle! Love it.
Yep, mid motor
They're called Emina /Estimas here and I have a 4x4 version 😅 they actually go OK off road but the 2.4L petrol is gutless
@@Afraz_9n3 UK based but got an imported one. Needs a new head though so not on the road at the moment but should start sorting soon :)
@@CallumInns Got the diesel 4x4 one too. Out of action for now though! 😅
Marty! I’m sure I speak for many when I say - Show us the boat!!
These things are really popular in the UK for making offroad campervans. So lots get imported with a high price. And... 2/3 years ago, a very popular landscape photography UA-camr (Thomas Heaton) bought one and did a video series on it. The place that he bought it from said demand for them went up due to him haha
Hey cool, I'm someone else in the Venn diagram of your viewing habits :)
I like his Channel. One of the reasons I purchased my Delica!
Nice video guys. Straight to the point, no BS, just instant nugget satisfaction.
The engine it self is actually not bad and can tow pretty well, it's the old auto that kills the power so much.
Thank you for introducing me to these! Never knew, and have been missing out!
Love these vans. I own one and they are soo capable stock. Even better with mods
Petrol or diesel?
Diesel
@@benmak49 yeah good choice there. Used to heaps of them here in nz now not so much
The color of the valvetrain under that cover told me that motor has been loved, despite the leaks. That golden brown, even coating is the perfect telltale that they've been changing the oil suitably.
I've always loved these cars! Can't wait to see some upcoming videos of it!
Maaaaad van! my neighbor has one the same color we wave and say "hi." Best of luck with the adventure coming up!!! I hope it serves you well!!!
We need MIGHTY BOAT MODS! I am pulling a sailboat almost every weekend behind my T3 and would love to see more of your watery action!
had one, lift 'n snorkel, big tyres and it went 4wd fantastic, i've even towed land cruzers out of rivers after crossing my self, cheers fir the entertainment.
Oh great!
Another car I’m interested in is about to explode in popularity and become expensive 🤣
Can’t wait to see how this turns out!
They cant even sell these things on facebook marketplace, all the ones I see have been forsale for months
The best off roading videos ever, no one else Evan comes close!
Whos Evan?
thats always been the best part of this channel-just 2 mates doing stuff
Great... just as I'm on the market for one of these buggers, mighty car mod tax is gonna be added!
I love my delica!! Off-road it everywhere!
I do love Moog and Marty together but its nice to see a change of crowd now and then! Enjoyed this as much as the rest :D
Good to have you in the van club. Can't wait to see where this project goes.
Omg your username lmaoooo
@@goclunker I assume you get the joke?
This style of video is really nice, more chill. Thanks for that
Watching one of these snatching bogged camper vans out of a field at Download 2016 was great fun.
Commonly imported into the UK as work site people movers.
Really looking forward to your big adventure with it!
We closed 5 min ago but he still helped you! What a legend! We need more people like him.
I love these, my dad had a 94 super exceed 2.8td 8seater one 13yrs ago. One of my favourite cars he had when growing up. Was great on family holidays especially when we went to Cornwall down all the narrow lanes 😂
The Mini-Van looks Great , Thanks
I love the Delica! I'm in Canada and use to work for an indie euro shop and a guy out of the blue started bringing his Delica to us to service! It's such a cool vehicle for sure!! Can't wait to see more
Hell yes , finally a Delica on the channel , I bought my first one way back in 2010 (Super Exceed with Crystal lite roof) but in 2019 I imported a D5 G Premium, omg it's the best machine I've ever bought.
I really enjoyed watching this Marty, love seeing stuff like this, thank you. Would love to see more 😊
You can pick these up in the UK from around £2/3k road legal ...
Well I'm glad you guys are checking out the JDM vans. I usually see Toyota and Suzuki's, here, in Washington.
For the work that needed done, you got a steal. You helped keep the dealers inventory flowing, and they didn't have to risk finding something worse. The gamble payed off for you, but the dealer still didn't lose -- good transaction for everyone.
my '96 Chamonix - the real Delica models - leaks like a sieve, sits high - 2 inch lift on top - torsion bars turned tight and land rover 8in springs in the back - rebuilt 2800 4M40 diesel engine with 50,000 kms on it, new everything under the bonnet, room for the Marshalls, Ampeg, drums and PA and all the equipment is Robber's Dog's Bandvan . . and its cool - just had to get that in there - any Deli after 97 is for poofters and the diesels are the boys . .
Attainable, practical and odd stuff on wheels. Love it.
Heck yeah I have one of these in America!! I spend days and days on in in the desert and climb any hill or off-road terrain!
When I was a kid in the '80's I remember seeing my first Delica (SD model?) and thinking it looked like the coolest 4x4 on the road. Even more cool because I was on Fraser Island when it was dry (VERY soft, boggy sand) and this thing was just cruising around. Way more capable than I would ever have thought a van could be.
so keen on these solo episodes, no mucking about just straight building.
You had me at "snack pack"!!
I really love it. I have the same in white colour. You will have fun
Love the Delica! They too are high here in the States, I had a few Monteros/Pajeros which share a ton of parts with them.
Flashing front diff light is almost 100% always a bad front diff actuator. You can get them extremely cheap. Easy fix
Bloomin' love these! I have a heavily modded, 1uz swapped L400 😊
Such a unique vehicle! Would love to see more content on this one!!
Been in a bit of a shitter in my life recently & just seeing that theres a new Might Car Mods episode makes me happy & excited for a bit.
The Delicas are super popular here in Western Canada, I see them everywhere. I love them.
Good choice. I've had two Delicas and loved both of them. The last one had the 2.8 turbo diesel and was more than capable of towing.
I love mistubishi, especially the Delica, so happy for u to have one
